Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Maul watched as Descartes walked away. Looking down at his boots a bit confused, he shrugged and released the fasteners and slid them off. He attached them to a clip on his backpack and looked down at his feet again. It felt odd to see the signature black skin tight Remlok design exposed. After a few tippy taps of his feet to get the feel for the maglock, he followed in the direction Descartes went and arrived at the bridge a few moments later.

As the door slid open to allow Maul access to the bridge it had dawned on him that he had never been on a Federal Corvette before and was now gawking at his surroundings. It was a bit dirty as Descartes had previously mentioned but he was still intrigued all the same.

"Woah, seems even bigger on the inside. Gotta work with the Feds to get one these, right? Bet that was 'fun'" Maul said, with a hint of sarcasm when speaking about the Federation.
21 Jan 2023, 8:11pm
It occured to me that my long-time obsession with keeping the bridge spotlessly clean was rather absurd now as I brushed the dirt from a co-pilot seat for him.

"Sometimes we have to follow whatever looks promising or profitable. I also have an Imperial Eagle and Courier."

I sat.

Not the time to mention that I was a titular Rear Admiral in the Fedral navy, after all, it carried no power or 'real' rank. It was in name only.

"I used to think a Corvette would be the ideal combination of warship and large hauler. It isn't. You have to sacrifice capacity for strength or vice versa. And it needs good pilots for to make the on-board fighter's effective."

It was also expensive to run. Before inheriting the fortune I had no interest in money, except as a means to an end. Now I don't like being parted from it by cheats, pirates, or greedy crooks.

"Any more ideas about a plan.?"

This is hard work.
The repeated hops from the station were uneventful and forgettable. Mual should have left just after me. The auto-pilot landed uncomfortably and rather too far from the rendezvous. I managed to drag the the goods into the SRV and struggle into my EVA suit. By the time I'd driven to the right co-ordinates, unloaded the container and climbed back in, I could feel sweat running into the small of my back and down the front of my chest. The suit's life-support was struggling to cope. 2,000 metres from the container I settled down to wait, hoping it would soon be over. What more could I do.

Long hours secured to a treadmill and exercise bands in zero G must be paying off, but carrying out even the smallest physical activity on a three G planet is still hard work. Waiting om my Corvette with Maul for our ships to arrive had been hard work too. I've lost the art of social intercourse and conversation. Too much time spent detached and alone in abstract thought. Now all I can do is wait for the contacts to show. Hopefully with Willow. I was immensely concerned about the condition she might be in. Had they given her deliberately destroyed hand the best medical treatment. How well had they treated her. My fault for involving her, allowing her to become involved in my own sordid private war. Now even more time to think. Too much time, yet so little. What next.

Sitting alone in my Scarab I looked up out of the transparent, goldfish-bowl bubble. Maul should be 'up there' somewhere. Was Willow. Were my adversaries. Try not to worry, not to think. Better still, try to think of nothing. A flash of light. here they are.

The Courier shook and rattled as it approached the planets surface. The ships vibrant red paint was worn and chipped seemingly from previous jobs. The light struck the side to illuminate the nameplate "Desumashin". The ships silhouette differed from the standard Courier. It was altered by the kit installed to making the ship seem beefier than normal.

Maul slowly and very carefully brought the ship to a halt and landed on the high G planets surface. After a few minutes he rolled up next to Descartes in his Scorpion and enabled coms.

"Hey, sorry I'm late. Had to settle a few things with Carlo back on station. Thought he deserved a tip for bringing my ship out to the boonies with all this Goid shit going on. I told him, 'Ya know what Carlo I-"

Maul was cut short by a flash of light accompanied by the sounds of multiple ships ripping out of super cruise over head. He looked through the glass of the Scorpion over at Descartes in her SRV.

"Looks like this is it. You ready?"

Truthfully, he himself wasn't ready for what may come to be. He was essentially being held together by duct tape at this point. The small supply of Push and Hush he had been feeding off of was finally beginning to run dry. It had kept his mind clear and able to focus so far, now he was just focused on getting everyone out of here alive. This time would be different it had to be. No more losses.
25 Jan 2023, 8:26pm
"Fuck no!"

I'd never been less ready for anything. The first ship landed. Time to put myself on the line. Nothing else mattered.

"Wait on your ship Maul. Target them. Be ready to pick her up and run."

Giving him a few minutes I climbed out, struggled to laboriously trudge all the way back to the container as instructed and waited. They deployed an SRV and trundled towards me. I could only make out one person on board. Kohatu. It took him an age to disembark. We were both unarmed.

