Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Continued from the docks

'Kira. Come on you are not going to stay on this ship and sulk the whole time we are here.'

I stand outside of Kira's cabin speaking through the door. She has locked me out and refuses to exit the ship. I try to get Edi to give me access.

'Edi unlock Kira's cabin please.'

"Sorry Silvia I cannot show access unless Kira decides to give it. Or like previous events she is incapable of making a decision on her own."

'Ugh.... fine. Kira come on. It's beautiful outside. You could at least go on a walk with Melli for a bit. It'll do you some good.'
02 Jul 2023, 5:06pm
I rolled my eyes inside the cabin, really not feeling bothered to go outside at all. I already needed to wear a suit right now to stay on my feet in the 1G environment of Earth, given poor physical condition from lack of sleep and eating, on top of a lack of exposure to proper gravity, and going out to get a sunburn really didn't feel like a bother I wanted either. Plus, I liked the relative darkness within the ship, where it was cool, too.

"Why? It's hot outside, and I'll just get a horrible sunburn after just a few minutes too."

I didn't need to say that I had no interest in seeing any of the people outside, in no small part due to my insistence on wearing a black hood, which really didn't help with the summer sun. And the state of my mind just made me want to sit here doing nothing, though I opened the cabin door to talk properly, sitting on the bed cross-legged.
02 Jul 2023, 5:30pm
'About time thank you. What will it take to get you off this ship? Hot? Outside?' *proceeds to check the weather forecast* 'it's 57°F (13C) outside and cloudy today. Just because it's summer doesn't mean it's hot.'

I understand Kira's hesitation and am attempting to get her off the ship.

'I don't know what system you are from nor what planet but Earth where we are currently has a relatively mild climate in comparison to the rest of the country.'

Melli rolls onto her back and kicks her feet around and gnaws at her boots in an attempt to remove them. I kneel down and remove the boots from her feet.

'There now don't get into too much trouble and have fun. Doesn't look like Kira will be joining you. Edi lock down the ship systems and prevent Kira from leaving her mental state is still not healthy. If you want to be a prisoner on your own ship so be it. I am however not leaving you with that thing.'

I point at her rifle and walk over to it. I pick it up and walk out of the room.

"Lockdown confirmed. Sorry Kira your safety is my greater concern here."
02 Jul 2023, 5:48pm
I watched Silvia walk off with her pet, feeling a mild sense of annoyance at her behavior. Something that I decided to make felt through a message, since I was now locked in here again.

So your idea of caring for me is to lock me into this room, alone? Fine. Not like anyone needs me anywhere. Only thing I could’ve been good at, someone else already can do, and better than me at that.

And I don’t have a clue about Earth weather, because the planet I knew was always stupid hot in summer, almost anywhere you went.

With nothing else to do, I just lay down on the bed and tried to fall asleep. If nothing else, I could at least try to be less tired, and hope that would bring back my hunger. Maybe Silvia would be back by the time I woke up again.
02 Jul 2023, 6:15pm
Hadn't even made it to the kitchen yet and Kira had sent a message. I read it over and proceeded to cook up breakfast. Just because Kira "wasn't hungry" didn't mean she wouldn't enjoy the offer. The meal consisted of hashbrowns, eggs, sausage, and some gravy.

I load my plate full and mix everything together adding some hotsauce. Thinking Kira may not be too fond of everything I put a small amount of food on a plate for her then carry it to her room. Seeing she was laying down, I leave the plate on the table covered up and place a note on it.

"Try to eat something then please join me out on the landing pad. It's beautiful outside and the fresh air will relax your mind."

I exit the ship and see Melli seemingly stalking a rabbit that had wandered into her vision. I sit down at the work bench near my brothers type 9 and eat my food.

'Silv what no food for the rest of us? Also that Cutter is not one of yours who's ship is it?'

'Shut up Jackson. You are perfectly capable of cooking up a meal for yourself. It belongs to a friend. Things are looking better.... well cleaner around here. When is framing going up?'
02 Jul 2023, 6:59pm
My nap lasted a grand total of thirty minutes, not doing anything to remove the sleepy feeling, but didn't make me feel any more tired either. I gave up eventually, after rolling around for a while longer, and turned my attention to the scent of food.

It originated from a plate nearby, so I got up and checked it out. Egg, some sausage and something I didn't recognize, but didn't look very appetizing. I barely felt hungry, already often eating little to nothing in morning times to start, but ate the egg anyway. Tried some of the sausage, only to put it away again quickly, already feeling my stomach rebel from just a very small quantity of food. I couldn't even tell what kind it was, only knowing I would've preferred bacon.

I still felt neither awake nor like I had energy, so I quickly dealt with some biological needs and brushed my teeth, then fell back on the bed again. It would likely take at least another hour or two, if not until the afternoon, for me to do anything else. I'd never liked having to be up in mornings since passing my childhood.
03 Jul 2023, 12:30am
Boredom ended up driving me outside the ship, once I realized 'lockdown' only meant no access to ship systems or controls, but also that I couldn't do anything interesting on it, since the sections where I could tinker on stuff were also locked off.

