Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"I'll have a roast beef sandwich and sparkling mineral water, please."

Desdar sees the lady off after she distributed their orders.

"Not today. But when you do, you don't have to sugarcoat it on my behalf." he agrees with a smile. "Enjoy your meal!"
05 May 2023, 3:43pm
Silvia arrives with her entourage as Desdar and Jules are eating.

'So ya that's why I haven't been around as much. Felix I do hope Ali understands. Oh looks like this is me. Thank you guys. I appreciate it. This was a nice chat.'

'Sure thing Silvia. Take care of yourself.'

The security personnel depart and Silvia turns around. She drops her bags when she sees Jules laying in the bed bruised and bandaged up. Jules stops just before taking another bite of her sandwhich. Jules attempts to play off the situation as best she can.

'Uh..... hey Silv....... it's not as bad as it looks I promise.'

'Not as bad as it looks?!? Where the hell is your leg? Julia what the hell did you do?!' Silvia turns to Desdar an exasterbated look on her face. She holds her hands out in a questioning manor. 'What the hell?'

Jules places her sandwich down and interrupts Silvia before she has a chance to berate Desdar for a lack of action.

'OK. OK. It is that bad.... look*sigh* There was an ambush at the landing zone. Pit Viper became a mini nova and a chunk of her hull took my leg.' She motions to Desdar and continues. 'If it hadn't been for Desdar and O'Donnell, we wouldn't even be having this conversation. You should be thanking him instead of chastising him.'

An angered look grows on Silvia's typically warm and welcoming face. As she turns to face Jules, her eyes turn to rage.

'You promised! You promised me you'd be safe! How dare you! I already lost one I don't need to lose you too! Gah! Jules what the hell! I have half a mind to take your other leg myself!'

Silvia storms out of the room slamming the door as she leaves. She leans against the wall and slides down into a sitting position and begins to cry.

Jules watches Silvia storm out and looks to Desdar once the door slams shut.

'That's about how I expected that to go.....'
05 May 2023, 4:47pm
"That was quite the unexpected typhoon." Desdar's eyebrows can be seen above the rims of his sunglasses. "You ok?"

Desdar gives Jules the room to calm down, while he finishes his meal and wraps up his waste.

Desdar smiles and stands up, "Should you need a ship I can offer one, if you want it." His face scrunches up a little as he tries to remember. "The doctors wanted to know whether you wanted a progenitor clone graft or cybernetics but I couldn't answer for you."
He walks over to Jules and puts his hand on her shoulder.
"For now take it easy and relax, we'll do a debrief once you recovered."

"I'll see how Silvia is faring, it wasn't easy for her either." Desdar walks over to the door "You need something let me know ok?"

He quietly leaves the room closing the door without sound. Seeing Silvia crouching next to the door, he quickly and quietly goes to buy some water, and when he comes back he sits on the hard bench opposite the door and waits.

Jules shocked expression fades as Desdar offer friendly help later on. She watches as he leaves and lays her head against the bed and falls asleep.

Outside the room Silvia watches Desdar exit and return with a water. The anger she was previously expressing has been replaced with fear and despair. The thought of losing someone she has rapidly began falling for soo close to losing her wife is unbearable for her to think about.

'Sorry Desdar. You don't deserve to be on the receiving end. It's just she has become very important to me these last couple months.'

She leans her head back against the wall and sniffles.

'Damn it. Tell me it was at least worth the damned risk.'

Desdar holds the water bottle out to Silvia, together with a pack of tissues. When he speaks his voice is calm and warm.

"Apology accepted, but I don't think it's me you should be apologizing to."

His next words sound strict and somewhat harsh: "Yes, because we decided the risk was worth it when we started, regardless of the outcome." His opinion seems to be immutable.

All harshness and edge leave his voice as it returns to the warm and calm tone from before.
"We missed our goal, but the consolation price could turn out to be invaluable. We managed to extract the memory core of the Krait that ambushed us."

For a few seconds, he stares at the wall over Silvia's head.

