Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

The meeting was over and Kasumi was busy with other stuff, so I had nothing left to do on board the Abode. I decided to head to the hangar and catch a ride on the Dolphin that was waiting there with its pilot to take me back to my own carrier.

As I walked, I thought about the task ahead of us. We didn't know if we would run into any hostile forces while exploring the system, so it made sense to use a ship that wasn't just for scouting. Maybe Kasumi's Phantom would do the trick, since it had some firepower too.

I reached the hangar and spotted the sleek white Dolphin parked in a corner. The pilot waited next to it. He smiled when he saw me and waved.
12 Jun 2024, 12:48pm
"... she showed me a Black Flight... pendant, or necklace, without saying it was recovered from a dead pilot. So, I, felt... tempted, to reach for the pistol. And did, but, not without... taking it out. There was... still enough tension, in the air, to... cut through it, with a knife. But, no shots were fired. I am not sure, I fully trust her... yet, we at least, get along well enough, for a mission. And, have the same goal, of annoying Azimuth."

Jana looked amused.

"Pf. Yeah, great way for a first meeting to go.", she remarked. "I guess it's a good thing you two got along... kind of... in the end, though. This 'Hothis' woman sure sounds like one big handful of Azimuth's worst stuffed into one person, might only be trumped by Salvation himself. Wherever he is."

"If I knew."

"All of us would probably go looking if we did, or even just had the slightest clue." She glanced at the memory chip. "So, about this thing ..."

"Look at it. In your ship, or, somewhere... else. It will tell you, what you need."

Which, for now, was just where to go. I would give her some of the details of what it was I wanted her along for, as we went along. But I wasn't quite sure what to expect myself, yet... at hand of my missing memories.

"Why not here?", Jana questioned. "I could just hang around while you're off... doing your thing. I'd come along, but... get the feeling you're not into that idea and would rather do it as two."

I nodded. "Yes. It... could be, very dangerous. And... I would rather, not put you, at risk, with it. Two, ships... might be less noticeable, too. But we could be gone, for a few hours, so, you may... want to... do something, else."

Part of my hesitation was because of that stupid pathogen thing Azimuth worked on. I was... kind of, fine, exposing myself to the risk of it... but not somebody else. Or not a third person, anyway.

"Okay, sure. I'll just find something to do for that time, then. I am curious about your... 'partner', though, because you seem to have a thing for finding interesting company. And killing a Black Flight pilot is... well... that's definitely right in the definition of 'interesting', considering what I've heard of those guys."

I lounged comfortably in the Dolphin‘s luxurious passenger cabin, the soft hum of the carrier Abode fading into a distant memory. The cabin’s lavish amenities surrounded me, from the plush seating to the ambient lighting that even took into account the light of the constellations outside, the ship‘s advanced systems ensuring a ride devoid of turbulence.

As I gazed out at the passing stars, I felt a sense of belonging to something greater - a network of travelers, explorers, and adventurers, all seeking the thrill of discovery. I thought about the friends I had made along the way and those I had lost. Who knows, maybe a friendship would develop here too over time. After our last mission, I no longer thought this was completely out of the question, and I had to admit that working together was sometimes quite entertaining, at times even amusing and definitely successful.

Before I knew it, the familiar silhouette of my own carrier came into view, its massive bow, typical of the Victory class, concealing the light of nearby stars. The pilot’s voice broke the silence.

“Welcome to your destination,” he announced with a hint of satisfaction about a job well done. “I hope the journey was as pleasant for you as it was for me.”

I wasn't going to get out of the conversation that easily, so I decided to go with it.

"Interesting... I guess, yes. I do not know, where things will go, between us... but, the pilot thing. Apparently, they attacked a transport, or miner... with her on it, because they found some Thargoid thingy. I do not remember the details, too well, but they fought the ship off, and captured the pilot... then killed them, after questioning. Maybe it was a him, but ..." I shrugged. "Not important. So... that is why, the necklace, came into play."

"And where is your... 'associate', from?", Jana then asked.

"Somewhere... on the edge. Of the Bubble, even, past where Titans sit. In a place called 'Pirate's Lament'... but the system, still uses the old designator. Some... astro-whatever, catalogue, of old Earth days. I do not know why they still use it... maybe, nobody found better."

That was my best guess to that matter, anyway. Jana, meanwhile, was giving me a strange look.

"You, working with a pirate? Now there's something I wouldn't have expected.", she chose to remark.

"I... did not, have much choice. She claims, to be a 'good' pirate... whatever it, means. But I have made it clear, I am not favorable toward pirates."

