Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

OOC, just gotta say that those two women are characters that I write and maintain, and they don't look like that, nor does Haley ever use that body language or dress like that. Sara, on the left, is a spitting image of Jordanna Frost, and does not have hair that long, or a forehead that big. Haley, on the right, doesn't dress like that, and she usually wears a tailored suit, velvet for on the job, and a slightly looser-fitting fine fleece for a more comfortable outfit. Haley dresses sharp and comfortable.

However, Creamy is a character who would remember them much like the picture shows.

A continuation of Off-station and Creamys' Log

A deck of cards with random instructions on each one, it had to be something like that. That would be a good explanation for why Creamy would simply leave the station, seemingly on a whim. He’d got himself a room, a gym membership and then a job. After a lockdown, he simply left. No wonder he was so hard to track, the guy bounced round with no rhyme or reason.

Vodan sat at minimum power watching Creamy fly by the agri-world waiting for him to jump.

There was no telling where the guy would go, so Vodan had to follow the wake. It looked like Creamy was off to Irrational Exuberance again; a station run by gaggle of freaks and weirdos that Creamy enjoyed visiting.

One jump on, Creamy ship continued it supercruise for a long few minutes instead of making his next jump. Vodan was wondering if now would be a good time to contact the man he had been following for weeks on end, when the Asp changed direction, jumping shortly afterwards.

Two wake scans, and three jumps left Vodan in a Summerland, a system Vodan had heard a lot about on Galnet and pilots chatter. It didn’t take him too long to find the ship Creamy was flying. Feeling sure Creamy was heading to Henry O'Hare's Hangar, Vodan did likewise.

It was a surprise to see Creamy drop from supercruise just ahead of him causing Vodan to have to turn if he wanted to keep track of his target. By the time Vodan had turned, Creamys’ ship was back on his contact panel, this time as part of a wing. Vodan just had time to scan the new escort before they dropped into the atmosphere of the Earth-like world the station was orbiting.

Creamy had been joined by two Imperial Navy Clippers’ and escorted to the locked world. There would be no following him down there.

Previous Post

Glancing up from his blow, Creamy quickly eyed the man that had addressed him. A lean chap with an unkempt bead and a bad case of helmet hair, but the enquiry had been friendly enough and Creamy did love a chat with his chow.

“A little of both old boy. Tend to prefer them cold, but the dip is a bit sweet for my current dietary limitations don’ch know, so broth it is”

After wiping his hands on a napkin, Creamy thrust a sanitised appendage forwards and introduced himself.

“The names Brix, Brix Barton. A pleasure mister..?”
07 Mar 2022, 2:26pm
A fake name again. Bricks. It made Vodan smile as he took Creamys' hand and shook it.

"The names Vodan, but most people call me Dan coz Vod sounds dumb"

Pretending to notice the bags under Creamys' stool for the first time, Vodan did a little investigating.

"Birthday shopping for the wife are you?" he asked nodding towards the many classy carriers. "It's that or an apology by the looks of it dude"
07 Mar 2022, 6:01pm
"Hmm?" sounded Creamy following Dans' eyes "Oh that, no; preparing for a bit of a trip. Picking up a few odds and ends from here and there before I trot off to Imperial space"

Creamy put a heap of noodles on his spoon and enjoyed a mouthful before continuing.

"No better way to experience a virgin low-G world than Gliding on Uzumoku Wings what? Not going to come across a few sets of them in my colour around home"

"Dude, Empire Space ain't that far away. No need for special supplies for a few hundred light-years man. Especially if ya goin home"

The stall owner placed a bowl in front of Vodan without interrupting the men.

"<Thank you for the food>" said Vodan absently dropping into Japanise again. "<It smells amazing>"

It dawned on Vodan that following Creamy around had introduced him to some great places to eat. Creamy had a real knack for finding gems like this stall. Vodan tapped on his wrist computer and tagged the place so he could come back after resolving the Vengerfield thing.
08 Mar 2022, 8:45am
"Oh, I'm not going home, I'm off to.."

