Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Oh, I'm just getting on a knee to hug people. Almost. The floors aren't always as clean as yours, you know," and I giggled lightheartedly, then placing my right hand on my chest, "I'm really pleased to see you, you recovering and... That new you being happy with yourself."

Waving goodbye, I walked to the door and, opening it, paused for a second.

"Be careful. I'd hate to know anything happened to you", I said, half-turning to Kasumi.

Getting through the door in my new way of getting through doors, I turned around, leaned forward a little to look through the doorway at my friend again and waved my hand a second time, before leaving.
07 Mar 2024, 6:50pm
I waved back at the second time, when the face poked through the door like a curious observer, and then… just stayed curled up on the couch for a little while longer, reflecting on the nice ‘meeting’, if it could be called that.

It was a good distraction from the war and everything else going on outside, for the moment. I’d make a few final preparations for my departure after finishing that contemplation. And it occurred to me I’d totally forgotten to ask the question I had in mind… I’d just keep it for a later meeting, then. Either written down or in my head.

I was in the middle of chilling in a bar when I got a message.

"Hm... what's that?"

I had a look, and it turned out to be from none other than the one Ina Muir.

"Hello.

Wanted to say thank you for joining the rescue effort back in December, you did a great job out there. Sorry for being so super late, my life had been chaotic for the last couple of months, to the point where it almost ended, And, just when I thought it's getting a bit more calm, as much as it can ever be calm for an officer during the wartime, those torpedoes arrived. And I've put them to good use. So, having a couple of days R&R after the Taranis assault. Everyone's tired as damn heck. Also, visited Kasumi in Aegis place before that, glad to see her recovering and, well, being happy with that new shape of hers you've seen already since she mentioned you several times.

Hope you're doing okay in our insane days. Feel free to reply whenever you want, this is my personal contact and you don't have to punch your messages through our official lines.

- Best regards,
Ina Muir, AXDF"

'Well, isn't that something ...', I thought, and found somewhere to sit rather than observe ships coming and going through a window, to reply properly.

Hey.

Gotta say, I wasn't sure if you were dead or... well, should start at the first maybe. I'd caught on you were at the Aegis hospital on Duamta when I visited Kas. Or, maybe they told me, not that I'm sure exactly how they found out I might know you. Doc that I met said I couldn't go in for a visit because of... what was it, sterility rules or maybe just not having someone in the way for critical patients. Whatever. I left a little message or note, but I guess you might not've seen or gotten it. Was wondering if you were actually still, you know, around.

You'll have to tell me how they put you back into one piece. No one was sure you'd survive when I was there. And I'm doing fine-ish, currently in a station near the Oya Titan. One that isn't getting melted by caustic projectiles, mind you, so things could be worse. Haven't done much lately, took time off, and was waiting to see what those torpedoes do. I'd guess their effectiveness is proven now, huh?

Maybe we should meet. Just tell me where. Better than chatting through text, right? And I did have something I wanted your opinions on.

- Jana

I sent the message off and decided to wait, see if I'd get a response quickly. Not like I was in a rush to go anywhere, still not quite feeling ready to go back out to the fighting. Even if I likely wouldn't get involved in the possibly much more dangerous job of disposing of a Titan, with my current outlook on things.
08 Mar 2024, 1:45am
Jana's reply got me in the middle of absolutely nothing. Maybe except laying flat on my bed and watching stupid videos on the network since Mion was on her shift and the weather outside was kind of crap with heavy wind and rain.

"Hey,

Yeah, glad you're doing relatively okay too. Glad you're alive, for a start. And thank you for at least trying to visit me, even if I wasn't able to see that anyway, I was in the ICU and unconscious, and they don't let visitors in the ICU as far as I understand, but that's, kind of, obvious, intensive care and all that.