As I left the Dolphin in the hangar of my carrier, my eyes fell on the ships lined up there. My gaze wandered over the sleek contours of a Krait Phantom - the type of ship Kasumi would probably choose - and the formidable presence of a Fer-de-Lance, until a black shadow caught my eye. There, swallowing the soft glow of the hangar lights, stood the ‘Relentless‘ - my Mamba.

This was a ship that didn’t just slice through the void; it danced with it. It was a testament to speed and aggression, a vessel that could outrun many other ships and turn the tide of any encounter with its blistering pace. I approached the Mamba, my hand brushing against the cool metal of its hull. I could almost feel the thrum of the engines, the silent promise of adrenaline-fueled escapades that lay ahead.

In my mind, I played out the scenarios. The Mamba would allow myself to strike swiftly, to hit hard and vanish before anyone could react. It was perfect for a mission that required a quick entrance and an even quicker exit. With a nod to myself, I sealed my fate with the ship that matched my spirit - to live boldly, to fly fearlessly, and to write my own legend- the ship that would carry me through the stars with the speed of a comet, knowing it would make a good addition to a Krait Phantom.

Then a thought came to me that made me laugh. The funny thing was that the curvy Kasumi would have the better curving ship with the Phantom - the Mamba is often seen as a ‘hit-and-run‘ fighter due to its speed, allowing it to engage and disengage quickly, while the Krait Phantom is viewed as more of a ‘hang-in-there‘ fighter with somewhat better turning performance.

This train of thought also brought the damned catchy tune back to my mind.... I hummed ‘Kasumi bump bump bump‘ and laughed out loud.

"I guess, at least, things between the two of you are pretty clear, and you still work together. It's something."

Jana's remark was certainly true. She also continued before I replied anything.

"I bet there's probably been stranger combinations... duos, out there, anyway. It's the stuff of stories and movies, but a thief and police officer working together to stop some shitty thing happening, well, it's probably happened at some point, somewhere. But a really curvy woman who stays on the legal side of things, mostly, and a pirate... it's up there, alright."

"It... might have. But I am not aware, if so.", I answered to the fictional bit, not knowing much else to say on this.

"Sure. So, anything else I need to know about what we're gonna do later?"

I shook my head. "Not... yet. But, we should, meet here again. On the carrier, before going."

"Okay. If you ever want or need help with this, feel free to ask, though. You know I've got a bone to pick with Azimuth as well."

Jana winked at me.

"I... will. If we need it. We, might."

"Just shout at me if you do. Figuratively. You've probably also got a bit of preparing left to do, so, leave you to it, yeah?"

"Ok. Bye."

"Bye! And come back in one piece. I'd hate for the world to lose your curves."

She was so awful. I waved at her as she walked out the door, and Jana waved back. Now I just needed to convince myself to abandon the comfy position of leaned against the table... which would probably have been weird to anyone else, but I was so big that I could pretty much stay in it as long as possible without feeling a thing down there.

Given that I didn't know what to expect too well, I'd probably pay that facility a visit in my Phantom. The question was... what was worth bringing along more on it. Fuel scoop, FSD booster or cargo rack... I decided to send a message out to my pirate helper before I left the data lab. Typing it while walking invited for me to bump into somebody on the way to the hangar.

I am going to prepare now. Done talking, with Jana. That's her name... in case, I forgot to mention. (I probably did)

What do you think I should bring on my ship? Are we going there with just the ships or using a carrier? It may depend on that, too.

-K

Off went the message, and so did I begin waltzing over to my ship. Hopefully, without embarrassing incidents on the way.
12 Jun 2024, 9:37pm
Just as I was about to strut out of the hangar towards the bridge, a message from Kasumi buzzed in. She'd wrapped up her meet and was itching to plot the next steps of our mission.

"I’d say we snag at least one of our carriers and hop to a system next door to our mark. Keeps us off the radar, yet primed with options for tweaking our ships' setups. If you reckon it's worth the hustle, we can roll out both carriers – gear up to the nines."

I mulled it over for a hot sec, then laid out my game plan.

"I'm thinking of piloting a Mamba in hunter mode for this gig. She's got the sensors to sniff out a ship and the muscle to yank one out of Supercruise. But then, I'm short of a decent planet scanner... What about you? Gonna take your Phantom for a spin?"
12 Jun 2024, 10:16pm
I decided to ´preserve my brain's energy for the upcoming mission as much as possible, and answered via another text message, stopping close to a doorway to write it.

