Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

She had a good point. Creamy maybe as dull as a butter knife, but he was connected.

It didn't matter at this moment. Even if Creamy was still alive, Vodan didn't want to put himself back on his masters radar right now. Delivering Creamy to Master Vengerfield had put Vodan back in command of the carrier Anansi after a year or so on the run from his former comrades. But so far Vodan hadn't managed to achieve much to show the master he was worthy of the command again.

Capturing a letter of marque good for operating in the Emperor's systems, and having himself recognised as it bearer would show everyone in Vengerfield's legion that Vodan was no ordinary pirate captain.

"So your telling me your title is just that huh? I guess its a good thing you got credits" said Vodan checking the info he had on the sisters.

"Pretty soon I'm going to be up against a flotilla of misguided freelancers. It'd be a real help if another carrier joined the Anansi to help us out. Say, one of your escort carriers Lambast, and its wings of battel hardened pilots"

Looking up from the pad, Vodan fixed his eyes on Lambast to see if she was giving away any feelings on the idea.

"I mean, if I had that wight off my mind, I maybe able to think about sending someone to see the master to deliver news of my good fortune. Wadd'ya say Lady Mercy?"
07 Apr 2024, 8:41pm
All this chasing cold trails was getting tedious. Lambast had expected to buy the information she wanted with ease. She had intended to drop an impressive number of credits in front of this man and be away with Creamy's last known location. Instead she was getting roped into mercenary work.

The easy answer to Vodan's question was yes. Raiders and freelancers were one in the same thing depending who's side you were on, so taking out a fleet didn't bother Lambast at all, but it wasn't only Lambast and Kaisla that would be involved.

Going against a captain that held a letter of marque could pit her against a proud imperial family with a heroic legacy, earned forging the empires freedom for the oppressive federation. That crime would do more than halt Lambasts town development plans.

A glance at Kaisla told Lambast she was down for the fight. That was not at all surprising, Kaisla was a fighter pilot to the core, and she gladly took any chance to test her skill.

"That little question, mister Hooder, has a rather large answer. Frankly, I'm inclined to forget about Lord Goodness and build my project elsewhere now, but if you could see your way clear to sending me what intel you have on your intended target, I'll see if I am able to leaned aid to your endeavour" Answered Lambast standing up to leave.

If the target was off limits to Lambast, then maybe her fleet could be a trojan horse. A little double cross wasn't Lambasts style, but it was an option.

"Yeah, but this is a limited time offer girls. We'll be moving out soon, so I'll want your answer sooner. You hear me?"

Flicking down his pad, Vodan looked for the intel he had on the seasoned fleet he was going to take on. Copying the info, he started editing out everything Lamb and Kai didn't need to know.

"Stay close ladies, or I'll take it as a rejection of the deal. Take care out there"

"Ah, yeah... We were, kind of...", my speech slowed down as I took a dive into memories again. "Operating within the same... Paradigm. I mean, back then when I was a trainee, before the war."

"I was stationed on the carrier, in the Pleiades, we were doing patrols and emergency response... Been told that, the longer we keep 'em locked in skirmishes, the more time our scientists... Aegis, included... That, first iteration of Aegis, have to create a better defensive measure. Other than flying ships in circles."

"And, you know, phah," I shrugged, sounding lively and ironic, "These days, nobody can prove it right or wrong. Maybe it was wrong, and they're really endless. Or almost. Or we did put a dent in their numbers, but they were preparing for that war. Pumping out more new vessels than they kept in the Pleiades... And other nebulae... Maybe, perfectly aware that it was our only way to measure their numbers. So, they simply gave us wrong numbers."

I stopped for a brief moment, my unfocused stare turned to the pilot seat, and the console. Even if the seat itself is different and custom now, it wasn't just about the equipment, the controls of this exact ship. Sometimes I wonder... What kind of impact on people around me I make, and I already made, being here, doing what I do. As a part of the AXDF, and the person I was before. What their lives could've been like, if not for me? And mine, if not for them? And not just people close to me, or, correctly, only one person who's been on her patrol at the moment. But... Any people, near, or connected to, the places I've been to.

"Kas... well...," still unable to find any answer of acceptable precision, I returned to reality slowly. "Let's say, a few times more cold than you've been before. Almost to the point where I had to stand up and leave. Wishing her the best, genuinely, and telling that we're on the opposite sides now. And I, kind of... Understand, you know."

"It's only us and them now, or, us or them. Given her past... She isn't exactly fond of humankind, in general. Humans en masse. So it may perfectly be another source of her... Sympathy towards Thargoids. Not to mention all the wild stories she has with them, and the fact that she might be alive now thanks to them."

