Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Uh, okay," I spread my arms and lowered my head in a 'I have nothing else to say' gesture. "To make things simple: I hate them. I mean, the Thargoids. But only those who attack and abduct people. And I don't hate those who don't. Problem is...", narrowing my eyes, I switched to an ironic tone, "...I haven't seen those who don't."

"Humans are idiots. Feds are aggressive war-mongering baboons," I raised my head again and started counting with my fingers, "Imps are arrogant hypocritical pricks, Alliance are a bunch of useless dorks, and Independents can be any kind of shit, and they're even more useless. Corpos from every side are friggin exploiters on top of that. Those fuckin politicians deserve a red hot metal rod up their arses, but as soon as you give the power to anyone else, they start making things even worse. Problem is, I'm a human too. And Thargoids aren't very kind to turncoats."
31 Mar 2024, 12:49am
"Yeah, I think the answer to 'Has anyone met any nice Thargoids so far' is no. Or, probably no, anyway. And I doubt it'd be me to initiate any kind of contact with them, considering how the only interaction I've had with any Thargoid was 'shoot them in the face because they're sitting on my home'."

I paused for a short moment.

"Not that I mean it personally or like killing them. Unless it's one of those Scy... Scy... whatever. One of the creepy people stealers - you know the thing I mean. Those fucks, I literally don't care. Even if I have to get right in their face and watch them blow up, mostly, my brain's ok with it. Not getting any sympathy from me when a Thargoid's in one of those. Taking people, especially like they are, is one of those lines that shouldn't be crossed. And maybe I do just get in their faces to deliver 'presents' in the form of the shard cannons."

I let out a sigh.

"But yeah, coming back to that 'human stuff'... it's like every politician ever is awful and just in the position for the power, even if they can lead. Or most of them are. And those that do try doing stuff for the people... well, I don't know if it says more about them or the system that they are not successful 99% of the time. Maybe it's just the politics being shit and basically needing to be a shitty scumbag to do well for most who get involved in it."

"And if you'll allow me, I'm just going to declare this room or cockpit a no-Thargoid-zone."

Random gestures through the air with the right hand followed, as if I was trying to conjure a magic spell using a wand.

"Unless you want to have us both bitching about those stupid abductions. I can allow that."

"Ah, it seems like being an arsehole is the best way to success in human society," and I accompanied these words with a dismissive hand wave. "As soon as you stop accumulating wealth and power by going over other people's heads, you've lost the race, since there are always other arseholes ready to go over yours."

"That's why I feel...", I slowed down, as if giving my words more time to form different options, but the first one was the most correct. "...at home here. Almost. Maybe. Perhaps. As much 'at home' as I can. Since it feels like that skewed social value system is almost non-existent here. Even that rank of mine... It doesn't mean having power over people, it means that we all can do our thing better when I'm in the place where I am now."

"Of course, when the war started, many people turned to fighting. But, back then, it wasn't like that, you had to have quite an interesting mindset to leave everything behind and join."
31 Mar 2024, 8:06pm
"Well, maybe I'd have come around to be here, or, wherever 'here' was before, if I'd known about it a few years ago, when I abandoned the Feds. Abandoned in the loosest sense possible, but, yeah. Anywhere than where I was before would've done for me at that time, but well, I settled where I did. The only regret I have is that it became the parking spot of a Titan last... not even last year, but the one before that."

I shrugged.

"Can't know the future, though. And ..." I breathed out rather audibly. "I hope there's something left for me to recover and rebuild when those idiots are kicked out of there. I never tried looking around, just too risky."

Then, I waved my right hand as if to dismiss the subject.

"But that's a matter for another day. Or the end of the month. Maybe start of the next one. Whenever things get around to that - seems like everyone is looking at that Leigong Titan first before paying Oya a visit. And I think I only want to go back there when, like, the Titan is gone gone and I don't have to worry about those idiot Thargoids trying to come back into the system. It'd be basically impossible to defend it if they tried to re-invade, that close to their big fancy war boat."

