Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Oh, I just thought it was... I don't know. Odd, to still be wearing it, when I do not need to. And it, I guess, keeps... certain things, from floating up into my face. But I usually just walk around here in my normal clothes."

'ANd maybe don't mind it too much if it happens', I added in my thoughts while I shrugged, though avoiding eye contact... as I, generally, just always did.

"But the prisoner, I thought, we should 'talk' to her, together. I would like to avoid anything violent, at first, or if it is possible. Because, I think, anyone from Azimuth might just recognize me. Which could be... 'fun'. Except for the body... that has changed. But it could just make the reaction even better."

I certainly wasn't planning on any kind of torture to be performed here. And a somewhat silly, teasing look slipped on my face, imagining how that woman might react to not just seeing me, but my "expanded" proportions as well. Though the former was more likely to get the reaction I wanted. And, for now, she'd still be stuck in the medical bay, unconscious and kept that way until ready to be moved into a holding cell. So I turned my attention - and body - back to the holo-display.

"What do you make of this site, referred to in the data?"
02 May 2024, 9:59pm
“Oh.”

I gave Kasumi a sidelong glance, the gears in my head grinding as I tried to make sense of this strange information. “Normal clothes would be… well, normal, I guess?” I said after a moment, feeling like a right fool, while I had the feeling that I didn't really understand what this was all about.

“Well… whatever. I thought you were suggesting I should convince the prisoner..." I shrugged nonchalantly.

"But hey, if you think it'll give us an edge, be my guest. Not sure if a grunt would recognize you, though. Despite all the setbacks, Azimuth's still a pretty big fish in the galaxy."

Then I turned my focus to the data flickering on the holo-display before me, as requested.

"I'm not quite sure what to make of this... Maybe it's some kind of hub? There’s definitely a lot of back-and-forth traffic... and from what you’ve pieced together from the logs, it suggests this place can’t be too far off. Look here - the ships that touched down at the outpost you visited, they barely loaded any fuel before heading back."

I swiveled my head back her way.

“It’s not much, but it might come in handy when we grill the captive. At least we’ll know she’s feeding us a line if she claims the target’s a long haul away.”
02 May 2024, 10:16pm
"Maybe Azimuth is big, but they have a... special interest, in me. I already showed you why.", I replied.

"So they might recognize me. And what I said about clothes... I... don't know. This - " I gestured at my head, drawing a circle at its side with my finger. " - is still 'repairing'. Or, healing, maybe. So it... does not always work too well. Especially after going through something that was a lot of effort, like fighting."

It was definitely beginning to feel like it was getting a bit much, so I went quiet for a little bit, steadily breathing in and out, with my eyes closed for most or all of that time. Then I looked at the holo-display again.

"Maybe I will just share this data with you, so you can work on it, too, maybe find more. I will let my own programs run on it for the... what's left of the day. But I am getting tired. So, maybe, we should meet again tomorrow. The soldier I caught is still getting looked after, anyway, so she will not die in a few hours. But we can't question her, yet. Though, if we at least had a distance... we could limit a search to the systems which are within that 'bubble', at least. If we cannot recover the exact one from the folder."

Neural input to my wrist computer made it so that I could send the data of the operation I'd 'visited' over without directly accessing its physical counterpart. I wasn't quite sure how it worked, not being aware of any - human - implants within my brain, but I'd never questioned it due to its practicality... when I was too lazy to work with the interface, anyway.
02 May 2024, 10:58pm
“Sure thing, it’s definitely worth a shot… I reckon. As soon as she’s back on her feet,” I said, my voice laced with genuine concern as I gave Kasumi a long, assessing look. “...and you, too. Hang in there, Kasumi. We need you up and running, sharpish...”

“...And you’re right, it’s been one heck of a long day. But also a pretty thrilling one. And I’d say we’ve held our own quite nicely,” I added with a smirk. "Had no idea you're such a super soldier."

“As to the data... I’m not entirely convinced your programs here aren’t a cut above mine, but I’ll see if I can make heads or tails of this. I’ll leave the AI chip with you though; you’re clearly more adept with this tech than I am,” I said, pointing at the chip on the table.

