Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Jazzmaster Funky Gee, are you and your crew medically fit? Will you be able to wait for an emergency rescue vessel from Colonia? Jazzmaster Funky Gee, please respond"

Silas waited a few seconds, but surprisingly, Lamb didn't seem to be picking up on the coded message.

"OK... I'm going to respond. Are we medically fit? Or did one of our crewmates suffer an electrical accident while performing thruster maintenance that we are unequipped to treat?" Silas said, looking over at Maul as he retrieved an electric stun-gun from his belt and gave the button a tap, causing it to arc and buzz menacingly for a second.
05 Apr 2022, 4:58pm
Maul audibly gulped as he stared down at the stun-gun.

"I...okay...listen...if we're doing this, don't do that shit where you count down from 3. I hate it and nobody ever gets to three anyway." Maul sighed and shook his head as he tried to focus on anything other than the stun-gun.

"Right...so...I'm just gonna turn my back for a minute and read this warning label over here." Maul stepped away from the captains seat and began reading aloud a warning label about the dangers of exposed wires in the cockpit.

Lambast Mercy"Jazzmaster Funky Gee, are you and your crew medically fit? Will you be able to wait for an emergency rescue vessel from Colonia? Jazzmaster Funky Gee, please respond"

Silas opened comms and then stood to walk over to Maul.

"We read you, Lambaconda Twenty Two, and respond with a negative. This is First Mate CMDR Beardy, The Jazzmaster has suffered an... um... "

Silas reaches forward and zaps Maul in the neck with the stun gun. The man immediately begins convulsing. Absent gravity, he reminded Silas of one of those wacky waving arm-flailing inflatable tube men that they use for advertising planetside.

"...uh, yeah, an electrical injury while servicing the thrusters that we are unequipped to address." He allowed himself a half smirk, knowing Maul would be fine in a few minutes.

"I'm not sure the extent of the damage, I think we're OK, but I wanted to see to the medical issues before booting up the engines."
06 Apr 2022, 6:22pm
That was Silas on the coms. Lamb sat up straight and checked her hair and make up in a reflective surface. He was her best friend's partner, but it wouldn't do any harm to look nice when she saw him again. Using the most nonchalant tone she could summon, Lamb responded.

"Received commander Beardy. I will commence docking manoeuvrers now" she said as if being 'chlant' never been a part of her life.

While moving the bulky Conda under Mauls' slender Krait, the hidden message in the static started to make more sense.

"Please prepare Commander Zee for my arrival and have any medical equipment you may have on hand and ready" she said to fill time while she tried to work out why she was in danger.

Maul may come out here on a whim, but not Silas. If Maul was in trouble around the bubble, Silas Kaisla, Echo and Raven would deal with it. They wouldn't come out here to fetch Lamb. Maul must have been stalking the companies computers again, and found someone on board that was very dangerous. Someone that would not respect the deal Lambs' company had going with the Cartel.

There had been no trouble so far, but Lamb trusted Maul and Silas without question. The Seekers were, in Lambs opinion, a waste of genetics. They had all let some admittedly interesting and charismatic huckster fool them into believing a load of spiritual nonsense. They were willing slaves and no use to the rest of the human race. If they inter feared with Maul and Silas coming on board, It would be no loss if they all suffered from sudden decompression and fell into space.

"Lambaconda Twenty Two to Ghoul. I am in position.."

Lamb isolated the doors she would be using, and candled the safety protocols on the airlocks.

"..and extending the umbilical."

She then linked the 'open' command for every door on the ship to the inner airlock doors and okayed the warning message that came up.

"Please stand by to equalize pressure in ten. Nine.."

Next, she disabled the countdown and verbal warning when opening the airlocks and tied the command and door controls to her wrist computer.
07 Apr 2022, 11:23am
The commands listed on Dorns' screen as the captain changed the all door and airlock operations. It was unreal, he felt like he was watching a warden sing the death warrant of all the prisoners, including himself. She hadn't activated the command, but all she had to do was press a key on her wrist computer. He blocked the command and warned Napoleon.

"She was preparing to space us, all of us. Just like that"

"I get it Dorn. You have control, don't let her do anything, we are going to stop her now. Standby"

Napoleon looked back at the two pilots, they looked odd without their red Seekers robes. Their pilots’ flight suits singled them out, something the High Seeker had worked hard to eradicate. Still, they were not part of the inner circle and civilians, so they may panic if he and his men killed the captain in front of them. Turning back to his guardian seekers, Napoleon issued his orders quietly.

"You, take some men to the other ship including a medic and search it. Once you know who is on board, kill them all. Leave some men at the hatch too"

As some of his troops left, the captain came out of the cockpit, concentrating on a little mirror in her hand as she refreshed her makeup. She didn't even see Napoleons' fist coming. The first blow stunned the woman, but Napoleon took hold of her collar and landed two more punches.

"Take her away" he said, pushing the limp woman in to a pair of his subordinates. "Get in there and take control of this ship, please seekers" said Napoleon softly as he walked past the two pilots.

