Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

“I think she has a good reason to make me go there. And would not if it was too dangerous, but… not annoying whatever is left there could be difficult. I read the drones will appear, even if you do not touch anything and only look around.”

I paused, thinking.

“Or do you mean something else? I was not going to damage the structures. Or try not to. But if they are a million years old, and still work without being looked after, I would not be able to anyway.”

At least I was able to focus on something that was not “Play with your big, oversized breast”… for now.
03 Mar 2024, 7:25pm
"Uh. I mean, the Thargoids. Even if the places have nothing to do with them directly, they may... I don't know. Listen somehow. See. You know...", I paused for a second, my eyes unfocused, "...through you."

"Guardian drones are easy if you see them as things you have to do self-defence against... Not millions of years old precious relics that somehow remained active and fully functional receiving no external input and no maintenance at all, buried under dust in extremely cold or extremely hot environments, of course."

And the last, longer part was said with a quite a sarcastic face, quickly, while also counting the fact with my fingers, like explaining something absolutely simple that nobody, for some reason, understood. Which was true.
03 Mar 2024, 7:49pm
“See… I think… they are not all here for us. Or, maybe… not just. And it might be because of… whatever goes on with the Guardians. You said you read what I published. So… what if they were somehow here to protect from something worse than us?”

The question partly held a dig at humanity’s terrible tendencies to pick fights not just with vastly superior alien species - on the technological, even if not tactical level - but also among themselves.

“But, the Thargoids might not get too upset if I am there. It seems like they do not go near those sites, except for… one time, last year. I found out they were actively looking around an old battle site between them and Guardians, but no one found out why, before they left.”

I breathed in.

“Anyway… the drones, I don’t think I would be happy to destroy them too much. Now that we talk of it… I vaguely remember feeling like it was …”

I paused, trying to focus on that fragment which had resurfaced.

“Like interfering with a grave site. Because they are extinct. Still, I think, if they were so precious or important, they would be a little smarter, and only be used when actually messing around with the site. They seem more like dumb robots, so… I can live with it. I try to remain respectful where I can.”
04 Mar 2024, 3:11am
"Exactly," and I slowly pointed my index finger upwards. "Guardian sites feel like tombs. Ancient tombs, untouched for thousands, maybe millions of years. I don't know what they are... were... originally, but now they absolutely fell like tombs."

"And then comes some Zachary Jameson-Duval, real name Joe Fartsmith, destroys the drones, breaks stuff, grabs broken pieces of stuff and leaves an empty beer can," a sarcastic shrug accompanied that description of the current state of things. "Okay, we need those ancient materials, but there are lots of Guardian ruins everywhere and they contain literal heckloads of that stuff. Just limit those... excavations to one."

"That reminds me of... You know, that ancient fuel on Earth, made of pressurised ancient organics. They were using it for two centuries or so. You can't get a new source so you have to care about what you have already, but before they... we... those people centuries ago, started to care, started to really think about any other types of fuel, they had to figure out their supplies are running low and the whole civilisation depends on dead dinosaurs."

"And, about... Why the Thargoids are here..." slowly, thinking as I spoke, I continued, "...You may be right, you know... Maybe not all of them are here to fight us. I believe they have factions... groups... clans... families, whatever... Of their own. Maybe it's the majority who fight, but not everyone. But I don't have any deep theories of my own creation, you know."

"They haven't tried communicating with us anyway," I shrugged, "so I doubt we're going to know if there are any other reasons."
04 Mar 2024, 3:47am
“We might find out, soon. But …”

I shuffled around on my hips slightly, to get tension out of my back muscles a little. Part of my mind being very consciously aware this had to look quite ‘interesting’ to an observer.

“We might find out. I am not sure if that will be a good thing. And I think they should have said something is coming. Instead of killing so many and driving many more away, from their homes. But they are so angry now, because of that… weapon.”
04 Mar 2024, 7:57am
"I'd totally like to... Teleport into the reality where that nutjob Salvation didn't exist. Framing the only group of people who did try to find a solution, Aegis, for the sake of his own ego, and then throwing the entire humankind into that hell. Just fucking brilliant." That phrase started more or less calmly but then descended into a definitively upset tone. "Dead or not, he certainly ran away from the responsibility seeing his magical device fucking up. Arsehole."