I paused, my concern for Kasumi growing more evident. “You good? Then I'll jet off, can’t have you collapsing here now.,” I added with a wink, trying to keep the mood light with a joking tone that belied my anxiousness.
02 May 2024, 11:13pm
"I'm just... sleepy. It will be fine. But maybe today is not the right time to keep working."

As if on cue, a yawn slipped out of me.

"Yes... definitely need to get sleep. And I will let the analysis of the chip run during that time, too."

I rubbed my eyes, then saw the profile analyzer which also lay there. It had kind of slipped my attention, so I quickly took the digital profile data from it. Maybe that would be useful to some end, whether that was just future facility access, or cross-referencing it with different files to see if it was what the researcher had worked on.

"You should... probably not forget that thing, here. I do not need it."
03 May 2024, 11:59am
I snatched up the Profile Analyser and threw another glance at Kasumi.

"Thanks for reminding me. Can't just leave my beloved 'Sesame' behind, can I?" I said with a wink.

Then I bid my farewell and strutted off to my own carrier. I was buzzing with curiosity to see if Kasumi's top-notch gear could pry more secrets from the data we nabbed, but I had to admit that I was a bit worried about her. Lately, her antics were a tad... well, quirky. But like she said, it's probably just because of her personal history and a touch of exhaustion. I reckon it's tougher to lug around a voluptuous bod like hers on some mission compared to a beanpole like mine.

I fed the data she gave me into my systems and kicked off the analysis. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, even if my tech lab isn't exactly state-of-the-art like hers.

What still bugged me was that light show I witnessed at the outpost I infiltrated. I wondered if it was really as normal as Kasumi made it out to be. Ever since then, I've had this odd tingling in my hand - the one that touched the contents of the crate - even though I was suited up in my Maverick gear.
03 May 2024, 12:35pm
Being near that woman still caused an odd doscomfort I yet had to explain to myself - something beyond the ‘natural’ that came from the differing background and approach to mine. At least, in some ways.

Only some of it had faded when she left, though, thanks to me being tired, and the Thargoid voices going off in my head, thanks to the continued Titan nonsense and whatnot. So, rather than keep working, I dragged myself over to my personal cabin and stripped out of armor and suit, took off my boots to float around lazily for a bit, then took myself to the sleeping bag on the wall parallel to the carrier’s direction of movement after nearly falling asleep, barely mustering the energy to do that and take off my clothes as well. Sleeping in underwear would be much more comfy.

—————

The following day …

Results today looked more promising. I wore my ordinary civilian attire, the simple black pants and shirt, plus gloves. Always had gloves on, and right now, they were flicking through the data displays.

Some of them were dedicated to the non-Azimuth related data, which, unsurprisingly, was all about shady corporate stuff, some of it Imperial business. Something that my pirate-freedom fighter companion would probably appreciate having.

The other two - one showed the detailed analysis of the AI relic chip, the second the, effectively, restored data of the Azimuth folder. Results of letting everything run overnight to get done. With that in mind, I sent a message over to the other carrier, holding position not too far.

It looks like… my stuff got everything done as well as it is going to get. Should be enough to make a next step, though we can still question the Azimuth soldier if it could be useful.

Come over when you would like?

- K

With nothing more to do than wait, for the time being, I sat down nearby, still within that data lab. Felt more comfortable than standing, even if I had to hold down a little to make sure I didn’t float back up. Particularly when my sleep hadn’t quite been the most restful, and I had something of a headache - just enough to be really annoying, but not to stop me from doing anything… and I was waiting for a painkiller to kick in, too.
03 May 2024, 1:18pm
I woke up from a bizarre dream, where a bunch of freaky red statues were gabbing away at me in a circle. Not a word made sense, and my blank stares just made them yammer on even more. It was a twisted dream, but not that scary. I shook off the cobwebs with a feeling of… frustration?.. rather than fear.