'Fine-ish' is the best kind of sitrep in these days, I guess, but I hope things are going to change. I hate this war as many other people do, and, whilst wanting it just to disappear, I have to fight it. So, yeah, I've been to the Taranis and that was a long siege that has made people quite exhausted, we've been given two days off and I guessed I could finally send you something and maybe meet you somewhere in person, for the first time. They say it's good to have friends, but you have to make friends first.

I can send you the coordinates of the camp I'm assigned to, but only if you're really into that spartan military mood. We're effectively a refugee camp, people live in metal prefab-containers and all that. So, if you have better places in mind, I could fly there.

- Best regards,
Ina Muir, AXDF"

I hit 'Send' and unpaused the last video I've been watching, namely the Torment Test Of Manticore Tormentor on a channel dedicated to Pioneer Supplies weapon mockery, and hells they're really good at that: the poor thing has been failing miserably so far with no visible chances to redeem itself.
08 Mar 2024, 2:08am
The reply to that message came a little faster than I expected, but I didn't mind. Wasn't like I had anything better to do, for the moment. So I replied.

Alive isn't that difficult when you've just been staying out of most trouble for a week, or three. Haven't been keeping track. Needed a break from fighting Thargoids to not break my sanity further, anyway. Not a fan of those stupid death sounds they make. If they didn't want us to feel bad for killing them, they shouldn't have invaded the Bubble.

As for meeting points, well, it sounds better than the awful Imperial decor I used to have to tolerate. That's one thing I'd be happy to see a Thargoid unleash a caustic missile barrage on. Anyway, I don't really have too many good ideas for where to do the thing. Most places I know are too close to the Titan or just swarming with the funny space flowers until the Titan leaves or becomes a pile of slag. Whichever happens first. (And I doubt it would survive its fusion core turning into the biggest bomb ever.)

- J

I hit send. A waiter came by to ask if I wanted a drink, but I declined. Not right now. Not only was I not thirsty, my low tolerance before things started to look funny in front of my eyes was to be kept in mind, if I'd take off again soon.
08 Mar 2024, 2:59am
"Hm," I emitted my classic sound that has a dozen of meanings, reading the reply.

"Ah, it's easier when you don't have much sanity to keep, I'd say. And I totally understand the disdain, those Imperials are making me sick as well from time to time. Imagine meeting a bunch of them on station after getting their damn glossy flying bucket out of the Thargoid's claws, and they have enough arrogance to tell me that my ship looks 'awfully out of place in a port of such high standards'. Bloated pricks.

So, okay, sending you the coords and the geomarker with the attachment, it isn't charted on any PilotFed maps but don't be too scared, no illegal stuff. Just a bunch of people trying to stay alive in the mad world. When hailed, reply with "Ms.Muir invited me, code 2240-2574", and nobody would give you a bad eye. Also, they should notify me personally so I'd meet you, it's easy for any outsider to get lost in those lookalike metal blocks.

- Will be waiting for you,
Ina Muir, AXDF"

Sending the message, I called the local traffic controllers, telling them about a guest from the 'outside world' and unpaused the video once more. Watching those clown guns underperforming badly has always been an amusement.
08 Mar 2024, 3:19am
Reading the message, I decided to reply first, before going anywhere.

You have no idea how much experience I've got with the Imps. But that's one of those subjects best talked about in person, I'd say. If you're interested in hearing me rant about them, at least, that is.

Will make my way over in a little bit. How long, depends on distance. Have the ship set up to go and mess with some Thargoids who want to stick their noses (do they even have noses?) into our territory without asking. You can imagine it's not too good for long-distance travel, so if I need to stick a scoop on it that takes a moment to swap out. Still faster than waiting to refuel at a port.

Anyway, I'll see you over there. And I guess since you've seen Kasumi already, I won't be holding any surprises about that body of hers.