"And, imagining them... I mean, Thargoids... Communicating with us... I don't know. What might they say?.. On that... To say, stage of our inter-species contact, namely 'friggin bloody genocidal war', if they attempt to project their own 'superiority' in the vocal form as well... I think that stuff is only going to get even more bloody."
04 Mar 2024, 12:38pm
“Why do people always assume they will ‘demonstrate superiority’? If you don’t try, you will never know. They could just ask us to leave their colonies in the nebulas. But instead, we always just shoot. And never ask any questions.”

My tone had gotten bitter at the end of that statement, and with more than just a slight hint of annoyance present. Because it just made me really badly annoyed, especially the assumptions that the other side also only wanted war despite being the ones actively getting provoked into it.
04 Mar 2024, 2:25pm
"Well but they do exactly the same," I shrugged ironically, "they shoot instead of trying to talk. So I guess there are two shades of shit at play."

"And, you know, millions have died in that year... More than a year already. People have lost their families, their homes, people are now living in metal boxes, size a half of this room, and this isn't the worst option actually. Their lives are ruined by the war. Telling them that it all was for nothing, they told us to go away and we packed our shit and left the place, would be...", scowling, I shuffled through the available words to describe the situation, "...rather sub-optimal."

"Don't get me wrong... I don't want that war. I didn't want it in the first place. But the world simply doesn't ask me. Now, I want it to stop. But in a way that could make them regret attacking us as well. So, if they are, really, sentient, they'd rather find a way to smooth things over by communicating in case of any future accident, instead of going full genocidal mode and obliterating entire cities with people, most of which barely even know which side of a gun does pew pew. Imagine that: we, actually, tried to communicate. At least those nuts on a big ship, what was it called... But the Thargoids didn't."

"Pfffff...", I exhaled with a bit of desperation seeing this conversation going full speed ahead into a dead end, if not into a pitfall.

"I know people did shit to you and you hold no love for humankind in general. But why do we have to suffer, to give up, to be so submissive? What if they decide to harvest people, to advance into the systems we live in? To intercept our ships everywhere?"

"Uhhhh... I totally hate the point where we are now. Yet...", I dropped a short glance at the AXDF patch on my sleeve, "...the world doesn't ask me. The destruction, the murders shouldn't go unpunished. In human military history, murdering civilians, non-combatants, has always been a war crime."
04 Mar 2024, 3:34pm
I shook my head. Part of my point had gone right over this woman’s head.

“I did not mean the Bubble. I meant where we decided to go into places where the Thargoids had already put their things, and we stayed even when they showed they didn’t like it that we were stealing them, bringing them back to our space. Do you think it is really surprising they attacked, back then?”

I sighed.

“And maybe, we have killed many of their civilians too, often without a reason, in their own space. And they fired back in self-defense.”

‘Or whatever civilian means for a drone that is mostly a tool.’, I added in thoughts.

“I am not asking for people to leave their places here, in our space. It would be stupid. So please stop accusing me of it.”
04 Mar 2024, 4:53pm
I spread my arms and made a dramatical pause.

"And I saw them destroying our agricultural settlements. Do T-Goids need our turnip?"

"Anyway... Those years are long gone now and those were different Thargoids, but they did attack Guardians, thinking that the planets, the systems are 'theirs'. Ended up... Guess what. A bloody genocidal war."

"Pffff... You know, that's... Difficult. I think many would disagree with your idea of standing down and withdrawing. I disagree. Sometimes, wars are going for too long, and, or, being too brutal to remember why they had begun in the first place. This one is of this exact type. Too much blood spilled. It's not like two gangs of morons having a fight over a keg of stale beer lost on a nondescript frozen planet, night side, tidally locked, 320 years to sunrise."

