Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

She felt her eye widen when he suggested boarding her ship “Er NO! I mean no, or like no thank you, take your own ship ok?”

If he was a plant, or passing info on to the who evers, she’d have a much better chance of getting way using her Python.

“So like, once we’re on board we’ll sync up, and I’ll give you all the info on the pod you popped for me, and the ship it come from. Then you see what you can find on that ship ok? I’ll let you know where in the Coalsack I found it after sync, and that’s where we’ll be heading, ok?”

"Yeah, sure, alright." Maul reluctantly agreed but tried to hide it.

He hated flying. Well, he hated flying alone. Being alone leads to racing thoughts and memories that he'd rather not think about.

"Well, I uh, I got some stuff I have to sort out back on my ship before we head out. So, I'll do that and you just hit me up on comms when you're ready to leave."

Maul exhaled sharply as he slipped the data drive into his backpack as he grabbed it off the floor.

"See you out there." He said, standing up, giving a brief glance to Willow before heading towards the lifts.
26 Nov 2022, 10:37pm
Prep was easy. Willow had been waiting for Descartes to be well enough for visitors for days, so the Bramble had been prepared well in advance. After she had been granted clearance to leave, an automated message played from flight control.

“We would like to warn all pilots that heavy Thargoid activity has been reported in the Coalsack Nebular, and we advise everyone to avoid the Coalsack. Thank you, and have a safe flight”

“That’s just cosmic, right?” Willow candled the launce request and booked the Bramble for a refit. Her shutdown field neutraliser was on the Wisp; she wanted that if Goids were a possibility. Her wing mate needed warning that take off time was postponed for a little bit.

“Hay Maul? Sorry to like, bother you, but I need a quick refit. Gonna be like an hour ok? Oh, and if you got and Goid or Guardian stuff on board, it’ll be best to leave it behind, ok? Don’t want any extra attention, right?”

All Willow could do now was wait for the ground crew to work their magic.
26 Nov 2022, 10:58pm
Another red tablet dissolved on Maul's tongue as he ran a few checks on his heavily modified ships computer systems. He was no longer abiding by the dealers recommended schedule for the drugs. What did he know anyway?

Metal music blared through the ships internal sound system at ear piecing levels as he did all he could to distract himself from his thoughts. An array of holo projector screens were cast in front of him. Willows message appeared on one.

"Fuckin Goids?!" He shouted to no avail, it was lost in the music.

Maul had one encounter with a Thargoid and that was enough for him. One yanked him out of witchspace a few years back and left him helpless at it scanned him. Thankfully it left shortly after the scan but it also left Maul petrified.

"Yeah, no Anti Goid or Guardian tech over here. Thanks for the heads up."

There was fear hidden in the message, but thankfully words on a screen made it easier to hide.

With no Guardian FSD Booster, it took much longer to get to the Coalscak. Maul had worked his hacker magic and created a program to search for Descartes ship in the beacon logs after Willow supplied him with all the info she had from the pod.

Descartes was playing on Willows mind, she felt used and abandoned, and she was still upset about it. She flicked the coms to open and pinged Maul.

“Hay Maul, like, do you have many friends you hang out with?”
27 Nov 2022, 12:06am
Maul turned the music down and unmuted his side of the coms after taking a moment to contemplate the answer to her question.

"Uh...not really, no. Not anymore, I guess. Not like actual friends or whatever. Just people I work with on occasion. We never spend time together outside of a job, I guess is what I'm trying to say"

That was more wordy than he expected.

"So, no."
27 Nov 2022, 12:13am
“Right right, I guessed that, you know? I could tell”

Willow had her arms folded on the dash and her chin resting on her forearms.

“So like, is that your choice? Do you actually like flying solo with no one helping you out?”
27 Nov 2022, 12:23am
There was a heavy pause from his side.

"Not...particularly no. I mean, I made the choice to be alone but...it's complicated I guess. Like, I feel like I'm just bad luck, ya know? Like, whenever I'm around bad things happen. So if I stay away from people I actually care about then maybe like..."

He knew how ridiculous he sounded but was trying to find a way to express exactly how he felt. It sounded as thought he was trying to convince himself of his own beliefs

"...like maybe they'd be safe? Which I know isn't always true but...sometimes...I-I don't know."

Maul took his eyes of the canopy and rested his head back on the seat staring up at the exposed wires taped down overhead.
27 Nov 2022, 12:36am
“Oh right, so you know what's best for everyone in your life, I guess. Coz you like, so clearly make great life choice”

There was annoyance in her voice, and the image of two cups of tea going cold because Willow got a message from her brother filled her mind.

