Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

“Yeah, can imagine those standard scales aren’t quite enough for… whatever this can be called. Sure as hell couldn’t be much further from the average human body. Or even the usual non-average on the heavier side. Heavier in a good way, that is.”

I paused for a short moment.

“How did the doc react to that, anyway? And Kas… pff, yeah, can understand why she wouldn’t be too happy to answer questions about the weight. At most she was probably around 70 before, not… whatever all those extras make it be now. I just know I wouldn’t want to be in her way if she ever loses balance with all of that mass.”

“And I wasn’t saying anything about you that way, but just some random other person. Might’ve been a little too much even for me.”
21 Mar 2024, 2:49pm
"Ah, of course it shocked everyone, phah. But, in the end, people are glad to see me back and better than ever," stretching my arm out towards the side where the landing pads were, I indicated that by 'people' I meant everyone I serve with. Not that I'm seen outside of the camp too often anyway. "That's a huge morale boost. Especially when I'm not simply a person who gives orders but also cares about the... um, 'human side' of those people. I kick arse a lot, too."

"Maybe I can, actually, call this place my home. Even if it's a military base. People like to see me around here... And, phah, it seems like every place I could call 'home' is, or has a military installation right next to it. I've no idea why," grinning wackily, I shrugged, spreading my arms a little. "But it feels good to have one."
21 Mar 2024, 4:54pm
“I was more just, thinking about ‘How did the doctor react when the scale snapped’.”, I replied to that.

“And my home’s full of Thargoids right now but I guess maybe not for too much longer. Hopefully, anyway, since it looks like it’s up next after that Leigong Titan. Why did they pick those weird names for them, anyway?”

Didn’t expect her to know that, of course. Beyond the obvious ‘It’s easier to keep track of the individual ones that way’ thing.
21 Mar 2024, 5:04pm
"He was... Mildly confused, phah, but nothing too bad," I waved my hand lightheartedly, giving away a little giggling. "I've always been a bit heavier than you would expect, kind of, heavy bone structure and whatever... I'm a neanderthal, that's okay for us, like, totally normal, phah."

"In the end, that was even a little... Comedic. Even back in the Aegis clinic, I woke up on three beds put side to side, with their side panels removed, to make a big flat surface. Not to mention they have some gravity going on there."

"And... That mythology behind the Titan names... I guess it's better than T-01, T-02, etc. for, to say... Wider audience. Ooooh so meeeenacing, phah."

"I hope one day we'll kick them out of the system where the town was... Is... I've no idea. Hope they aren't too emotional, to lash out on empty buildings after we left the place. We... I mean, my AXDF group, we can establish a base literally anywhere, but the town was nice, actually. I like places like that. Not a complete middle of nowhere, but not too crowded."
21 Mar 2024, 6:13pm
“Maybe they’ll just leave when the Titans are gone. Wouldn’t be too surprised if that was the case, but I don’t really know where that town is or if there’d be any connection between the two.”

A thought occurred to me.

“You could always try to bring Kasumi along and see if she can… ‘convince’ those new locals to go away without needing to push them out. Just keep her out of the firing line if you try that and things don’t go as you expect. Or if they go exactly as you think they would.”

I shrugged.

“No Thargoid expert on why they do things the way they do. Or if they shoot at abandoned structures, but maybe they don’t. They’ve so far been so nice to leave our stuff in enough pieces to rebuild it around here, anyway.”

“But, that aside… hell, can’t imagine the reactions of the docs when they measured and weighed Kasumi after she was done getting totally oversized like that. Or what they thought when her breasts just started to get bigger randomly. Sounded like it wasn’t just a ‘One and done’ in a day deal, anyway.”
21 Mar 2024, 7:34pm
"Yeah," I nodded. "She told me it happened gradually over a couple of days... Nights, to be more correct. Imagine waking up and discovering your underwear doesn't fit you, phah. Was a bit easier in my case, I just woke up and thought, like, oh, that's odd, I'm in a hospital but I feel fine... All that."

"And I highly doubt she'd want to... Expose some of her abilities in front of a bunch of people so angry at the bugs. Also, yeah...", a memory of my own speech before the last take off flashed behind my eyes. "During the evacuation, I said that, when we return, some arse is going to be kicked, for sure. And I'm a woman of my word. If they're still there of course."
21 Mar 2024, 8:14pm
“Well, in that case, do whatever you think needs to be done. If they don’t just leave or insist on getting angry at local humans, if they have nothing there to be angry about… maybe then you can only fault them.”