He was looking forward to getting the captain alone in an air lock. She was going to regret every short remark and condescending... a commotion behind him cause Napoleon to spin around.

His men were holding the captains’ jacket, and the two pilots were gripping their necks, choking and crying out in shock. Blood was streaked on the walls and ceiling, floating weightless in the air. A red splash stained the captains’ snow-white hair and one of her eyes. She was standing between the two dying seekers, looking very pleased with herself as her hands raised in surrender, letting a short narrow sword drift away.

Napoleon covered the distance in one weightless bound, grabbed the captains’ neck and slammed her into the wall, pushing the barrel of his gun deep into her stomach.

Stretching her chin, trying to get a breath, Lamb forced some words out. If she didn't make her case quickly, this man would kill her. That would be endlessly embarrassing in front of Silas and Maul.

"You need a good pilot, yours are dead" she croaked, looking calmly into the tall man's eyes.

She was trying to force his fingers open, or buckle his arm, but this lanky man from Sothis was deceptively strong. One of the pilots, a woman by the sound she made, choked and a spout of blood sprayed across Napoleons back as she rotated in the air.

"Well, dying" said Lamb correcting her self.

Lambast Mercy"Please stand by to equalize pressure in ten. Nine.."

Silas heard the familiar clunks and hisses as the umbilical connected and pressurized.

"Alright, go time buddy..." he trailed off, seeing that Maul was drooling a little as he was recovering from the jolt.

"Uh... you're good... be right back" he said, patting Maul's shoulder as he moved past.

Silas hurried toward the cargo bay, and made his way to the 'escape pod', typing in the new code he had set.
The pod hissed open, revealing a pile of combat gear and whiskey, topped with a sticky note which contained a nearly identical drawing to that on Maul's 'DilDOOM' device, which definitely appeared since the code had been changed.

Silas snatched it off and stuck it in his pocket with a chuckle, removed his jacket and stuffed it into the pod so it wouldn't float away.
He grabbed an armor vest from the pod and put it on. It had pouches with extra ammo and charges for the underbarrel emp on his carbine, which he also grabbed and slung before replacing his jacket over it. He then function checked his sidearm as was his habit, re holstered it, and grabbed a kinetic SMG and an extra vest for Maul and turned halfway around before stopping. He reached back and grabbed one of the bottles of Old Sol as well, tucked the extra vest up under his arm, and pushed the 'close pod' button with the SMG barrel before hurrying back to the bridge.

Arriving at the door to the bridge, he noticed it had closed. Not normally weird, but he had sworn he'd left it open as he'd been in a hurry to get back before the welcoming party arrived.

He poked the bridge door code into the keypad with the SMG barrel and hit enter.

Seeker Fullex contacted Napoleon while he injected the recumbent Green haired man with a concoction that should calm his jolted system and let him regain control of his faculties.

“Guardian Napoleon, there is an injured man, and it does look like he was electrocuted. He is the only person here. He does have a beard, but I can’t imagine he was capable of using the communicator.

“Good Seeker Fullex, chances are it's not a raider trap. Now, let Guardian Soak ensure he will not pose a threat should you revive him”

The Seeker pulled up his red hood, so Guardian Seeker Soak couldn’t see his face. Fulllex hadn’t been pleased when Napoleon had given him an escort. Soak was a big guy that looked like an angry wall in with his robes draped over his armoured pressure suit. Fullex couldn’t see a weapon in the Guardian's hands, as his arms were crossed within his robes, but he gave the impression of a man that was always fondling a cleaver.

The man he was sent to treat was starting to uncross his eyes and quit his involuntary twitching. The treatment he was supposed to hold off on, was one simple injection, and he’d administered it. Why would one of the Seeker's few medical practitioners be sent over to the ship if he was not to practice his skills?

“Um Guardian Soak, Guardian Napoleon says you ah, umm, are to question the blind one”

The big man was turning his head like a lighthouse, taking in the details of the cockpit. He robotically crouched down resting his elbows on his knees looking deep in to the man's eyes as he started to focus.
12 Apr 2022, 5:46pm
Maul's cybernetic eyes began to stabilize as his surroundings slowly started to become clear. He could feel he was floating just inches from the floor of the cockpit and could see that something large was next to him. Maul started to reach out and touch the large blob when suddenly it became very clear that the blob he was reaching for was actually a large robed man.

"The fuck?" said Maul as he quickly retraced his hand.

He began to fumble around in an attempt to lock his magboots back onto the floor. The large man stood up straight, his eyes locked on Maul the entire time

Maul finally got to his feet and looked around the cockpit for Silas but most of his vision was taken up by Soak. He bounced a glance between the two cult members a few times before speaking.

"So...you guys....are the rescue team?"

Maul was confused and unarmed and Silas was nowhere to be found yet. Had they captured him while he was out?
12 Apr 2022, 6:33pm
Without taking his eyes off the erstwhile patient, Soak spoke to Fullex.