"Anyway, before it goes to fighting Thargoids and all that stupid shit again, maybe I'll ask Kasumi to join me around there when it's all done. I'm not sure yet. Would say I had a home down planetside, but it's actually just a small apartment in the hab sections of a starport where I keep my stuff. They're still terraforming the water world in the system and it's got like, 26 atmospheres of surface pressure, so it's mostly just automated machines and living in some seriously reinforced domes down there until it goes down to a level where, you know, humans can actually walk around outside. And there isn't a lot of land yet either, I think. They wouldn't still be calling it a water world otherwise."

I quickly double-checked my info.

"Make that 27 and a half atmospheres. Also a nice chill 350 degrees Celsius outside. You can imagine. Maybe I'll buy myself a proper thing on the planet anyway, when the system is taken back and they start fixing everything up. All I was given on that world was a small hab unit which probably couldn't fit Kasumi and her hips, to go be lazy in between shifts, or sleep if I didn't want to go back to orbit. I did work on the terraforming project a little bit. Not the complicated parts, mind you."

I paused.

"Come to think of it, Kas might have trouble fitting herself into that apartment on the station in orbit as well. But I might just not tell her."

"Yeah, I meant... Not here as 'here'," I nodded towards the cockpit canopy. "This refugee place sucks, of course. I meant, AXDF. Wherever we go, wherever my duty sends me. First, it was the carrier, then the town, now we're here... And so on."

"And, you know, phah," an ironic chuckle and slightly goofy grin added perfectly to my general view of the matter. "It doesn't feel that bad to have no home while surrounded by people who are, effectively, in the same situation. I mean, some pilots have, but they either have no time to pay a visit nowadays, or, you know, it's in the infested areas."

"But, yeah... The future. Considering we have one, phah. I've no idea, honestly. Too many factors. Like... The person I see my future with, she's from the local community and doesn't want to leave. I don't want to retire from AXDF either. That partnership AXDF has with the community is a long-standing thing but, I don't know what might happen when the war ends. If Thargoids retreat from the Pleiades as well, AXDF might start wrapping up those camps on the border, being needed elsewhere... Uh, I don't know. We didn't talk much about that either because it's difficult to plan anything these days, you know. Too many factors."

I made a long-drawn sigh, emphasising the weight of the topic further, since it was from that bunch of 'heavy things that loom over me'.

"And yeah, those prefab apartments are damn tiny. Still beat tents and barracks though, by quite a margin, phah. Not to mention that... Yeah, can't use bunk beds, you know."
31 Mar 2024, 10:41pm
"I guess, it's a good thing I don't really have any attachments like that at the moment. In the future, haven't got the slightest clue to be honest. Not something I really think about either. I've got myself already, and what happens... happens. I don't really like planning out 'social stuff' much, so I just let whatever comes, come."

Maybe I was thinking about this a little more now, because the Thargoid madness seemed to be coming to something of a close. Or, at least, it looked like I wouldn't have to be dealing with them sitting where I lived for much longer.

"And, pff, I don't think she would fit in a bunk bed or something like that either. Especially if it's one of those that has enclosed walls, on the sides. But, and maybe I'm too weird like that, it would be kinda funny to watch her try to get through such an apartment. Her own is at least a proper one so it mostly provides space for her to, I don't know, bend forward without sticking that awfully large... ahem, you-know-what, into everything. Not that I'd personally mind ..."

"But, yeah, anyway ..."

What was I going to say here? Couldn't remember. Maybe I just had nothing and it was only a kind of distraction from the fact that I liked Kasumi's new body way too much kept slipping out.

"I guess I don't have much more to say right now. Maybe I'm just thinking about future plans a little more now that it looks like the Thargoid mess is maybe going to be over soon. Since I was, actually, already all set up after getting the pilot's license and, you know, all that. Think it's about time I get a break from it all by the world, anyway."

"Those attachments...," a grin appeared on my face, "...they simply don't ask you, they just happen. Mine happened before the war anyway. And we, kind of...", my stare wandered to a random direction somewhere at the side as I tried to find the most correct set of words, "...We went through several months of that 'friends' stage so I can't say it was absolutely unexpected. Friends happened to be very... khm... Close friends."

"At least she isn't from AXDF so I'm not breaking anything, phah."

"And it's always a good thing to take a break," I spread my arms and smiled, in a positive way. "Especially if you can, you know, actually take a break and enjoy stuff you like, without anything that drills the backside of your brain in the background."

Imagining possible options of my own 'break' after the war had made me stop for a second as both my stare and my mind wandered further from the conversation once more.