I shrugged. Thargoid diplomacy so far only consisted of guns, so I had little illusions about how it would go if they kept pestering humans in that system or didn’t leave. But it was probably far enough from the Bubble to have no particular relevance to me unless I helped retake the place.

“And it must’ve been interesting to go through that for her. That whole experience… I’d say, not something you experience every day. But something tells me she didn’t quite mind even that stage.”
21 Mar 2024, 9:25pm
"Yeah, those folks are angry... I only hope...", I turned my head to the cockpit canopy, as if trying to look at the refugee camp. "So, I only hope they'd be able to wait until the Titan story is over. That way, we could help them."

"They know how to fight, we train them, and some of them join us as recruits later. But they lack that military order and, honestly, many of their ships are meh. But, it's easy to understand: you'd rather fight, knowing you may die, for what's truly yours, not for a no-name random Cox Ring Station or whatever."

"And, yep. For Kas... That definitely must've been an interesting process. Really, a process. Not waking up a different person. That day... I guess I let out my monthly share of expletives."
21 Mar 2024, 9:42pm
“I think they’ll understand. Who knows, maybe we’ll get something done with the Thargoids after this stupid mess with the Titans is over, that isn’t shooting them in the face. But… maybe I’m too cynical about it, but I don’t believe violence will really impress them much. Or at least not to where it’d make them want to talk, or do more than retreat. That’s, if they even do.”

I shrugged.

“How this madness ends is really up in the air, I guess. Can just hope that it won’t end up completely backfiring on us.”

“And I can imagine you weren’t swearing in the ‘What the fuck’ way. Or, at least, not badly. And since you mentioned it earlier… I don’t think Kas would’ve appreciated it if your positions were inverted either.”
22 Mar 2024, 7:55am
"I hope so", I replied on a tired exhale. "This thing is getting too long. And too bloody. There's always someone to shoot them in the face, human, Thargoid, whatever, such is the nature of sentient beings, some individuals are just plain arseholes that don't understand words... But... You know."

I tilted my head and looked at Jana, and then nodded towards the side where the landing pads were.

"Individuals. Not the entire species. Or almost. I saw battles, conflicts, wars. Over anything a person could possibly imagine. But this one is hell. With no meaning behind it, other than destruction for the sake of it. A blood rage, that's for sure."

"Uhhhh... This is sick," I couldn't help but let out another tired exhale, got up from the floor and walked to the main piloting console, where I stood silently for a few seconds, looking outside. Tech crews surrounded the damaged Chieftain, working quickly and flawlessly, like a well-oiled balanced mechanism, filling the breaches with the quick-repair sealing compound and replacing the damaged cooling circuit parts, so that the ship could take off again soon and return to its wing, to resume the patrol. And all necessary spare parts will be waiting already by the time this pilot's shift ends. I knew the system. I, personally, contributed to honing its functions, more than a year ago.

"Seeing people doing their job so well gives... Confidence. That's what you really want to look at in the time of chaos," vocalising my thoughts quietly, I took another can of tea from the supplies locker, opened it with a familiar 'pop' and lit up a cigarette.

Getting back to Jana and the conversation, I stopped next to the air vents, activated them and leaned on the cockpit side wall, inhaling another portion of vanilla-flavoured smoke.

"...And I did swear 'what the fuck'. That's me! Phah. But, yeah, in the positive sense of 'what the fuck'. It was, kind of... Surprising. To wake up and figure out you're now the ideal version of yourself. Even if it's so wacky and socially inappropriate. But, hey, I've been lost for those societal standards for a long time already. Can't say I fit them from the very beginning, in the first place."

“I couldn’t imagine you in any other way. Even if we don’t know each other that well, personally.”, I replied, shrugging.

“I guess I might be a little closer to that ‘stereotypical image’, but… yeah, I don’t think I’d have my body like yours. Or, rather, wouldn’t want to. I prefer to have a more thin build, so to speak.”

“And hell, if I’d woken up suddenly in my… ‘ideal’ body form, I think I’d have had a few swear words for it too! Pfff.”

I had to stop an outburst of giggling.

“Oh, it’s still so stupid. And to think that this happened to Kas because of her exploring that weird stuff in our VR experiment. Even if she ended up completely overdoing it in this real side of the world.”

Better to talk about than the stupid war going on outside. But I still wanted to close it off as a subject.

