Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Watching Silvia's Challenger finally jumping to safety, I turned my own music system on and targeted the crippled Hydra, that was following me like a wounded rabid dog, without a single chance to succeed, and dead determined to bite me at least once. The beast was shattered, torn, leaving a trail of greenish acid drops as it kept chasing me with a deranged persistency, it struggled to keep a stable speed and trajectory, sliding away or lagging behind.

"Now, you're mine."

I slowed my movement down to a total halt and then added a bit of side thrust, beginning the circle, letting the Hydra to come closer, but still staying out of reach. Once it got close enough, I dropped a heatsink and moved in closer, sending a volley of a deadly shrapnel ripping pieces of its hull, and exerting the last heart. Firing wildly in a desperate, hopeless attempt, it still managed to graze my left stabilising fin, but that's all. My cannons reloaded, and another rain of projectiles shattered the last heart of the beast, making it moan in agony.

Still, too big and chonky to go down right after the last heart. But that last shield looked like... Raising a bare hand, trying to stop the heavy sword falling on the head. Soon, it was gone, disappearing in the cloud of acid and jagged debris, sending its last dying roar into the cosmic void.

I punched the system name into the navcomp and jumped freely, without anything interfering with the charge.

"Hey, Silv. I nailed that bastard."
12 Jun 2023, 7:03pm
Marshmallow drops into the system and into the airspace for the Fleet carrier. I let out a sigh of relief when I hear Ina's voice.

'I'm glad you're ok. Carrier is ready for us to dock. Are we waiting for Creamy or are we getting the hell out of dodge?. Either way there should be something for us to drink when we get to the lounge.'

I engage my thrusters and notice severe output reduction I take a look at my modules health and see the main drive is pretty badly damaged Celeste calls over the internal comms.

"WARNING! Thruster malfunction."

Alarms go berserk there is a groaning sound coming from the right side main thruster followed by a trail of smoke. Sparks and flames erupt from the outlet before the thruster explodes. I call over to the Normandy for emergency clearance.

'Normandy Sierra India Lima requesting immediate and emergency docking protocols. I just lost a main and am struggling to keep her straight.'

'Lakon spaceways Sierra India Lima you are cleared for emergency docking.'

I proceed to the landing pad smoke and hydrogen flames pouring out from the thruster. I line up for landing and slam into the pad. The landing gear collapsing due to the corrosive damage sustained and the canopy shattering upon impact. I slam down into my seat as the momentum from Ranger stops abruptly. The pad is immediately pulled inside and the hangar doors close as the fire suppression system activates smothering the flames That erupt as oxygen in introduced.

My hands are shaky and the thought of what just transpired rushes around in my head. I had entered the dragons maw and escaped relatively unharmed. I rush to grab Melli and run to the on ship lab to check her over and ensure she isn't injured internally. As I exit the hangar I call over to Ina.

'Go ahead and dock I got confirmation that you are cleared to request landing. You don't have to stay but they can at least patch you up if you need it.'
12 Jun 2023, 7:20pm
"Shit. Hang on!", I shouted to the comms seeing Silvia's thruster exploding. It could be a hell of a shame to eject next to the carrier just after what we've been through. But then, waiting for my own clearance, I saw her landing the crippled Challenger safely.

My communicator beeps as I descend and align Marshmallow with a landing pad.

"Thank you. I'll tell them to refuel me and patch up the vital systems. It shouldn't take long. Can I... Have something to drink in that place?"

Landing pad descended, moving Marshmallow into the inner hangars of the carrier, and I got up from the pilot seat to put my armour off and stretch my legs a little in zero gravity. Just before throwing the communicator back into my pocket, I connected it to Marshmallow's onboard computer and copied the last few minutes of cam footage, with exploding Hydra. Thinking that Silvia might like that view.
12 Jun 2023, 7:34pm
'Drinks? Ya. Head to the lounge I'll meet you there I have something pressing to attend to right now.'

I enter the lab and lay Melli on the table. I perform a physical on her and feel no broken bones. The CT scan shows no internal bleeding so I place her armor back on and we head to the lounge to meet with Ina do decompress. Melli has a slight limp taking care to avoid too much pressure on her left front leg. We enter the lounge and take off the chest protector placing it on the back of a chair.

I let out a long shaky sigh and take a seat. Melli lays down next to the chair. I look to the sommelier on duty.

'Something strong please.'
12 Jun 2023, 7:56pm
I followed the signs to reach the pilots lounge on the carrier after quickly showing the damage to the hangar tech crew. Thankfully, my heavily upgraded modules were somewhat fine, and what did require repairs was more standardised. Namely, those air flow fans with their oil leak, some ruptured coolant circuits, a few shock absorbers here and there, a bunch of power cables and so on. Fried manoeuvring thruster wasn't compatible with anything they had, but I could make my way to one of AXDF outposts without it anyway.

