Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

That was quick! Creamy turned around, and then Vodan was in pain and couldn’t breathe any more. So much for being ready this time. The pain caused by the hand around his neck was taking a back seat to the red haze closing in from the edges of his vision. The pressure building in his head made a hiss in Vodan's ears, and the words Creamy was saying seemed to come for further and further away.

With his one good arm, Vodan clawed at the hand gripping him, but he may as well have been trying to remove an industrial clamp. Just as his vision became too fuzzy to see any more, and Vodan felt unctuousness claiming him, he managed to get a breath and then another, reinvigorating his muscles.

With a mighty effort, Vodan struggled out of Creamys’ grasp and fell to the floor, gasping down great lungfuls of precious air.

“Ve..Ven.. Venger. Vengerfield, not me” he panted “and he’ll keep coming” Pausing to enjoy breathing a little more, Vodan looked up at Creamy.

“Until he believes you don’t know where Nerys is, or you're dead he’ll keep fuckin people up to get to you. If you listen to me, I can help you prove you don’t know where the Doctor has gone without anyone gettin killed”
11 Mar 2022, 2:52pm
To Creamy, anger was like a wave, it crested and broke. He was in the wash of it now, observing the fallout of his actions. There on the floor in front of him was a man that deserved punishing, fighting for breath as passers by hurried away, doubtless to call security. He was still tense, and his own breath was shallow and fast, but now reason was getting in the way of reaction.

“Well, you can.. damn well wait till I get back from the nebula” scoffed Creamy trying to regain some composure “and if I see you before such time, I’ll squeeze till your face turns purple”

Turning on his heel, Creamy marched back to the noodle stall to collect his bags.
11 Mar 2022, 3:25pm
‘At least he’s letting me live’ thought Vodan as he rolled over onto his back ‘I wouldn’t have in his place’ After the internal narrative, another thought came to Vodan. He was dealing with Creamy.

“Secret Eagle Acres. Eravate” called Vodan letting his head roll to see if Creamy was listening. “Every Friday at..”

Creamy was walking away at a good pace, clearly not listening.

“.. Ar there’s no way your dumb ass would remember anyway” Vodan said to himself quietly “I’ll call ya computer before you block my comms asshole”

After laying still for a few moments to figure out how to cope with his bruised throat, Vodan found he had a lot of difficulty getting up. His right arm didn’t work any more.

“What the fuck did he do to my arm!”

Station security would be along any moment now, and Vodan had stolen plenty of Altairian Skin shipments from cargo pilots flying out of here, so answering questions would be a bad idea. Before dealing with getting off Solo, Vodan had to find a warren's clinic to fix whatever damage Creamy had done to his damn arm.

Nothing was ever easy these days.

The new control on the on her hand console need a safety cap. Blowing a section of hull away mid-supercruise would atomise the conda in less than a second. It was a jury-rig job, a good one, but the explosive bolts holding the detachable hull in place didn’t have physical lockouts, only computer controlled safeguards, and Lamb didn’t trust computers thanks to knowing Maul.

With a bit of glue and the aid of the synthesizer, Lamb attached a cap to cover the button and checked it wasn’t in the way, or easy to open. Once satisfied, she cycled up the power plant and reactivated the ship systems one by one, making sure everything was functioning properly. With no auto-repair unit, a lot of the systems were less than one hundred percent, but there was nothing she could do about that until they landed somewhere with a dry-dock.

“Good morning ladies and gentlemen, this is Captain Mercy. I am happy to inform you that Lambaconda twenty-two has completed modifications, and she is more than capable of conveying us all to the place of observation. We will be executing a few short jumps and touring the star systems to ensure everything is perfectly operational, and then I will be happy to take us on the last leg of our journey. For now, please return to your cabins; we will be jumping in thirty minutes. My self and Lambaconda Cruise would like to thank you for flying with us”

She hadn’t meant to say the ‘thank you’ part, but it sort of slipped its self in whenever Lamb did the announcements.
22 Mar 2022, 3:04pm
The Krait dropped from supercruise with its familiar 'whoosh', and Silas immediately checked his sensor logs and honked the system.
They were here... wherever 'here' was. Lamb, or some sign of her, should be in this system someplace.

