Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

“So you think the Thargoids would go over there with their big fancy war boats if they kicked us out of here?”

That was a genuine question, nothing but curiosity inside.

“I did mention it earlier that I have been wondering if one of my older friends has gone over there. But, well, no way I’m bothered to go that way. I’d either spend a couple hours bored dead on my ship jumping through neutron system after neutron system with occasional stops for repairs and fuel, a week or more bored dead sightseeing, or… you guessed it, bored dead on a fleet carrier ferry.”

“And I couldn’t really tell how long Kasumi’s been taking ships around. But then, I’ve also never seen her fly. And, odd thing around that… it’s like public records for her just don’t exist. Even taking privacy into consideration… which I did, there’s just nothing. As if she doesn’t exist.”

Timeline: 04 March 3310, shortly after the destruction of the Taranis

"Nah. I've no idea, honestly. But damn I'm sure they know about Colonia... Like... Their sensors, they've been found literally anywhere."

I scowled, switching to a 'commenting' tone.

"It seems like not only humans tend to start wars over balls of dirt in the whole galaxy full of those."

"And, you know," shrugging, I shook my head a little. "Discovering records and other network traces of a person isn't really my thing. I know she's good... Was good at cybersecurity and hacking, I don't know about the memory loss, she told me she lost many of those skills, but maybe she practised deleting her traces intentionally. Kind of, fits her nature."
26 Mar 2024, 8:01pm
I was confused.

“So, if you don’t think they’re gonna bother sending Titans that way, what do you think they would do? It’s not like the humans out there’d bother any Thargoid unless it started screwing with shit.”

“And I didn’t really mean trying to find Kasumi’s traces on networks or whatever. More like, just, is there anything in publicly accessible databases without going into private details. But, well, you guess. Nothing to be found. Maybe she did wipe the records, but I don’t know.”

Timeline: 04 March 3310, shortly after the destruction of the Taranis

"Like I said," once again, I shrugged and shook my head slightly, "absolutely no friggin' idea. If they win here... And only if... They may try moving their remaining Titans to Colonia. Or not. Those things are, kind of, slow, and now they don't have the surprise effect, we know how they look and what they do already."

"Or they could just start popping fleets of Interceptors there and overrun the place because it's so small and full of people who think they're safe. This scenario sounds more likely."

"And the absence of records of her does really seem odd. Like... Those bloody cameras are everywhere. On every floor, over every doorway in public places, elevators, store counters, everything is stuffed with cameras and they try to recognise you for... 'safety measures'. Fuck them, I'd say. I had a habit of closing my eyes or lowering my head if I wore a hat... Perhaps it doesn't work with me anymore, phah. Not because I have anything to hide, but because I hate being constantly watched and recorded."

"Okay, they aren't for public access yet they're data that's being bought and sold."
27 Mar 2024, 6:13am
“Yeah, I guess, let’s just assume they won’t see the point in bothering a few systems way out near the galactic core. Unless they decide to start planting barnacles over there even though we’ve basically made the spot ours already, those people are as far as they could get from the conflict and wouldn’t do anything to annoy the Thargoids. Buuut… I think they wouldn’t feel so safe if our home ground here - “ I pointed at the ground. “ - was suddenly removed from existence. Figuratively.”

“And that whole data thing, was more just, I asked Aegis at first and they were like ‘We have absolutely no idea where she is from’. Within the limits of what they could say without permission, of course. And those profiles for the Pilot’s Fed which you can look up, yeah, absolutely damn nothing either. Just a year of birth and some really basic info, not even birth place. I don’t think she’s cared to really keep anything visible in there, not that it’s… really a surprise.”

That latter fact definitely wasn’t one, considering that Kasumi was, very much, an individual who was not very public. At all. But the complete lack of history still felt a bit odd.

"You have to be quite a special kind of fruit to move to Colonia and settle there anyway, phah. Though... I'm still convinced, even if Thargoids know about them, other humans are still more of a threat to them."

I spread my arms and stretched my lips ironically.

"You know that shit. For some arseholes, including three very big arseholes, 'independent' still means 'untaken'."

"...And, regarding Kas and her past... Maybe she simply wants her past to vanish. I totally understand that. Amongst people with dubious or non-existent public records... I've seen more of that type, rather than bastards you'd like to shoot on sight, knowing the truth about them."

Lambast Mercy“I would like to talk about Lord Charles Goodness the Eighth; otherwise known as Creamy Goodness the Third”

"Ohhh ffff" escaped from between Vodans hand's after hearing that name again.