Entering the lounge, I saw Silvia and Melli sitting there awfully silent, and there was a zero-g glass of some strong drink on the table, at which Silvia blankly stared. Well... I pretty much guessed she was totally drained. Waving my hand to them as I enter, I took a big mug of dark beer at the bar and joined.

"Thank you, Silvia. I appreciate that greatly. Both as an AX pilot and as a human being. Are you two alright?"

'Huh? Oh. ya don't mention it.'

I take a mouth full of the double rum and cola. I reach into a pouch on my hip and pull out a pack of mint chocolate flavor cigarettes. I feel around my pouch for Venus' lighter and sigh.

'Got a light? That back there.... what we just went through...' *I shake the thought out of my head and light the cigarette* 'Melli has a sprained shoulder and I am sure I have some bruised ribs. We will live though.'

I rub my neck and let out a shaky breath.

'I don't think I'll be going back into that storm again. How are doing? No new holes?'
12 Jun 2023, 8:17pm
"Now, that is a lot of Thargoids" said Creamy looking at the scope, and the small swarm closing in fast.

Flying backwards wasn't going to work out, but thankfully Meowers and the mystery pilot had taken out the big ones, what ever they were called. Pulling on the stick, the Knight turned back to the heart of the maelstrom and Creamy pushed on the throttle hearing the stick groan under the pressure he was putting on it as his thumb rhythmically pressed the boost.

Human signals started to appear on the scope amongst the swarm. With nothing else in range, the Thargoids took their rage out on Vengerfirlds ships. Meowers and her friend must have really pissed them off.

Feeling somewhat guilty about the people dying Creamy opened his coms again. The Marshmallow, the mystery ship, and the Knight were made to stand up to the alian weapons. Vengerfields fleet wasn't.

"Listen ladies and gentlemen, I'm not worth your life. I'm heading deeper into the maelstrom, so this is only going to get worse for you. Do not follow"

Creamy dropped a limpet on the Knight and charged the FSD for supercruise. It was time to see one of these Thargoid behemoths for himself.

"I say chap, do you know how this new Wave Emitter whats-a-majig works?" He asked Vodan "The owner had it fitted, but I've got no idea how to use it"
12 Jun 2023, 8:31pm
A sight of Silvia breathing shakily made me think that showing her the Hydra Explosion video might be not the best option for now. Taking a sip of beer... Yeah, I'm not so absolutely tee-total, more like, I don't like the idea most of the time... So, taking a sip of beer, I supported Silvia's smoking by opening the pack of vanillas from Galactic and pulling one cigarette out of it. Sweet-flavoured smoke made me close my eyes relaxedly for a moment.

"I'm fine. Techs are patching up important systems at the moment. So that I could proceed with my assignment and get to proper repairs and sleep at the outpost I'm heading to."

Another sip of beer finally neutralised that annoying dryness in my mouth, since, yeah, that last cup of coffee in Galactic mostly ended up on my uniform.

"Damn it. Sorry. Should've warned you. You were just out of the medical, and now that. I'd really like to... I dunno. Help with something. You look totally drained, and that's explainable. But maybe a presence of a friendly face after all that could do okay."
12 Jun 2023, 8:45pm
'Thanks. And look no need to feel bad.. this was my doing. I put myself there to ensure you could at least have some support to be able to make it back to this mystery lady of yours.'

I give Ina a light shove on the should and look into the glass in front of me spinning it slowly.

'I haven't been near a Medusa since Gnosis... and even then I wasn't fighting it I was running from it. If I told you it didn't bother me I'd be lying. I haven't told anyone this but the reason I don't want to fight the Thargoids is because I am terrified of them. Even with you there that looming thought of I'm going to die was right there.'

I take a drag off the cigarette and let it out slowly. A small smile forms on my face.

'Heh Venus would kill me if she knew I was smoking again.'
12 Jun 2023, 9:01pm
"Thank you", I made another drag of vanilla-flavoured smoke. "That's why we mostly fight in wings... That reminded me of one pilot from my former wing. A young boy, in his early twenties, was afraid of being stranded in space, left alone, in a disabled ship. His hands were shaking every time he saw a Thargoid. Then, scored dozens of kills, protecting thousands of civilians, after slowly realising that we, people, are there for each other."

Caught myself staring none less blankly at my own mug, and, interrupting my stream of thoughts, took another sip of that pleasant cold drink.

"Ah, smoking, drinking, whatever... It's all not about the habits that a person has, but more about the person who has those habits. You need an escape sometimes. Or something to help you make it through another day."

