Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

I kicked off some dust from my right shoulder, which was the worst I’d gotten of the blast.

“No need to worry. I’ve had worse things land on me. But that better be the last of those shitty mines. I hate this stupid bullshit. We’ve gotten nowhere in how long?”

I looked around as more of the debris settled, also tossing a painkiller to the heavy gunner who’d taken most of the hits. And a medkit which I currently didn’t need, and had two of anyway.

“I’d say that that painkiller will hit, but it might just work out right for you.”

An indirect reference to me requiring stronger hits of substances to feel anything, following the modifications made to me by the Thargoids.

“Might also want to consider going back after that hit. Now, about that fox …”

I looked around for Melli, but saw no obvious signs of any movement, and I knew that little thing was fast enough to get out of the way. Probably hiding somewhere that I couldn't see.

"Shit!"

I gave my shield charge indicator a quick glance. 72%. Could've been much worse. Everything happened... In an instant. A few seconds back, I carefully walked behind Melli waiting for any signals in fox's behaviour. At some point, she got confused and stopped, and a group of six commandos absent-mindedly wandered ahead of her... And everything went bloody upside down. A shockwave almost knocked me off my feet, a soldier grabbed me by the shoulder and pulled closer to the wall, where I crouched and reflexively covered my head. Shields pulsated as a shower of metal debris whipped my armour, I pushed my legs against the floor as strong as I could to withstand the explosion, and right when I decided to raise my head, a damned piece of sheet metal from the wall panels struck me flat into the face.

"Friggin bastards."

Annoyed, I pushed the piece of metal away and looked at the soldier, nodding in a sign of gratitude. Luckily, he seemed okay too. Mostly being covered by my armour. Phah. Can't blame him. Anyway, I had to do something.

"Check your suits, the air may start leaking out!", I shouted, darting forward, down the corridor, through the smoke and haze, pushing the metal debris and bent panels away. Once I cleared the wall of smoke that divided the passageway, I saw a group of six commandos, crouched in pain, pressing their arms against their wounds: some of them might've been still alive.

"We've got wounded here! Pull them back!", I shouted again, covering behind a vertical piece of reinforced bulkhead, scorched and deformed, yet still looking solid enough to cover me from gunfire. Shouldering the rifle, I aimed forward, at the doorway leading to the second half of the stairs.

"Got you covered now. Treat your wounds and get your bearings."

I followed Meowers through the smoke that still lingered, and noticed some movement in her bag. A moment later, Melli plopped out and rushed off, stopping to hide behind my legs.

"Well, at least one of us got out of this in one piece.", I remarked, and began to feel more than annoyed again. My hand moved back to the grenade on my belt.

"Alright, I'm way past tired of this bullshit. Get everyone clear of the danger zone once they can be moved, and I'll cause all of that mine bullshit to blast up to that fucking door at the top."

I was obviously not thinking straight in saying that, but my patience for dealing with the trapped area had already been at its end before the raider idiots manually detonated some of the explosives, as I'd been suspecting them to. The string it had held on by was now definitely snapped.
01 Sep 2023, 10:09pm
I took a moment to realise what Kasumi had just said.

"Hells! Stop it!"

The second I spent looking at a grenade in Kasumi's hands felt like eternity.

"Stand down! You will depressurise everything and we end up floating in space. I don't want that. Do you?"
01 Sep 2023, 10:15pm
"And how are you going to get us past those other mines? By having them blast our faces off again?", I snapped back.

The grenade remained in my right hand, though lowered, firmly holding it by the central body, rather than near the pin.

"If those stupid things are gonna blow anyway, we might as well do it now. The result will be all the same, and I'm fucking tired of wasting time playing with that asshole's trap game."
01 Sep 2023, 10:26pm
James reaches up and carefully places a hand on Kira's.

'No. That is not wise. Look closer. Those walls you see separate us from space. Another explosion like that will risk so much more than us taking our time.'

