Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Roberto exited the elevator, and made his way to the table. Echoes of his rythmic, confident steps getting louder and louder with every second added to the omnious atmosphere of the meeting.

-"J.B. Threepwood, well... it's been a while." Roberto said, as he aproached the desk, giving out a quick smile at the end. The man did his best to make impression of being at ease. However, J.B., having dealt with many dangerous men many times before, he could easily see trough the act Roberto tried to pull. His subtle expressions betrayed frustration, if not outright anger. Something was off.

-"I Hope that you didn't expect me to arrive without a proper gift." Saying this, Roberto placed the box on the desk, and opened it. Inside rested a bottle of liquor, a Gin, made by one of many brewhouses of his homeworld. The product was pricey, but not of the highest price. A gift of taste, rather than of opulence. Contrary to his previous benefactor, Roberto never lived enclosed in the bubble of the high social strata and knew that the astronomical bills do not allways go in pair with astronomical quality.

-"Will that be absolutely necessary?" He added, whilst nodding his head at the two unpleasant types standing by the entrance.

JB was surprised to see Falcone, he’d been expecting La Arditezza’s boss, Saverio, he usually attended their meetings in person… but JB had worked with Roberto Falcone several times and things had always gone smoothly.

JB took the box from Falcone and nodded in thanks. He gave the bottle a quick glance. It was a nice brand that he’d tried before… nice enough that he’d put in his private bar aboard The Cuckoo rather than just firing down his throat from a hip flask. JB patted Falcone’s shoulder as he turned to face the empty table by the large window;

Wulthus

-"Will that be absolutely necessary?" He added, whilst nodding his head at the two unpleasant types standing by the entrance.

“Sorry, mate,” JB had to concede, “Fuck all I can do about those two… they’re with the Big House, not our boys.”

The two guards, even though out of earshot, could tell by JB and Falcone’s gesturing that they were been spoken about and turned their gaze down to their monitors.

“Always good to see you, Roberto,” JB stated as he gestured to one of the chairs for Falcone to take a seat, “… I was expecting Saverio to turn up for this one… the gaffer busy?”
01 Dec 2021, 2:53pm
Hearing J.B.'s explenation, Roberto simply nodded in understanding, and returned his gaze back to J.B., but not before taking a last, good look at the guards. The man visibly clenched his teeth upon hearing Saverio's name mentioned.

-"You will not be seeing Da Carrara ever again. Mister Threepwood. From now on, any deals you have with our organisation, will come trough me. Delivering his short speech, Falcone dropped the act completely. His stare was now dead cold, just like his voice.

Just a moment later, he disorderly dropped onto his chair, overwhelmed by his thoughts, and unceremoniously lighted up a cigarette.

-"Best we all forget that knob ever existed..."
02 Dec 2021, 1:14am
JB nodded as Roberto glossed over the departure of his former boss. Saverio Da Carrara had been a trusted partner for a long while. Even though JB knew Roberto Falcone to be trustworthy, in fact much more trustworthy than Saverio, “better the devil you know” was a reliable maxim to use in bubble politics… even in the quiet little backwaters that Jamaica Inn swam in.

JB fought the urge to enquire more, at least for now… Falcone obviously didn’t want to talk more on the subject so JB would have to rely on his contacts to find out what had gone down within La Arditezza later on.

Although he was very much drawn to stupid actions, JB wasn’t a stupid man. He quickly added up the situation… Saverio was out… Falcone was holding the reigns… Arditezza was calling in favours…
There had obviously been some sort of coup and Falcone was regrowing an army… hence looking to retrieve gang mates from this prison. At least that’s how JB had weighed up the situation in the time it took him to take his seat opposite Falcone.

“So,” JB began as he sat opposite Falcone, “I guess congratulations are in order for your promotion… I take it all our previous deals are still in place?”

-"I guess..." Roberto replied apathetically. The man got so fixated on fixing the mess made by his predecessor, he never really took a chance to stop and think about his position. Yes, It was true that in the peak of events he fled his homeworld to save his sorry skin, but then again who wouldn't? Those who did are the ones still alive. Ugly truth is that, ultimately, that's all that matters. He was the one to step up, roll up his sleeves and deal with the seemingly impossible situation at hand. It seems like the succession lines were obvious even to the outsiders. He was now the leader of the disgraced house. On top of that, given that the outsiders were still willing to deal with them, La Arditezza may have some future ahead afterall...

-"I will be twice the Don Da Carrara ever was." He mumbled, more to himself than to his interlocutor.

-"The deals are in place, but I'm afraid we might not deliver." Roberto continued, after getting his compolsure. "Da Carrara and Appiani feuded. Baron didn't come out of it alive. Things got heated. Da Carrara conveniently disappeares, and then, imperial services storm the place." Roberto paused here for a moment, collecting his thoughts. His mood soured.

-"My men are being hunted. Hanged on a piece of rug. They parade their bodies like it's carnival... Verdict read by the same stuffed up piece of shit that knighted them." He shook his head in disbelief, smiled ironicly and took a big, long smoke.

