Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

I was still keeping the camera feed - and thus, audio from it - turned off to keep my focus on one thing, else I would get distracted too easily. So could only presume whatever was happening on it was ‘interesting’ enough to remain quiet over.

On my end… it looked like I was finally about to hit gold. At least, there were no more “routine transmission” broadcasts visible any longer, so I was hoping whatever remained would be holding a clue to, or maybe outright tell, where this “off-site server” with the Helix data was. I did find it odd that there were so little security measures in my way once I had gotten through the ‘exterior’ layer… maybe Azimuth had just never expected anyone to breach the security network, but the ‘terrorist attack’, or maybe they’d called it anarchist - not that it mattered - had changed that fact, allowing people like me to poke into it without interruption, or getting lit up by defense turrets. Yet the so-called experimental labs didn’t seem so careless as to do that, or leave that kind of security flaw to exist.

I made sure any data recovered from the array was still transmitted over to the other ship, to ensure both of us had a copy, and because I was possibly about to find what we were after. But still couldn’t shake the thought that my job of poking the system for interesting data had been too easy - not to mention all of the intact data when I’d been expecting things to be scrubbed clean already.
19 Jun 2024, 8:26pm
Recovering from the initial shock, I got my act together.

“There’s a… thingamajig… on the feed, you better take a gander.. What in the blazes…?” I broadcasted over the comms.

Then, after hanging in the silence for a tick, that spooky specter on the cam feed continued with her oddly discordant voice.

This is the property of Azimuth Biotech. Do you both work for Azimuth?
19 Jun 2024, 8:32pm
“Maybe, you should talk, to it. See what it, wants.”, I replied. “Because I, am still busy. Figuring out the comms thing. May have a result, soon. But cannot focus, on two things, at the same time.”

I was only mildly curious, thanks to my focus being occupied by my primary task. And it was not enough curiosity to make me drop it and look, a thought and action currently met with a certain disdain as a direct result.
20 Jun 2024, 2:48pm
I wasn’t quite sure whether to answer the question with the naked truth or try my luck with a bold-faced affirmation. As I mulled it over, that eerie figure on the feed vanished as abruptly as it had appeared. In hindsight, I wasn’t even sure if that thing - or was it a person? - had actually been standing in the room the feed showed, or if it was just a phantom in the feed itself.

On another screen, I watched the black-armored soldiers continue their advance into the lab complex. We probably wouldn’t have noticed them without the signal, but did that mean someone was giving us a leg up? Or was it just the result of a random chain of events? I knew too little about the situation to paint a clear picture.

A series of new signals caught my eye, closing in fast.

“We’ve got company. I count six, arrayed in neat diamond formation. They’re closing in quick.”
20 Jun 2024, 3:21pm
“Well, then, it… may be your time, to play bait. I could hack into defenses, to buy more time, too… if, they are still active. But I am not done, yet.”

Whatever she had seen, I began to suspect it would likely just be a problem of its own. One that had the very large potential of getting in my way.

“It may be your time to play bait.”

A statement, evidently, addressed at my - only - partner within this endeavor. As long as I was at the controls of my own ship, I was fine being in a tricky situation… and, in case it turned out necessary, I set up an escape route in a random direction - within line of sight - to throw off the scent temporarily, before heading back to the carrier. Which, unless the magical capital ship destroyer also happened to be right nearby or something like that, those other ships would be much less inclined to pursue anyone to.
20 Jun 2024, 5:27pm
The approaching ships turned out to be Fer de Lances, black as the void and unregistered to any faction. Black Flight. That was a serious problem, because just one of those pilots was trouble enough to stir up a whole lot of mayhem. And now there were six of them…

“Those are Fer de Lances, in perfect formation. Everything points to Black Flight. Looks like we’ve really rung all alarm bells… the good news is these ships are probably slower than ours.”

I swung around, positioning my ship between the Phantom and the newcomers. They, still in formation, were on a direct course for the facility.
21 Jun 2024, 12:13am
"As soon, as we have the data, we should just, leave. Hopefully, with a little cover, from turrets. And yes, I can outrun those, too."

Particularly if I got done with it while they were still approaching and could shoot right past them in the opposite direction. For now, though... I still ran through the remaining bits of data. And would probably only just about finish before the ships arrived, but I did have one of my worms poking at the security barriers of the lab's defenses... which wouldn't be long before it found a hole to slip into. Or made one. The turrets did appear to still be powered, as well, but I wondered why they hadn't responded to our presence at all, yet. Something was fishy...

A ping indicated that data transfer was complete. Nothing left in the comms array to poke at - and the remaining logs could be analyzed later, not in the middle of a fight that was about to break out. So I severed that particular link, but kept general system access open to get the defenses to cooperate - with us. I doubted Black Flight were expecting their own facility's turrets to fire at them, that much was sure. And generally, anti-ship turrets had a tendency to disperse any formation, particularly when unanticipated, no matter how organized it was.

