Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

I pulled myself free of Meowers’ hand and spun around.

“What?”, I bluntly asked, already at the end of my patience for the whole situation. There was air to transmit my voice, so no point in turning comms back on.
07 Sep 2023, 7:58pm
Meowers"What's this... Ah, nevermind. Can you give me the status of one particular hangar? Fer-de-Lance, ident AX313M, named 'Marshmallow'", I spoke to the AI core having little to no idea what this thing is and what it's capable of. A general concept of giving an access to my ship to some kind of weird computer didn't feel exactly comfortable, however, perhaps this was the only option. But I hoped it wasn't.

'Certainly. One moment please.'

A brief pause then the core lights up again.

'I am pleased to announce your ship Marshmallow is in fully functional order. Hangar appears intact. No issues have been found. Two hangars over or we can take Jules' ship which is closer.'

Another brief pause.

'Don't worry I will not need access to anything other than basic flight controls. I do not care much for anything outside getting the ones who rescued me off this soon to be star.'

Kasumi Goto“Take that stupid thing. If it wants to bitch at me like that for refusing to leave my ship behind, someone else can deal with it.”

'No I only meant.....'

The comms cut out before June has a chance to explain herself.

'I only meant your chances of success are next to none. At least not without serious injury.'

"Override protocol completed"

The announcement plays over the intercoms and June calls over to Kira.

'You never gave me a chance to explain. If you go through with this the likelihood you see the one you called EDI is slim to none. I do understand but situations change. Is this ship really worth you losing your life over? You can buy a new ship. You can't buy a new you.'

June cuts off control to the intercom system and the blue glow turns a yellow color.

'Hmm it appears my cores power is getting low. We must hurry. I will follow your lead.'

"Good," I reacted to the synthetic AI voice informing me of the hangar status. "Computer... thing. Can you activate that Pit Viper of yours remotely and get it out of here?"

"So," I turned my eyes to Kasumi, "Walking all the way down to your hangar is a death sentence. You know this. I suggest you come with me. Flying there on a ship will take seconds, not the minutes we don't have. Then, you'll have that safety cord and me, and Marshmallow, hanging around in case of things getting... even more messy than they already are."
07 Sep 2023, 8:17pm
I rolled my eyes in my helmet, accompanied by an identical motion from my head.

“Ugh. Fine. Whatever. But if that AI decides to fly off from the carrier while I’m still onboard, I’m going to kill someone.”

I really didn’t feel like asking for any help, nor did I want it, and yet people kept throwing it at me. So I just waited for Meowers to guide me to the correct hangar. June’s explanation went by heard, but unanswered to.

There were irreplaceable things on that ship I had no intention of letting go of. A fact that, from my perspective, should have been obvious.

"Nah," I shook my head, "That AI isn't going to fly anything but 'its' ship. And I'd really like it to be remotely operable, open for connection or whatsoever. I will plug the AI to power, but isolated from Marshmallow's systems, so it can drive the Viper away from here and stop it at the safe distance. Meanwhile, I'll take us to your ship's hangar and will wait for you to finish. Then... Then I'll fly to that Viper and install the AI. Hoping it won't set it to jump immediately."

"If it were about me and Marshmallow, I'd reacted the same way."
07 Sep 2023, 8:38pm
"Yeah whatever, let's just go. I want to be far away from this fucking place."

An announcement followed me finishing my sentence.

"Warning. Five minutes to core meltdown."
07 Sep 2023, 8:57pm
'Keep treating me as if I'm a danger and I'll ensure you are correct. I only mean to help, yet you chastise me for caring. Or is that beyond your scope of understanding? Also Pit Viper is and Imperial Eagle not a Viper.'

The annoyance at being treated like a threat was very clear in June's voice. The AI had no intentions of being a threat and only meant to help protect everyone. AI was always looked at with scrutiny and viewed as evil in the eyes of many so it was no surprise to June that these two individuals thought the same.

'Why am I not allowed to leave this system on my own? Someone will need to explain that to me. I just want to find a place away from here to truly register that my friend is dead. I... it's no wonder Jules did to you what she did. You are hateful and spiteful. You do not care about me. You see me as a tool just like he did. I will not help you further.'

June's tone become dismissive and a sense of feeling betrayed is lingering in her words.
07 Sep 2023, 9:00pm
"So, computer. Can you set your Viper... Eagle to take-off remotely? Initiate the launch and then fly it to safe distance. Or just initiate the launch and I'll push it away later", I spoke to AI as we approached Marshmallow. Low humming of engines put on standby was still audible in the thin air, and it was a good sign. I reached the airlock and entered the access code. "Then I'll install you on that ship, once we're safe. And you'll be free to leave this system on your own and never see us again."