"There is a lot of data, most messages are encrypted, but there is a lot of jump data that look promising. It could be worth trying to decode the messages if we at least knew the algorithm."

"In the end, you need to decide whether it was worth it. My opinion you know."

Desdar stands up and holds out his hand to help Silvia stand up.

"I'll be going back to the ship, to help O'Donnell to compile, collate, and analyze the data. We should have a good picture in a day or two we'll let you know."

Desdar takes Silvia by the shoulders and gently but firmly turns her towards Jules' room door.

"Whom Jules needs right now isn't a half stranger. But try to not get angry and try not to talk about the bad things that happened. We'll have a proper debrief of what happened when we have the analysis done. Talk about nice things past, present, and future!

Should the two of you need anything then let me know, ok?"

Silvia watches Desdar walk away towards the docks for his ship. As he rounds the corner Silvia enters the room quietly opening the door. She see Jules sleeping and decides to let her rest for now.

Taking a seat on a chair in the room Silvia begins looking for a nanosurgeon to help her remove the chunk of glass and metal in her face. She finds one operating out of Jameson hospital accepting walk ins. Silvia exits Jules' room quietly and walks to the nurses station nearby.

'Hey can you point me in the direction of Dr. Lambert? I have something I'd like taken care of.'

The nurse obliges happily and gives Silvia directions to the on site clinic. Silvia asks the nurse to let Jules know where she was at if she didn't return before Jules woke up.

Back on the ship, Desdar and O'Donnell work through the data of the memory core. It's tedious work, and they are careful to recompile the files before transferring them.
The pilot was easy to identify: Dina Artigas.

Categorizing the data takes some more time, luckily some of the analysis can be automated.

<They are here. What would you have me do?

Dispose of them.>

"Swatch, she had contacts at Gardner Point."

"Still, not the connection we need to follow Diaz."

...

The next day, a name pops out of the data, James Elias. Ostensibly a dock worker on Citi Gateway he hired Artigas for a three-part hitjob.

<I found you some paying target practice.
There's a pretentious snob, a nobility whore, and a cripple that need shooting. We spotted the snob flying around in 69 G. Carinae but we're guessing that the rest will follow, so coordinate with the guys in Gardner Point.

Jules wakes up and notices Silvia laying in the bed with her. The sight of her laying there reminds her of when she stayed next to Silvia for days after the rescue. She moves over slightly allowing Silvia to have a bit more room and not be crammed against the bed rail. Silvia stirs awake at the movement and opens a sleepy eye.

Jules brushes the hair out of Silvia's face and sees the wound from the escape pod incident is mostly healed and only a faint scar can be seen.

'You found a nanosurgeon?'

Silvia smiles and nods her head. She pushes herself upright and in a gentle tone tries to reconcile her actions from the previous day.

'Jules look..... I'm sorry about yesterday. I was scared and upset. I know it's no excuse. Just please be more careful.'

Jules smiles and nods accepting the apology. The lead surgeon returns to the room.

'Miss Cavanaugh I need to know which route you want to take for your leg. Progenitor clone....'

Jules cuts the surgeon off before he even has a chance to finish the question. Her hasty answer takes him by total surprise.

'Cybernetics. I don't like the thought of a cloned leg. Seems creepy. At least cybernetics are able to be modified.'

'Oh well... I shall get things prepared.'

The surgeon acknowledges the request and heads out to prep. Jules looks to Silvia and places her hands on hers.

'You should go to Desdar and figure out if they have found anything.'

Silvia nods and crawls out of the bed. She grabs her bags off the floor and steps out of the room looking back and waving goodbye to Jules. She pulls out her tablet and messages Desdar.

"Find anything yet? Would be nice to have a lead. Jules is going to be prepped for surgery soon. Let me know the pad you are on I'll come to you unless you want to meet up for a bite to eat. I know a pretty good spot."

Before getting out of bed Desdar answers Silvia's message.
<I'd prefer to talk business in private. You can find my ship on pad 02.