"We all definitely need a break...", sounded as a quiet comment on the situation.
03 Apr 2024, 3:46pm
"I guess we do.", I replied. "Too much shit over the last year and a half. Not quite a half but it's getting there. And worse if you count the ones before that. But hell, we're both still sitting here despite that. And one of us in a more ideal state personally."

A not so sneaky look went at the rest of the oversized body that was somewhat opposite of me, not just centered somewhere around the face.

"And are you trying to hint at something with that 'very close friends' thing? Or just your own.. situation? Because ..." I looked off in a random direction with a, somewhat, undecipherable expression on the face. "... I know someone whose body I'd kinda just love to get my hands on. Assuming she's ever interested, of course, but hell. Like I said earlier, even got me thinking about if I want to have something like that - though more reasonable - myself. In this 'real' place."

"Kinda feel like she might prefer 'alone' though. And I guess that's a way off thing, anyway, when she's got enough of her own to figure out. But yeah, I'd really like to just go back to doing some more of that... 'civilian' stuff, when I don't have that annoying brain noise telling me there's a war with aliens in what is basically my backyard going on."

I had to admit that Kasumi's body was making me kind of dreamy sometimes, for its completely inappropriate and oversized nature, but also... looking really fun to get ahold of, and giving me other funny feelings. Her personality also helping that deal a lot, of course.

"Yeah... My final form is unleashed upon this puny world!" I raised my hands and made claw-like gestures, scowling and sounding like a cartoonish villain for a second. "Mwhahaha, you fools!"

Barely suppressing a laughter that quite tenaciously asked to be let out, I was able to keep that evil face for a couple of seconds more.

"Grrrr! Pfffffhahahaha...", waving a hand, with my eyes squeezed from laughing, I continued. "Ah, nevermind. Yeah. I may pretty much call this ideal. Like, I can't ask for more."

"And, you...", sounding slowly and quietly, like crawling my way through words, I looked straight at Jana. "...You. Your interest in Kas and her new shape is, you know... Quite clear. You don't have to read other people's minds to notice it."

"Anyway, nah. There was no hidden hint but I can't argue that, well... a) the dispositions are somewhat similar, and b) what I just said might've sounded like it had a hidden hint."

"You know, I'm absolutely bad with hints. I flirt like a brick."
03 Apr 2024, 9:04pm
I shrugged.

"Well, I haven't exactly hidden that I think she looks hot. Even back when we first met in that VR thingy and she'd already made her hips as wide as her shoulders. I guess her 'chest' feature was a little less pronounced, but well, it's not where I had my eyes. Too much, at least. And now it's just... even better. Maybe a bit much up top... luckily, not me who's got to work with it."

"But I think I'm just gonna let things happen as they're... well, going to. Don't wanna force anything. Especially with this stupid war and the Thargoids. Whole lot of bullshit, and a friendship really just shouldn't have to be affected or dependent on that kind of thing."

I paused for a moment, looking into nowhere.

"And how is your flirting if you say you're that bad at it? Not sure I can say I've got too much experience. And I don't think poking someone with totally oversized curves into their big soft behind counts as flirting, really. ... I did mention I did that, right?"
03 Apr 2024, 10:39pm
Timeline: 04 March 3310, shortly after the destruction of the Taranis

"Exactly," winking, I pointed a finger-pistol at Jana. "I'm no life coach... Maybe, survival coach, phah. But, yeah. Letting things move naturally... Is the best option, maybe."

It was quite an unusual phenomenon for me: suddenly, I found my mind flooded by a stream of short, vivid pictures of my more recent past, year, year and a half ago. Those days when Mion and I were getting to know each other better, our friendship slowly growing and evolving, and then the first weeks and months of our relationship, after we both made a step over that invisible line. And that chain of memories slowly led me to the present day.

"Yeah, you know...", I spoke softly, still reliving those moments, seeing them like they happened a mere few days ago. My stare wandered to a random direction and a warm smile appeared on my face; I pulled my legs closer to my body and wrapped my arms around them, slowly rocking left and right, sitting on the floor. "...If something is 'yours', then... You may actually help it to grow by simply... Being. Living day by day, enjoying it, letting it grow. Without forcing things... Or trying to push them into some direction... You know, when we say 'things happen naturally', there's also our own nature involved in that."