The heavy gunner carefully removes the grenade from Kira's hand and places it on his belt. As he does so he notices the small orb in the small of Kira's back.

'Why do you have an AI?'

****

Diaz stands looking at the security officer who had detonated the charge with an inquisitive look on his face.

'Well what's the status?'

'7 injured sir. The rest managed to escape relatively unharmed. We have no more traps set up.'

'Gah! Fuck this let's meet them half way. I have a craving for bitch blood!'
01 Sep 2023, 10:34pm
"I... ugh, fine."

I didn't resist when the gunner pulled the grenade from my hands, surprisingly gently for a man of that size. Then I answered his other question.

"It's not mine. You remember that idiot who charged right into us in the hangar? Well, it was hers. Figured I shouldn't leave it here - and yes, I know how to keep one and make sure it doesn't get thoughts about wiping all of humanity out."

My wrist computer blipped, alerting me to sudden movement on a camera it was monitoring on the bridge.

"Nevermind that, we've got worse to worry about. Looks like mister slave lord got tired of us taking our time and is coming right here. Get those wounded out of the firing line. Those who can still fight, you should come with us."

I looked at Meowers.

"Ready? Looks like this is going to be it. Not the place I'd have liked to fight in - " I gestured at the emergency stairs overall. " - but I guess it'll have to do."
01 Sep 2023, 10:42pm
I crouched behind the bent bulkhead and took a better aim at the doorway in front of me. No more than twenty metres. Shields were still on the recharge, so I sped up the process using a battery. Looks like it was my last one.

"Come get some, you little shits."
01 Sep 2023, 10:51pm
“You know what, he wants to come to us, he can have it. Maybe we should set up in the next room, though, not in here. Walls are a bit thin after that blast, and I don’t want it to lose pressure while fighting.”

I looked at the two gunners.

“How fighting capable are you two? Cause we’ll probably want some good coverage of that door ahead. Or wherever they’re likely to come from if we move into that room. And …”

I threw a hinting look at the various debris floating around, some of it within arm’s reach.

“Since they were so kind to provide us with some busted metal, why don’t we set up some improvised cover positions with it? Just jam it right into the deck. If it looks like it can take a bullet. Just don’t cut yourself on it.”
01 Sep 2023, 11:16pm
"She's right," I said loudly, to make my words sound more like a command. "Use everything you can get your hands on to build covers."
01 Sep 2023, 11:33pm
I left the gunners and other commandos to do their thing about getting improvised cover positions set up, trying to figure out myself where to set up. Space felt a little too enclosed to use my railgun in, and the layout as a whole seemed to encourage engagements at closer ranges than I was usually comfortable with, at least with the kind of weapon loadout I carried.

I also had some doubts about using it at all, given how likely it was to pierce the hull in this sectiong - not that it would result in a spontaneous decompression, but air would still get sucked out of the room over time slowly, and it was not something to want to worry about now. Melli still circled my feet, equally unsure where to go, so I put off my decision until our improvised cover position was set up. If I didn't make a decision, I could rely on the world making it for me here.

Marcus grabs a large chunk of floating debris and jams it into the deck James grabs another and follows suit. After a brief period of finding the largest chunks they could find a quick wall was built up with points for the commandos to set up and fire from. The corridor was a bit wider than the rest of the stair area and the breach in the deck provided an obstacle or what would have been an obstacle if not for zero-G. James looks over at Marcus and pulls him off the wall.

'Go back to the conda. You are in no shape to continue the fight.'

'Fuck that. I'd rather go down swinging than let Aventus...'

'Let me do what exactly?'

Aventus approaches from behind the group and cuts off Marcus before he has a chance to finish his statement.

'What the fuck?!'

'Heard an explosion came to see what the hell happened. My comms cut out for some reason. What's the situation here?'

'Diaz and his cronies are own their way here right now. We have 7 injured 6 unable to fight. We don't really have a plan other than shoot to kill.'