Knowing the type of work she was doing, Silas noted that she probably had disabled transponders and would be impossible to locate via official methods.

Trying to keep a low profile while he figured out what to do next, he cruised out to about 1000ls from the main star, and dropped from supercruise.

After the ship dropped and he throttled to zero, Silas stood up, stretched his legs, and grabbed a coffee refill before beginning his slow magnetic clonk down to the barracks.

*clonk* *clonk* *clonk*

He sipped his coffee, and waved the bridge door open with an electronic whir.

*clonk* *clonk* *clonk*

He arrived at Maul's cabin, and attempted to wave the door open.

*Access Denied*, the panel happily chirped at him, turning red.

"What the fugginstupidpiece..." he began audibly before trailing off into a grumpy mumble.

Again he waved.

Again he heard *Access Denied*

Silas was tired and in no mood. His expression drooped like someone who had just woken up. He sipped his coffee before setting it down. He then drew his sidearm, chambered a round, and pointed it at the door panel.

Something made him pause for a moment and then...

"Oh... dumbass." he said out loud, remembering that this was not, in fact, his Krait MkII. The Arbiter was still parked safely back where they had started. Silas had spent too much time on that ship over the years and developed some habits, one of which being that he was used to having unfettered access to anything aboard 'his' ship.

He holstered his sidearm again, and with this epiphany, turned around and walked across the hallway to what was actually Maul's cabin, the Captain's Cabin.

*clonk* *clonk*

"Yo... you alright in there?" Silas shouted, banging on the door.

No answer. He waited a second and pounded again.

After a few seconds, still nothing.

Silas decided to try the intercom on the door panel. It replying with *Access Denied* was the final straw in his patience.

He drew his sidearm and pointed it at the door panel.
22 Mar 2022, 4:46pm
There was a thump on the other side of the door just before it slid open. Maul was a mess. Floating there in nothing but his remlok suit, his usual gelled back hair sticking up everywhere and his eyes barely capable of opening enough to even see Silas at all, much less him pointing his sidearm at the door panel.

Maul groaned before finally being able to speak.

"Mornin" He barely got the word out before an empty bottle of Silas' whisky slowly floated towards and gently dinged on the side of his head.

With an eye-closed confused look, he reached for the foreign object and tried to pry his eyes open enough to see what had hit him.

Suddenly, he was now very alert.

"Oh shit!" He looked up at Silas. "No, no, no, no I never touch this stuff!"

He left the bottle in place in the door way and pushed himself across the room to quickly put on his magboots.

Now securely locked to the floor he began scouring the room for his data-slate.

"It's not here." He looked across the room at Silas and repeated the statemen again but louder now and with a concerned look.

"Dude, it's not fucking here!" He stomped across to room to the doorway again.

"How long have I been unattended?...Maul began rubbing his face. "I've NEVER had alcohol while on an O.H. trip. Hell, I haven't had a drop of alcohol in nearly a decade."

"Fuck, fuck, fuck." He mumbled to himself while glancing around franticly.

"Ow, ow, ow." Then the headache started.

His wrist computer started dinging to alert him of messages he was receiving on his slate. However, he couldn't view the messages without having the slate in hand.

"I think I'm gonna puke." Maul said, leaning on his shoulder against the doorway.
22 Mar 2022, 8:21pm
Silas stood with a mix of amusement and concern in front of the doorframe where Maul was leaning, sidearm in one hand, half a tumbler of coffee in the other, trying to get his tired brain to come up with a solution for the poor man.

Either of the items in his hands would technically suffice, he chuckled to himself. Internally, as he was too mentally exhausted to manifest his amusement physically.

"Look at it this way..." he said, holstering the sidearm and offering Maul the half-tumbler of coffee.
"...The only part about drinking that you actually remember his how shitty you feel right now, with no memory of the fun part. It's not a very compelling business case to convince your brain to relapse. Meanwhile, I'll change the code on the whiskey-pod to something you don't know. I know you can crack it in .2 seconds, but just... don't, Mmm'kay?"

"Now, as for your slate... buddy I can give you a hardware address and you can find anybody within 6 feet of accuracy anywhere in the damned galaxy. We can find your slate on your own ship. But it can wait. We're going to the mess."