"Go into the pilots' cabin there, Seeker. I need to talk with the Funkmaster"

Fullex gladly left, being around any of the Guardians was unwelcome, but Soak and Napoleon especially.

"So" continued Soak once the cabin door had shut again "You don't look very funky for a funk master. What's happened to your friend Beardy?"
13 Apr 2022, 5:27pm
Maul looked at Soak for a moment and relaxed his shoulders as he fell into character.

"Ah, you mean Dj Beardy? My man with the brains, the brawn, the beard?!" Maul extruded a fake laugh.

"That cool cat must be around here somewhere. Ya see, we're out here working on our next extension of the soul; or for those who are less enthused about the wonders of music or funk in particular, would call it, our next 'album'. We're out here just tryna soak in the vibes of the galaxy and transmogrify those vibes into the funkiest, the freshest, the absolute bestest music to hit the bubble, ya dig?"

Maul took a step back and crossed his arms as he leaned on the console behind him.

"A Quantum Zeropoint of Funk." Maul said with nervous smile, hoping that this would buy him some time until for either Silas to return of for him to conjure up an actual next move.

"Pretty fresh, huh?"

13 Apr 2022, 5:50pm
Guardian Soak hadn't been in any situations where raiders were trying to board the craft he was tasked with protecting; in fact, this was the first time he'd been on a flight that wasn't to the local stations and back. This guy casually leaning on a consol wasn't the sort of bloodthirsty pirate he imagined having to fight, but he had his orders to kill everyone on board.

The rest of his men were searching the ship, and the Seeker he had brought with was out of the way, but before Soak had fun, he had to learn how many pirates were on board. Unfortunately, his brain wasn't a muscle, so flexing it didn't help him come up with a non-threatening method of interrogation.

"If you're making an album, where's your band Funkmaster?"

His slow, deliberate voice and unblinking eyes quested for an answer while the rest of him loomed. Soak was almost as good at looming as he was at hitting people hard without braking the skin.
13 Apr 2022, 7:05pm
Maul grinned. The man's questions just meant more time that he was wasting.

"It's just Beardy and I out here looking for those sweet succulent vibes, my brother! We're in the writing process as of now and having just the two of us out here helps with keeping the waves fresh and untainted by too many mixed vibes, ya dig?"

"Like..." Maul stepped towards Soak and continued. "...it only takes one bad apple to spoil the bunch and we're looking for the freshest of apples."

Maul was beginning to confuse himself at this point. Nonsense was pouring out of his mouth.

"Say pal, what's your name? You deserve a little recognition for saving us out here. We'd gladly incorporate your name into a funky song title.

"What the fuck am I doing?" Maul thought to himself. These guys were dangerous and it felt like they were just playing with their food at this point.
13 Apr 2022, 7:45pm
This brought a grin to Soak's face, obscured as it was by his helmet. Two squishy musicians? And here he came prepared for an actual challenge.

He clenched the fist of his gloved hand.

"A funky song title? Say... I have a few new grooves for you, Funkmaster. They'll be stuck in your HEAD!"
On the word head, he leveled Maul with a wicked punch to the forehead.

"Guardian Soak!"

Fullex had emerged from the the pilot's cabin. Though he couldn't see Soak's face, the way the helmeted head turned to look at him was quite menacing. Fullex was unnerved, but continued.

"Wh... I thought we were supposed to render aid?"

"I'm giving the Funkmaster some new material. Stay in your lane unless you intend to join the band."

Fullex froze, unsure how to react.

Soak turned his attention back to Maul, who was still reeling from the first hit.

"Do you know the first component of a hit song, Funkmaster? A good HOOK!" he shouted, landing a left hook to Maul's abdomen, causing him to double over.
13 Apr 2022, 7:45pm
The door opened to a scene Silas had not at all expected. Two red robed men, one smaller with his back to Silas, the other huge and, although wearing a pressure suit, his posture was very intimidating. The men didn't seem to hear the bridge door open.

Maul looked dazed.

Orwell Vandeman"Do you know the first component of a hit song, Funkmaster? A good HOOK!" he shouted, landing a left hook to Maul's abdomen, causing him to double over.

"Oh, fuck!" Silas involuntarily exclaimed.

The smaller man twisted his waist to look at Silas. The large man in the pressure suit merely turned his head, staying quartered aggressively toward Maul.

"I mean, uh..." Silas evaluated his options. He had his hands full of gear but he was holding an SMG.

"...don't forget the chorus!" he shouted, raising his right hand and pulling the SMG trigger.

His accuracy wasn't amazing, given that he was using one hand. He unloaded the magazine.

Fullex, standing closest to Silas, got rinsed and floated limp, stuck to the floor by his boots. Several rounds hit Soak's suit and richocheted. He didn't flinch. A few strays hit the counter between Maul's legs, one even striking his mag boot and bouncing away into the wall.

Silas left the SMG to float, pushed the vests under his arm away from him, and carefully tucked the whiskey bottle into a wiring harness on the wall, before leveling his carbine at Soak.

"Step back, Fleischberg!" he shouted.