Aventus looks around each of the commandos is covered in debris and dust from the explosion. Melli is circling around Kira's feet and the commandos who can fight are posted up behind a makeshift wall.

'Marcus go back to the ship and watch over Venus. She is stable for now but will need observation.'

'Fine, but I swear if James get the kill I'm going to be pissed.'

'Fine, but I swear if James get the kill I'm going to be pissed.'

"Hey, hey hey. Are we going to ignore the bitch in the room that had to watch Silvia be kidnapped because of that guy? If anyone's going to be pissed for not getting the kill, it'll be me.", I stated, both hands firmly places as fists on my hips.

"And if you're gonna leave ...", I addressed at the injured gunner. "Could we use that big gun as like a machine gun emplacement? That thing could really rain down some hellfire on those bastards as they come through that door."

I looked over in that direction and found Meowers still overlooking the aforementioned door, somewhere ahead of the makeshift barricade, prompting me to activate the personal comms link, clearing my throat twice in short order.

"Hm hm. The cover's back here, not where you're at. And you don't want to be caught in a flood of pirates, do you?"

As if to support my statement, Melli ran over to her and began to tug away at one of her boots lightly.
02 Sep 2023, 12:10pm
Marcus looks at his gun them back to Kira. If his visor were see through the look on his face would be similar to that of a child who had just been told to hand over its favorite toy. He then looks over to James who chuckles a bit before addressing Kira.

'You'd be hard pressed to get him to let that thing go. Sometimes I wonder if he loves that gun more than me, and I am his brother.'

'Well I don't see you willingly handing your gun off to them to use as a stationary emplacement. 'Sides I only got enough plasma for 2000 rounds. It'll eat through that quickly.'

Aventus walks over to Marus and places a hand on his shoulder.

'It's not her that will be using it. It'll be me. I know this weapon inside and out. Remember I helped you two design them.'

'But why the hell do you need it. It's not like he has 100 raiders to throw at us.'

'We don't know that. Now hand it over and get your ass along with the wounded back to the ship. That's an order.'

'But... ugh... fine... here'

Marcus pulls off the pack on his back and hands it and the gun to Aventus and takes the group of injured back to Lifeboat. Aventus pulls a panel off the side of the plasma chamber revealing a tripod with magnetic feet. He quickly sets it up and attaches the gun to the tripod. The pack mounts directly to the legs of the tripod secured firmly by the magnetic locks.

****

Silvia looks around the bridge trying to find someway to escape. Ina had called over the comms and assured her that the thargoids were there to attack the carrier but she was having a hard time believing that. The two cronies Diaz had picked out to watch over her were sat pointing what appeared to be plasma shotguns in her direction. The order to kill her if anyone but Diaz showed up was unsettling. Fear was fully set in, she was helpless in this moment. She couldn't fight all of these people, not alone and certainly not without her augmented armor. She was quite literally the damsel in distress and she hated it.

Diaz and his crew have made it half way to the commandos and Diaz looks around. He presses forwards following behind the raiders using them as a sort of shield from any potential gun fire. The spot in which the team was at was going to be a funnel of sorts and he was not going to take the shots himself, at least not initially.
02 Sep 2023, 1:31pm
With the cover position well defined and set up, finding a spot further back was much easier, actually allowing me to get shots off with ease, while the raiders were held at bay by our defensive formation. Felt some light disappointment at not getting to play with the big toy, but it was less important than succeeding.

I’d placed both of my remaining shock mines just in front of the door too, which would give any of the first few to come through one big headache. Melli was still running around near me as well.

“Find a little spot to hide in. Wait for those idiots to get closer, then cause a little mess. Yeah?”, I told Melli. It almost looked like the creature’s eyes were glowing in malevolent manner behind the armor it was wearing, before it rushed off.

‘Not much longer now.’, I thought to myself, and got ready, preemptively charging my railgun, pointed toward the door, shield up. Let go of the trigger when the charge finished, as current setting only fired after a second pull, and began waiting for targets to show up.
