Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Shitshitshit", I sounded frantically-apologetically. "Sorry. If only I knew it's that bad. Can't read thoughts, phah."

"Okay, so...", imitating a judge's hammer, raised a fist and moved it up and down several times. "No war here, no shooting and no bombing, I declare this room demilitarised at least for today and also you look cute when curled into a ball."

"What has changed?.. Does anyone know? Like, Seo? Or the doctors here?" The funny intermission was funny, but the situation itself demanded being more quiet, almost whispering. "Does it have any... connections to reality?"
04 Mar 2024, 11:24pm
“No… no, I don’t think… something in me says, it was always like this. But …”

I wasn’t sure how to continue. I hadn’t spoken to anyone about this yet, and it had… kind of just overwhelmed me, spilling out. I tried to shuffle into a more comfortable ‘ball position’, but it turned out, being as wide, if not wider, than the ‘depth’ of the couch made it difficult to sit on sideways. Still, I persisted. This was a ‘safe’ or shielded pose, and I needed it right now.

“I don’t know if it is connected. To what is happening, right now. I sometimes… just have nightmares. About being in a Thargoid ship… or ‘visions’, during the day. Sometimes, it happens when the noise is louder. Other times… it is quiet but they still happen. I don’t know which are memories, and which are… because of them.”

I took a deep breath. Coming out about it, whether I’d told her before or not, helped me steady out a little, and calmed an onset of trembling that’d come over me, a little.

“Seo knows, maybe. But she hasn’t said, if so. And I look cute when I am like this?”

I felt like gesturing but stayed in the wrapped up pose, however silly it had to look with those giant, disproportionate thighs looking like they were ready to begin fighting for dominance, or merge into each other.

"Our human brain does strange stuff from time to time, you know... Fake memories, imagination that looks and feels real and you forget it's your imagination, mixed up memories, stories of other people replacing our own impressions, all kinds of time effects...", had to stop myself from being too carried out listing possible memory quirks while making vague shapes in the air with my hands. "So. This may be true. Maybe not. Maybe it's partially true. But, until seeing any solid proof with your own eyes, you can't know exactly... Since the brain itself, the thing that tells you what's true and what isn't, can't figure that out."

"Let's think ships. If the Thargoids have any... pilots, crew of their vessels, then there are probably interiors inside. And, much likely, they follow the same visual... Style, to say. Shape. Nature."

"Remember those broadcasts about Federal operatives lost on... What was its name, that... Dedicant, yeah. That cultist megaship. Ah, your memory...", I corrected myself quickly. "So, the whole thing was decorated to imitate Thargoid...ish structures, inside, yet still following human anatomy and ergonomics. I'm not saying that you might've been there... Or any similar project... Just, the brain might've completed the partial picture. Having... something, as an input data. Something you can't separate now because, for you, it's an integral picture and everything is true."

"Or...", stopping to rub the tip of my nose with my hand for a little bit, I continued. "Or, you know, that whole Thargoid connection thing affects your sleep in that way too, rolling the same set of pictures again and again. More conspiracies, maybe someone... Human or even Thargoid... Wants you to think it's true."

"Phah, that's such a therapy stuff. Blah blah blah, put what your brain tries to tell you under criticism and scrutiny blah blah blah, like, telling you 'hey, of course you know your brain is broken' but in a soft way."

"Returning to your plans. Maybe they could help you to figure out, to put some puzzles together. I've no idea honestly but I'd totally hate to know that you didn't find anything useful at all... And yes, being a big ball suits you and looks cute, of course", I didn't forget the question, honestly, but wanted to reply on it last, to let some good words hang in the air for a little longer.
05 Mar 2024, 2:37am
"I don't... know. Some of it... feels too real. And I might have been on one of their ships. Maybe even a Titan. I would need to have been... for this to happen. Sometimes... I have dreams of getting connected to one of their ships directly, but I cannot remember if it really happened, too."

I thought of the other things said. Namely... the Far God cult megaship.