I ensured I hadn't forgotten to wear and pull up my hood, before I opened the door to the airlock, and stepped outside. My eyes took a moment to adjust to the bright sunlight, no thanks to the modifications made by the Thargoids that made them even more sensitive in low-light conditions, finding the air to be a little thin. The pad, once I could see properly, looked remarkably clean, with the exception of a few small pieces of rubble still around.

The view that presented itself once I looked ahead was that of a ruined mansion, quite evidently torn up by ship-based gunfire. I'd have to ask Silvia about that later, if she didn't tell me of her own accord, but my interest in it was limited at the moment - a ruined building wasn't what I was here for. And she was busy talking to someone anyway, so that was out of the question. I still didn't want to see any other people here, either.

I ignored the strange looks I was getting for my smooth-looking black suit, which would hardly be recognizable as a Dominator to the untrained eye, and the hood I wore, looking over my ship. The immaculate azure paintjob was doing its best to reflect the sunlight hitting it, though not quite as blinding as if it sported the default white from Gutamaya. A color I was never too fond of for the ship, so I'd gotten it changed soon after the initial purchase.

No one was bothering me, at least, likely in part due to my attire. I didn't particularly trust the people here, certainly not enough that I was willing to not wear that hood - Azimuth could, and likely did, have spies everywhere. Still feeling rather unsteady on my legs, even in the suit which supported my body, I decided to move to the edge of the platform, letting my legs dangle off once I sat down over there. At least here, the view out into the distance was better.

Little sunlight managed to reach my face, which I was grateful for, as I didn't trust it to hold up well against direct exposure, after many years behind the protective metals and glass of starports, ships and suits. I did somewhat appreciate the fresh air, helping me feel less exhausted, which the atmosphere within the ship didn't - even now, with the vents cycling the external air, the filters still gave it an artificial 'taste' or feeling. It was a little fresh for my preferences, but that would likely change later on in the day. I then began to write up a log entry on my wrist computer, in the absence of anything better to do than that, or taking in the view.

I chose to name it 'Frailty of Life/Hardness of Creation'.

I noticed Kira exit the ship and walk to the edge of the platform. As she approached and eventually sat down I relaxed realizing she wasn't going to jump off. Luckily it was only a small drop to the ground below about 15ft  but enough to cause damage if landing incorrectly. Melli who was taking a nap below notices Kira's feet and runs out from underneath. She rushes over the then end of the platform which met the ground on the opposite end Kira was sat and hops up. In a matter of seconds Melli closes the distance between the two and plops down on her back exposing her belly to Kira.

I watch the two and make my way over cautiously taking a seat near them. I look out over the mountain side view. A deep valley with a river winds through the forested rocky terrain of the protected mountain range. Large towering pine trees surround the area and the forest floor is littered with pine needles and lush green undergrowth.

'You know I used to sit out here every single day and just listen to the birds. Our 4 dogs, brother, sister and I would run around this whole area climbing the trees and rocks. Those ruins behind us used to be a once majestic mansion though it resembled a massive cabin more than anything at all.' *I let out a shallow sigh and continue* 'You look bored dear. Would you like something to do?'

Silvia Sharpe'You look bored dear. Would you like something to do?'

I finished typing up the log as Silvia finished talking, and replied.

"I always get bored when you lock off my ship so I can't do any of the stuff I like inside of it. If that was your plan to drive me out, congratulations. It worked exactly as intended."

I looked off into the distance again, for now ignoring the fluffy belly at my feet. It was either a trap for my hands - as I had often experienced with cats - or deliberately presented as a distraction to get some scratches.

"And what would I do here? Everyone's giving me strange looks for being in all black and a hood already. Don't need them double checking every corner for me sneaking around." I sighed, deciding to lean back to lay down, and let my weight be distributed across all my body, arms crossed on the chest. "What do you do when you don't have a purpose? I'm no use to Aegis when they already have someone with a better functioning implant, that they understand better, and the person who has it also knows how to use better?"

I sent her the log I just wrote without moving any part of my body - as I had found out, the biomechanical nodes throughout allowed a device on my wrist to detect the signals sent through them, and thus act through neural input alone, without physical use - to let her know some of my current thoughts, then asked about the ruin.

"What exactly happened? I know that damage. Someone came here and wrecked the place in a ship. Or two."

A piece of rubble lay close to my head, so I picked it up, and tossed it down into the valley, its fall echoing across it until it was too far to be heard.
03 Jul 2023, 2:50am
'One single ship did all of this..... this place never stood a chance even with the reinforced walls. Weapons designed to tear through a ships hull met no resistance against concrete and lumber.'

I flash of a memory from the attack rushes through my mind. The assault was over just as fast as it began. I pull a knee to my chest and rest my cheek on it a look of sadness washing across my face.

'The people who did this are the same ones who took me..... killed my best friend, Venus. No one here is thinking you are snooping around they are just confused by a woman in all black. Makes people nervous ya know.'