Silas was still standing with his coffee hand extended to Maul

"You show me where the greasy stuff is, and I'll whip you up a good ol' fashioned hangover cure."
23 Mar 2022, 4:18pm
Maul's cheeks expanded slightly, he then blew a wave of hot rancid air to the side.

"Ugh," He rested his hand on his stomach. "I've got some food cartridges down this way for the 'chef'." He said, intermittently interrupted by burps and grunts.

Maul groaned and moaned as he slowly lead Silas down a series of corridors to the mess hall. It was surprisingly compact with only a small bar with a couple of stools that was sat in front of the 3D food printer and a labeled food cartridge dispenser located next to printer. It was clear that this place was designed to have only a couple people to be in it at a time. Maul sat in the first stool he saw and rested his head in his crossed arms on the bar surface.

"I haven't stocked it up in while. I usually just stop at whatever station I'm near when I'm hungry." Maul said, muffled by the fact his face was buried in his arms.

He raised his head and looked at Silas.

"....Sorry about the whiskey., dude."
23 Mar 2022, 10:58pm
Maul Montresor
"....Sorry about the whiskey., dude."

Silas paused a moment to re-evaluate the conversation they had had.

"...Oh, yeah I could see how it would come across that way. I'm not mad about it, I'll share. You just kinda made it sound like you were a recovering alcoholic or something, what with your 'not a drop of alcohol in over a decade'."

His brow furrowed as he was going through the food cartridge options.

"No, I was only locking them up for your sake. If I misunderstood, well, then have at it, the stuff is amazing. Just share the bottle next time." he said jokingly, grinning sideways at Maul before tossing the cartridge he was looking at aside and dumping the rest of the basket on the bar to sort through them.

"Also... dude, how the hell do you survive in here? What do we have..."

Silas began to pick up cartridges and read them out loud:

"Salmon Egg Foo Young. Spotted Dick... I keep meaning to ask Lamb what that actually is. Cool Ranch Latke... why does that exist? Dry Pork and Seaweed Donuts? Dude were you just looking through the bargain bin at the sushi shop?"

He thought all hope was lost until he found the one, singular Holy Grail... "Ah, finally, Sausage and Cheese Omelette. That'll set you right."

Silas plugged it into the food printer and pressed the button.

"Now for me... I guess I'll go with, uh..." he held the note as he scanned through the remaining cartridges.
"...Alpaca Kebobs. Sure, whatever, I quit."

Silas pocketed the chosen cartridge, scooped the rest off the bar back into the basket, and started to put another pot of coffee on.
24 Mar 2022, 4:31pm
Maul raised his head.

"I'll be real with you. These are the cartridges that came with the ship when I bought it. I usually just stop at whatever station I'm near and grab a pizza or something. My Asp X is better stocked for these long haul kinda trips."

"Hindsight is 20/20, they say." He shrugged as he adjusted himself on the bar stool.

"Not a recovering alcoholic by the way. Well, not entirely...kind of...I guess." Maul stopped and tired to think of a better way to explain.

"I stopped drinking because...well, let's just put it this way. I'd get plastered, do some dumb shit and then a little while later, sober me would have to deal with the consequences of what drunk me did. It wasn't a very fun cycle. So I chose to just stay away from the stuff."

"That was just before I started working at the bar back home. I figured the best way to keep myself away from it was to be the one selling it. Seeing people constantly roll into the joint and getting hammered, it helped keep myself in check."

Maul chuckled.

"I think I was like...roughly 22 at the time I started at the bar. I don't know exactly, but I had been drinking pretty heavily on and off since I was like 17."

He took a deep breath, the smell of coffee in the air.

"Ya know, I met Lamb around that time too. She was just starting her liner business."

His tone quickly shifted, his face becoming devoid of emotion.

"Met Ortega then too."
24 Mar 2022, 5:18pm
Silas noticed Maul's tone change. He turned around and leaned backwards on the bar, facing Maul.

"You don't need to worry about that asshole anymore. You're friends with a sociopath billionaire that even the Cartel is afraid of, and a veteran mercenary who owns a multi-billion credit PMC. If he fucks with you he's gonna end up in a slowly decaying orbit around a white dwarf in the ass end of nowhere getting slowly cooked to death."