"Long time Descartes. You've grown more beautiful with age." He was struggling to catch his breath.

"Long time wasted. Has it been worth it all for that?" I nodded towards the container.

"It would have been worth it to have you, watch you writhe beneath me."

He clicked open the container, took out the first little package."
'The Private Life of Chairman Mao - Li Zhisui'." Ah yes, an interesting insight." He smashed it open.

'Alice's Adventures in wonderland.' "General Ho Chien thought that giving animals a voice was an insult to humans." Again he cracked it open allowing the polluted atmosphere to begin eating the pages, effectively destroying them.

"Not squirming Descartes? your life's work crumbling before your eyes?"

"Where is the girl?"

"Oh please, allow me this small pleasure at least." He smiled inside his helmet.

"I'm too old and tired to posess you now. Besides, I've done everything I want in my dreams."

He made a motion to his ship. The cargo hold opened and a small bent figure slowly emerged, barely able to walk.
25 Jan 2023, 8:42pm
Marshal rolled his eyes. He'd got this whole thing set up, so everyone was safe and no one had to get shot, but now the employer had to get his crusty old arse involved.

He was real glad he wasn't down there; switching monitors, Marshal found Maul. The guy was on his damn ship. Why the fuck would the stupid old croak let that happen? Damn, Marshal really wanted to talk to Maul, and see if he could get him on the team. He'd looked into the hacker and he was at least as good as the best guy Marshal had in the Outfit, but that wasn't going to happen now.

Still, Marshal had to play along, Kohatu still hadn't undone the bad review he'd left for losing Descartes and failing to find the goods. It sounded petty, but a mercenary group lived and died by their reputation. This Descartes situation caused by a random salvager had done a number on his perfect record, along with the moody old bastard's review.

Now, the men he'd sent down for the look of the thing were not the cream of the crop, but they were in danger of getting waisted by a waisted net-jock. He'd give the old bastard another minute to enjoy his victory, and then politely remind him to upload the amendment to his previous comments on the Outfit's service, then he'd pull his boys out of there.

He wasn't about to let his men get killed because some old dude had a stiffy for a blond.

Willow tried to look up. A giant orange star burned in the sky. It must have been close because she felt the heat through her suit, and worried she'd burn if she left the shade of the ship. That didn't feel like it was going to be a problem because the gravity was way too much for her any way. Her heart was already straining to pump a few grams of blood to her brain, and her legs felt like sacks of water about to split.

She struggled to hold her hand up and shield her eyes against the sun because her lightweight helmet wasn't doing the job, but its beams poured through the hole in her palm and dazzled her anyway.

Maul sat slouched on his ship as he viewed the happenings from the point of view of Descartes’ insight device. Unknowingly to her, he’d highjacked the feed whilst they sat on her ship back at Fort Xeno while they discussed a plan. It was for everyone’s safety as far as he was concerned and NOT letting her know that he’d hacked her suits Insight was for HIS safety.

The AR projection of the events played out in real time in front of Maul. He could see Willow was in rough condition.

“Descartes, Willow’s looking bad out there. We gotta get her outta there and off this hellish planet. I can bring the scorpion for evac, you just say the word.”

"You'll have to pick her up and carry her. Get there A.S.A.P."

Kohatu came closer, his visor almost coming into contact with mine.

"Ahhh, my eyes deceive me from a distance. Such a wound. A dreadful disfigurement."

There was more than a hint of pleasure in his voice.

"I do hope it hurts." He attempted to smile, revealing stumpy teeth and deeply lined skin, before he went on...

"I longed to sip from those honeyed lips as I destroyed you. The years have not been kind to you Descartes."

He turned to stagger away as ships began to land. My ships. Athena my Corvette. Adastria, Artemis, Terpsichore and Demeter - my bounty-hunter from Jameson. My money-making passenger carrier from Sothis and Robigo Mines. Everything

VOICE NOTE. Descartes, 26 January 3309. Synuefe HK-C d14-113 4

Ships are landing. .

Kohatu's in his SRV. Lowered the little laser to point in my direction.

Obliterated the remains of my library with a short burst. Then my SRV.

My ships are being destroyed even before they touch the ground. Slowly and deliberately targeted by the huge laser-canon on Kohatu's cutter. A fortune in transport costs alone. Someone must have gained full access to my accounts to organise and pay for all of this destruction.

Fuck you Kohatu.

Knocked off my feet, flying debris. Depressurization. Terminal damage.

I'm well and truly hacked.

Maul's Scorpion on his way to Willow. He drove right past me.