“So, you take your self away from so-called friends because you don’t trust them to help out with your shit, is that it?”

Using a communicator was way easy compared to talking to people face to face, and now everything that was swimming around Willows head had found a way out. That flow wouldn’t stop till it was done.

“I suppose you just help yourself to someone’s bed and like, just F O before the sausage slice gets cold as soon as you decide you know better, right?”
27 Nov 2022, 12:52am
Maul's shot a confused look back down to the little voice wave indicator on the coms screen.

"That's not...no...I'm the one...wait...that's a very specific metaphor."

He had no clue what Willow was on about but felt compelled to defend himself in some way.

"It's not because I don't trust others to help me. I do it because I'm sick of always being the one who's bringing more trouble into their lives."

"All these stupid awful choices I make, I'm tired of others bailing me out and I'm tired of dragging others into my stupid world...."

Maul released a deep sigh.

"...I lov-...care for them and don't want them to hurt because of me...and when I inevitably kick the bucket, I want it to be far away from any of them so they don't have to feel like it was their fault or that they failed in saving my stupid ass from another failed operation."

"So yeah, I guess I'm the kind of person to fuck off before the sausage gets cold or whatever but it's because I don't want them getting used to me being at the dinner table and missing me when I'm not."
27 Nov 2022, 1:13am
Now Willow was gripping the dash and glaring at the mic as if daring it not to listen to her.

Maul Montresor
"That's not...no...I'm the one...wait...that's a very specific metaphor."

Crap, it was very specific. Another good thing about talking to people over the coms was they couldn’t see you change expression when you fucked up.

"...I lov-...care for them and don't want them to hurt because of me...and when I inevitably kick the bucket, I want it to be far away from any of them so they don't have to feel like it was their fault or that they failed in saving my stupid ass from another failed operation."

This time Willow listened rather than let the problem-stew in her head boil over again, but it still flavoured her response.

“So you do have people you love in your life, but you still chose if they can be there for you or not. How would it make you feel if they were on a dark path all alone, and deliberately kept you away so you couldn’t help out? Do you think you’d be saying Gee-whiz, Geoff is so considerate keeping me out of his troubles. I can’t wait till I see him again; he’ll be completely fubar by then. What a guy!”

“You loners have a pretty fucked up version of doing what’s best, you know?”

Willow had been so deep in her head talking with.. ok, talking at Maul, that she didn’t realise they were already in the Coalsack. They only had a few jumps to go until they were back in the system, where she had scooped Descartes pod.
27 Nov 2022, 6:54pm
Willow Thorn“You loners have a pretty fucked up version of doing what’s best, you know?”

"Yeah, I know."

Maul couldn't disagree with her. He was painfully aware of the mistakes he'd made in the past because of his terrible decisions he'd made. The thought of them haunted him to this day.

Following Willow's path, he spun up the FSD and targeted the next system.

"I can't sit here and tell you everything that's happened but if you'd have seen or been through some of the shit I have. You may be likely to better understand why I've made the decisions I've made. I know they're fucked up choices but it's all I know. It's all that a lot of us, as you say, 'loners' know."
27 Nov 2022, 8:45pm
Refuelling for the first of many such stops, I had time to let my mind wander, perhaps more memory would return. I was already regretting my treatment of Willow. Checking out without explanation was unforgivable. On the other hand, I regrated getting her involved in my personal hell in the first place. She could be killed, watched, followed everywhere. I should have given her a reward for saving my life, thanked her, and left it at that.

I opened the cargo-hatch and ejected my old escape pod. Executing a lazy 180 turn and engaging a beam laser I vapourised the now useless pod.

I more or less decided that Willow was trustworthy, still not sure about her junkie hacker. That left two possibilities, as far as I could see.

First. It was my old obsessive Imperial Nemesis, albeit a long way from home. He would pursue me to my grave, unless he died first. Keeping my ship jas a lure to draw me in.

Second. It was someone who shared my own obsession and was looking for what was now safely ensconced in my new escape pod. Valuable, but not worth killing for. Now they might have my ship.

Either way, the sensible thing to do was write of my ship, collect the insurance, and move on. When did I ever do the sensible thing.

"Yeah whatever right? I can't say I got all the answers, and I guess I'm misdirecting on you. I should know better"

Willow had been giving Maul a hard time over something someone else had done because she saw similarities between him and Descartes. She hadn't even really been listening to him; she'd been looking for a reason to unload her bile on someone, and he happened to be a good target.

"But hey, maybe those people you love want to wade into your shitstorm and you're hurting them more by leaving them out. Think of that, yeah?"