"And, me... I guess you figured out my views already. So I daresay the fact that we aren't enemies, me and her personally, on top of 'opposite sides in a war', is quite surprising."
09 Apr 2024, 7:34pm
"Well, then, if you ask me, you should still keep an eye out for her. Or on her. To me, it still sounds like she doesn't really want to see humans gone. Or, at least, she only wants the idiots that caused this war to get slapped in the face so they think twice about pissing off a way more advanced species again just for some fancy resources and tech we absolutely could've lived without. I mean, hell, can you imagine what we could be doing with all of that Guardian stuff if our research focus was on it and not stealing it from someone that has issues with us 'borrowing' their stuff? Or, at least, we didn't have to focus so much on the weapons of the Guardians because we may have made some Thargoids angry and our sticks are total shit against them."

I sighed, thinking it was already time to move on from that subject again.

"But, yeah... getting sidetracked. Don't be so quick to dismiss her. She's just ..." I paused, not knowing what to say. "Just needs time, maybe. But doesn't want to be our enemy, I don't think. I'd be pretty fucking annoyed and demotivated to see this happening, too, if I was as devoted to trying to establish some kind of common ground as she seems to be. Maybe you just happened to be the first person on that 'wrong' side - " Wrong with air quotes. " - who got caught up in her venting out some emotions. I guess your bitching - in the, 'What a bunch of idiots', kind of way, not the offensive one - about the Thargoids probably didn't help that either. Probably a subject best avoided with her for now, I'd say."

A deep breath, and a look toward the pilot's seat, then I continued to talk.

"You look at that seat a lot. Memories, or just thinking?"

"And speaking of thinking... kind of thinking about going through with that surgery thing as a surprise for her. Maybe play around in the VR space a bit more before I decide to really make sure if I want it, or to what level. But I think she might... appreciate it. Don't think I need to say why. And... yeah, might just invite her to that VR playground for a bit of messed up fun."

Timeline: 04 March 3310, shortly after the destruction of the Taranis

"Don't worry," I nodded in response. "I'm not dismissing her. She's been through a lot, she has a good rationale for her points of view, she's usually way more emotional compared to me, and... Well..."

"Besides that, we managed to talk that out. But I'm still surprised by the fact that we aren't, actually, enemies."

The latest sentence sounded both honest and tired. Because I was both honest and tired, tired of people still getting dragged down by infighting and blaming other people, or an abstract 'humankind in its entirety'. And I let it hang in the air for a little while.

"By the way, it's hard to believe that an entire race, an advanced, spacefaring one, is made entirely of scumbags. Discovering space flight itself, not to mention FTL, requires some cooperation... Unless they 'evolved' it somehow and current ones simply take it for granted, like we do with walking."

"And, the seat...", reflexively, I looked at it once again, "Yeah, memories, or thoughts based on memories... All that. So, I'd say 'both'."

"You mentioned some military guy who's been telling you the same stuff I've been told a couple of years ago. So I remembered the Pleiades. Being in training. Then, a person I was before the AXDF. And so on...," saying that, I made a few vague circles in the air with my hand, starting small and slowly increasing the size, depicting something like a snowball that was getting larger. "And, kind of, got stuck in thoughts a little, about what kind of impact I made, being in that seat, for myself, for people around me, all that. I tend to think about stuff... Perhaps, too much sometimes, phah."

And I tried to make that little giggling in the end sound as light-hearted and upbeat as it could in the circumstances.

"I'm sure she will appreciate it. Also, you could make this 'surprise' similar to... What you saw today. Like, keeping her unaware that your VR avatar now looks totally like the real you. Or vice versa, to be more correct. Until you meet."
10 Apr 2024, 10:25pm
“Oh, yeah, I was definitely not gonna tell her about anything like that. Not until we met again following, that is. Wouldn’t be much of a surprise if I told her, would it?”

Couldn’t help but grin at least a little at the thought.

“Can’t guarantee I’ll not tease a bit about it, if I do, you know, it. And, really, we should probably just leave the war out of things for a little. I mean, not just this chat, but overall. Who even benefits from all the chaos, death and the destruction, other than the already fat pockets of arms manufacturers?”

It was more a rhetorical question - and even if it wasn’t, the answer was so obvious it wouldn’t need to be said. Having raised both arms, I let them drop back down and the hands hit the thighs somewhat audibly.

“Anyway. Yeah, I think Kas might’ve been a bit emotional when you met. I don’t think that weird, sort of half-functional but not quite adult state her brain’s in really doesn’t help with keeping those things in check, either.”

"Now. Now you understand."

I gave Jana a stern look right in the eyes, trying to maintain it at least for a few seconds, and then slowly transformed it into a wild grin.

"...Why I didn't tell you about what happened to me."

"And yeah, on a serious note. Whatever happened to her... Affected her a lot, and not only physically. It's difficult not to talk about the war nowadays, but I think it's worth it."

After a moment of seriousness, the same wild grin slowly returned to my face again, and this time I accompanied it with a finger-pistol aimed at Jana.

"...And you two certainly know what to talk about. Hehehe."
10 Apr 2024, 11:18pm
“Yeah, definitely do. But… I’m not gonna go pulling any triggers until the end of the month, at least. Maybe even wait until May or June. By that point, we should really know if the mad plan to kill eight giant Thargoid ships is going to work out as we want it to or not.”

