Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

“Yeah, I guess, in that case I probably should go over there. Only people I know of that I’d trust with the stuff you might be able to pull from a Titan is Aegis. And hell, if they start to become resistant to torpedoes, we might need alternatives. Something in that wreckage might be useful for thay, too.”

I paused for a second.

“… what am I saying, might. We will need an alternative if that happens, unless the Thargoids decide to put an end to this shitshow and stop pushing into human space. Kinda doubt that’s going to happen though, so, yeah. You guess.”

I sighed, and returned to the co-pilot’s seat for now.

“I don’t know about Kasumi, to be honest. Not for sure. I’d like to think she won’t take that thing with the Titans personally for too long. Not exactly like they’ve given us much of a choice so far. But she’s probably seen that wreck for herself already, and I don’t think it’ll have made her feel any better about it. Still, I get the impression she isn’t the kind to start thinking about going to the other side because of this. Or to drop a friendship because people are not sitting there taking it. But I guess we’ll both see.”

“… that aside, it’s still a bit odd to stand next to someone sitting and be face to face anyway. No offense.”
16 Mar 2024, 1:34am
"We can only hope," letting out a long-drawn sigh, I shrugged, turned my head to the cockpit canopy and let my arms hang freely, hands touching the floor, in quite a tired manner. "Everything that works is good. Currently, we have torpedoes. We will use them again because there's no other option. What could happen next... Will happen next."

"And the same about our friend Kas," I looked at Jana, "I've no idea what her decision might be. I'd rather let time sort things out. I hope we still have enough of it, and it's the best at sorting things out in a proper way, honestly."

Getting to the last comment, I smiled lightheartedly.

"Well, can't say we're absolutely face to face when I'm sitting right on the floor, but, this way...", pressing both hands against the floor, I lifted my body a little and it was enough to tuck the legs underneath myself, and sit that way. Shuffling left and right for a second, I got comfortable and continued. "Yep, this is it, I guess. Maybe I should keep it as a 'standard talking to people in an informal atmosphere blah-blah-blah pose', phah. Only have to make sure the floor is clean."

"War sucks", after a bit of silence, I stated.
16 Mar 2024, 2:06am
“Maybe it does, but they usually also end eventually. I guess we’ll know soon enough if this one is about to or it’ll just get worse from here.”

The image of the Taranis wreck floated around in my mind. It would’ve been a lie to say I didn’t have a bit of an uneasy feeling at it all.

“And my comment about the ‘face to face level’ was… well, you probably guessed it was just a bit of a tease, but I won’t lie. Takes just a bit of getting used to.” I paused a second. “So, do you like, have more brainpower available now, with there being more space?”

I symbolically tapped on my head once or twice.

“Anyway, yeah, I guess time is just something Kasumi needs. Like I said, to sort out those feelings or whatever. Hopefully, she’ll remember or know what the Thargoids did last time, though. Even if it resulted in her being like …”

I drew - very - exaggerated curves around my body, maybe to add a bit of levity into the answer. Of course, those imaginary curves completely exceeded the seat, and I couldn’t quite stop a suppressed laugh from coming out, with one hand in front of the mouth, at that idea.
16 Mar 2024, 7:02am
Hearing about 'things getting worse' had made me chuckle ironically, slightly turning my head to the side and covering my face with a hand.

"Things always can find a way to get worse, if not with the war, then with something else."

Figuring out that my fingers are actually resting on my forehead, I tapped it a few times.

"That's... Armour, phah. Neanderthals had brains, like, fifteen percent larger than ours. But I don't see them building a ship to get us to another galaxy," then, I remembered an old joke regarding my own body build, relatively heavy bone structure and a general lack of subtlety. "...Maybe I should be the first, one day."

"That's an old running joke," I clarified. "From school years or so. Some idiots thought I'm a neanderthal. Okay, let it be that way, next time we were outside, I picked up a big stick, waved it over my head a few times and ran after them, shouting some rubbish. Not because I was upset, just... For a weird kind of fun."
16 Mar 2024, 11:56am
“Yeah, I don’t see us building a ship to get to another galaxy any time soon either. And I think we might want to learn how to live with our existing space neighbors before we go into I don’t know, the satellite galaxies of ours or even Andromeda. Especially if there’s Thargoids there too already, by the time we arrive. Or other locals.”

“… not that it’d be much of a concern for either of us two. We’d probably have turned into space dust a long time before that happens. Unless that technology weirdness with those progenitor thingies also made you immortal or some such funny thing.”

I thought about that for a moment.

“Well, I guess, if you do live longer you might get to see exactly what the long-term effects of this madness we’re going through are. Me, knowing my luck? Probably just born at the right time to watch it happen live but not to see anything good come of it, like both our species realizing bashing each other’s heads in repeatedly is no way to exist.”