The Coalsack was dark; very little light travelled through it, making each star a shallow well of light in a void of shadow. The makeup of the nebular meant that the solar winds were also as subdued as the light. With very careful calibration of the sensors, a pilot that knew what to look for could find evidence of a ship that had passed through the obsidian miasma weeks ago.

Thanks to Maul's efforts, Willow knew everything she needed to know about Descartes ship. Beacons had logged it going towards the Coalsack, and Willow knew where Descartes was heading, but her Corvette hadn’t been logged by any of the few beacons and carriers outside the Coasack, so it was still in there. The obvious place to start was where she had found the pod.

In moments Willow found the fumes left by the Wisp, her Diamondback, and she picked up the stretched swirl left after she jumped out. Now she recalibrated for Descartes Corvette. Willow knew what class and size of every Module Descartes was using for the exploration journey thanks to Maul, so she knew what to look for in the cloud. He had even found security footage of her ship leaving a station on the way out of the bubble.

It took some searching because the pod had been drifting for a while before Willow found it, but she picked up a trace of spent fuel that was very likely from the ship that dropped the pod. Following the trail lead to a much bigger ripple left by a much bigger FSD; there was no wake to scan, but it did give Willow a direction to aim for.

Knowing the jump range of Descartes Corvette helped, but she still had over 30 stars to search for trace evidence of a Corvette having entered the system over a week ago. Still, that was the job, so Willow got on with it. The 23rd system housed an unremarkable cold red dwarf that was orbited by a trio of gas giants that each played shepherd to a handful of supremely frigid moons that hadn’t been touched by the light of their star for millions of years. What this unremarkable system did have, was a trace of exhaust from a large FSD dissipating around the entry point.

An hour or so of scans didn’t find any trace of an exit jump, so Willow decided to check each moon and the rings of the gas giants. She was thinking some had dumped Descartes, and then jumped away to search her ship in peace. If they had let it drift into the star after they were done, Willow would have no way to know. But if they left Descartes alive, then there was a good chance they wouldn’t destroy her ship in case whatever they were looking for was still on it, hidden somewhere clever.

On the way out to the closest giant, a signal appeared on Willows target list. Combat aftermath, no threat rating. It made sense; if someone had got aboard the Corvette, they would need to get off again. Flying a stolen ship isn’t wise, so they would have organised transport off, right? And maybe they shot it up after leaving out of frustration. With the signal locked, Willow and Maul headed in.

They hadn’t even dropped, and Willow was congratulating herself for finding the right grain of sand on a beach. It had taken the best part of a day after they had dropped into the place she first scooped the pod, but it was done. She convinced herself no one else would be out here with a Thargoid warning in effect; it had to be the Corvette.

The two ships dropped in one after the other; they were greeted with a silky blackness that was impenetrable. Not even night vision could push through the unnatural vail of the Coalsack.

“Take it slow Maul, keep my wing lights in view. Man, this must be like, you know, water ships that deal with water vapour in the atmosphere. What’s that called? Anyway, this has to be like that”

A Python and a Krait drifted slowly towards the signal. Willow checked her close range sensors were still working by highlighting Mauls ship.

“Hey Ghoul! Your ship is called Ghoul. I get called a ghoul a lot. We’re like, connected, right?”

She was in a good mood now. A job well done always made Willow happy. It was another check mark to show her overprotective family that little-quiet-Willow could do it on her own. With a smile ruling her lips, Willow activated the impressive light racks that had been installed on the Bramble.

The dozens of spotlights lit up something big, a little over 100 meters in front of Willows ship. Before she had a chance to work out what it was, the Thargoid vessel awoke and yellow ribbons of energy flowed from its centre on a non-existent wind, wrapping themselves around Willows ship.

“Oh crap”

The Ghoul’s cockpit was washed in a yellow hue. Maul’s jaw agape. He gripped the flight control stick tightly and held his breath as he watched Willow’s ship be scanned.

“Stay cool, stay cool.” He helplessly whispered to himself.

A familiar creaking groan came from above. Maul’s eyes locked on to another Thargoid vessel that began to slowly approach his own ship.
It was impossible to rip his gaze. Half in fear, half in wonder.

“Willow, I’m not sure if you can still hear me….” He said. His voice shaking. Not checking if the com link was still connected or not.

“I’m…s-s-sorry about this” He pushed the throttle forward and maneuvered the control stick in an attempt to evade the threat that wasn’t a threat yet.

With his finger resting on the boost and the loud groaning growing louder, he already began to regret his decision.