We can order food to ship or go eat afterward.
Give Jules my best regards for a speedy recovery.>

After quickly showering and dressing Desdar sits down in the living room with a strong coffee, waiting for Silvia.
06 May 2023, 6:48pm
"Pad 02? Oh right Cutter. OK I'll meet you there."

Silvia begins making her way to the landing pad. She makes a brief stop at her residence and grabs some new clothes and exchanges her armor for a new set. It takes her a short while to make her way to the docks. She arrives at pad 02 and the ships AI alerts Desdar to her arrival.

She stands patiently at the bottom of the boarding ramp waiting for Desdar or O'Donnell to welcome her.
06 May 2023, 8:53pm
It doesn't take 15 seconds for Desdar to open the lock, and come down the stairs to greet Silvia.
"Hello, come o n in." As Desdar looks around to ship, his voice seems to shortly catch.

"O'Donnell will be joining us shortly." Desdar informs Silvia as he leads her into a rather large room. One half is filled with a large table able easily to seat 12 people, with a mahagoni top, inlet with a family crest, on the other side stand three sofas and a low coffee table between them. "Have a seat, do you want something to drink?"

He joins Silva with her drink and a large cup of coffee.

After several minutes O'Donnell enters the room yawning, not even trying to hide it.

'One thing I like about Gutamaya is they know how to make an impressive ship. I was in awe of Venus' cutter when she got hers. Only thing I truly enjoyed from the empire.'

Silvia takes the cup of coffee and sips it, the warmth filling her. She watches O'Donnell walk through the door yawning. A smile forms on her face as the memory of Venus doing the same thing washes through her head.

'So what'd you find? Hopefully something fruitful.'
07 May 2023, 9:05am
"Nay, thaur's a hundert reas'ns for liking the Empire better than that." grumbles O'Donnell as she sits down.

Desdar shows Silvia pictures of Dina and Elias. "Do you know any of them?"

He then gives her his datapad so she can read the message Elias wrote:
Desdar Elrius

Desdar looks at Silvia. "I apologize for being the catalyst that led to the ambush. Had I been careful, it needed have happened."

"Nay, I checked the log and vids. Thaur isn't anything we coulda done differently. .... .... " her last words are unintelligibly quiet, her face showing a somewhat complicated expression.

He takes a breath before continuing.

"We think that Dina's a just a hitman hired by James Elias.
Elias though, he's working undercover in Citi Gateway, ostensibly a dockworker. We found some evidence that he is coordinating attacks on refugee ships passing through Citi."

Sivlia takes a long look at both photos. Neither of them seems to bare any resemblance to anyone she has heard of. She hands the datapad back to Desdar while shaking her head.

'I can't say that I know either of them. The name Elias.' She closes her eyes briefly trying to figure out something. 'I bet Julia knows who he is. Too bad she is more than likely in surgery right now.'

Taking another sip of her coffee she turns to O'Donnell.

'How should we go about this? It won't be simple locating a target on a a busy station.'
07 May 2023, 9:57pm
" I hae an idea. Officially he's warking on the docks. Mayhaps we canna get him interested in the ship.
I bet that if ye ask, " O'Donnell looks at Desdar " ye could order for his crew to come."

"If he's properly registered we can get his local address but that is unlikely. Since he probably isn't, we won't find his name in the roster too."

Desdar shows the bounty Elias has accumulated.

"I don't mind to try and see if he'll get assigned to working on the ship, she needs a new coat of paint anyways.
Another option is to hang around the bars and ask around and see what comes up, but that could be glacially slow.
Lastly, just walk around the docks and hope to get lucky. " Desdar shrugs on the last one.

Suddenly O'Donnell snaps her fingers. "We canna send him a message, and set up a meeting and ambush him, we do hae a message address."

O'Donnell brings up the metadata of the message they recovered.

Desdar has a sour look on his face. "I guess we can try ..." He looks over to Silvia. "What do you think about our options?"