He felt safe and warm with his face in his hands, and it was tempting to stay there until the nasty women went away. He had his plate full planning an attack on an experienced pirate fleet. Somehow a stupid little girl now possessed a letter of marque, and that was a prize worth more than any number of badly guarded trade routs.

His first officer, Belladonna, had smuggled herself on board one of their ships hidden in a slave pod, and he was waiting for her to make contact. What he didn't need right now was Creamy fucking Goodnees. That was a problem he had solved months ago.

But here he was with two people that didn't look like they would take 'I don't know' as an answer. Kaisla was a freelancer, and ace pilot the Anansi had worked with before. Lambast owns a few financially successful companies, and happened to be a minor Nobel in the Empier. Both women shouldn't be dismissed from the allies' column right off the bat.

"Sure, I hunted him for a while; he was needed alive ok. Alive. If I didn't have to capture him, he'd have been dead years ago. So, we played kiss-chance for a bit, then he had a blast of common sense and chose to go settle his beef with the Master"

Putting his hands flat on the table, Vodan leaned back looking as open as he was being honest.

"All I did was show him where to catch a lift to Arcadia, he stepped on board willingly. That's the last I saw of him, thank god"
27 Mar 2024, 4:09pm
“Yeah, I guess that’s possible. I know I’d want my past to accidentally fall into a deep hole just before it gets sealed up. Preferably with nobody seeing it. Maybe I could ask, but I get that feeling I’d probably get no answers. Or only …” I needed to look for the word in my head. “… noncommittal ones. The kind where you can tell the person doesn’t really want to talk about it.”

“And that assumes she can even remember in the first place.”

I sighed, with the kind of ‘tired smile’ expression appearing on my face.

“Can’t have simple friends, can we? But yeah, those people in Colonia, I’d guess they’d probably be able to avoid messing with Thargoids for… a few decades, maybe even centuries, while they build up their stuff over there. Assuming a supernova that’s a little too close for comfort doesn’t wipe it all out in that time… I guess they’d maybe be interested in taking back our space at that point in time, anyway. Whether a big star exploding makes them want to or not. Or maybe the Thargoids would already have left those systems again by that time.”

I shrugged. This really went into speculation territory a lot, but last I’d heard, the Colonia locals were generally quite uninterested in anything going on in the Bubble. Though if the latter were overrun, and later on reclaimed by humans again some decades or centuries later, it could even cause the reverse phenomenon of a “Colonia exodus”… which would be made even more ironic by if their spot near the galactic core ended up taking a similar model to the Bubble’s, in that theoretical future.

‘Hopefully it’ll remain theory, anyway.’, I thought.

"Hey, I'd like that too," I made an overexaggerated wink and pointed a finger-pistol at Jana. "But, gah, human head doesn't work that way. Memories, experience, all that load of shite."

"I'd totally like to be a... more simple person. Maybe. But, I presume that only comes with being stupid. No thanks, phah. I'm already stupid enough for my liking."

"And those people in Colonia...", I nodded upwards, then realising that I had no idea where the Colonia region was exactly at the moment, relative to the planet and our place on it. "...Maybe we are looking at that 'better society', but it's, kind of... Work in progress. Too much to be done. Though, hey, we all have to start somewhere. Remember the USA, nobody took them seriously in their first decades."

"I only hope they know what the heck they're doing and they didn't slack out on their history lessons...", sounded as a quiet comment.
27 Mar 2024, 8:27pm
“If there’s one thing I’d recommend to them as an idiot in this madness, it’s to just not fuck with Thargoids, or anything that even looks like they might own it. Or have thoughts of owning it. That really doesn’t seem to have any chance of resulting in anything other than guns to the face. For both sides involved.”

I breathed, deeply.

“And maybe we are just stupid in the way we are because the world tried to fuck us over in almost every way. But, I guess we also wouldn’t want to be different, now. So even if that… the past of our lives might’ve been a bit shit, I guess it made some of what we have now better.”

“Would’ve been even better if we could be this way without all of the shit.”, I quietly added, a second later.

Last Post

Unblinking eyes scrutinized Vodan's face as he talked. Honesty wasn't what Lambast saw, it would be better described raider captain having no reason to mislead. He was saying enough to answer the question without giving an answer. Right now, Lambast wanted clarification. If Creamy was dead, that was one less person she would have to look for. Maul was still missing, and she would really like to find out what happened to him.

"What exactly do you mean by Arcadia mister Hooder? If you allude to the classical meaning, then Lord Goodness would indeed put himself front and center for that ride, but I think you mean something else. What chance do I have of finding Lord Goodness. Alive?" She asked in a flat, almost quite voice.