Yes, I will be taking my Phantom. And, as matter of fact... it does come with a surface scanner. I figured, it would be good to have, in case I need to find something on a surface that normal scanners will not find, from orbit. But the main sensor array is also the best available, if lightweighted, rather than modified for maximum range. Can fight, generally prefer to avoid it.

Also has a vehicle hangar. But the Scorpion only has one seat now. A... modification, for me to get around in it.

As for carriers... they are not too subtle, and mine being there might not be seen as a coincidence, if those Black Flight pokers... as in, poking, not the card game, are monitoring surrounding systems. Yours... maybe, less so. If we take one at all, but I may bring some cargo space instead of fuel scoop if bringing the carrier.

I continued on my way after I had confirmation the message had well been sent. Wasn't that much further, though. Probably.
13 Jun 2024, 1:02pm
"I share your concerns that carriers aren't exactly inconspicuous, so using two is probably out of the question. But I reckon we can take the gamble on using one. The Tear of Raxxla isn't registered to any organization, making her as inconspicuous as an independent carrier can be in case someone starts snooping around. And she's got no history with Azimuth," I responded to Kasumi's message.

Then, I set about issuing some orders, preparing everything for the expected arrival of a guest - including a hangar spot and accommodations. Afterward, I sent another message to Kasumi.

"I reckon your Phantom is a solid choice. With both ships at our disposal, we're prepared for a slew of contingencies. You mentioned your Scorpio only has one seat, but that's fine by me. I'd rather keep my distance from the lab, especially with that pathogen lurking about. But maybe you're less concerned about it. Anyway - just wanted to say, you're more than welcome aboard my carrier. Give me a shout when you're ready."
13 Jun 2024, 2:04pm
I decided to just give those newest messages a look once I was in my Phantom, and had a look at the modules currently installed… turned out, thanks to my interfering with Azimuth locally, there was a cargo rack onboard already. Class 5, so it could carry a few containers. No changes needed - 20 light years of range would probably be enough to wherever we went locally, while the only thing available was the C rated FSD for supercruise overcharge. Publicly, anyway. Achilles were certainly working on the others already.

So, time to answer.

It seems, I already have the cargo rack installed. Because of my work against Azimuth… not that there was any… pirating, involved. Would not have wanted one of their containers full of a nasty virus, or something, anyway.

And maybe that team was also supposed to scrub the lab of the leaked stuff, but I guess if we are to run into them, it would be preferable to on the outside. And then we could, hopefully… poke around inside without worry of getting shot and having a hole in the suits.

Should I bring a normal FSD with a fuel scoop just in case, too, and keep them on your carrier? If we would need to go further.

Other, than that… just, make sure I am allowed to dock. But may not leave my ship, over on your end.

Other than a certain amount of social awkwardness which I possessed, in the face of strangers… especially, at least, I wanted to figure out which suit I would be taking, depending on whether we’d go out on foot or not. My personal preference would be to remain outside the lab, but if need be, I’d go in as well. And have everything thoroughly decontaminated in the airlock before going anywhere else, assuming that nasty Helix stuff still was in the lab’s air.

I was reasonably sure my modified biology and all that would kill it before it even had a chance to take root, but being careful never hurt anybody… and other people didn’t have what I did to protect them from viruses and pathogens. Not carrying it into other places would be preferable…

… whatever Azimuth even needed something so disgusting for. I hit the launch prompt, figuring I could as well think and discuss further details to the plan while I waited on the other carrier. In my ship.

But the idea of accessing an external comms link to try and find where the transmission to the “off-site server” went, began forming in my head already - this division of Azimuth did seem to be more organized than most of their others. Whether by choice or because they were led by what started to look more and more like a maniac second only to Salvation… to be determined.

I shelved the idea for immediate future reference as my ship’s pad reached the top deck and mag locks disengaged. First, getting over to the other carrier was more important. I assumed they’d know once I arrived, anyway, rather than needing to report it manually.
13 Jun 2024, 2:54pm
"I fancy the bit about the containers, and the assurance that it's anything but piracy. Spoken like a true pirate," I chuckled over the comms to Kasumi, responding to her latest message with a tone dripping in irony.

"As for the lab affair... if it must be done, I'd prefer a tussle between ships. This running around and gunplay on foot is not my cup of tea. If I had wanted to be a soldier, I might as well have stayed with the Empire... But what I'd really prefer is to slip in and out unnoticed. Engaging in an open confrontation with a commando squad that ruthlessly eliminates witnesses doesn't sound like a bright idea," I added, my voice carrying the weight of experience and a touch of disdain for ground skirmishes.