-"It's a clusterfuck out there, J.B." He continued. "Arexack is off limits. Gone. Dead. No production. No distribution. We need to lay low, until ... something ... some fucking miracle happends."
02 Dec 2021, 1:19pm
JB nodded once more, processing what had been said. Jamaica Inn Movement paid their debts, regardless of what had happened to Saverio Da Carrara, the debt was to La Arditezza as a whole… JB’d still see the prisoner released to Falcone.

The conman in JB could smell blood in the water… it’s a terrible way to look at others’ hardships but that’s why Jamaica Inn left these political dealings to him. Falcone and La Arditezza were obviously in a terrible state… for now. JB knew from experience that fortunes could change with the turning of a card. Having Falcone owing him favours now was much more palatable than having to creep for business once he’d got back on his feet;

“Don’t worry about supplies, mate,” JB began, dismissing the problem with a brushing gesture with one hand, “If they’re hunting your members then it makes sense to get your boy out of The Kitchen… I’ve had the displeasure of their hospitality in the past, he’d have been a sitting duck down there.”

JB could see from the window, in the far distance, the specks of ships coming from the prison planet below. It would be the prisoner aboard a dropship with it’s protective wing bringing it to the outpost.

“If there’s anything Uncle Jim can do,” JB continued, “just ask. We’ve got enough ships and capable pilots to move your crew around undetected… it’s what we do best, after all?”
03 Dec 2021, 11:28am
-"First, our boy..." Roberto paused to take a more comfortable position in his chair, clearly contented after hearing J.B.'s shallow assurances. Others might have simply dismissed his words as over-confidence. Falcone however, having the pleasure of working alongside the Jimies before, learned well never to underestimate resourcefulness of Threepwood and his organisation. For the movement, being underestimated was allways a part of the plan.

-"Actually, there's something Uncle Jim could do for us, with regards to the convict. As much as hospitality in that wreck is ... well ... sub-par at best, still there's at least two tonnes of steel and a dozen pieces of hardware between him and the open...

The man leaned closer, and looked his interlocutor directly in the eye, trying to read weather his carefull words were well understood by the other party.

-"I need him to stay there. Safe. Untouched. If he gets out right now, I guaranteee to you that in twenty-four hours he will end up in a ditch somewhere. I don't need that. Doable?"
03 Dec 2021, 7:32pm
JB smiled, gave a gentle shrug then leant back in his chair.

“More than doable, mate. If you believe that place is the safest place for him then I’ll send a message out and get the ship turned around.”

If things were as bad for La Arditezza as Falcone had described then JB didn’t have much faith in The Kitchen being a safe place. As the prison was left to run itself autonomously away from his organisation, their control over singular convicts was a little out of his reach. Although he wouldn’t want to admit it to Falcone, the best JB could hope for is that they’d take the prisoner out of Gen-Pop… at worse he’d spend his time in solitary until he was released.

Falcone still seemed quite guarded… maybe he didn’t want to run up too many debts… but this was how Jamaica Inn had ended up owing Arditezza in the first place. These little dances, a favour here and a favour there, it’s how bubble politics moved along. It might leave a sour taste at times but it’s better than going it alone.

JB was a little furious that his contacts around Arexack hadn’t let him know about Saverio leaving his outfit high-and-dry. He liked to have all the bases covered when entering these kinds of meetings. Hearing that a lot of La Arditezza had been taken out was sad news indeed… he’d dealt with most of the gang personally and they got on well with his own organisation. If things were that bad, JB wondered why Falcone would stick his head up just to ask JB to keep a prisoner in his cell… he figured there must be more to this meeting;

“It’s always nice to have these little chats, Roberto,” JB said as he took a comms unit from his pocket and placed it on the table, ready to send the convict back, “but I’m guessing there’s more we can do for you? When La Arditezza and Uncle Jim made the Allegiance Pact it’s for better times and worse, brother. If you need our help, don’t let your pride stop you from asking. You know me, Roberto, and pride doesn’t put food on the table.”
04 Dec 2021, 11:11am
Roberto shook his head.

-"It doesn't, but it's better to die of starvation than to soil all over youself and your familly..."

The man straightened his posture and joined his hands.

-"I figured we have two options. One: we spread out, keep our heads down, and, maybe, in a few months we may or may not get our shit together and, maybe, do business as usuall. Now you probably see the problem with that brilliant sollution, if not, I'll clue you in. Fuckton of "maybes" on every step..."

Roberto briefly looked down, and shook his head again.

-"Now, option two. We roll with the crew three-hundredth light-years away from any ISF, IED or bloody KCOI operatives. My men stay together, keep sharp, word gets out that La Arditezza isn't dead, but still kicking. The storm calms. Business as usuall. So far, I know only one reliable outfit ticking all the boxes..."

Saying this, Roberto pointed his open hand towards J.B., in a presenting manner.

-"Our name doesn't ring any bells in this sector. We'll need you to vouch for us. I didn't come here to beg for charity... However, in our current situation it's easier for us to offer our services, rather than assets. I'm pretty confident that you have a situation on your hands that could use gentle care..."

Again, Roberto looked J.B. in the eyes inquisitively.