"And, yeah... I'm really bad at flirting. Actually, I'm so bad at it and also at noticing those subtle hints that she had to drag me to the park and say things straightforwardly in private, phah."

Getting back to reality, I stopped my dreamy tilting side to side and placed my both hands on the floor.

"It's really bad. Wacky jokes and insane comments? Yeah, that's my stuff. Being subtle and finding proper words? Uh... Nah. I make flirting sound like a wacky joke. And, most of the time, the words that I'm finding could get a book banned from production. But, Kas might not mind your... Poking, phah. At least I can't remember her saying anything negative about it, so... Whether or not you mentioned it..."

Here, I made my voice sound like a whisper, but a kind of 'loud', audible whisper.

"...I know!..."

"Phah. No worries. Seriously, as far as I remember, she wasn't mad. Certainly not as mad as she was at me when I tried to... uh... Wake her up in a similar way, since nothing else seemed to help."

I raised an eyebrow.

"What... did you do?"

"And I guess she did tell you about that 'poking' incident. I swear, I was trying not to, like she told me! But it was just too irresistible to not try all of that ..."

I made an outward gesture with my hands to show that, in that moment, I was simply overtaken by my less socially decent instincts.

"So yeah, it happened. She said nothing to me about it, though. And I guess I'm not gonna ask you for any advice on what to say in certain closer moments. Hopefully, I'll notice those signs if they are there."

"I did...", a silly grin appeared on my face, I showed Jana my index finger and made a poke-imitating movement with it. "...this."

"But it wasn't that much of a joke or whatever, it seems like she still has some... to say, newly-acquired health issues. Or had, at that moment," I shrugged. "If Aegis told her she's free to go and she immediately packed her stuff to go on a long trip of sorts... I guess it's better now. Yet, at that moment, she was, like... Unconscious, but without free-falling on the bed. Unresponsive. For a few seconds. So... I checked her breathing, heart rate, body temps, pupil reflexes, all stuff that you do usually, everything was ideal or close to it, but, maybe it's something... You know, neural, brain-related. So, I thought about physical stimuli, before calling the doc."

"Thankfully, she got back to our shitty reality before I made an emergency call, and told me that it happens sometimes. Yet... She caught me red-handed, to say. Phah. And was quite mad at me, until I explained what had just happened and what I tried to achieve by doing... This," and these words were followed by a similar gesture of an index finger poking something soft.

"It seems like, well... She doesn't feel comfortable seeing me right next to her. Uh. Okay."

"...But you certainly don't want any of my advice on flirting and dating and stuff, unless...", making a vicious grin, looking straight at Jana, into her eyes, I continued, "...you're after someone really, really weird."

"Arcadia, Nirvana, Xibalba, Heaven, Tian, or whatever. Its all the same thing, and it's what we call our overseers house, and that's where Creamy went to settle the shit he stirred"

Shifting position to get a little further back from the women while still staying in his seat, Vodan held an impassive face.

"Look, if you know Creamy, you'll know he can cause trouble just by being in the room. I mean the guy fucked my life completely up for almost two years, and the little shit couldn't even remember my face, let alone what he did. But what ever. We had a talk, settled our beef, and I gave him the best chance I could with the boss, coz at the end of the day he's a stand-up guy, just real dumb. What ever happened after that was up to him and his mouth"

Leaning back, Vodan waited. He knew what questions were coming next, and no was the answer to most of them with a, don't care, or, a no fucking way, peppered in for good measure.

(The previous post)

"Who knows. Maybe I just am.", I said, with a no less than teasing tone.

"And, come on. You know me. It's got to be someone really damn weird to want to do a thing with me."

That second sentence was accompanied by a kind of... knowing facial expression, head tilted to the left, maybe a light smile or smirk with it.

"But, yeah. Not something to be rushed. And I can't imagine how embarrassing it must've been to be caught next to her poking one of those soft spots. Though it also depends a lot on where exactly. If you don't mind telling ..."

Now I put on a look daring her to say it. Or not.

"And I'm not too surprised she might've been a little unhappy about a giant right near her, especially if like, it was your first meeting. No offense, but I'd probably also sit a little further away than you normally would to another human."