"You're clear to land on Pad 8... should be easy enough to remember," I quipped, alluding to the sinuous shape of the numeral, then continued, "Bring whatever you think you might need; a few extra pieces of gear won't make a difference, there is plenty of space on board the carrier. See you later."

With that, I ended my response and made my way toward the bridge.
13 Jun 2024, 4:18pm
I shook my head. Pad 8 just felt like an inappropriate joke referencing my figure. Wide on the upper and lower halves, thin in the middle... I'd remark on it later. First, I finished making my way over to the carrier, and sent the ship into the hangar bay, also getting the aforementioned FSD and fuel scoop transferred to here. Just in case... then, the message to reply to.

You are... just as awful, as Jana, at the teasing thing. Did it have to be 8?

And I... was trained in ground operations, I think. Before I lost those memories... but, then. that was also not with hips, wider than my shoulders, and thighs, that are as big as my waist on their own, in mind... nevermind the big heavy top half. I was just thinking, anyway... we should try to hack the facility transmitter from outside, and find that "off-site server" thingy where the Helix data was sent. I am sure it will be more interesting than stumbling through a lab, full of dead people, with some nasty stuff that turns you crazy floating in the air. Or... whatever it is they were doing with it over there.

Although I am sure you would love to see me walk around down there.
13 Jun 2024, 5:18pm
"Apologies if the landing pad isn't to your liking. Just take number 1. And your thoughts on the off-site server sound good... considering what was visible on the cam shots in the internal Azimuth report, we won't find anything of interest inside the lab anyway. The firefight and the explosion have destroyed quite a bit, and as you mentioned, there's no one left to question. So, even though you were trained and find more joy in ground operations than I do, the inside of the lab isn't worth the risk," I replied, my voice a mix of embarrassment and resolve.

I paused for a moment, deliberately ignoring the insinuation that I'd enjoy watching her strut around on the planet's surface. Banter was always good, a tried-and-true way to boost morale or deal with stressful situations, but I'd rather not see any of us down there - though I refrained from mentioning the pathogen again.

"Perhaps the station has some other data we can access through a hack. Although I suspect ABEL4 might have already cleaned house. But first we have to find the station - unfortunately we don't know its exact location."

And because curiosity has always been a stronger force in me than perhaps it should be, I couldn't help but ask a question about something that was none of my business.

"Speaking of Jana... do you two know each other from before - back when you was being trained in ground operations - and... uh... different than you are now?"
13 Jun 2024, 8:43pm
I have landed already. And I know why picked 8 for me, because you are naughty today. I should come bump into you, and watch the reaction of your crew if you land on the floor. But I would rather stay in the ship. So you will be spared… for now.

And I don’t know Jana from ‘before’, but only last year… and, apparently, not even in person, until after, ‘certain events’. I will not specify those. She did, first, see me… before I was big.

Also, I think, I rather prefer to avoid fighting on the ground now, because I am so big. But, if I need to… I can do it. From far away, rather, since I am… not so mobile, as I used to be. But it is not a way to live to be fighting, all the time, so I do not mind.

After sending that message on its way, I got out of the pilot’s seat and went to my ship’s onboard armory, to see what kind of gear I wanted to bring, just in case. If we were to be staying outside the buildings, I wouldn’t really have to worry about any germs getting inside, since the vacuum would only suck air out instead of letting anything in… and as long as the suit design worked as it was intended to, a single hole in it wouldn’t present any immediate risk of suffocation.

But the Artemis probably wasn’t exactly the ideal choice for any situation with the potential risk of taking a bullet, even if it was my preferred ‘go-to’ for how it looked on the outside.
14 Jun 2024, 2:05pm
I could think of cozier things than being steamrolled, and I decided it would be best to keep my trap shut at that moment. Besides, it was high time to focus on the mission ahead. I flicked open a comm link to Kasumi.

"Look, as for our little escapade that's looming over us, we oughta scope out the sitch and recon the target system before we go diving headfirst into a hot mess. Like I said before, the exact locale of the lab is still a big fat question mark.
Plus, there's a solid chance we'll bump into that ABEL unit in the system - no telling what kind of firepower they're packing. I reckon we're both savvy enough to steer clear of them if we can. Not just because we might get our butts kicked in a scrap, but because it'd set off every alarm bell at Azimuth.
Once you've battened down the hatches, we'll make the jump - to Col 285 Sector LU-M c8-6, a neighbor system that's 23.46 Ly shy of our actual target. From there, we can deploy both our ships. Unless, of course, you fancy doing a solo recon gig before with your Phantom."