"The... Dedicant ..." My gaze went up in the air for a moment. "I... don't think I was there. But I might have been on another. Some time around last year... when Seo found that Nemesis thing, and was attacked. I don't remember the other ship's name, but I might have looked around there, to see if they had anything. And maybe they invited me onboard, because of... you know. But getting worshipped is not fun."

I paused again. Mostly, trying to organize scattered thoughts into something that would actually make sense when it came out of my mouth. And figure out what else to say.

"I have been to therapists, too. Psychological, mostly, but physical too. Not just because I am so big. They say I do well. And maybe I did mention the nightmares to psychologists, but I don't remember. Sometimes, it feels like it gets too much, and I just have to lie in the bed, with my brain barely working, the noise, hoping it will pass. The... medications, I think, they only help so much. If I don't forget to take them because I get distracted easily, sometimes. or I still lie in bed, because I try to make sense of what I see... it often gets nowhere."

I breathed in deeply, and looked at my big, round form again. And also the way it kind of didn't really fit on the couch, when sat on it sideways instead of the legs down the front.

"I really am so big. How much do you think I would need to be an actual ball?"

It wasn't serious... maybe... but it seemed like a fun thought experiment, and distraction from the more serious stuff.
05 Mar 2024, 4:16am
"Well, you were on a Titan. Recently. But, in more... common peasant kind of accommodation. And I can't say for sure about the past, of course, I simply don't know. Though, everything fits my previous... theory. Your brain thinks that's true. For some reason, of many. One of which may be... All that being actually true."

"Or the Dedicant," pointing a finger upwards, I added. "Memories may appear mixed, chaotic, especially if you weren't in a condition to memorise stuff well."

"You may probably know that all stuff we see in our sleep, if not affected by anything external directly... Is just a weird soup, a byproduct of brain activity. Sometimes it's like ultra-realistic in case of strong impressions. And seeing the same picture... episode... whatever, again and again, isn't that rare."

"Sooo...", I spread my arms slightly and paused, slowly turning my head left and right. "So, you need proof. I guess psychologists may give you the same answer, yet in a more... scientific manner."

"...and I've no idea how much, but," and I chuckled quietly since that idea sounded amusing to me, "a sphere is the, kind of, ideal shape in the world of physics. So, if anyone tells you that 'it's too much', you may bless them with that knowledge. You're pursuing the ideal shape, as ideal as it's physically possible phah."
05 Mar 2024, 1:02pm
“Finding proof would be… difficult. I cannot just… go up to a Thargoid and ask them, right now. Or they might not give me an answer. And I don’t know if I could understand them… it doesn’t have a Thargoid language handbook inside it.”

I sighed. Why couldn’t it ever be simpler than “Really fucked up and complicated”?

“And I was on a Titan, recently. I think I was told on the rescue ship. But I would have been unconscious, then, and not aware of it. So… maybe, it comes from the… first time. It seems like those nightmares about being inside a Thargoid ship, sometimes able to walk and breathe normally, other times barely aware of my body, in its… ‘smaller’ form, or between the two. If it’s the first, it… often ends with me getting chased and caught by one of them. The other two… when I pass out in that… ‘world’, either from a spot I can’t move while laid on something, above the ground, or when I try to go through a doorway and something makes me collapse from it. Then I wake up. But… those are different nightmares, from the one where I am connected to a ship.”

Now I could remember. I hadn’t told any psychologists about this, for certain, because… it just seemed too difficult. They weren’t close enough to me for my brain to get over its - very strong - reluctance to talk about things that bothered me. I shook my head.

“It feels like the world itself tries its best to stop me from doing what I would like to. Humans don’t want to talk, Thargoids don’t want to talk, but guns don’t solve the problem either. What are you supposed to do like this?”

I held my hands up to my head in a kind of ‘claw’ shape to signify my frustration further - if the tone hadn’t given it away - then took a few deep breaths when I moved them back to the knees, to calm myself.

