Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"I've been to Inara a few times. Mostly ERS business, picking up VIPs. We've been looking into possibly supplying slaves to the Imperial companies repairing the station but there are certain complications. One being it is not an Imperial system, so the ISA has to issue a permit for transport outside of Imperial Space for the sole purpose of post Thargoid recovery efforts. The other is that the ineffectual security services has led to some unsavory elements gaining control of the commodities markets."

Vasil took one of the pastries. "By unsavory I mean the kind that literally cuts their competitors out of the market. Usually into several pieces." He'd run afoul of them in the past, but Vasil did not think that was worth mentioning, especially since he had accepted their payment offer to end his shipments of cheap foodstuffs. Profit, after all, is profit.

"As for your town building problems, we can discuss that at length, but usually you have to use the bureaucracy against intrusive or uncooperative bureaucrats." Vasil chuckled. "One thing that irritates the hell of bureaucrat is holding them to their own rules and regulations."

Vasil took a bite of the small, raspberry croissant. "Knowing their past can also help. Often, just a hint that the IISS might suspect corruption is enough to remind them that the Emporer does not look favorably on such things."
13 Feb 2024, 12:53am
"Ah" answered Lambast, "I think you have found my fatal floor. I am not at home to subtlety. Hidden history I can find, but applying gentle presser in the right place?"

She shrugged.

"I may find playing the officious bureaucrat entertains for a while, providing I can come to grips with the rules"

Standing up, Lambast made sure there were no flakes of croissants or, god forbid, spots of jam tarnishing her immaculate uniform.

"Thank you for your warning about the goings-on at Inara. It seems I have even more homework to do before I depart. Last time I visited that moron-magnet, I was preoccupied with Christmas preparations. I shall be sure to better informed next time"

Standing straight, Lambast gave Vasil a short, but respectful curtsy. His family was a name, after all, and he had taken time out of his busy day to humour her inquires.

"Thank you for your hospitality. Should you find your self in a system with one of my facilities, or indeed Cubeo, I will gladly return the kindness"
13 Feb 2024, 3:15am
Vasil stood when she did, nodded in response. He may have spent most of the past 30 years in the deep void, but the Imperial etiquette that tutors and nannies had filled him with in childhood was as instinctual as breathing when dealing with other Imperials, as was the language in which they were told to teach. "Călătorii sigure, Doamnă. Safe travels, Lady Mercy."

Vasil waited for her to turn and leave before tapping the com badge on his collar and contacting the COVAS on the Always Lost. "Jefferson, prep ship. Departure in 4 hours for Cemiess. Inform Octavia of my arrival and request private meeting."

It would be good to take the Always Lost out for a trip. He'd not had much opportunity to use it the past few months, and as odd as it sounded, he did not want the ship to feel neglected. Besides, it irritated Octavia to have "that atrociously common craft" of his land at one of her private pads.

One evening, after my usual common daily shift, I took a few hours to catch up with the news. My life had already begun its gradual return to the normal pace after being literally restarted from scratch, I've been out for more than a month, and, well... It's always a good idea to know what's happening around. Straight to the point: immediately, in my subscriptions feed, I spotted a few publishings from Kasumi... Kira... whatever she wants people to call her, and they were recent. Regarding abductees, Thargoids in general and all that, and it seems like, all the time I've been on Duamta 4, in the Aegis HQ Medical, she's been somewhere close, maybe in the same building complex. I've no idea where exactly they keep her but, from what she wrote, it looked more like an adequate apartment rather than a quarantine cell or a hospital ward.

So, making sure the stuff in the camp is going smoothly and arranging a leave for a couple of days, I took off for Duamta. Aegis representative told me where to land and what to do, gave me permission to visit her, all that, yet I still took my uniform jacket to let any guards or other concerned personnel know who the heck I am, since some words in those posts had made me think about possible... unwanted guests.

One of the Aegis nurses took me through the corridors to the apartment and pressed the door terminal button, waiting for Kasumi to respond. While I've been, of course, suppressing my grin looking at the guards that stood next to the door and stared at me.

On our way here, the nurse told me that Kasumi might look 'different' and 'unusual', 'not as I remember her', but didn't specify anything. Was it politeness or privacy? At least she reassured me that everything is okay regarding her health in general, and that was everything I wanted to know at that moment. 'Look different'... Damn, who am I to judge.
25 Feb 2024, 11:12pm
My wrist computer - linked to local systems - gave off a buzz, as though to let me know someone was at the door. I removed my left arm from the knee, as I was currently curled up into a ball, sat on the bed with knees at chest level, and tapped on it to indicate I was fine with whoever was outside entering. Then I returned that left hand to its original spot and waited, keeping an eye on the entrance to the bedroom from the living room... not knowing just what, or who, was about to come inside.