I hit the showers, got dressed in a flash, and popped a couple of food pills on my way to the computer room where I’d kicked off the data analysis. Before I could peek at the results, Kasumi’s invite pinged in. I mulled over it for a hot second, then stashed the result of the analysis in a data orb, snagging it with me for simplicity’s sake.

Curiosity was eating at me - I was wondering if my sometimes stubborn but determined ally had dug up something juicy, which, given her fancy tech gear, wasn’t out of the realm of possibility. But first, I was itching for a spin in my zippy little ship. Hopping between two different carriers might seem like a hassle for a joint investigation, but hey, it gave me the perfect excuse to punch the throttle.

Off I strutted to the hangar where my Viper was parked, slipped into a flashy flight suit that screamed ‘race day,’ climbed into my ride, and blazed a trail to the Abode, generously hammering the boost - and feeling very much alive. Then, a few moments and a textbook landing later, I found myself stomping through her carrier again, cursing under my breath. These damn corridors!
03 May 2024, 1:41pm
Impatience had gotten to me, so I’d come out to meet my guest somewhere partway through the corridors… almost bumping into her again as we both came to the same corner in a hallway. Me being less mobile than my counterpart, with a larger ‘hitbox’, meant said collision was only narrowly avoided.

I stood where I stopped, looking the woman over with my hands placed as fists on the hips, legs placed apart slightly. Fancy looking flight suit, and looked like sleep hadn’t been too good either. Nightmare, maybe… I’d definitely gone through one, thanks to impressions of the hivemind which sometimes slipped through the unconscious state to disrupt it.

“You look …”

I wasn’t exactly sure what to say, so I just… stood there, keeping that same position. The reminder of the original ‘bump’ and it nearly occurring again, but in a more compromising location on my upper body, was making this a little awkward too.
03 May 2024, 2:22pm
“Whew, that was a close shave,” I gasped, after pulling off a swift sidestep to dodge what would’ve been a nasty collision.

“Seems like running around in ships is way more perilous than zipping through space. I can for sure say I'm not getting cozy with it.”

I gave Kasumi the side-eye, who looked pretty intimidating from this angle… at least, if you planned to slip by her without making body contact. Somehow, she seemed a bit miffed, hands on hips. Or maybe, I was reading the room all wrong again. “Honestly,” I thought, “it’s no wonder we can’t chat up the aliens - we humans already have a talent for misunderstanding each other pretty damn well.”

I locked eyes with her and replied “Let me finish that sentence for you. I look… damn fine.”

I put on a cheeky grin and shook my shoulders in my elegant flight suit as if I were dancing on the spot.
03 May 2024, 3:11pm
I shook my head and dropped my hands to the sides of my hips.

“I do not want to talk about it. Being clumsy, and big, does not… match.”

I wasn’t interested in the flight suit either. It never appealed to me, laying too tight on the skin. Not for me, particularly not now, with my new and enhanced ‘frame’, nor on a person that I didn’t even consider a friend yet… if accepted.

So I turned around and began to move back to the data lab. Kind of, slowly. Certainly not as quickly as a human with more inferior proportions could have gotten there. I turned sideways and presented the displays with my right arm… and my side profile, if less intentionally. Even so, I was very aware.

“There. It is… mostly, everything. ‘Funny’ corporate stuff, the analysis of the AI chip, Azimuth data. The system, a site in it… the only thing it does not have is access keys or, whatever. But you have that covered. And we could still ask our ‘friend’. They have moved her into the cell block, already, I think.”
03 May 2024, 3:47pm
Quite some time ago, I went on a wild spree in a clothing store, decking myself out with snazzy gear that bore grand names like 'Renegade'. But somehow, this flight suit remained my favorite... quite comfy, and I fancied the vibrant colors. Well, it seemed my new ally didn't share the same taste, or maybe she was jealous of my dance moves. Either way, time to get down to business.

"If you give me some breathing room, I'll take a gander at what you've got there. Looks mighty intriguing." I squeezed past her, casting a glance at the display.

"By the way... caught the news today? Seems Hothis has been spouting off a wild speech about this system. I reckon you've ruffled someone's feathers if they're already soothing their stakeholders." I flashed a wide grin.