“… I don’t think I would like to be a real ball. It was a fun thought… experiment, but it would just be too big.”
05 Mar 2024, 7:58pm
"You know, ancient people believed that what you see in your sleep means something... Trying to figure out, to decipher it, was even a profession, phah. Nah, I prefer a more straightforward and scientific approach," making a lighthearted little laughter, I accompanied the words about the scientific approach with a gesture that looked vaguely like I tried to compact, squeeze something with my both hands, or like making a snowball. "Brain tries to sort everything out, to organise the data, otherwise it might start losing the memories. Like, moving stuff from the recent, fresh memories into the storage. Like you do with memory sticks, uploading something from them onto the computer."

"Some of it might be important... For the brain. Not necessarily for us. Or just deeply etched. Or... Maybe it evokes some emotional response you can't figure out well because you're sleeping at the moment. And, those pictures are repeating. But then, you have a heckload of alien stuff in your body that normal humans don't have. So maybe it affects the sleep too, somehow... I've no idea honestly, I'm a pilot, not a neurologist, phah."

"And, uh...", making a long tired exhale, I looked somewhere to the side, unfocused, just, staring, "...the world doesn't like to make it plain and simple. Complicated shit follows another complicated shit."

"I'd like to be a kitten," I stated, after a couple of seconds of kicking the thoughts back and forth.
05 Mar 2024, 8:28pm
Part of my lower half hanging off the couch, when in this 'ball' position, was getting a little annoying. I tried to make myself more space by moving a pillow aside, and further squeezing into the back support, but that didn't really help much. So I answered instead.

"I think, it does affect my dreams... sometimes. As I said... nightmares happen when the voices are loud. And they seem to happen more often, then, when it is like that as I go to sleep. But there is little I can... do about it. They told me as much. Medication does not seem to affect it because it appears separate from brain impulses, and maybe it takes a lot more to knock the implant out. In a... gentle, way."

I took my arms off the knees and straightened my back out, moving it a little to relieve tension from the musculature. Then returned to being a - figurative - big ball. It was nice, and fun, to see other people react to me in this pose.

"If you want to be a kitten, I would rather not be your ball to play with."

I tried to add as much of a joking tone to that statement as I could, maybe to just get the serious subjects away from our little bubble here again.
05 Mar 2024, 9:36pm
"Weeee!" I exclaimed happily and pointed my finger at the Big Ball of Kasumi in front of me. Seeing that has made all the recent disagreements fade away. "You can't imagine how cute it looks, actually, phah."

"Regarding the nightmares...", I continued, gradually returning to the normal voice, "...have you tried the meds I gave you? Or told the doctors about that... pharmaceutical experiment? They have like two weeks of accumulative effect and might've been interfering with what Aegis gave you here, hence no effect in total."

"And the connection to the voices... This is interesting too. It might be a direct one, or... More like a response from your brain on the stress you're experiencing when that stuff is 'loud'. Argh. I'm no specialist anyway. Maybe you could... Write a private journal about what that stuff tries to 'tell' you, so it won't fade in memory, maybe you could figure something out that way."
05 Mar 2024, 10:37pm
“I would still like to have more space, when sat like this. Maybe I need a bigger… deeper? Couch. And I don’t… really imagine how it looks. This, pose, I mean.”

I stretched both arms and legs out to their limits, giving off a quite satisfied sound, then lazily curled up again.

“I don’t remember any meds you gave me. Or the bottle was already empty, and I threw it away. I don’t know. It could also have gotten lost in a drawer, and I just did not find it.”

I rolled my neck to finish off the stretching and muscle relief show.

“I think, the voices are… not something I can ‘understand’. They did not give me an understanding of their… language, I guess. So I can maybe interpret the basic intent behind it, for now. But I would probably have to learn how they speak like everyone else, if we ever understand it.”
06 Mar 2024, 1:25am
"Ah," I shook my head and waved a hand in front of it, "Sorry, I forgot. Yeah, I gave you some of my meds earlier, they're meant to help with nightmares and make getting to sleep easier in general, since it has been... was. My problem for ages."