I scoffed slightly.

“Yeah, anyway. I sometimes ask myself how far we’ve really come from our cave man days. Or cave people, whatever. You’d probably trigger someone these days by saying ‘cave man’ even if the ‘man’ in that refers to ‘human’ as a species and not the male… whatever. You probably know what I mean, since we’re still just as busy knocking ourselves over the heads even with an alien invasion going on. Sticks with a pointy end and rocks just turned into hyper-velocity railguns and plasma projectiles.”

Sometimes, seeing human nature at work like that just made me sad. Especially when a much more advanced society somehow managed to exacerbate those aspects to the point of feeling like a ridiculous caricature or satire, instead of cutting down on them or keeping it at a manageable level, not weekly wars breaking out everywhere.
16 Mar 2024, 12:26pm
Jana's words about 'technology weirdness' that could 'make people immortal' had made me raise my eyebrow ironically for a second.

"Phah, no idea. Like, our old friend Salivation had made it to somewhat around two hundred. But, on the other hand... He's an absolute headcase. However, something tells me...", I narrowed my eyes like a cartoonish spy, "...he has been like that from the very start."

"But, anyway. The more I learn history, the more I understand that literally every century has some crap going on, and not once oftenly. The longer you live, the higher your chances to see some real shit, and you'd better be in a, to say, functional age when it happens. To do something, not to be tossed around like a piece of meat rubbish."

"And that human nature, to constantly fight over something... Pfffff."

I made a deep exhale, relaxing my arms and shoulders, looked around slowly, spending a few seconds in silence, then turned my eyes to Jana and continued, sounding more lively, in short sentences.

"You know what? That's why I'm here. In AXDF. I was, kind of, a rebel mercenary before. Absolutely different life. Haven't even thought about how hot I'd look in a uniform, phah. I was jumping around, picking fights, supporting independent folks here and there. Helping them to throw corpos and enforcers away from their front doors. Worked alone, oftenly without even leaving the ship. But then..."

I slowed down and my gaze drifted to the side slowly.

"...Then I figured out I don't want to go anywhere. Those squabbles are pointless and everyone fucks up eventually. I helped one group, I left, then I visit them a month after and their hands are on the throat of a smaller faction. Good leaders turn into arseholes I'd rather shoot myself. A constant, neverending whirlwind of shit."

"Sooo... I ended up here. Humankind is a bunch of greedy power-hungry egoistic arseholes, but they deserve a chance to build a better society. And there will be no society and no humankind at all if the bugs win that thing."
16 Mar 2024, 4:32pm
“Well, hopefully this thing’s gonna end well then. I’d rather not have defending our space by blowing those Titans to shreds… mostly to shreds, work out badly. And on that note, what do you think the chances are they’ll bother rebuilding that wreck? If they’re not just going to salvage it themselves and move on.”

‘Which will become obvious in the next few days.’, I added in thoughts.

“And Salvation… one sec.”

I quickly looked up some information about the mad bastard - a bastard in a bad way, unfortunately - on a wrist-portable computer, which I got after seeing one used by Kasumi, thinking that it was actually quite a neat thing to have instead of a datapad.

“So, yeah, like I thought. And you said, I guess. Idiot was already a nutjob and moron however long ago that first war was. Century and a half, two centuries? I dunno. People seem to be conflicted on the dates. But some old logs of an INRA facility where that idiot worked make you think he already lost it back then. With all that ‘Saving humanity at all costs’ bullshit and how mycoid is only a temporary solution, he needs to be alive to rid us of the Thargoid ‘plague’ or whatever permanently, he is/must be our Salvation, blah blah.”

To say that my tone was mocking would have been one of the century’s understatements.

“I don’t remember anyone needing saving from the Thargoids, especially not the whole species, until people started pulling triggers nilly willy because they got red fog in their eyes at the sight of anything non-human and made them do the same, to the point of causing an invasion of our space. I say, we should dump those types right out in Thargoid home space - wherever that is - with a megaship or two, and see how long they last out there. We’ll be rid of the problem then, and I don’t think anyone sane will miss the ‘Kill all bugs’ people. They’d just invite even worse in on us eventually. Unless you think otherwise?”

The end of my rant-ish monologue was accompanied with a more asking tone and, following that question, a raised eyebrow.
17 Mar 2024, 1:18am
"Hmph," I shrugged in an ironic manner, then turning my both palms up, "See, that idiot has always been like that. And I doubt there are any of his... Writings, memoires, whatever, that could give us more understanding about what made him such a dick."

"As far as I know from history... The first Thargoid War was nowhere near the hellscape shit we have now. Maybe a bit more than clashes on border territories like we had in the Pleiades, Witch Head and Coalsack... Anyway, what makes them like nebulae so much, does it resemble their own goop-clouds to them?... Ah, nevermind. So, I've no idea what had made that guy so mad."

