Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

I looked at the landing ship. White Chieftain, ID AX323F. The pilot hastily tried to align the craft with the markings on the concrete and seemingly slapped the main switch being still a couple of metres up in the air, so the ship twitched and hit the ground with a loud clang, followed by a screech of metal brushing against the concrete: forward and lateral speeds weren't reduced to zeroes properly. Marking the landing spot with a few new grooves and cracks in the improvised landing pad, the ship stopped and finally went silent in a second.

"Seventh wing, Philip Brennan...," then I noticed a few nasty holes surrounded by molten metal on the upper part of the ship, near the heat vents, with barely visible traces of white vapour adding to the engine exhaust. "...Coolant leak, main circuit. Probably the vents on that side got stuck too. Friggin bastards."

Emerging from my thoughts, I turned my face to Jana again.

"Forgive him the noise," I nodded towards the landed ship. "Poor rookies have to pull big folks' weight since my better pilots had like six hours of sleep in three days with that whole Taranis thing."

"Sooo... We can go to my, khm, apartment. Liveable container, phah. Or the ship. You've seen her, that white Fer-de-Lance, in a hangar nearby at the moment."

“Whichever one you prefer. I had to make do with those crappy tiny living spaces you get when working at those settlements with prefab buildings everywhere for a few years. And got lucky none of those lunatics who slaughter everyone for a few credits or materials ‘visited’.”

I made air quotes at the end of the sentence, and paused for a short second.

“I don’t think Kasumi would fit into one of those bunk beds with those hips of hers, to be honest.”
08 Mar 2024, 1:09pm
"Shit," I stated. "I know what you're talking about. Former station tech."

"Let's go to the hangar then. My living place barely has enough space for me alone, with that landing pad of mattresses on the floor, phah," pointing my finger at the ground, I drew a wide rectangle. "The reason why I stay there might sound weird, especially when heard from a pilot, but I prefer sleeping in a building. At least that box."

Actually, the reason was the current placement of Kittenshine, but that was too much of a personal detail.

"And it has a shower cabin! Like, a proper one."
08 Mar 2024, 1:22pm
“A custom-size shower cabin, or do you fight one made for an ‘ordinary’ human?”

That idea amused me a little.

“Not sure you’d fetch a job as a station tech now. Might be difficult to fit into those maintenance tunnels routinely. Or at least the narrower ones which aren’t made to drive one of those funny vehicles through. And a stack of matresses in the low gravity of the inner ring? Might not stay together very well.”

The idea kind of reminded me of Kasumi’s “pillow tower” on her bed. I began to follow Ina to the hangar, and watched it open to reveal a white-painted Fer-de-Lance, after some struggling with a remote maybe. Unless it was a custom-size one too, I didn’t watch that closely.

“I guess now would be the time to say the mandatory ‘Nice ship’ comment. I was planning to get one of these, but maybe not painted white. Prefer black or red. Or both together in a mixture.”
08 Mar 2024, 10:34pm
"NNnnnope," I grinned, held my arms very close to my body and made a half-step to the side as if trying to squeeze into a tight compartment or a closet. "Regular-sized one. I can't really turn there but... Better than nothing I say."

"And... Marshmallow," I nodded towards the ship. "We've been together for like ages. The first 'serious' ship I bought and the only ship registered on my name now. Did extremely well thrashing the corpo scum that tried to get a hold of independent systems. Now, thrashing the Thargoids, none less violent."

"And it's a pleasant ship to fly outside of combat. If you don't mind a relatively small jump distance. I've taken her to Colonia once. Took a hell lot of time but no regrets."

"We mostly run Alliance stuff," I stretched my arm pointing outside of the hangar, "Chieftains and Challengers. AXDF was an Alliance group at its very dawn but we quickly separated and went independent, though their ships are good and we keep buying and using them en masse. Have some Kraits too. And a bit of Fed stuff. No Imperial crap, those waxed glossy buckets are nowhere near the gritty reality we face."

"Pffff," I half-smiled ironically, then stood silent for a few seconds, looked left and right, made a slight shrug and stated, "As you can see already I've no idea what to do with guests 'from the outside', phah."
08 Mar 2024, 10:50pm
"I don't really mind talking ships. You might guess from my appearance that I'm not too much into what people think is 'girly' stuff.", I casually replied.