-"... Like Lambur?"
05 Dec 2021, 1:07am
JB paused as he mulled Falcone’s motion over in his head.

Jamaica Inn were comfortable and didn’t need to rack up more favours with Arditezza. Lambur was a “Bridesmaid” system for JB’s organisation. Courtesy of their Red friends of the local communist armies, they were free to take the spare assets of the Lambur System so long as they didn’t push for control… just another part of bubble politics you had to swallow from time to time.

JB appreciated that Falcone was willing to sing for his dinner rather than take a hand-out. JB had faith in Falcone’s ability to get his organisation back on their feet, it was the main reason he wanted Falcone to start running up a tab with Jamaica Inn. Lambur was of no interest to Jamaica Inn but there was plenty of use for good pilots who wanted to hide out… most of his organisation was made up of pilots who wanted to start afresh away from the middle of the bubble after all.

“There’s always a home for your family with ours,” JB began, trying to sound as comforting as possible, “We need gardeners, clipping the lawns; trimming the trees, keeping our grounds tidy…”
Gardening was a common term for keeping controlled systems in order… keeping native factions low and Jamaica Inn in the majority… having extra pilots fulfilling this essential part of maintaining systems was a weight off his own shoulders if Falcone agreed.

“It’s not a glamorous job but it’s work for your family if you want it?… Just till you get on your feet, of course?”
06 Dec 2021, 11:17am
Roberto couldn't help but smile hearing the slang term J.B.'s crew uses to describe actions taken to destabilise their opposition. False flag operations, blackmail, hot cargo runs, arson at times, compared to gardening. A chore considered meditative by many cultures of the known world. The irony was just too sweet for Falcone to handle it.

Taking care of someone else's back yard was indeed less-than-glamorous work for the group with already established reputation like La Arditezza, but, as the men have established earlier, in their situation, it was simply lesser of the two evils.

Roberto waved his hand in a dismissing manner.

-"Eh, screw the glamour. Weed control is what we do best. Deal."

As he finished his sentence, Falcone reached for his empty glass from the table. He then proceeded to examine the tableware his interlocutor had prepared.

-"J.B, J.B., J.B...." The man released a deep sigh. "What the actuall fuck. Are you seriously going to make me raise a toast to our profitable future with water?"
06 Dec 2021, 8:42pm
JB gave a cheeky smile, accompanied by a cheeky wink, then took the bottle of gin from the small wooden box.

Things could’ve been a little more profitable from this exchange if he’d had been given better intel from his contacts, got a stronger deal if he’d known from the start that Falcone was enduring a shitstorm induced by the departure of Saverio… but, on the other hand, things could have sparked off if he’d pushed the wrong buttons. An important lesson JB’d learnt early on about bubble politics was that the best victories are the ones earned without ever having to go to war.

JB still got his victory, he got a small army of accomplished pilots to work for Jamaica Inn MovementLa Arditezza got a safe bolt hole, hidden deep in a briar patch of Communist systems, from where they could rally and start afresh. JB would be able to take this back to his bosses and receive that all important pat-on-the-back.

As JB started to pour out two glasses of gin he nodded to the window… gesturing towards the prisoner aboard the incoming transfer ship;
“Do you still want me to send your boy back to The Kitchen now you’ve got somewhere to lay low?” JB asked, knowing how the poor bastard would be feeling with freedom a mere few LS away. “I’m still to send confirmation of his return to the cells?”
07 Dec 2021, 10:47am
Roberto returned the cheeky smile as he watched J.B. filling up his glass. For the first time in a few weeks, things seemed to go well for the man. Finally. It was time for celebation, and well earned rest. Falcone didn't even wait for his interlocutor to join in his toast.

-He's coming back, like we've prevously discussed. I bet your ass he was shitting all over himself on his way here. Us establishing a foothold here doesn't really make a difference...

-"... It makes matters worse, actually." He added, again mumbling to himself.

Roberto took another swig of his gin and glanced at the window J.B. was pointing at just a moment ago.

-"Actually, you took all the effort to bring him here ... you think I can get a chance to talk to the sorry bastard before I bugger off?"
07 Dec 2021, 4:43pm
JB grinned and shrugged in reply as he took a swig from his glass.
“The room’s all yours, chief… Lucky Numbers,” he toasted as he finished his drink, then got up out of his chair. “The guard detail will take your boy back down to The Big House... a shuttle can take you back to your ship aboard the “Head Chef”. I’ve got to bounce but, as always, it’s been good to see you, brother.”

JB extended his hand out for Roberto Falcone to shake.
09 Dec 2021, 10:27am
-"Sure, sure.... It was good to see you too, brother, in one piece and all..."

Falcone quickly finished up his drink and shook J.B's hand. One hard talk was now behind him. There was another one coming, right there on the prison shuttle idling outside the station. Hard talk with a hard decision to make.

Just before he left, he paused to finish up his smoke. Roberto approached a window, getting a good look at the ship. A worry returned to his face. A few moments later, Falcone dropped his cigarette butt on the ground, and stomped it. He then released a deep sigh, and again, regained his compolsure. It was time to head towrds the exit.