"Uh... You know, even living in a system with an ammonia world in it could possibly lead to war with bugs. Or living next to such a system. Or within ten lightyears range, and they have stars packed real tight out there," I scoffed sarcastically, "It seems like Thargoids are even more territorial and egoistic arseholes than humans."

And the second part of Jana's reply made me take a deep breath. More like, reflexively. For social, communicative reasons.

"And you may be right, actually. We've been through shit but it formed our personalities. I'd like to have anything else rather than traumatic shit as the foundation of my 'me', but... Ugh. Nobody asked me, phah. Had to survive. Accomplished. Now, kicking arse. A greenhouse flower would've died several times already. Maybe, thirty five times. Once a year. Being in my boots, phah."
29 Mar 2024, 9:16am
“Yeah, dunno. I’d say I agree, with some… what’s the word… caveats, I think, but we don’t even have that much of a clue of how Thargoids work. Yeah, maybe they do just hate everyone near them and really want their personal space. Or maybe they just don’t want idiots whose governments see only prime real estate to be conquered when they find alien stuff and the owners of it show up. I mean, really, it’s the politicians that pushed for going into those nebulas and screwing with Thargoids stuff, thinking nothing could go wrong. And don’t get me started on how they continued putting civilians near them even after we knew it made them upset.”

I paused for a few seconds, to think, then shrugged.

“Neither of us have really been prime examples of interstellar cooperation, anyway. We started to shoot them in the face even without a Thargoid offense occurring, and then they just started shooting back without trying to talk about it. Not that the mycoid thing would’ve helped. Or if they did try to talk, I have a feeling it’s probably buried behind layers of propaganda about how Thargoids are idiots without a brain worth speaking of. Even though they’re clearly not.”

“I do wonder sometimes, if this is all just some kind of weird test. And which parts we’re passing with an A, and which ones we’re passing with a godawful score.”

I sighed.

“So, anyway, yeah… I’d probably not ask to repeat my past experiences even if it turned me into, well, who I am now. Maybe we should get the current Fed president out on the streets for a few years and see how he still likes his system then.”

I let out a long exhale and shrugged in a tired and subtly indifferent way, parrying another round of human-blaming.

"It would've been easier to figure out how to stop the war if our enemies were willing to speak. Ah... I forgot, they aren't. They just shoot at everything human even if it doesn't shoot back because it has no weapons, because it's... How was it called...", I scratched my head in a sarcastic manner, then raising my index finger up into the air. "Ah. Civilian!"

"Far God cult, peace movement and that Kingfisher thing had their fair share of propaganda, GalNet 'screen time' and PilotFed support too... Can't see them actively helping us to stop the war, even with their means."

"And, Hudson... Okay, he's going to stay for a few months more, 'thanks'," air quotes time, "to that Rhea earthquake... I guess he would like the show. All that shit had made him a president, rich'n'powerful'n'stuff, so why not. He has already shown many times that he doesn't care about people."
30 Mar 2024, 10:16pm
That unwarranted outburst at "human blaming" made me cross my arms and put on a 'Are you seriously going off on that stupid rant again' look.

"And you can stop trying to push your nonsense about how you seem to hate the peace movement when there's quite a few of them who put the blame on both of the sides. Seriously. It's not even their fault the war got pushed to a point where even if we knew Thargoid language - and no one was deliberately stopping people from trying to learn it - they wouldn't bother listening to us anyway. So I don't even count that Kingfisher whatever as a valid try. And the way I remember it, in this war, we began to pull triggers first, whatever happened in the first one. Then they began indiscriminately targeting ships as well. So, please cut that bullshit attitude about how I'm "blaming humans" like I'm not pointing out the Thargoids are just as big idiots, if not worse for being the older species. Or stop being picky about which things you take out of what I say, when you're trying to claim you 'don't hate Thargoids'. Or, better yet, fuck the subject entirely. Bury it under a pile of dirt, nuke it, then glass the ground for good measure."

"And the Far God cult? Pffff, yeah, right. Like those nutjobs ever wanted 'peace'. They preached about Thargoids wiping us out. I really doubt that has peace written on it. Do you think they went spreading hippy messages about love and peace when the Dedicant took off for Thargoid space? It's not how I remember it, anyway. And those guys are the last ones I'd take serious as anything related to peace."

I shook my head and dropped my arms again, unintentionally knocking over the empty water can.

"And if you want my opinion on Federal politics and its presidency for the last... decade?"

I slowly and deliberately lifted my left hand up, making a fist, then turned the back toward the cockpit window. And flicked the middle finger up abruptly, not quite able to prevent a silly grin from accompanying the gesture.