I stood up after sending the message on its way and left. Nothing to pay, since I ordered nothing. Hopefully, that assembly of metal blocks wouldn't be too boring to take a look around in. Or whatever I'd end up doing around there.
08 Mar 2024, 5:10am
"Sure, you could rant as long as you want because secretly I like to listen to people ranting about something I'd rant too. Weather should get back to normal real soon so I guess we won't be limited to sitting in my room. Maybe you could meet a person that's dear to me, but, depends on timings: she's an officer in the local resistance forces and on her shift at the moment, several hours left. I wanted to go with her, actually, since more than half of my people are on R&R too after the Taranis, but, can you imagine that, I can't, and that's an order, I should rest blah blah blah. What an irony. Apparently, they're still watching me and my performance after the discharge. Can't argue though, they want to be sure I'm ready for the responsibilities. But that's a long story.

See you soon then, and safe travels.

- Best regards,
Ina Muir, AXDF"

'Send'. Dammit, actually, that's the first time I'm actually waiting for a guest, in our... Town of sorts. Yeah. Town of sorts. I'm used to it, and you can't ask for more under our circumstances, but... Argh. I don't think that other people may think 'she's living in a tiny metal box in a pile of lookalike metal boxes' looking at me. At least our prefabs weren't in the very thick of it, placed next to the landing area.
08 Mar 2024, 10:06am
Took about twenty to thirty minutes to get to ‘the place’, with making some seven or eight jumps before picking up some fuel - said place being an unimpressive looking bunch of metal boxes stacked on top of each other in a roughly city-like manner, forming “streets” between them, and a few ship-size hangars, also metal of course, dotted around, not too far from some simple landing areas where the terrain had been arranged. I got buzzed during approach and responded using the ‘code’ I got… which was “pinned” on the comms tab because I both wouldn’t have memorized and wasn’t bothered to memorize it.

“Ms. Muir invited me. Code 2240-2574.”

“Understood. Proceed to the pad allocated to your ship, no funny flying. And enjoy your visit - she’ll have a surprise waiting for you. Flight control out.”

Makeshift settlement, but still sticking to formality and regulations, as expected of something military. One of the pads lit up with a holo-marker corresponding to the one I had on my HUD, and where the nav compass pointed, amidst some fifty or so concrete ‘pads’, next to the hangars. So I took my Krait over there, at least trying not to interfere with any other flight paths while keeping the speed reasonable.

Had to wonder what that ‘surprise’ would be, exactly, as I got up after the ship landed. Ditching the suit as I - probably - wouldn’t be needing it here and just began to head out of the ship with my usual attire of the black and red cargo pants, tight-ish black top and an open red jacket with elbow-length sleeves. External temperature readings definitely still allowed for it, the planet seeming to maybe be around autumn, though it looked hard to tell. Trees were almost entirely still green.

Found Ina outside, walking toward the ship to greet me, wearing the usual - boots, pants with spacious pockets not unlike mine, jacket… and I had to look up. A lot. Mouth got stuck in the ‘Open’ position, my finger raised as if to object, except in this case it was more an indication of ‘What the hell am I supposed to say here’. My brain eventually settled on what I’d heard prior.

“… they didn’t say you would be the surprise.”
08 Mar 2024, 10:26am
"Hello there, and welcome to... The Town Of Sorts," I made a welcoming gesture, making a broad arc with my right arm and then pointing to the buildings behind me. "Hope you didn't get into any trouble on your way. And, thank you for coming."

"Nice ship by the way," I nodded towards her Krait. "Timeless classic."

"And yeah, I'm the surprise. Maybe. Can't say we have many surprises hidden around the place... But, you wanted to meet me. And, well, I didn't mind meeting you. So... Here I am."

I stood on my tiptoes for a moment, with both my hands behind my slightly arched back, and looked into the sky, smiling. As if making "yes, I'm shinin'!" photo.

"And, congratulations on being my first guest in that humble place," returning to a usually-relaxed stance, I pointed a finger up into the air. Then, lowering my voice a little as if making a comment, added: "I guess it's the best way to say I don't know a single damn thing about what to do with guests here because mostly we have refugees and recruits. Sooo... Maybe we could figure out something."