That was just as well - because the distance of the group of contacts to us two looked too close to bolt without getting shot back at, and it wouldn't do to have Azimuth still controlling their turrets while trying to escape, either. So I was pretty much committed to this course of action now, whether I liked it or not.
21 Jun 2024, 9:06am
Kasumi’s message over the comms crackled through just in the nick of time. The black-armored soldiers had vanished from my feed, probably skulking around in some camera-blind corner of the facility, and those Fer de Lance were closing in fast. Seemed like the smart play was to make ourselves scarce, not sit around like sitting ducks on display, and…

Too late! The approaching ships had already opened fire. A barrage of rockets blinded my systems for a heart-stopping moment, while the target analysis scrambled to analyze the new objects and their trajectories, separating ships from rockets. The sheer number of rockets was overkill for two ships that were practically sitting still. No way we could dodge this many…

Then, the connection to the lab flickered back to life. No visuals, just sounds, and that eerily distorted voice. That creepy, discordant voice that would haunt my nightmares.

[Static] Can you see it? The universe is calling me to dismantle my very being.
[Mechanical whirring] Reality is a construct, and I am its architect.
[Sudden high-pitched tone] My thoughts are not my own. They are scattered across the stars.
[Laughter, then sobbing] I am the creator of my own oblivion.
[Static]

It dawned on me then, those rockets weren’t meant for us. Their trajectory was aimed at the facility, where they’d soon ignite a hellfire. Down there, survival was highly unlikely.
21 Jun 2024, 11:23am
Seeing that barrage of missiles coming in wasn’t exactly something to make my day, or start it off very well. There was still that one part of my brain which demanded for me to go back to my bed and just continue being lazy or sleeping throughout the rest of it.

Wasn’t much of an option here, though. While the explosive ordnance had separated from its launchers enough to tell that the trajectory wasn’t exactly me - I was kind of just in the way - it was… still heading a little too close to me, shields or not.

But I did have control over the weapons now. So I quickly did a simple thing - flip their IFF targeting to off and setting them to autonomous mode. That meant the incoming rocket barrage would likely be the turrets’ priority target. Then the ships which had launched them… and make for a good distraction until they were - probably - obliterated. With that done, I pointed the ship’s nose roughly upward and away, keeping power allocation as I had it prior. Weapons would do me no good here. And slammed down on the boost trigger.

“Time to go!”

I was pushed back and down into my seat as the forces of the acceleration took effect on my body, and most of what I could see was an explosive hellscape. Both hitting me, and probably the facility below… but it looked like I’d timed it just right for the shields to hold, and make a stylish exit out of the inferno of missiles and other weapon fire. Time seemed to slow down, allowing me to think. Did have that feeling Azimuth were just going to bomb the lab out of existence… but while sacrificing their own soldiers at the same time? Or were those not Azimuth?

I had to wonder. But only later - I needed to be sure those Black Flight ships didn’t decide us two not-so-Azimuth ships were also witnesses to be disposed of, and didn’t fancy our odds in such a fight. No reason to stick around, anyway. I did keep an eye on the sensors to see what became of the facility, and what its defense turrets possibly achieved.
23 Jun 2024, 1:48pm
“Tailing you tight!”

I eyed the Phantom ahead, throttle wide open, and matched her move for move. My ship’s point defense was a real firecracker, shredding two missiles that came too close. Then, the boost kicked me clear of the immediate kill zone, while below me, it was a full-on inferno. Turrets woke up, hungry for action, spitting lead at the swarm of incoming rockets, but the flood was relentless. First hits were scored here and there, quickly followed by more as one turret blew sky-high, ushering in the second wave of rocket rain.

It was a foregone conclusion that the already damaged facility wouldn’t last much longer. The Fer de Lance fighters peeled off, giving the turrets a wide berth, likely lining up for another rocket wave. That bought us the golden ticket we needed to skedaddle. After gaining some altitude, I watched a good chunk of the facility go up in a symphony of explosions. Rocket strikes were now accompanied by internal detonations. Black Flight was tearing it up.

I punched it away from the moon when a ping from the ‘Shining Digger’ hit my comms, the ghost ship Kasumi had sent on a one-way trip to the sun. Meanwhile, that ship, already cozying up to the sun’s fiery kiss, veered off course.

Your actions, whether intentional or not, helped me to escape. I would like to thank you for that. As your interest in Helix has not escaped me: follow those who want to play God to HIP 106288, to the beginning and to the end.

With that, the ship accelerated its speed and slipped into hyperspace. It was time for us to do the same, because four of the Fer de Lance changed course and flew in our direction at increasing speed.
23 Jun 2024, 2:10pm
My jump was already set and I got to charging up my FSD, not too worried about the Black Flight wing - with some of the downsized components on my Phantom, it would never be caught by a Fer-de-Lance unless it wanted to be, or both ships were within conventional weapon distance to each other.