"Sitting somewhere might be better to talk, though. In there?"

I pointed toward the ship.

"My first one other than the Sidewinder was an Eagle. Combat, mostly, then got myself a Vulture. Haven't really been in much other than the Krait you saw me land in, but I did get a Diamondback for those cases I don't feel like taking a whole day just to get to the Guardian sites or some such place. Or for that idiot Palin who thinks you need to fly a few thousand light years to get him to do work on your thrusters. Whatever the logic behind that is."

I stopped that rant before it got any worse.

"So, uh, anyway. I did get myself a Challenger recently and got it engineered, set up for Thargoid defense. Can't say I like it too much. Verts are nice, so you're less likely to end up stalling your movement in front of a Medusa or what have you, but controls are a little too responsive and twitchy. So I haven't really used it since taking it out for a first spin."

I paused for a moment.

"Oh, and before I forget, how tall were you before this, exactly? Can't imagine it just rolled over without a few stares to show up like this somewhere, either. Or to be at head height with someone when you're sat down."
09 Mar 2024, 1:29am
"Pff-fff-ff-ff", I let out a muffled giggle, covering my mouth with a hand. "I'm not talking 'girly stuff' at all, the fact that you landed here, not turned around and hit the boosters in a mere sight of this place already means something."

"But I... Uh. You being a first guest, a person I barely know, in a place where you have almost nothing else to do rather than sleep before your next shift?"

"Let's go onboard then. If you think about buying a Fer-de-Lance, consider that a tour," I waved towards the back of Marshmallow, where the main airlock was. "I'm a fan of the ship, but I have no intention to sell it, or a ship of the same model, to you, so... It's better than dealing with, khm, dealer."

"And, if you're interested... It was 185. I've been a chonker all the time, phah. Powerlifting'n'pizza, you get that. Survived more than once going through some real shit thanks to that resilience."
09 Mar 2024, 1:54am
"So, kind of the opposite of me. Except for the height. I would've only had to look up a little before... well, this happened, I guess. Not that you seem to really mind it. Or that it makes people be weirded out. I even get the impression you like it more because of it being weird."

I breathed out. That was... still a bit of an odd subject, for now. I began to follow to the back of the ship.

"I was definitely not looking to buy this thing from you. Rather have my own... or, as much of my own as it gets. I'd prefer to get my hands on a new one, not used by anyone before, but with the ship sellers, you never know. They'll say it's new and when you get it someone's remains of a pack of crisps are on the pilot's seat." I paused a moment before adding to that. "... hopefully only the leftovers of a pack of crisps."

That statement could be interpreted in a number of ways - that was the exact intention, too. Not every ship changed owners because the previous one was still alive, but there were other possibilities of undesirable remains on a seat. Some of them definitely warranting outright replacement.

"Anyway, if this is your only ship, I'm guessing you both have some fun history together."
09 Mar 2024, 2:17am
"Yeah, those dealers are shady sometimes," I nodded, listening to Jana as we walked to the airlock. Politely, I've been walking at a slower pace. "It's better for the manufacturer to sell as many new ships as possible but I guess they have some kind of a story going on, like, rollbacks, hidden contracts, all that."

"Thankfully, I'm a tech. Of sorts. Was. Kind of. And still there's nobody around this place who knows more about FDLs than I do. I can't always tell almost new ships from really new ones, but can certainly figure out if a ship is used, saw some combat or long travels, but was made to look new."

"Here," as we both climbed the ladder to the main airlock, I entered the access code and it opened with a familiar metal click of the security mechanism, followed by a deep thunk of the disengaging door retainers, which echoed through the mostly empty hangar. "Follow me. Yeah, we both have some stories to tell."

"Weird pilot and her weird ship. Or, maybe, weird ship and her weird pilot."
09 Mar 2024, 3:02am
"Yeah, can't say I've really got much of a story about me and my ships. I've only had that Krait... I don't know, might actually be getting to two years, or two and a half. I'd have to look at when I bought the thing, but it's spent most of its time blowing no-good pirates out into the void, or dealing with that idiot who thought he was our salvation drawing in eight giant Thargoid motherships instead. You might've noticed or read it in my logs that one is basically sitting right on my home at the moment."

I sighed.