“Yeah, uh …”

I shifted around on my feet awkwardly. First I had that one friend with completely overexaggerated curves, and now my other was two and a half meters. Or something.

“Maybe you could start by explaining, this.” I gestured with my right hand from top to bottom of Ina’s body. “And I’m starting to think I have really weird taste in friends.”
08 Mar 2024, 10:49am
"And who said that being weird is somehow bad?" I said in a joking tone which also pointed out that the question was rhetorical.

"Well, first, a generator explosion almost turned me into mist. Then, I woke up in the Aegis HQ hospital like month and a half later, being like this," the made up legend has been significantly easier to present to someone I didn't have any close connection with, even if that person was friendly. "Doc said they had to put me in a coma and pump so much progenitor cell and nano stuff into my body that it reactivated the growth as if I was a kid again. Can't say it's painful when you're unconscious and more than a half of your bones are broken already."

"I also kind of barely remember waking up in the middle of the process with doc explaining things to me... But, barely."
08 Mar 2024, 11:25am
“Oh. That has to have been an… interesting, experience.”

Not much else I could say to that, for the moment. Was a bit weird to stand next to this weirdness while not used to it yet, though.

“I’m surprised that stuff can even have such a side effect. Then again, I guess they’re usually not used to try keeping a basically dead person alive.”

I paused, and lowered my voice after looking around.

“So, since you saw Kasumi… what do you think about her body? Because hell, she’s… huge.”

‘In the right places’, I added in thoughts.
08 Mar 2024, 11:52am
"Well," I shrugged, spreading my arms slightly. "Everyone's going to say it's too much. It may be really a bit too much, but, phah, who am I to judge? The main, and only point here: she's happy. Every one of us needs a bit of happiness, even if it comes through weirdness."

"Big weirdness," comedically raising my eyebrow and tilting my head to the side a little, I added after a pause.

"And I guess it's a bonus for those who could notice, I really liked her eyes. They're like... Diamonds. But, blue. And with pupils."

"What I'm more concerned about is... Other effects. Hells, I've no idea what that means, but being... There," I nodded towards the sky above, as if mentioning the space and her Titan episode, "had certainly done something. Like, her skin is white like snow but her temperatures are perfect, that...", I was about to mention the glowing sign but timely remembered she might've not wanted it to be known to other people without her own permission, and I couldn't actually figure out if Jana was on that list or not. Thankfully, it was less than a tenth of a second delay. "...that odd memory loss, she could barely remember people significant to her like Seo, but some little things remained intact... I'm not an expert on amnesia, but, that's odd."

And I didn't mention voices. That was certainly a bit too much, and too personal for her.

"Also I'm concerned about her... Nature. Being exposed by Aegis. Okay, that was a last ditch effort to find her and it actually worked, but now she might have a heckload of trouble."
08 Mar 2024, 12:10pm
I frowned at that last mention.

“Like what? Azimuth? Those idiots couldn’t even catch a single ship while catching the pilot by surprise some time last year. If you remember that time Seo told us about Nemesis and conveniently got attacked by unidentified ships near Azimuth’s headquarters in the Bubble. I’m not sure they’d be able to get her - Kira, or Kasumi, whichever - then, either. They’ve just been useless morons since that idiot fired his superweapon and got slapped back in the face by those supposedly mindless and inferior ‘bugs’.”

I ended the little rant there.

“Anyway, I noticed her eyes. Can’t remember if I said anything, but they look pretty nice. And the way they reflect light or seem to shine sometimes… well, that’s neat, too. Not that I have any idea why they’re like this now.”

I paused.

“For the rest of her… uh… form, hell, she looks hot. And maybe I’d like to talk about that somewhere a little more… private.”

I looked off to a ship landing nearby, prompting me to raise my voice to still be heard.

And less noisy.