"You may try interpreting the voices. Like, retelling it. Imagine describing it to someone in our, human, words, but you write them down instead. Who knows, maybe there has been some sense all the time."

I paused for a moment, looking at Kasumi and thinking, or more like trying to encompass in one large picture, what kind of stuff she's been going through. And, it would've been really easier if everything was explainable.

"...That's might be hard, to know something, but be unable to explain it, because there are no proper words in all the languages we, humans, speak."
06 Mar 2024, 1:42am
“I think, Seo is better at the… figuring out the greater purpose thing. While my connection works more like… I could tell you where the Thargoids might attack or scout a system tomorrow. But I catch glimpses of what she does, too, just… later, usually. Unless the impulse or… ‘song’ is strong enough.”

I paused for a moment. The word ‘song’ would likely need an explanation.

“Alba and other researchers apparently helped Seo by coming to the idea of describing the things she ‘hears’ as… music. Melodies, instruments… and I think it is a good idea, too. Works well, to describe basic intent. But it is still difficult to figure some of it out, sometimes. Maybe because of how my connection works differently. But, to use an example… I would have described when the Titans were coming to the Bubble, as… ‘war drums’. To gather the Thargoids around them for this conflict.”

I took a deep breath, trying to stay relaxed, not stress my brain on it too much.

“And maybe I do still have those meds around… somewhere. But I don’t think I was using them, right now. I would… probably, remember.”

‘But just probably.’, I added in my thoughts. ‘Stupid brain.’
06 Mar 2024, 2:05am
"Yeah, and I'm no great thinker either, phah," I made an ironical grin and shrugged with my arms spread. "But, that's... Mental reconnaissance, phah. You grab the data and bring it to those who can't do it, but can think better than you do."

"And hey, that's a great way to describe it, actually, like... A music, a song," I nodded, "That's a parallel to another therapy stuff, but sometimes, if you can't explain something, describe it, so that other people might understand it better, you... Make those metaphors. Analogies. And it could further help with more precise work."

"But make sure to have a word with the doctor about the meds. That's a, kind of, tranquiliser. Not that powerful to shut you down immediately and it's slow, but it's designed to help with sleeping. That was one big bloody heck of a problem before I... Well, you know," and the last words were accompanied with a silly half-grin half-smile.
06 Mar 2024, 2:51am
“So your… changes… help with sleeping? How?”

Me asking that question was, kind of inevitable, after that was brought up.

“And I will ask a doctor about it, then. To see what they say. But I have only taken what Aegis has given me so far. And …”

I pointed in the direction of the ‘island’ which also served as a sort of elevated table to eat on, and cooking spot. An injector pen lay there.

“These. Something I seem to have personally made. A… stimulating mixture in case I feel bad because of the implant, or something else is wrong that could be really bad. I usually have one in every place I go to, or on myself, for emergencies. Also painkillers, if the headaches are too bad.”

I breathed again.

“I try to be better at using the music… ‘analogy’ for the things I hear from the hivemind. It is easy, sometimes, to describe things. Like when they plan to attack something, I can feel… the song turning into something more… oriented, sometimes ‘angry’ or like a melody which sounds… determined to attack, maybe. Other times, it is cautious. But I don’t know if they are aware that we might be able to attack Titans soon.”
06 Mar 2024, 2:57am
"Neural enhancement stuff that's all over my brain now," I made a few vague circles in the air around my head, "It balances the biochemistry and suppresses nightmares. Don't have that godsdamned serotonin shortage now... At last, phah."

"And yeah," I nodded towards the injector. "I remember giving you one of these... Or similar... Can't remember too. Certainly gave you a shot from my combat suit stuff when things got rough back then on that Silvia operation. Mine were standard though. But it seemed to help."

"Sooo... You say, you can get the general 'mood' of that 'song', but no exact information?"