'Locking you out of your ship was to prevent you from running off. Besides this view is magnificent is it not? I haven't felt like I don't have a purpose at least not for a while. I was at my lowest point not that long ago. Hell I had just got out of the hospital after 2 weeks being in there after trying to end it all. I have lost so much but I never once felt like I didn't belong. That low point is where I found myself.'

I look back at the ruins watching the crew set up the concrete forms in preparation for the next week. Jackson overlooks the blue prints and approves the locations.

'You know Kasumi maybe you should remove yourself from Aegis and find your own path. Stop trying to follow in Seo's shadow.'

'You know Kasumi maybe you should remove yourself from Aegis and find your own path. Stop trying to follow in Seo's shadow.'

“That’s not what I was trying to do, but I just don’t know what I should do. The reason I’m out here is because we agreed that I am better off out here, instead of stuck in some guarded facility on a planet, while I still communicate back on whatever I find. Or something.”

I sighed, and sat upright again.

“Truth be told, I can’t say I’ve had any kind of purpose for a few years now. Sure, I was alive, but it didn’t feel like living. Even now, with everything I could want at my disposal and more money than I’ll ever need or spend, I feel like I’m still at that point where I started out years ago. What little I can remember of the time, anyway. No purpose, just lost in a world that I never knew, and which never was mine. Only thing I know I can tell you for sure, is that I’ll die before I let her fall into the hands of Azimuth again. Or let the Thargoids have their hands on her, for that matter.”

I looked around to make sure no one else was listening in.

“If they’re worried about someone wearing black, I’m not sure what to tell you. It’s the hood, because they can’t tell who I am at a glance.”
03 Jul 2023, 3:46am
'Everyone here is more focused on making money. They make give you strange looks but they are mostly simpletons. Especially that big oaf of a man walking around with the Blueprints. That man is a special kind of dull.'

I was talking about my brother and the tone in my voice showed I was just simply poking fun at him.

'Hmm I'm no use to these guys currently. Care to show me that rail-rifle of yours? I know a spot just down the hill that we can use. I've got some targets in the armory here we can use. Oh and I've got loads of unregistered stuff in there.'

There is a level of excitement in my voice as I talk about going down and shooting some stuff. Though I wished I had my rifle with me.

'Better to leave this work to the professionals and its better than sitting around staring at nothingness. It'll be fun.'

Melli gives up waiting for pets and runs off after another rabbit that caught her attention. It was good to see her enjoying herself in an environment better suited to her life.

'Better to leave this work to the professionals and its better than sitting around staring at nothingness. It'll be fun.'

I watched a streak of white and other fluff run away from a chance of pets, in favor of hunting something in the grass, then replied to Silvia.

“If you say so. But I need ammo and it’s in my ship’s armory. Two types, you’ll recognize the mags when you see them.”

My tone was dull and rather unexcited. I didn’t particularly feel like I wanted to do that, still more interested in just doing nothing. My energy levels had only barely sufficed to move to the edge of the pad and sit down on it, already.

I didn’t feel very safe either - even though I’d insisted on delaying departure until the Cutter had its weapons and more shield boosters installed, with an allowance made to fit an available beam laser from my carrier. Something just didn’t feel right. The scenery was too idyllic and peaceful, and I kept expecting the sky to come crashing down on our heads.

Maybe it was just my mental state affecting my view of things too negatively. Or the way my stomach rebelled against the small amount of food in it. I decided to sit on those thoughts and waited for Silvia’s reaction, keeping a side eye on her pet going wild in the tall grass.

'OK well what the heck would you like to do? If nothing interests you nothing we do will help get your mind focusing in the good.'

I drop my tone down eventhough the closest person was on the opposite side of the landing pad and speak to Kira.

'Kira you are safe here. Not a single soul here is going to do anything. I know all of them. My brother and his crew have been together since the beginning. I requested his team to be here because I too can't trust anyone. I don't yet know who tried to take Melli and possibly kill me for the chip in my head. I do know that my brother would never let anything happen.'

'You tell me what actually sounds like fun and we will do it together.'

'You tell me what actually sounds like fun and we will do it together.'

“You’re asking the person that wants to do nothing more than just… do nothing and lie in the same spot. I’m so tired.”

I couldn’t think of anything better to respond, and tossed a rock down the side of the mountain, listening to the clanging it made as it hit other rocks and the ground on its way down. I derived a mild, child-like enjoyment out of the action.

“What if the guys who tried to get that little bundle of craziness - “ I gestured to where only the movement of tall grass gave away Melli’s presence, vividly searching for something in there. “ - are the same ones that wrecked the house? It wouldn’t surprise me …”

I looked off into the distance, to some dark, ominous looking clouds, more or less at the same time as lightning lit the formation up. Thunder followed roughly ten seconds later.

“Just over three kilometers away. You know what I’d find fun? Not getting wet in that storm.”, I remarked to the show, pointing toward the thunderstorm cloud, while keeping an eye out for more lightning.

It was at least a welcome distraction from the conversation, and I always did like to observe those types of weather phenomenons. It didn’t look like it was headed our way, though.