The only clue I had was that it couldn't be Seo, who usually didn't bother to announce her presence like that before coming in.
25 Feb 2024, 11:29pm
The door slid to the side, and, judging by what I saw from the doorway, it really has been a good, quite spacious apartment, not a cell. The nurse looked up at my face, then at the door, then at my face again. Okay, I got it, she wanted to know. Thankfully, my door routine has become automatic after several repetitions, so I squeezed in without any problems.

The living room was empty once I got inside, so there was a choice: apparently, the bedroom to the left, and the bathroom to the right. Thinking that it isn't exactly Kasumi's thing, to open her door for guests while being in the bathroom, I took the left turn, meeting another doorway.

And then the moment of witnessing.

Once I lowered my head to get through the door, I saw Kasumi, sitting on the bed with her knees close to her chest. The skin colour, unusually pale, snow white, was the first thing I noticed, yet I didn't even manage to comment on that as my brain registered another difference. A big one. Size of her... lower half.

I stopped on my tracks, a grin slowly appearing on my face since I remembered her VR avatar being... no, not like this, even smaller. What to say in that kind of a situation? Simple 'hello' doesn't fit, obviously. So the 'amused' option it would be since yeah, I've been amused.

"Weeeeee! Heeey, that's... Awesome!"
25 Feb 2024, 11:44pm
Seeing an unusually large arm poking through the door was odd enough, and it became even stranger when a very big head followed, until I had someone that was... far too tall for my own liking standing in front of me, and somehow being oddly excited while rather unsurprised about the size of my body. Which had me curious in its own right, but the uncomfortable feeling at seeing this giant woman was... prevalent, especially when I didn't recognize her. Since I didn't have any gloves on at the moment, that also showed in a kind of, alerted, solid yellow glow on that funny Thargoid glyph, on the back of my right hand.

Trying to get words out of my mouth was a terrible failure. So I kind of just... looked, not quite staring, trying to not show my discomfort and embarrassment too much, while there was also a visible confusion on my face. Something in my head said to hide the glyph on my hand, too, but... for some other reason indiscernible to me, I chose not to do so. And still moved backward on the bed a little, not sure what to make of this. And maybe part of it was trying to hide the pillow tower I needed to lie comfortably, behind me.
26 Feb 2024, 12:04am
Something... was off. I saw Kasumi opening her mouth for a split second, just a little, as if trying to say something, but she remained silent. And that yellowish glow on her hand... Its shape strangely resembled a Thargoid logogram. Maybe incompleted, or different from what I saw before, but it couldn't have been anything else, the semblance was striking. And why did it glow yellow? And her face too, she looked confused, or even afraid maybe, but she saw me before. So, then I remembered my own misadventures. Perhaps, a memory loss. My memories were restored quickly, but then, my loss of consciousness was of the commonly known nature of being injured, not being abducted by the bugs, and the doc helped me by providing me with the audio recording which, kind of, pulled the rope to get everything else out too.

I looked at the entrance door quickly, and it was closed already, so the nurse was, probably, on her way back. But then, she told me that everything's fine with Kasumi's health. And I couldn't put the blame on the bugs completely, since, apart from the skin colour, those specific changes in specific body features were something she liked. Really, really liked. And she didn't look sick after all. Just lazy, as she likes to be. She's comfortable in this place.

"Mhmmm, okaaaay...", I muttered quietly, stopping my advance and sitting on the floor, behind the doorway, with my legs tucked underneath. Then, I raised my hand slowly at the chest level and waved it left to right several times, looking as slow and friendly as possible.

"Hello!.. Kasumi, how are you? How long have you been here?"
26 Feb 2024, 12:13am
"... how do you know my name? I don't remember knowing you."

I tried to push aside some of the discomfort at this very unusual sight, which I wasn't really fond of, and... tried to study the woman's appearance. But nothing would really come to my head. At least I didn't need to back off further on the bed.

"I have been here for... two months. Maybe. Have we met?"

I felt a bit of buzzing in my head, which made the glyph turn into more of an alert orange color, slowly pulsing. Something that I couldn't suppress, due to it reflecting emotional or mind state - not that this visitor knew that - and right now, some of it was the Thargoids' voices apparently not being happy with her. Something I equally didn't understand. And I... decided to mention that, if sounding a little distraught.

"The voices don't like you. Why don't they like you?"
26 Feb 2024, 12:29am
"The voices?...", I cut my phrase short at this point, getting to a quiet, whispering tone. "Holy craps... Okay, okay..."