"Kasumi, there are two safety cords near the main airlock, for all that EVA stuff. One hundred metres each. Tell me the number of your landing pad and attach yourself to one of those. We'll be there in a minute. Once safely inside, just detach it and press the button on the clasp, it will roll back nicely."
07 Sep 2023, 9:06pm
“Excuse me?”

I stopped and stared at the AI core.

“If I thought you’re just some dumb tool, I’d have left you to rot in that stupid room Diaz was keeping you trapped in. You’re free to go wherever the fuck you care to go, but I don’t want you to just take control of her ship and fly off with it while we’re both onboard, and I want mine back. What you do with yours, that’s entirely what you decide. As long as it doesn’t have any negative effect on us.”

I took a long breath.

“I have things on that ship that are not replaceable, and other memories associated to it. I’d put a bullet through my head before I’d leave them behind, but you’re apparently more interested in saving yourself, than to let me save what is important to me. And if you think I don’t give a shit about AI, contact EDI and see what she tells you. If she decides to accept an external connection from another. And no, her core is not on that ship.”

That was all I had to say on the subject. I began to walk again, just more annoyed and frustrated.
07 Sep 2023, 9:12pm
'My name is June.'

That is the last response she has to either of the women and simply remotely operates Pit Viper to leave the Carrier and outside of communications range. The core goes silent as June locks herself away from everyone.

An explosion from the rear of the ship tears one of the main drives clean off the ship lurching the massive carrier. Then a warning from the emergency broadcast system.

"WARNING Orbital telemetry lost. Orbit degraded."
07 Sep 2023, 9:20pm
"There," I opened the outer airlock door and motioned to the panel on the wall. "The cords are here. Attach one to your belt and close the inner door, keep the comms with me and hang on tightly. Observe and tell me where to go."

I ran to the cockpit, put the rifle back into the clamps on the back of the pilot seat and activated the systems. Removing the AI core from the pocket, I located a single port that looked like a standardised input-output interface, and connected the core to the isolated backup power circuit. Then, I dropped myself on the seat.

"Checking the comms. Kasumi, do you copy?"
07 Sep 2023, 9:31pm
“If by copy, you mean that I’m going to hang on for dear life with my ass out in the breeze, sure.”, I replied, once I attached to the ship and hid away in the airlock as best I could.

“Just follow the coordinates… well, the waypoint that’s going to show up in your messages in a second. And that AI was lucky you had its core. I’d have felt tempted to just slam it into a wall. Who does she think she is, being just as judgemental as the people that she accuses of being judgemental? If I hated AI, I’d have deleted that dumb construct on the spot instead of trying to save it.”

I sealed off my suit and prepared for what I was about to do. Some would have called it suicidal, and maybe it was, but I was enough of an idiot to merely consider it unfavorable odds, that I survived a few too many times in the past already.
07 Sep 2023, 9:59pm
"Oh, don't be so worried about that arse, I'll be gentle," I chuckled, although the distant, yet still audible through the thick armour, sound of air hissing away had made me scowl a little. The elevator moved Marshmallow to the depressurised zone first, and then, finally, up to the flight deck, and all I could think of was 'please, don't get stuck'. It didn't. However, those jerks, stutters and vibrations did a great job of making me squeeze the sticks anxiously.

I disengaged the landing gear and turned smoothly towards the waypoint, controlling the acceleration and using yaw rather than roll to turn, as if I wasn't flying in three-dimensional space but driving over a carrier's deck.

Everything is relative. An old truth. One fly on a pile of shit is okay, one fly in your lunch is already too much. Fifty metres per second is far even from being 'slow' when it comes to spacecraft, but it's several times faster than walking.

Reaching the waypoint, I decelerated to a stall, keeping Marsmallow in mere centimetres above the carrier deck.

"That should do it. Do you see any breaches?"
07 Sep 2023, 10:56pm
“Yeah, I’d say the hangar doors that are stuck about five meters apart would do it.”, I replied with a dry tone. “Going out now.”

The waypoint had brought us right above the hangar of my Corvette. I bent down and held a hand to the edge of the airlock, pushing downward to get the necessary momentum to reach the carrier. Debris was floating everywhere, following the ship on its downward trajectory to the planet. Gently pushing off it if I needed to move it out of the way, I kept going down.

Even before landing, I could see why the doors were stuck. The damaged reactor causing explosions throughout the ship hadn’t been gentle to this particular hangar.

“I’m out. No wonder this thing got stuck. There’s debris stuck in it everywhere.”, I muttered through the comms line, then raised my voice. “I’m just gonna have to go in there and tell that stupid system to open, even if the doors tear themselves to pieces doing it.”

My mag boots made contact with a noticeable clunk, disrupting the silence of otherwise quiet vacuum. Faint sounds of explosions, carried through the metal, quickly added themselves to it.