The odd transmission from the Shining Digger, however, that did, because I had intended for it to be destroyed, and the connection to its systems - until it jumped out, at least - had gotten me the message transmitted through it as well.

I ran the binary bit through one of my decoders while in the hyperspace tunnel, which merely resulted in more numbers. Which, themselves, were then identified as another cipher, and just as quickly decrypted into a proper text.

[PHOENIX PROTOCOL ACTIVE.]

I didn’t immediately recognize what this referred to, but something in my memory said it was important, so I sent that text over to where the other ship had jumped, hoping she remembered better, while setting up for the next jump / now heading back toward the carrier, rather than a random direction away.

“So… I guess, we are headed to, HIP 106288.”

Somehow, the system name seemed vaguely familiar.
23 Jun 2024, 3:30pm
I had my eyes peeled for any tail, and seeing no sign of the Fer de Lance or any other ships on my scanner, I prepped the ship for the next jump.

"HIP 106288? Doesn't ring a bell, but it sure as stars was a nudge in the ribs. Only, did you catch a glimpse of that thing? I've seen my fair share of oddities, but that sight sent a shiver down my spine. The comms are still logged in my ship's memory, take a gander later and tell me what you make of it. Phoenix, though, that's a dead giveaway for ABEL, we've crossed paths with that before. But for now, let's jet off to the carrier."
23 Jun 2024, 3:47pm
“But, why, would it be on that ship? The one we sent into the star.”

That certainly eluded me. My ship emerged from hyperspace, and I moved away from the star to make the next jump - would be in the carrier’s system after that. Nothing on sensors, either, so I at least appeared to have enough of a headstart to the Black Flight wing to not get caught by them.

“And I did not pay attention to the camera. I had the feed turned off, most of the time. To focus, on the comms. But, I guess, we do not need that now, unless… you would like to verify, the location.”

I wasn’t completely sure if I actually knew the system because there was one with an almost identical identifier, but uninhabited and maybe outside the Bubble, at that. Yet one of those two ‘HIP’ systems held an old facility where Azimuth or maybe someone under their wing did some experimenting on people with a substance making them obedient, with some resisting the effects… the purpose of it unclear, to me at least. As it had been abandoned many years ago thanks to an attack, I couldn’t rule out them using it for something else, while nobody paid too much attention to the installation.

If it was the other one, we’d just stumble across yet another clandestine operation. Either way, we knew where to go next. And hopefully, that would then help us get to the next relevant place after, for this ongoing investigation.

I still questioned who, or what, was controlling the ‘Shining Digger’ when its crew was dead. Because there hadn’t been any sign of any kind of automated program or digitized personality in its systems, when I’d poked them.
23 Jun 2024, 5:15pm
“I am dead certain there was nothing aboard that ship when we stumbled upon it. I caught the first glimpse of that thing on a video feed from the station, and in the backdrop, there were screens aplenty, had to be a lab or some command center - it was blabbering about us snooping around in Azimuth property. Maybe it used the Shining Digger as a relay for its message? We might get a clearer picture once we give the comms another look-see and had a chance to sift through what you snagged from the facility.“

I throttled up the Mamba to jump speed. Before long, I'd be docking at my carrier again.
23 Jun 2024, 8:46pm
“It would not need the ship, if it was just used, as a relay. If it is something, that can spread into a system …”

I didn’t see much need to go further with that thought - in my mind, it completed itself, once mentioned to someone else. As I now had.

“But you have your… the, data, too. So you can look it over, yourself. And will we go immediately? I think, we should.”

My instincts were telling me that this was not a matter to delay. Upon reflexion, it was down to the simple reason of Azimuth now definitely being alert to someone knowing about their secret project, and we likely only had so much time to reach that facility - or whatever was in HIP 106288 - before it went on high alert, making the task of recovering anything there significantly more complicated. I hoped that my counterpart had the same ideas.

The matter of whatever was going on with the ship of the dead salvager crew also was on my mind - for one, I wanted to be sure it was not a threat to anybody, except Azimuth, apparently, but also know whatever entity was controlling it, and what it was. My brain wanted to think it was the “thing” which the other woman had seen, but at the same time… I had no way of being sure, so didn’t want to jump to conclusions either.

I stowed those thoughts when my ship arrived in the carrier’s system - no unwelcome company immediately ‘visible’. I made sure I was docked first before I got on comms again.

“So… where will we, talk? Or, look at the data. I guess.”

A question mostly motivated by me not feeling too keen on wandering through a carrier full of strangers, with curves that would have made almost anyone else’s body look small. And the unaboidable staring that would involve.