"Yeah, anyway. I got this ship and it was like almost a perfect match. Only thing I don't like about it is it not really jumping that far, but it'd probably feel like luxury compared to something like, well, this one." I gestured at the floor and surrounding walls. "And that a medium doesn't carry much cargo, but you don't see me doing much hauling. Tends to make me fall asleep in the seat unless some pirate wants to make things interesting, or end up as scrap themselves."

"Still don't think I'd make the journey to Colonia with a Krait. Not because I dislike the ship or anything, but like, why would I bother going out there? And with a thirty or so light year jump range? Sure as hell am not an explorer and hitching a ride on a carrier would make me feel bored just as quickly. And, yeah... me and bored are not a mixture you'd really want to see together. Which is something you might've noticed in those... uh, 'experiments' in VR."

I took a moment, mostly to breathe.

"So, how does fitting through a ship work? I mean, interior hallways are probably fine, but maintenance shafts and vents are maybe a little too small. Not that I go into them - I'm far from a tech person and at best I could do things like replace a basic power coupling behind a wall panel somewhere if it got blown out, and there's a spare part around. Never even considered trying to mod my own ship, other than allowed third-party software. But I've seen how small those things get."
09 Mar 2024, 8:47am
"Yup," I shrugged as we walked down the main corridor to the cockpit. "Jumping is... Not the strongest. I have that Guardian booster thingy and a giant fuel scoop stored to go somewhere far, but, mostly, I don't need that, operating from a ground base or a carrier."

"Nevertheless... PilotFed promoted me to Elite Explorer a long time ago, phah."

We reached the cockpit airlock, and, grabbing the handle, I opened the door and took a step to the side, gesturing towards the custom pilot seat with my free hand.

"Ta-daaaam!"

"So yeah, fitting through the tunnels isn't for me anymore, but... On the other hand, I'm now strong as damn heck and can handle really heavy parts. Anyway, we have repair crews to do all the stuff with our ships here. And, hey, I'm an officer."

"That doesn't mean tinkering is a 'too much of a dirty job' for me now...," I added in a more quiet and a little sarcastic tone, holding my palm to the side of my mouth like whispering a secret, "...But that actually does mean that as soon as we land, I must sort a shitload of other stuff out."

"Maybe, one day, I'd think of purchasing some kind of a remote-controlled robot to send it crawling down the maintenance shafts. Anyway... Feel free to look and explore. And, one of the lockers, to the right of the main panel, there's a lot of tea, coffee, in self-heating cans, self-cooling cans, whatever, also spiced meat jerky and stuff, all that. Military grade treats. Also, you can sit. On the floor, phah. Or the co-pilots. And tell me more about anything you want, if you want. I may not exactly be into... some of your things... but, I have ears and I use them to listen."

"And yeah, also, this thing...", I pointed towards the rifle, strapped to the side of the pilot seat, "...you haven't seen it." And, winking briefly, added, half-whispering, "But it's hella cool."
09 Mar 2024, 10:56am
I looked at the oversized pilot's seat with hands on the hips, divided between different feelings, before I turned back toward my host.

"Okay, two things. One, that looks more like a damn throne for a giant. Two, that's so ridiculously stupid. ... in a good way."

I decided to remain standing for now, if just so I didn't have to force my neck into an uncomfortable angle to look at the person opposite of me.

"Not sure what to think of that gun. Never really took too much of an interest in them. Well, the out-of-ship stuff, that is, anyway. For the most part, I prefer not leaving it unless I have to, and for poorly equipped run of the mill scavengers, you don't really need military grade anyhow, and I haven't run into anyone organized. Or organized enough."

"Not hungry or thirsty though, thanks. And you've got to need a lot more food now to keep that body running, no?"

Didn't quite seem like the point to go into some of the more 'personal' stuff yet, given that this was the first, proper, real meeting, over just screwing around in a VR environment like complete idiots who look like they lost all their sanity.

"And since you brought up that robot thing, maybe Kasumi should think of getting one for herself, too. Something tells me she'd have trouble fitting into those places now too. Or, at least, there'd be a lot of cursing and squeezing involved. Hopefully without observers."
09 Mar 2024, 11:26am
Figuring out we aren't going to go anywhere from the cockpit for at least a little while, I sat on the floor, slowly, even lazily placing my legs crossed in front of me. Like a very weird and utterly unexpected version of Buddha.