"Others, look...", I paused for a little while, tapping my index fingers, with my gaze wandering side to side. "It is extremely easy to overgeneralise your enemy if it is so alien, like the Thargoids. And many people are already blinded by the war. Deafened by pain, loss and grief. So..."

I looked at Jana directly.

"Those people are touched by the war. Their lives would never be the same. Many of them. But, give it a few more years, and many of them would stop being so angry."

"Of course that doesn't cover the absolutely nutjob xenophobes who would kill anything that isn't human, that isn't Earth-born, that isn't like them or blah blah blah. That primitive, as you said, 'cave man' bigotry behaviour, to be aggressive to anything that's different. Sadly, it runs for millennia. They are against everything that doesn't look like they do."

“I wasn’t referring to the people that are just mad at the Thargoids or don’t like them because of this invasion, alright? Most of them probably have enough common sense to not call for outright extermination because of a war. Or I’d hope so, anyway. Only meant those xenophobic nutjobs, you know, the ones that think Salvation is some kinda idol to be imitated or something. Not sure many people would miss them.”

I shrugged.

“They’re probably not going anywhere anyway, like you said. But sure hope we can manage to ignore them from now, or, for whatever follows after this war. Their opinions are… really not worth being listened to, I’d say.”

“But anyway. I can’t say I know how accurate the information is, but some people say those creepy Thargoid sites that are all over the place near the Pleiades are, like, old ‘motherships’ from the first war. Something about mycoid presence that made them crash on those moons and scanners can still detect it even now. I couldn’t find anything like that when I was at one when Aegis still asked for that weird hybrid relic to get the pulse neutralizer to visit Titans, though. Still, have to admit, they look kinda similar to one, just a lot smaller.”

I shrugged for a second time.

“It doesn’t sound much like a border war to me if there’s over two-hundred of those things dead and scattered around, but it’s too far in the past to really feel relevant to me. Or matter that much, I think. And a lot of that history got lost because of the way the government of the time and INRA fell apart, or hid their research. Apparently the Alliance has a lot of those old documents, but they’re clearly not telling anyone if they do.”

“… would’ve maybe been really helpful if they did, though. If just to compare Thargoid tactics and stuff from back then to now.”
17 Mar 2024, 2:47am
"Gah, I guess, this war has done something to me too," stretching my lips in a reluctant acknowledgment, I turned my head to the pilot seat. "Being in the thick of it every moment of not being in the hospital put together from pieces might be... A bit too intensive for any person to bear."

"And, as far as I understand, those downed motherships, or whatever they are, were the result of the mycoid, which spread across their species without any additional human... Control, to say. So we didn't shoot those ships down directly. We didn't have any means to, I think."

"Motherships... Mothers... Hey, that really looks gruesome now, being shot at because you visited your mother's grave, phah," making a few sarcastic giggles, I continued. "Humanisation of an alien enemy does interesting things sometimes."

"But, anyway. I doubt we could apply those old things to our present day reality in full. Human ships didn't have FSDs back then, spending days in jumps and in-system sub-light travels. Thargoid tactics of fighting us might've changed over time too. Yeah, they still have some major fundamentals everyone knows about, like seeding the planets with barnacles as for claiming the territories, but the fights have changed."
17 Mar 2024, 3:37am
“Back then? Yeah, I don’t think there was any way we could’ve shot even something a quarter the size of a Titan down. And we didn’t exactly know about the Guardians existing yet. Maybe there’s an old INRA facility out there where they tested weapons and I think one of those big ships showed up over there. Don’t remember exactly, been over a year since I looked into Thargoids and what we knew, because, you know.”

I pointed upward, to space. ‘The invasion’.

“Still, if accurate, the fact that it’s a messed up ruin with old caustic remnants all over it says enough about that particular test. Our own weapons are just as worthless against Titans… not even sure anything other than sabotaging them to get their heat cores exposed would actually be good enough to do it. Like, yeah, those Guardian guns we’ve got aren’t bad at the job, but they start to show their limits against a Hydra already. Titans?”

I made a few funny movements with my mouth to signify that I wasn’t sure there.”

“Well, probably wouldn’t even really need the anti-Guardian field if it came down to shooting them with those guns, conventionally. Would like to know what kind of regenerative armor plating those things got, but maybe that’d be difficult to slap on our ships anyway. And they might smell pretty bad if we do.”

I made a bit of an amused sound at the idea.

“Imagine that. Your decorated hero flies home in his ship but because it’s got experimental armor plating made from Titan bits, the crowd that would be waiting as he leaves it, walks away from the stench.”

I paused for a few seconds, then sighed.