Creamy played the rest of the sentence in his head and thought telling a stranger he was going to track the flightpath of his missing explorer uncle that was most likely dead would spoil the mood. This Dan chap was curt and a bit too direct for Creamy's liking, but verity is the spice of life, and Creamy wasn't about to spoil a light lunch chat.

"..to explore a nebula. The Blue .. something or other"

Finishing his last spoon of broth, Creamy pushed the bowl away and wiped his lips with a napkin.

"Perfection as always, mister Kawano. Your food is the best reason to visit Solo. Thank you"
08 Mar 2022, 1:40pm
"Thats Kawano-san dude" corrected Vodan.

Creamy was getting ready to leave, Voadn had to say something now, or he would have to follow the guy to keep the convo going; that would look weird. Ok he thought, lean into it gently and look out for a kick to the head.

"Hay, goin deep into the black is a good call man, specially as you got people after you" volunteered Voadn.

Trying to look relaxed, Vodan broke his sticks and dunked a fishcake into the soup, keeping an eye on Creamy in case he finally recognise who he was talking with and took some blunt force revenge.
08 Mar 2022, 4:26pm
Vodan"Thats Kawano-san dude" corrected Vodan.

Creamy delibreatly turned to face Dan.
"If I could claim Japanise heritage, I'm sure that would have been the case over the few years I've knowen Mister Kawano. As it is, he's never expressed displesuer, and nore have I when he addresses me as Goodness-san"

Feeling pleased with him self for correting an 'acctualy I'll think you'll find' arse, Creamy brushed some imaginary fluff off his pressuer suit.
08 Mar 2022, 6:29pm
Mister Kawano-san and Vodan busied themselves avoiding each other's eyes after hearing, so-called Bricks Barton, drop his real name. Vodan had heard Creamy do it a few times before, once telling someone else to use his cover name after introducing him self as Creamy over fleet coms. But it had only taken a few minutes for Creamy to trip himself up during a little Self-righteousness moment. The idea was to keep it friendly so Vodan could float his plan to get Vengerfield of their tails past Creamy.

"Yeah, ok I get it I guess. When I was a kid I spent most my time on Japanise speaking stations you know? So hearing "Mister" sounds real weird to me" admitted Vodan with air quotes.

Creamy wasn't so good with hints; he needed it spelling out. With pictures. Vodan was still a little weary of getting his balls kicked into his tonsils if Creamy was still pissed at his former kidnapper. Using a target's real name would normally trigger fight or flight instincts, but Vodan banked on that being just another step on the road to realization for this guy.

"So I think you missed the real point of what I said after the San thing Creamy. Being a wanted man ain't an easy life, right?"
08 Mar 2022, 9:33pm
There was something wrong with what Dean had just said, but Creamy couldn't put his finger on it. Instead of looking confused, Creamy said something so he didn’t appear foolish. Creamy had never read the Golden Book.

"Oh well, its.. it's been a while since anyone has come after me to be fair. On the other hand, it's been a while since I've done anything worthy of being chased for"

This Dean fellow deserved a second look. He had nice boots, but everything else, especially his long fur lined coat, had a well-worn and lived in appearance; just like his messy hair and untrimmed beard. There were people like him all over the bubble, covered in utility pouches and hidden weapons, but this chap was starting to ring some bells.
09 Mar 2022, 1:50pm
The arthritic old rodent that turned the wheels in Creamys' head was getting up to speed. Vodan had to stay in control of the situation and let the penny drop when he was ready to react, in case Creamy took their reunion poorly.

"Yeah I know coz the same people after you want me dead too" Vodan gave Creamy a moment to let that information sink in. "So those cocksuckers haven't stopped following you, but I've been covering our tracks since you escaped from Vengerfield"

Treating Creamy like a toddler, talking slowly and giving him time to absorb the information was important. But unlike most people that interacted with this guy, Vodan didn't assume that just coz he was a bit slow, he was incompetent. That was far from the case.

"I'm good at it coz I was with those guys until two mercs blasted their way off-planet with you. Losing you got me on Vengerfields shit list"

If there was going to be a fight, now was the moment Vodan wanted it, he was ready, so he dropped some provocation.