"Ah, that's a gift," I looked at the rifle. "From a bunch of independent folks, for flushing the Feds out of their place. Whilst I've been fighting, they... Convinced a military convoy to unload their goods before reaching the destination. I haven't been an AX pilot all the time, you know. But that's... Kind of, in the past now. But the gun is great. Love it."

"And, regarding Kasumi and her furniture predicaments. There were, actually, observers," turning my face back to Jana, I smiled in a goofy way. "At least one, and you're talking to her right now. No, not pulling her out of the maintenance shaft, simply watching the suffering of an armchair, but that was, in a way, funny. Also, Seo hugged her, like, automatically. I didn't, because I'm a polite kitten. I asked first, and, you may guess, she still doesn't like it. Especially with me I think, phah."

"Food...", I found myself lost in thoughts for a second. "Reasonable. Everything looks smaller now anyway," I found that kind of answer the most truth-like.

"Anyway, that first reply you sent me. You said you wanted my opinions on... Something. I guess it's about ships, and FDLs in particular? Since you already said you want to buy one."
09 Mar 2024, 1:22pm
I nodded, then answered properly.

"Well, see, I wanted to set one up for Thargoid fighting. Within the Bubble. Even before I - that thing in the, I mean, near the Titan." I shook my head, as if to shake off that annoying lack of focus. "Sorry. Seems like I might be a little scatterbrained today. What I'm trying to say is, maybe that sold me on the idea a little more, and it'll still be a moment before the Titans go anywhere, so I figured I'd ask you for advice on that before going for it. I am not the greatest pilot in the world and... well, I'm not feeling so sure about the lack of armor reinforcement if you still want to be able to fix damage without needing or having a station nearby for those quick fixes. Or dropping hull repair capability for it to last a little longer between port repairs near an attacked port. But first ..."

I looked in the direction of the co-pilot's seat, since I would be here for a little while.

"Can I spin that thing around while the ship's stationary? So I can look at you, and well... we'd be at head height then. And I'd have paid to see Kas squeeze herself into one of those chairs made for a normal person. Already looks like she can barely fit through a door because she's so wide. But she sat on the bed in that big ball for most of the time. I did get her to stand out for a moment so I could really get an idea of her size, and well, it's... something. Might've, uh... poked her as well. Just couldn't resist."

I blushed a bit at that admission. In hindsight, it felt a little embarrassing.
09 Mar 2024, 4:29pm
"Yeah, you absolutely can. Lean forward and reach your hand under the right armrest. There's a lever, pull it up and use your feet to spin around, and release after you're comfortable. Left one is for height." I nodded towards the almost always unused copilot's place and pointed my finger in the general direction of its base. "And don't look at me like I'm weird, I know, phah. Threw the electronics away and installed those shortly after joining the AXDF. So if you buy a FDL, you'll get... Softie peasant style seat adjustments."

"You may call me paranoid, but we're getting zapped and EMPd several times a day, I don't want to have to deal with a fire right under my arse even if they say it's low-voltage and shielded, phah. More iron, less finicky stuff."

"And, about FDLs, listen..."

My eyes locked on Jana and my lips slowly began stretching into a wild grin. Second after second, in silence. Staring. Not even a blink, not even a little twitch. I froze in place, became static, only the grin, it was becoming more and more maniacal.

Then, reaching the desired level of tension, I let out, in a particularly loud, somewhat mentoring, somewhat derogatory tone:

"Forget about it."

Another second of silence, and then, the same tone, maybe just a little less loud.

"FDLs aren't for the Thargoid fights. Get away and go terrorise some worthless hoodlums in the asteroids."

A second of silence again... And I relaxed both my face and my body, made a short sharp exhale, and continued with what's called my usual voice.

"That's what those fuckin 'mentors', 'professionals', other pompous bloated arseholes said me back then, and I just said fuck you scumbags, I love the ship and I'm doing the stuff my way. And look where I am now, a Flight Leader in an AX organisation. Hundreds of confirmed kills. Hydras included. Scored a Cyclops on my first real patrolling day. You're talking to a person who says 'Yummy!' on the open comms seeing two Hydras."

I leaned forward, pressing my both hands against my knees, looked at Jana again and winked.

"And you just said me you want one of these too..."