"But, in the end, this day is ours", I raised the mug as if making a toast.
12 Jun 2023, 9:18pm
'To new friends and future memories.'

I say the words and raise my glass. Afterwards I take a long slow drink and look out the large window into the emptiness of space. This universe we live in has a strange way of showing its true beauty even in the worst of circumstances. I turn back to Ina and reach into a small pouch on my waist. From it I pull out a small figurine bearing a striking resemblance to Melli.

'Here. Take this as a token of thanks. You saved my life in that bar I'm told. For that I am forever grateful. Now if you'll excuse me I am in desperate need of some rest. I hope to see you out there Ina. Fly safe, live Dangerously.'

I finish my drink, offer Ina a parting hug, grab my chest protector off the chair and head to a nearby crew room for some much needed rest. Melli rubs against Ina as if to say you are a friend to me and limps after me.

I took a figurine with a nod of gratefulness and put it into the chest pocket of my uniform. Hugging Silvia in return and giving Melli a gentle scratch behind her ears, I got back to my beer and my thoughts.

"New friends and future memories"

Essentially, creating new good memories, making them outweigh old bad ones, was something that I've been trying to do those last months. I can't get rid of old and bad, since that's how our minds work, but I can reach the position of peace, and eventually overshadow that old and bad with something good and new. And that good and new, thinking rationally, is nothing else but an outcome of going through old and bad. It is easy to create good from good, but transforming bad into good takes a significant effort. Then, it pays off, many times over, and could possible be something that can change a life. Am I really in the middle of a change to the better? Everything tells me that yes, I am.

Finishing the drink, I bought a pack of spiced dehydrated meat to absent-mindedly chew on during the long journey to the AXDF outpost, and returned to the cockpit, where I spent a little more time relaxing with my eyes closed, waiting for the techs to finish their work. Once Marshmallow's primary systems were patched up enough to complete the assignment safely and fuel tanks were filled, I plotted my route to the outpost, carefully took off and made a jump to the first system on the route.

A couple more days and I'm back at the camp.

Creamy Goodness III
Creamy dropped a limpet on the Knight and charged the FSD for supercruise. It was time to see one of these Thargoid behemoths for himself.

"I say chap, do you know how this new Wave Emitter whats-a-majig works?" He asked Vodan "The owner had it fitted, but I've got no idea how to use it"

He didn’t want to see what the camera drone was showing him, but Vodan kept watching. The Goids were cutting the Anansi fleet to pieces without mercy. Whatever Meowers had done pissed them off, and with Creamy pulling away from the swarm Vodans ex-fleet mates were all they had to take it out on.

Raiders and pirates didn’t mess with Goids, so they were not equipped to deal with even a Cyclops attacking. The skies were thick with scouts swarming around the interceptors and there were more than just cyclops chasing down the Anansi pilots. There was a Fer-de-Lance coming up on Creamys’ ship A Knight of Goodness. It was moving fast diving and banking to avoid the packs of Goids, perusing the target they were sent for.

Keying the com to his helmet headset, Vodan listened to the pilot Creamy was ignoring.

“ ..ed us all. You’re fuckin dead, DEAD YOU HEAR ME. Fuck the orders”

The FDL was approaching fast, but the Knight was moving fast as well, and the FDL wasn’t geared to run cool. The Thargoids chasing Creamy found a new, warmer target in easy reach of their weapons. As the Witch-Space tunnel opened in front of the Knight, the FDL was lost in green explosions and yellow flashes. He turned the coms off.

Radio silence has been broken. A slightly deep, energetic voice melodically cracked through the speakers. Station noises and announcements could be heard on his background.

"Good day. Anyone online?"

The voice asked optimistically.

As I enter Sol I open my messages and see one from Kira.

Hey.

Not sure where you've gone off to after your adventure into the Maelstrom*, but I'll be leaving the station for a day or two. Maybe a few. So don't expect me to be around there. You ever need help with anything, feel free to ask, and I'll see if I can do anything.

- Kasumi(maybe I'll tell you my real name some day... or maybe not, I quite like this one too)

*I'd have helped more than sending the carrier but was too tired, and really didn't want to get involved in any fighting. And I really don't want to be shooting Thargoids up again.

I reply while sitting near earth.

Hey Kas

Don't worry about it too much. I understand your hesitation. As for where I went well, Melli and I went home. I'm originally from Earth and with recent events I decided I should spend some time back here. If you find yourself in Sol stop by Earth and we can catch up. For now I have something to attend to here. Thank you for everything and keep the tanzanite as a bit of a Memento.

Goodbye for now,

Silvia

I press send and descend down to the planetary surface. As I break through the clouds I see the ruins of my family home. I touch down on the landing pad tears in my eyes as I look at the crumbled home.