“You know… I’d like to help with the attack on Oya directly somehow, when it comes to that time, but I’m not sure I could live with myself, knowing how they end. Really wish we had a cleaner way of doing that.”
17 Mar 2024, 10:54am
"Yeah, as much as I like to go straightforward and shoot bastards in the face, that doesn't work with Thargoids...", I sighed, spreading my arms slightly. "They regenerate faster and sometimes I think they even break laws of physics and chemistry known to us."

"...Or maybe I need a bigger gun, phah."

"Anyway," pointing a finger up into the air, I indicated an idea. "You're about to go and see what's left of the Taranis, right? Don't forget to take some pics, phah, could net you some little sweet side profit."

"But make sure not to show them to Kas," a quiet, and pretty obvious, comment. "I guess she's really on edge at the moment."

"And, speaking of how they end... People, melted alive in that goop, weren't feeling any better, I'd say. This is war, and wars are ugly, always. If it's the only weapon available to bring them down, then, we'll be using it. Until the end, or until a more effective one arrives. Effective, not," and I made a pair of air quotes, "'humane', since what they do to us isn't humane either. But, yeah, give me a big cannon that annihilates them immediately, and the next day..." I nodded to the side, where the landing pads were. "Next day you'll see ten wings armed with these. Maybe even more, counting the locals."
17 Mar 2024, 2:33pm
“I might go look around there, yeah. Still on a bit of a break from helping fight off invading Thargoids in populated systems. But not a ‘war tourist’, so I won’t be taking any pictures of a dead Titan over there. If someone wants their big game trophy shot or some nonsense like that, that’s their business. One I’m not going to participate in.”

I shrugged.

“The Pilot’s Federation throws way too much money at people who are defending against the invasion anyway. Just a year ago I was doing fine with, I don’t know, probably on average around 50 million. Now I’ve got ten times that and like, three billion in bond payouts I’m not bothering to hand in because, what the hell am I supposed to do with all that money? I guess, I could give it to charity or something.”

I raised my hands in the air to show how clueless I was about it.

“You know where to ask if you need funds for something, I suppose. As long as it isn’t a capital ship, I’d have to save up some more to help fund one of those.”

I sighed, then, trying to think of… something, adequate to say, about that final thing. And it just looped around to the same point ehich’d come up before.

“Yep, war just sucks. Whyever people that deliberately want to cause it exist?”

There was no good answer to that question, I already knew. Other than ‘Something doesn’t work right in their brains, and not in a good way’, as I was referring to the types of Salvation, rather than scuffles that happened over territory. Those were of course still not good, but usually not deliberately instigated. I hoped.

My lips stretched in what, at the first glance, might've been looking like a happy smile of a person that's about to say something really bright. Yet, narrowed eyes and a raised eyebrow gave away a malicious intent.

"Because humankind is a bunch of arseholes!", sounded in the false-sweet voice.

"...But stuff is getting better, little by little," I get back to the normal voice, without any tricks, "At that moment, we're in a far better place than a thousand years ago. Not to mention two. War? There's always a war somewhere."

"Don't think that, in an ideal world with ideal humans in it, wars don't exist. Humans may stop being arseholes... But maybe there's a bunch of arseholes living somewhere in...", my gaze wandered around for a little, then I pointed a finger up into the air, "...to say, in Andromeda. We're, like, explorers, looking at stuff, not breaking anything, not invading anything, all that nice and sweet, and then - blam! boom! ka-blam!"

Spreading my fingers quickly three times, I depicted a few explosions, fatal for our theoretical Andromeda expedition team.

"So, ideal humans try to talk, all that, but that doesn't work with arseholes, they keep blowing up our stuff for no reason except them being arseholes. What to do? Turn tail and whine? Stop going to Andromeda and go look somewhere else? Of-damn-course not, there's an ideal army of ideal humans that's ready to absolutely delete anyone who tries to do that kind of shit."

"Yeah... Humans are mostly arseholes. But not the only arseholes in the Universe, veeeery much likely."
17 Mar 2024, 5:16pm
“Yeah, I guess, maybe there’d be idiots in another species too. But it’s easier to bitch about your own than another, isn’t it?”

At least, for me it was.

“Doesn’t mean you hate every human to ever exist, but you can probably guess that I’d lie a lot if I said I didn’t have issues. Mostly the kind that results from unreasonable expectations to ‘conform to standards’ instead of ‘being yourself’ all that nonsense. I’m sure you know it well, too, considering… well, what I’m looking at.”

I shrugged.

“Best thing to do there is to ignore them and carry on with your life, I guess. If they’re not trying to make it a living hell because god forbid humans are different from some arbitrary pre-defined standard.”

That second sentence came out in quite a mocking tone.

“‘How to define my life story’ in a dozen or so words. I should write a book.”

Which wasn’t a serious suggestion, of course.