Leave me with my scar in your book of the dead. Goodbye Willow.

END OF TRANMISSION.

"Swim to me. Let me enfold you. Here I am. Waiting to hold you."

YüP passenger fleet has earned us the imperial permit to fly to Summerland. With their concentrated effort to do charity missions around Cemiess, they've fulfilled the quota of succeful missions in the Empire territory, the company planned to do before the thargoid attack. This allows us some freedom of mobility and the planned mission towards Pleiades can take place. The ship to be sent is still in question, the natural choice would be the AspX, but the pilot says he might want to have something more nimble, especially if the mission involves much exobiological research.

All the way out here testing if the Goids are hungry for their material. Seems not but then I've never killed one...and testing there cold detection. Check in again if promising.

“So like, I’m back, I guess. I got myself a long contract on Citi Gateway in Inara, a Goid rebuild. So, I’m, gonna be here a while. Be great to see you Descartes.

Will."

'Great! Just like that. From nowhere.'

Why now when I'm further away from civilisation than I've ever been before? It's not for nothing someone decided to call this the 'Lonely Lantern' Nebula. Nice view of the Perseus Crags from up here - not that up, down, above or below make any sense. Peaceful, no pirates. No enemies. No pressure. No worries. So, Why now?

230 Jumps, more or less, back to Colonia. If I include FSD eating neutron stars. Book a trip on to the next shuttle to Citi Gateway, and wander in to the Tired Old 'Galactic Bar'.

'Hi Willow', hug.

It's not going to happen.

Yet.

I composed a reply.

"Good to hear from you Willow. Hope you have fully recovered from that awful episode. Would love to get together. Might take a while, I'm nebula-hopping now. Only 100 or so left to visit. We really should keep in touch. Take care. Descartes."

What made me decide to come out here? Another nebula without many stars. Maybe I should go home. Home, joke! I can't call anywhere home, just one system after another, a ship here and there for a while. My lovely Corvette destroyed.

I re read willows message. "Goid rebuild." What was all that about?

Keying in my next destination from Galactic Mapping's list of nebulae, (one day the ships computer would recognise my voice and save me the trouble.) I waited for a route to come up which included scoopable stars. Considered whether I should go straight to Colonia from here, dismissed the thought. I would never come out here again, so should log everything I can.

I composed another reply to Willow.

"You mean to tell me you're trying to rebuild a Goid ship? Are you mad? I know you have a penchant for toxic chemicals but a Goid ship? What kind of outfit are you working for?

Descartes"

I pressed send. Worried about her. Wanted to see her.

I hit the FSD button.

FSD MALFUNCTION

What? I pulled up system diagnostics. The FSD was down to 50%, all those neutron boosted jumps had done their their damage. I was about to engage the AFMU when I remembered the last time this happened. Paused to carry out long distance scans, looks clear everywhere. The AFMU failed. Tried the backup success. Everything went quiet while the system repaired itself.

Kamadhenu, Shanjn Market.

The course has been planned, the goal is 69 G. Carinae C 5 A (proximate Gardner point).
Desdar activates the internal comm system. "Are you fine back there?"

"I'm fine. Guta always finds a way to be better than yesterday." O'Donnell answers. "Ready to be out there again."

"Good, I'll get us out there."

The ship lurches on the platform and soon the ship jumps into witchspace.

Amenta Ernst Point

The shipyard chief approaches Silvia and hands her his data pad.

'Excuse me miss. If I could have you sign this here to confirm the repairs completion I'd appreciate it.'

Silvia take the data pad and signs her name. She hands the data pad back to the man and turns to face her ship. The Dauntless II was finally properly repaired and and been refit for the new role. She makes her way up the loading ramp and into the cockpit. As she takes a seat in the commanders chair she opens a communication line with Jules.

'Jules you there? The Dauntless is ready to go.'

'Copy I'm set up directly outside the station. Sending over a wing beacon now.'

'Roger. Beacon received. Departing Station.'

The ship restraints release from the Dauntless II as Silvia requests permission to depart. A thunderous roar can be heard from the Drag tuned dirty drive thrusters as Silvia eases into the throttle. She clears the Station and links up with Jules.

'Alright setting a course to 69. G Carinae. Let's just hope nothing goes wrong.'

'Roger ready when you are.'

The two engage their FSDs and blip into witch space. Silvia prepares a message to Desdar.

"We just left Amenta. We are en route to 69 G. Carinae. No word yet from Eli hopefully they are ok. We will send you a wing request as soon as we make it to the system."