“Alright, I’m on. Don’t you dare move while I’m still attached.”

In normal times, it would perhaps have made for an amusing joke between friends, but right now, such a delay could have been fatal. I began to move forward with slow, careful steps, until I reached the edge of the gap in the hangar doors. Avoiding any abrupt movements in an open zero-G environment such as this was very important, if you didn’t want to find yourself spinning out of control, in case you lost ground contact for any reason.

Luckily, I didn’t, and used the bay doors in a similar way to the airlock to get inside. They had been pelted by debris, one of them struck and pierced by a particularly large one. Sound returned when I passed the blue energy field keeping the air in, which was flickering.

“Okay, I’m in. Looks like the air containment field might fail, but I shouldn’t be in here for long.”

Two raiders, wherever they’d come from, were near the front of the ship, where I had landed, trying to force access to the ship’s entry elevator. I thought about shooting them, but decided against it and remotely activated one of the concealed, exterior defense turrets. Soon, what was once two raiders became two bullet-ridden husks, and I moved on, toward a console at, of course, the other end of the chamber. The cable stopped allowing me from moving forward roughly halfway through.

“Going to have to detach the cable.”, I informed Meowers. “Leave it out in case I need something to grab on to.”

“Warning. Reactor condition critical. Meltdown in T minus one minute, thirty seconds.”, the carrier system announced.

“Better hurry up, Kira.”, I murmured, not loud enough for Meowers to catch it.

I decided to use the wreckage that had found its way inside to make crossing the chamber faster, noticing I hadn’t triggered my shield, which could have ended very badly if an explosion occurred near me. I rectified that mistake, and stopped my movement using the wall near the console controlling hangar doors.

I quickly plugged an override in and slammed my fist down on the control panel, then hopped on to the pad. The elevator jolted up a few meters, after a few seconds of pulling itself free of an obstruction, then I heard an awful metal creak as the doors tried to open further, but remained jammed because of the piece of metal jammed into them.

“Oh, come on!”

“Warning. Meltdown in T minus one minute.”

I felt a not-so-subtle change in the hive’s voices, as the Thargoids began to quickly move away to abandon the wrecked carrier, likely sensing its imminent demise. Except for one. One of the ‘Glaive’ hunter types had stopped whatever it was doing, and begun firing at the metal blocking the door. Not something I was about to argue against, but its firepower alone wasn’t enough.

“Damn… Ina, that fucking wreckage piece is still stopping the doors from opening! Can you help that stupid thing blast it to shreds and not piss it off at the same time?”

I pushed up to float toward the nearest airlock on the port side of the Corvette.

“I’ll get my ship ready to fly, but I need that fucking door open so I can get out.”

I heard a deep rumble come from within the carrier as I entered the airlock.

“And do it quickly, if you don’t want to see me end in a ball of fire.”

Meanwhile, I spoke to June.

"I know you can hear me, June. Or, even if you don't... I have to say that anyway. You want to get to your ship, and I understand that. And we wanted to get to our ships too. Values? I know you're operating with logic, and with logic I'll speak. On the scale of values, these ships, for us, are on the same level as people who saved our lives once. This particular ship helped me to survive and even thrive more than any other person ever did. Then, a variable of trust. Imagine... Or what's the equivalent for AIs... Someone you don't know yet, you don't trust yet; and, in the moment of danger, this person, or this entity, in your case, stands between you and something of such tremendous value. You already have a plan, an algorithm of actions that you have to perform in order to save both yourself and that 'something of value', but you've been told not to do so. And not only 'not to do so', but completely entrust your own life and health, and the existence of that 'something of value' on that someone else. That's hardly acceptable for most, and totally unacceptable for me. And you can't make someone trust you in an insta..." Kasumi's transmission interrupted my thoughts. "Ah, hells. Just don't tell me..."

The view from my pilot seat have been... Peculiar. One of those new intermediate, 'hunter' Thargoid vessels, stopped nearby, and, without even giving a bit of its attention to me, opened fire, trying to remove a chunk of metal debris, sticking out of the bay door. A sharp piece of metal struck the door, pierced it and get stuck halfway through. Carefully nudging and rotating, aware of the safety cord still hanging out of the opened airlock, I deployed my cannons and took aim.

Not to piss off the Thargoid? Oh, okay, but it felt like shooting at an apple on someone's head. With a shotgun instead of a bow. I aimed a little lower: less chance of getting nasty ricochets or hitting the Thargoid with a stray piece of shrapnel.

First salvo shook the door, adding more deep grooves to its surface and nudging the chunk of metal a little. Second one, landing nearby, increased the effect, but damn those carrier decks are tough. Only the third one was able to loosen the piece of metal enough for it to dislodge. The bay doors vibrated violently for a moment and then began moving again.

"Should be free now, I see them moving."