He leaned forward to check on the omelette. Almost done but not quite.
24 Mar 2022, 5:45pm
Maul exhaled a long breath through his nose and looked up from the bar at Silas.

"I know." He said with a nod.

"The dude is basically half alive from the looks of it. I just...I don't know. I feel like I'd be a different person now if it wasn't for him. The things they did to me. The things they'd done to countless people on that station. I guess it just pisses me off that they're still around."

Maul sighed.

"Ah, I dunno man, maybe I should just learn to just let things go and stop trying to play vigilante."

His brow furrowed as he looked back down at the bar.

"Shit usually goes awry when I try to help people anyway." Maul said, harkening back to the many deaths caused by his fight with Tessa Sonders and her 'Corporation'.
24 Mar 2022, 7:10pm
Silas reached into the printer and retrieved the omelette plate, quickly rushing it in front of Maul when he realized how hot it was. He let it sail the last few inches, where it was magnetically sucked down to the surface with a 'plunk', leaving the omelette itself behind, which Silas then had to press down to the plate with another clean plate he had grabbed for his own meal while muttering '...fucking gravity'.

"You know what they say, one 'aw shit' wipes out all your 'attaboy's." He said, shaking his hand in the air as if that was going to help his burned fingertips and hoping Maul wasn't awake enough to process the comedy of errors.

He turned back to the bar and started checking drawers for utensils.

"I bet if you were to take a second to think about it, you've done a lot more good than bad. I'm not gonna pretend shit doesn't happen, this ain't the movies, but it doesn't mean the trying isn't worth it."

Finding the correct drawer, he fished a fork out and handed it to Maul.

"The way I look at it, I'm happy with who I am, so I wouldn't want to change the things that made me, good or bad. I know you may not feel that way, but for what its worth, I'm glad you're you. My circle of good friends is small enough as it is."

Silas found a third plate, stuck it in the food printer, and started his alpaca kebobs. Then, he began the search for an oven mitt.
25 Mar 2022, 5:01pm
Maul rubbed the back of his head with on hand as he cut a bite of the omelette with the other.

"I appreciate the kind words." Maul said with half a smile, taking his first bite.

"Also," He paused to chew and swallow before continuing. "...sorry about all this shit I'm just unloading on you. I feel like I should be paying you for listening or something."

He downed a few more bites in quick repetition.

"It's just," His mouth was full this time as he continued to speak. "I dunno man, sometimes I let things get to me, other times I can just shrug it off but..." Maul audibly gulped down the mouth full of food. "...most the time I'm just alone and have no idea how to stop this nagging voice in my head that won't shut the fuck up."

Maul looked down at the plate and belched.

"Goddamn, this is really good. I should stock up on these."
25 Mar 2022, 5:24pm
Silas watched Maul wolf down the omelette, then looked down at the plate of weird kebabs he was holding in his mitted hand.

"Don't worry about it man... if I started charging I'd have to actually be good at it. My advice is worth what you paid for it, after all." he said, trying to lighten the mood a little but still looking with scrutiny at the alpaca meat as he picked up the kebab and sniffed it.

"When I need to shut my brain up, I focus on work. Probably not healthy but, hey, its functional." he said, before taking a bite of the kebob.

His face turned sour immediately, followed by his stomach letting out a godawful gurgle.

"Eh, table that bud... " was all he managed to say without throwing up as he plunked the magnetic plate down and *clonk*ed off to the latrine as quickly as he could.

Inside, he heard a loud whooshing sound, and realized that the vacuum suction motor on the toilet had been left on. Which was good, in case he really was going to vomit.

Silas pried the lid open against the suction.

"Oh for fuck's sake..." he mumbled, noticing that inside the toilet was Maul's slate, its corner wedged into the vacuum drain, with the pressure trying its hardest to pull the remaining dried bits of previously existing vomit from its screen.

He really wished he had time to remove it before he released the contents of his own stomach into the mix. Fortunately most of it got sucked right down.

"Maul!" he shouted down the hall, after composing himself.
"I uh... found your slate!"

Silas switched off the vacuum motor, and the slate, having been released from the suction, slowly started floating out of the bowl, dried vomit flakes and all.