"Of course we have met, and not only just 'met'. I'm Ina...", I remembered that I had my uniform jacket on, I appeared here wearing it for Aegis folks mostly, but it seemed like it could've been helpful now too. "Here. Ina Muir, AXDF", I pointed my finger at the nameplate, yet perhaps she was too far away to see my name on it. So, I turned the side of my sleeve with the patches towards her.

"Perhaps that's why the voices don't like me... If I were them, I'd totally hate myself too," sounded like a quiet comment addressed to nobody in particular.

"See," I returned to my normal voice volume, "we met a few months ago helping your friend Silvia. Then, we played that VR thing together, where you've been...", I drawn a curved line in the air with my finger, "...like this. Even smaller maybe. Then the bugs snatched you and I led the operation to bring you back. Jana was also there. Both in the VR and in person, later, flying her ship during the operation."

Deciding that it may be more than enough for a person with a memory loss, I stopped, waiting for any reply.
26 Feb 2024, 12:43am
"Ina ..." I let the name hang in the air for a few seconds. "No. Sorry. I... don't remember."

I thought about the rest of the mentions.

"What is AXDF? And I don't remember a 'Silvia' either. Only Jana, because she visited. Twice. She told me about the, VR thing. I remember a few things about it, but not a lot. And I found... pictures ..."

Something clicked in my mind. I removed both arms from my knees and pulled the wrist computer off, selecting the picture with this big... tall, woman, in the center, and me and Jana on either side, then reached past my oversized thighs to place it around about at the edge of the bed, facing her. Which also exposed my rather large breast to view for just a moment, while it would've been at least partially obscured by the legs prior.

"Did we take that picture? She said we did. And I remember Thargoids, or was told. That it is their voices. I have memories of what happened again, and from my... old logs, too."

Part of me thought about mentioning that I had played around in that VR space since Jana's first visit, and that it was the catalyst behind me having this shape now. But I wanted answers to my own question first. The glyph was still pulsing in that orange color, but slightly less intense, because of that partial realization this might have something to do with the picture.
26 Feb 2024, 12:57am
Realising that the situation is worse than I was prepared for, I let out a deep sigh, but then it was pushed away by the amused smile as I observed that new version of Kasumi moving on the bed.

"Yes, that's a picture taken in the VR environment, you, me and Jana. Or, to be more correct, our virtual avatars," I nodded, looking at the picture. "I can't remember the exact dates but perhaps it was a day or two before you got abducted by Thargoids."

"And the AXDF stands for Anti-Xeno Defence Force. We're a military organisation, dedicated to protecting humanity from Thargoids, allied with Aegis. I'm an officer, and an active pilot of the AXDF."

I paused for a second, thinking. Would it be appropriate to mention her older logs? But then, she did it first.

"Your old logs, you mentioned someone named 'Ina' a few times. That's me. Sorry I couldn't visit you earlier, I've been severely wounded myself, almost two months ago, and taken to the HQ Medical, right here, on Duamta."
26 Feb 2024, 1:17am
“But the… ‘avatars’ are virtual. Why are you like this now? Is it because of that injury?”

I couldn’t say I felt comfortable yet. Not only because she was too tall for my tastes, though.

“I’m… sorry I can’t remember. Many things went missing when I was… taken. And I can’t remember any people. Only… things, surrounding them, maybe.”

I paused for a second.

“Jana said she fights Thargoids too, in the Bubble, but they don’t get angry at her. Why is that? And she was… ‘normal’, not big like in that picture. She did seem to like me, though.”
26 Feb 2024, 1:30am
"Yeah...", still not being sure about the clarity of her mind, I backed down to a made up legend option. "I was a mess, literally. My brain and my heart were the only things that kept working somehow. Broken bones, broken spine, bruises, burns, all kinds of funny stuff. They had to pump so much progenitor cells in me that it somehow reactivated the growth."

I can't say it was actually comfortable, to lie like that. That legend was an okay thing to throw at people when they ask too much, but not for a person that I call my friend. Yet, I took her condition as a mitigating factor to suppress the sharp, abrasive discomfort that appeared immediately. I will tell, but later.

"Don't worry," I smiled lightly, "It happens. I've seen many cases of memory loss. And, your Thargoid voices... Maybe they're able to recognise me. I've been in this for a long time already..."

And, to return to something more positive, I added in a more lighthearted tone:

"And hey, I like you too. Even if you can't remember it."
26 Feb 2024, 1:40am
“A… progenitor cell? I haven’t heard of… whatever it is. There is nothing in my logs about them. Maybe, not important to me.”

Part of me somehow doubted the story was really true, but this didn’t feel like the point to question it.

“Jana saw me in my… ‘normal’ body, first. Then when I was big. And she… maybe, poked into it, when I showed her.”

I pointed at my quite enlarged lower half to remove any doubt about which part I meant.

“She did ask me to show it while standing.”