Narrowing my eyes, I tried to recall the picture from my memory, as sharp as possible.

"Once, I saw a family. A mother and a child. They were travelling on a liner, I didn't know where exactly, but it was a passenger liner. Mother held her child by the hand, her other hand on the handrail. That's how I remembered them. The ship was sliced in half. Mother had a see-through hole in her chest, and her child, I guess, lived a couple of seconds longer, once they were sucked out into the vacuum."

"I'd like to keep living in a world where I don't need to adjust my moral compass in order to end the bastards who do that."
04 Mar 2024, 7:04pm
"Then I don't want to talk, if you won't listen. There is evidence, saying they only began to attack everything when we started to kill them all without a reason. And sometimes, there are Thargoid items where those dead 'civilian' ships are. And why would they put them there?"

I felt like my arguments were just being ignored instead of properly thought on, to push a personal narrative of why it's good to attack Thargoids. I crossed my arms and provided a matching expression on my face. As signs went, this one was pretty clear, and now being rather annoyed, instead of the 'defensive' mood I was in moments before, the glyph on my hand lit up orange.
04 Mar 2024, 8:50pm
Making a deep sigh, I slowly got up from the floor and looked at Kasumi.

"This shit sucks," that phrase itself was self-explanatory, complemented by a scowl. "Thargoids abduct and kill people, Azimuth abduct and experiment on people, cultists, fanatics, terrorists, friggin politicians, corporations making money off war and grief, and I'm here just trying to keep a bunch of people safe the simplest way possible, by shooting bastards who try to shoot at them, in the face. And I need neither money nor laurels, I'm simply a part of the larger force. Which I joined a long time ago, believing they do the right thing, and now I belong to it."

"Uh... Just, what I see being the right thing to do. Essentially, we all do the same, but... That 'right' is personal."

A bitter smile appeared on my face as I placed my right hand on my chest in sign of sincerity.

"Thank you for willing to meet me. And I wish you the best on your journey, as well as with your recovery. I don't want to burden you any longer today, it seems like our views are not just different, but opposite. And I remember that you like to be alone in quietness."

Utterly failing at making the bitter smile at least a little more positive, I shrugged slightly and walked to the door.

"No! Don't leave. Please."

Considering how confrontational I'd been just a moment ago, that outcry was oddly passionate.

"I don't mean it is wrong to fight Thargoids to defend others. But you view things too simply. Viewing things so simply will not help end the war."

The statement was more meant to be an invitation than anything else. I pulled my legs up and turned sideways on the couch as well as I could, curling back up into a ball. As I'd wanted to already... a few minutes ago. But now the reason was different to it being a 'defensive' posture.

"I don't want to be alone right now. It is not quiet."

I remained silent for a moment, speaking up again in a lower, partly desperate, partly resigned, tone.

"... it never is quiet any more."
04 Mar 2024, 10:09pm
"Ow," I stopped and turned around.

"Shhhiiiit...", replying in an almost whispering tone, I got back to the place where I sat a moment ago, maybe a little bit closer to the couch now, and, leaning forward, asked. "Is it... that bad now? What happened?"

"Why that stuff just can't leave you alone...", I muttered quietly, as an 'open question to the Universe'.
04 Mar 2024, 10:25pm
“No… no, it’s …”

I lowered my head, keeping my eyes closed.

“The noise is always there. I can’t shut it out. It… gives me nightmares. Bad dreams.”

Something about being left alone like this in the middle of a disagreement had triggered… an indescribable feeling. I wasn’t even sure where it was from. It had just resurfaced, all of a sudden, like… something… very deeply hidden and suppressed, sometimes triggering into coming back to the surface. And this… ‘moment’ was one such trigger.

I didn’t want to be alone again.

A tear, just as inexplicable as that overwhelmingly strong emotion, escaped one of my closed eyes. But having this someone nearby meant a lot already, that the disagreement was just… that, not a significant rift already, the same day of meeting that… friend, again.