I paused.

“Then again, I guess it’s probably going to make me decide then either to have a bit of idiot fun before the lights go out, or because I don’t have to worry about survival nearly as much any longer. So maybe it doesn’t matter in which direction it goes.”

“And yeah, I’ll probably be avoiding the Thargoid subject with Kas whenever I meet her again. Unless she wants to bring it up in some way. But given what it means to her… I doubt it. Probably would prefer to avoid getting any unwanted memories or feelings dug up.”

I scoffed ironically in response.

"Phah. I'd say... Be stupid now, tomorrow may never come. And, that makes me so bad with long-term plans, of course."

"Only the...", after a little thinking pause, I corrected myself. "Only the good kind of stupidity, you know. Something that you'd totally regret later but with a smile. Saying that you were stupid."

"...That's why I've been to the hospital so many times...", sounded like a commentary addition addressed to nobody in particular. Maybe to the Universe itself. At least, I doubt that hospitals have anything to do with me from now on.
13 Apr 2024, 9:29am
"I don't know, guess I might regret making some parts of my body bigger than they should be later, but hell, why shouldn't I have some fun while I'm still in my best years? So to speak. Or maybe for most of my life where it won't be questioned much."

"And, really, might make for a funny thing to tell someone younger when I'm getting older. Especially the part of just how I got to that point in the first place. Just imagine me making that explanation from our VR adventures, and then showing them a picture of Kas to tell them what convinced me. I'd love to see the looks on people's faces."

I put on a silly expression for a moment, imagining the scene.

"... and I might end up in a hospital at some point, too. Who knows. Hopefully not for the reason of 'My body was nearly vaporized in its entirety', though."

"Well, unlike me and Kas, you may revert that thing later if you want," I shrugged, but speaking in a reassuring tone. "But something tells me you aren't going to do that."

"From what I remember...", slowing down and turning my vision inwards, I went into my memories, trying to recollect as much of those unexpected, strange and shocking, in a good way, feelings. "That VR experiment was absolutely stunning for me. A little silly joke meant to help Kas with letting out her... socially inappropriate fantasies, but it went out of hand in the best way possible. Though, I still did my part of hanging around and being a silly funny goof, for those accepting atmosphere points. Having a real person, not a VR bot, that won't judge you, at your side, and all that."

"Anyway, unlike you and Kas, I had no idea how much I'm going to like it. But starting with that little sceptical approach only made the effect stronger. I literally crashed on the floor laughing through tears, unable to figure out what's happening in my head because it was something absolutely new, but something that turned my world upside down."
13 Apr 2024, 7:19pm
"Yeah, I doubt I'd go back to anything else after that.", I replied, also shrugging a little. "Too much fun for... not that many downsides, I'd guess at least. I know it won't be as painful to get adjusted clothes... probably."

"And hey, can't have been all bad to have done that screwing around in VR if it got you to that point of realizing something good, right? I mean... you sure don't look like you've got any issues with being this tall."

I paused for a moment, thinking.

"You know, to be totally honest, I never really thought about doing that kinda weird stuff in there. That VR environment. Just happened to think that looked like an interesting server to hop into from the 'No holds barred' description it had. I was even more convinced when I saw you tow - the only regret I have is not getting to witness the terror I heard those bots mention was being spread by a giant and a woman with inappropriately sized body features, in the water park."

"And, yeah, what I was going to say... I never thought about living out that... 'fantasy', I guess, even in a virtual environment where it has no consequences."

"Me? Issues?" I pointed a finger at myself, raising an eyebrow, with a comical grin on my face, which then slowly transformed into a smug, self-satisfied smirk as I crossed my arms over my chest. "Nah. I don't have any issues. It's the world that has issues with me."

I kept staring at Jana for a few seconds until the laughter I've been suppressing all that time finally forced its way out.

"Mwaaaaaahahaha... Aahh... Yeah, nevermind. Adapting, and watching people around me adapt to seeing me like this, was a little weird and funny, but it's okay now. And, in general, I'm not such a public person."

"Though, yeah, blending in with the crowds is impossible now I guess. Same goes for Kas. Even if we attract... Different kinds of attention, I'd say. But, mostly, people don't care, everyone has their own stuff to deal with and there are enough other weirdly-looking folks around."
14 Apr 2024, 11:15am
"Yeah, can imagine there's still a lot of heads that'd turn whenever you - one of you two - show up somewhere public. Hm. Wonder what the reaction would be if you were both in the same place together. Almost like two polar opposites of the extreme range."

I shrugged, lightly amused but also not caring too much.

"I guess it doesn't really matter so much what other people think of it, anyway, as long as you're happy with it. Which would be my case if I do, you know. Though I do still think going as far as she did would be a little too much to have on my own body, even when I like it. If you get what I mean."