"I've pretty much been with you, science your date with Nerys on Robigo. I'm the dude you disarmed and then kicked in the head before Nerys shot my guy with my gun"
10 Mar 2022, 10:12am
What he was being told sounded like a poor joke to begin with, but the ring of truth won out, leaving Creamy unable to decide what to do about it. Many negative things had happened to Creamy over the last year or so, and most of them had their roots with this man and his gang. Creamys' breath came shallow and fast, feeling uncomfortable on the back of his throat and cold in his lungs.

Memories of his misfortune and, more wounding, the misfortune of the people around Creamy flooded his mind. It was this Daniel fellow and his cronies that were at the other end of most, if not all of it. A tremble took hold of Creamys' spine as he tried to react to the revelation. The swirl of memories pushed forward a slew of questions, accusations and abolishment that pressed up behind Creamys' teeth, unable to get out.

Looking in disbelief at this tatty long coated man, made Creamy clench his fists, stopping just shy of making the visions of violence he was having a reality. He glanced at Mister Kawano and imagined how upset the cook would be if Creamy let slip his grip on civility. He didn't want another good person touched by his own long-running curse, so all Creamy could do was stand up and put some distance between himself and the focus of his growing fury until his mind settled.
10 Mar 2022, 11:49am
Unclenching his jaw, Vodan released a breath he didn't know he had been holding; he also let his hand drop from the hilt of his pistol. For a few beats there, Creamy was just as intimidating as Vengerfiled. It had taken way too many weeks to catch up with Creamy, and although following a guy that pissed off was a real bad idea, Vodan had to try. The guy's bags were still under his stool, so he would be back, but privacy for the proposition Vodan had in mind would be way better.

Dropping a handful of credits on the counter, Vodan gave Kawano-san short bow; the Udon here was real good.

<"He's gonna kick your ass"> said the chef, shaking his head as he watched Vodan push through the curtain to chase down the nice Imperial customer.

Catching up with Creamy, Vodan pressed on with his proposal.

"Dude, I know it's fucked up coming from me, but if we work together, we'll both be better off for it"

Putting his hand on Creamy's shoulder, Vodan softened his voice and asked nicely.

"Come on man, just hear me out yeah?"
10 Mar 2022, 2:36pm
The physical contact allowed Creamy to read exactly where Daniel was, and the audacity of the man pushed him over the edge. Crossing his arm over his chest to grip the man's fingers, Creamy snaked his free arm around the one leading to the hand on his shoulder and he pressed against its owner's ribs, Creamy pulled as he turned until he felt the man's shoulder joint come out of its socket.

Releasing Dans' hand, Creamy chopped at his windpipe to stifle the cry of pain and gripped his neackbearded throat to stop any other noises coming out of his filthy mouth. It had taken less than two seconds to disable his tormentor. As Creamy released the limp, dislocated arm, the image of two women that had been harmed by association with Creamy filled his mind. Nerys and Jacqueline.

The Nerys situation was upsetting enough. His budding relationship with her didn't find a peaceful moment to develop thanks to the .. thing gripped in Creamys' right hand. He'd never know if it was going to be something or just a thing for a few days, thanks to the endless interference from raiders brandishing guns. At least Nerys had escaped any real harm, Jacqueline was another matter entirely.

"How did it feel cutting her face to suit your machination?" Asked Creamy in the serene voice of a man that had crossed beyond rage and into calculated hatred. "Did you think I wouldn't realise you made a French-speaking medic look like Nerys just so I would feel a connection with her?"

Creamy pulled Dans' magnetic boots off the floor and still squeezing his neck bought his face nose to nose with his own.

"I knew as soon as I mistook Jacqueline for Nerys that you would hurt her if I didn't tell you where to find the good doctor, and I haven't forgotten what you put that poor girl through just to force me to tell you what I don't know"

Taking the mans' cheek bones in his other hand, Creamy started to squeeze, feeling the spacers softer bones give under the pressure.

"Perhaps I should make a few alterations to your face to see how you like it"

Fortunately for Vodan, the movement of a couple of passers-by caught Creamys' attention. The horrified looks on their faces made Creamy realise what he was doing was torturer, and out of guilt, his grip softened.