Then I got serious again. "So, about that prisoner... I've been pondering... maybe you should go in solo first, betting on her recognizing you. Who knows, it might just work."

I zeroed in on the display now before me.

"I'd say we know a tad more about the... Hub, let's call it that, the place where ships have been shuttling from the two outposts before Azimuth skedaddled from this system. For starters, the site is likely controlled by Azimuth themselves - those on your display are unmistakably their authorization codes." I pointed at highlighted entries from the displayed data.

"Also, the system's name seems to be a compound of two terms. It's not cracked yet, but one character in the name has been definitively identified as a 'space'. Not much, but it's something. And we already know it can't be that far away... Mhm.... If I had to guess, I would say - Xi Wangda. That is the place where the Musashi is staying, which is not proof, but it is an indication."

“It does have a space in it. So it was my guess, too.”, I replied, while stepping to the side slightly… sometimes still forgetting that I required, or took up more space, than I should have. A fact which I, kind of, quite liked.

The gesture itself was a little unnecessary since the only person that was liable to need to get past me had already done so, just about. Still, better to not be blocking the doorway with my big hips. … and I still gave it a lightly disapproving glance for not waiting for me to move aside. That much, I could still put my legs to work.

“But, the crates you found, they would have had a destination too? Where were they going to go? Because that could help.”

I then shrugged, looking at her rather than the displays.

“And Azimuth getting upset is… ‘fun’ for me, in, some way. I like to see them annoyed. As for, our… ‘friend’, down in the cells, maybe I could see her first. If only because then I am the only thing she can look at… remembering that she was beaten by someone with a fat… uh. You… know.”

I paused, thinking on something… less awkward.

“So, if you recognize authorization codes in the file, are they useful to us, or just numbers and things that show it is Azimuth stuff?”

"The crates I stumbled upon? They were destined for the Musashi. That's why I brought up this particular ship in first place. But I’ve got this nagging hunch that we’re dealing with an exception here, 'cause the outpost is being abandoned. Then again, maybe I’m wrong.”

I paused, letting the thought simmer. "Maybe that captive can spill the beans on whether she’s Musashi crew? It’d sure be a blast to hear what she knows."

"As for the codes… at first, I figured they were just some random patterns in the data. But check this out…", I whipped out the data orb from my pocket, the one I had taken from my carrier, "Part of the code from your data matches exactly what I found in that wrecked Type-10. I’m betting the first part, which only shows up in two flavors - Alpha site and Beta site, pinpoints the ship’s launch pad, and the rest is all about cargo and destination. We could cobble together a legit code from this intel, one that flags us as an Azimuth vessel, loaded with Guardian tech. But what good does it do us?"
03 May 2024, 7:57pm
"We should ask her, yes. And check where the... Musashi, is, anyway."

For some reason, getting the name of the ship out was difficult... even though my mixed English-Japanese accent would have led someone to believe I knew how to pronounce it properly.

"They have had a few months, to set themselves up there, in control of the system. And hide anything behind regular civilian operations, or weapons development. If not... we would spend a lot of time searching. Too much time for it to be worth it, or stop this 'Dawnbreaker' stupidity."

"But it would be pointless to disguise as an Azimuth ship, unless you want to sneak through the megaship and search its restricted areas. While I... wait. Because, I ..." And I looked down at my curvature. "... would really not do well, at sneaking. I may just be... too obvious, unless hidden in shadows, and if I had to avoid nobody. Because, even with a hologram, I am still... 'fat'. Even if it is not in a bad way. So maybe we should question our captive first."

I thought about things for a second, absent-mindedly looking into the air.

"But, if Azimuth know it is me, they would become a lot more careful, too. So if we talk to the captive, we can only release her after, so they don't run off with what we are after, and hide it for many more months. But it could also work for us... they cannot - legally - fire at me or try anything, without making Aegis very upset at them. And that would make the superpowers very upset at them, too. While I would like to see that... it is also not the kind of attention that is needed here."

Or so I believed, anyway.