“But, yeah, to get that war thing out of the way… it really is just a really shitty madness. I could’ve understood if we had occasional… ‘disagreements’ over territory or resources because, let’s be honest, we do the same as humans. But this? It’s just totally bullshit. And I think we should just leave it at that. While hoping it ends soon, of course.”
22 Mar 2024, 6:20pm
"...And I agree," slowly nodding, I let a long stream of smoke out in the direction of the air vent intake. Microscopic particles formed an intricate pattern of waves and curls in their sophisticated dance, which lasted only a second, until the air flow picked them up and carried them away into the metal depths of the ship. "This is utter bloody godsdamned bullshit. Conflicts are natural and understandable. Genocidal wars aren't."

Tobacco smoke had no actual effect on me now, and it also lacked anything practically useful, but, maybe due to a pure, almost two decades long, behavioural pattern, the process of smoking itself felt... Relaxing.

"Maybe we are still some stereotypical images. But, of other stereotypes. Less popular ones. There are billions of people, humans, out there, it's hard to believe that everyone's so unique."

The flavour of the tea felt different while smoking, yet, somehow, those two complemented each other, instead of spoiling. I spent a couple of seconds in silence, taking a long, slow sip from the tea can.

"Even Kas, and her... And yours too... 'Thing'. Like, the modification for the VR was there, available for the downloading, already. That means, someone had created it, spent some time tinkering with the models and neural response algorithm to make that stuff feel natural. And, that means, there's a popular image of someone being... Like Kas now."
23 Mar 2024, 12:13am
“And I find it even less believable that humans get so super focused on ‘averages’ and ‘needing to belong’ then” Both of those ideas were accompanied by air quotes. “instead of them being themselves.”

“Though you can’t tell me that a figure like hers would be a popular shape to want. Even if, I’m sure, it would make her popular to be looked at.”

Timeline: 04 March 3310, shortly after the destruction of the Taranis

"Yeah, and that's the paradox, kind of," I shrugged, letting out another stream of tobacco smoke. "Of course there are some prevalent archetypal groups, of people who tend to... You know, be a close match to what they call a 'standard', so the society itself has some predefined places for those different archetypes of people... The Typical A, The Typical B, The Typical C and whatever...", counting with my fingers, I followed the flow of my thoughts.

"So that... System, to say, is balanced enough for all those folks to live and interact somehow, to contain some... Percentages of them."

"And then... Then you see a person who can't be described by any, to say, set of qualities common for a certain group. Even if they have something from those As, Bs or Cs, you can't really... You know, put a label on them. The society, en masse, doesn't know what to do with them. Those algorithms, of how people meet each other and make friends and couples, how they interact on their jobs and in their free time, what standard sets of interests they have to talk about and all that blah blah blah...", I made a few vague encompassing gestures in the air with my hands, "...All that fails miserably. So people simply... Don't know how to interact with that individual. And then there are arseholes who act aggressive, or, you know, at least think shit because those abstract individuals can kick some arse too. But, arseholes are numerous and they can simply form a mob. Schools are, you know, the best example."

"Pfffffff...", letting out a long exhale, I stared at nowhere in particular. At some point on the wall.

"That's too deep, too wide and too... Complicated. I don't think I'm a professional in that area. And, speaking of Kas and that weird kink of yours... It may not be that numerous and popular, but it's still a group of people, an abstract one again, with that particular interest."

“Well, I guess I got lucky that I happened to find someone who shared that ‘interest’ then.”

Couldn’t help but to grin a little.

“Even if she went a bit far beyond what I’d do with myself… you know, in that case. And can’t deny that I maybe like how it looks juuuust a little.”

“But yeah, I had to deal with some of that shit in my teenage years myself. Can’t say Imperials are all so upstanding and decent if you refuse to ‘be like them’. Especially in that backwards shithole I got stuck in for most of my life so far.”

I scratched my head, thinking.

“Can’t say I remember if I brought it up already. But basically, system at the edge of Imp space, maybe around six million people right now. Might’ve been less when I was born. Planet getting terraformed, building tourism industry, blah blah blah. Wasn’t even important enough for them to give it a name over that ancient HIP designator. And I got stuck in some isolated settlement, small town at best, that wouldn’t even have accepted visiting outsiders if it wasn’t some high Imperial creep, or the fact that they wouldn’t have had money to do shit without tourists.”

I shook my head.

“At least they had slightly better than shitty prefab buildings everywhere.”
