Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

[On board the Tear of Raxxla]
After a further thorough check of all carrier systems had given no cause for complaint - and even the initial unease of the engineering team had turned to enthusiasm - I decided to continue our mission. The subsequent system jump was uneventful, and our carrier soon entered orbit around a planet known to be rich in Guardian technology. Shortly thereafter, however, our scanners picked up the crash site of a ship of human origin, which turned out to be a Type-10. I then decided to send an away team to investigate the matter further.

[Communication with the away team]
[Away Team] "Command, we've landed. The wreck is in sight. Moving in with our SRVs to investigate."

[Carrier] "Copy that. Proceed with caution. What's the situation?"

[Away Team] "Ship's lying upside down, hull breached and twisted from the crash... several parts broke off and are scattered around. Looks like a catastrophic failure. We're near a hull breach... quite close to the holds. Going inside now."

[Carrier] "Copy that. Stay alert and report your findings."

Cautiously the team entered the badly damaged ship. Inside the cargo hold, amidst the chaos of scattered supplies, they found crates filled with Guardian technology - and something that looked like a smaller ship.

[Away Team] "Command, you're not going to believe this... The cargo hold, it's full of Guardian tech. There's also some kind of Guardian fighter in here! This could be a great find."

[Carrier] "Acknowledged. Retrieve what you can and secure any data that could shed light on the incident."

[Away Team] "Understood. Cargo is going to be secured by part of the team. Moving to the cockpit now to retrieve the on-board computer."

[Carrier] "Copy that. Handle with care. We'll need to analyze it back on board."

The cockpit was an inaccessible mangled mess, the crew's chairs hanging precariously from the ceiling as everything was upside down. When the team members tasked with securing data broke open a wall to get in, one chair gave way, and with it a pilot's body fell heavily to the floor.

[Away Team] "Command, we've found the crew. It's clear they didn't survive the crash. We're documenting the scene. The pilot's chair... just collapsed. The body... let's just say it's been here for a while - and doesn't look good... also the fall hasn't made things any better. We're seeing Azimuth badges on the uniform."

[Carrier] "Understood. Proceed with your mission objective."

[Away Team] "We've already located the on-board computer. It's intact but will require extraction. We're going to cut it out."

[Carrier] "Copy that. Make sure to preserve the integrity of the data core. It could hold critical information."

The sound of cutting tools reverberated through the hull as the team carefully removed the computer from its housing, preserving the data core that held the history and last moments of the Type-10 and its crew.

[Away Team] "Computer is secure. We're taking it back to a SRV."

[Carrier] "Excellent work, away team. Return it to the carrier immediately, and proceed securing the cargo."

[On board the Tear of Raxxla]
The discovery of the damaged ship turned out to be a real stroke of luck. Thanks to its cargo, we saved a lot of time and avoided a clash with Sentinels in the acquisition of Guardian technology, which we urgently needed to replenish our stocks. We also got an almost intact fighter for free.

All in all, our mission turned out to be a complete success with minimal effort, although the question remained as to why this single Type-10 was operating so far out when there were more easily accessible sources and, above all, closer to the bubble. Perhaps the recovered on-board computer would shed some light on this. I thought about the matter at hand and sent message to Kasumi.

"This is the Tear of Raxxla... hello Kasumi, looks like I'm wrapping up this wild ride ahead of schedule. Everything is in the green here, I just have one question: do you happen to have any information that could help decode an Azimuth on-board computer log? I'll now set course to Inara, and I'll be touching down by the 15th of April, maybe you could take a look then. Keep your thrusters hot out there and your spirits high, and see you soon. Haraldsen out."
22 Apr 2024, 12:58pm
The transmission reached me in an idle moment, pulling me out of being lazy and floating in the private room, with the carrier simply orbiting a world, no plans to jump. And I decided to reply to it via a text message.

Azimuth? Not sure… the old data I have might, but keys in there are probably very out of date. I do have a few decryption and recovery programs which could do it. Still learning how to use them again, and make them up to date, but they could work. Do you want me to send one?

I flicked the message away and continued to float around, occasionally letting my soft parts bump into something, particularly the rear half, usually into a wall.
22 Apr 2024, 1:30pm
Receiving the text message, I replied the very same way. Additionally, I attached the footage which was documented by the away team on site - however, I decided to pixelate some of the more gruesome looking things that were recorded in the cockpit of the crashed ship so as not to disturb anyone who might be watching it.

Thank you, please do send. We powered up the recovered on-board computer in an isolated lab environment... let's see what we can do with it. If that approach doesn't yield any result, we will have to resort to something different.
22 Apr 2024, 2:26pm
Here. Attached to the message. Do be careful to not let the program loose on anything else, it is… not likely to result in anything good for you. And maybe you can find some use out of the old Azimuth data I have, maybe some kind of similarity to current encryption methods which they might use.

And what would they be doing with that Guardian stuff? Because if they want to turn those torpedoes into something worse …

I left the message there, nothing more needing to be said, and sent it off. I doubted it would be much good, whatever this activity was for, given that it was once again Azimuth. Because it was always them.
22 Apr 2024, 7:57pm
"Hey Kasumi, hats off to you for the backup! Thanks to your awesome program and data, we cracked into the guts of the ship’s computer in no time. But it turned out to be almost laughably barren, like it hadn’t been flying long. But here’s the kicker: the Type-10 with the tag AZB4/S003307/SC-03 is legally registered under Azimuth Biotech, so there's confirmation of the ship's identity.

Based on this ID pattern, it looks like this bird was the third service craft of some mega ship we aren't familiar with. The Type-10’s been zipping to some rendezvous point outside the Bubble for the last four months, and every time, it was hauling Guardian tech from that planet, until its last lift-off when the engines failed - it smashed into some Sentinels, by the looks of it. That was the swan song for the ship and its crew. The destination coords are still locked in, but they’re wrapped up in another layer of encryption. Doesn’t seem like we’ll be cracking that nut anytime soon.

Also, dug up some information in the logs about a project code-named ‘Dawnbreaker’, and a handful of top-tier scientists’ names. Looks like they were ferried over on one of the first flights. Got our hands on bits of the comms protocol too, but it’s mostly fluff. However, there’s this oddball message about a bonus payout to the pilot for some special occasion. There’s also a media file which has been attached to this message, but it’s all mangled. We’re still piecing that puzzle together."
22 Apr 2024, 8:37pm
"So, you don't know what they were doing. But it is Azimuth... I doubt, good."

I paused for a few moments, thinking.

"We should find out what this is. Maybe when you are back in Inara? I will be doing some... things, against Azimuth, after I get back, so I may listen in on their comms for anything of value. I don't expect them to be so careless, but, you never know. And then share anything I might have found when we get to talk. Does that sound good to you?"
22 Apr 2024, 10:13pm
"Unfortunately, it remains unclear what Azimuth is up to. That project name on its own is about as informative as reading a Thargoids mind. But, when you consider the hustle - we’re talking the likely roll-out of a megaship, top-notch scientists jetted in special, and flights buzzing back and forth for months - it isn't rocket science to see this isn't exactly a small-time gig.

The Tear of Raxxla is already blazing a trail to Inara as we speak. And with a sprinkle of luck, maybe you’ll uncover some juicy tidbit in the meantime. Or my crew will wring further secrets from that ship’s computer - though that’s a long shot. Honestly, it’s a stroke of fortune that the blasted thing spit out anything at all after the crash. Just keep your sensors peeled, because you’ll be seeing this gal soon again. And you know what? I’m kinda buzzing about it, even if your joint doesn’t serve up one cup of coffee..."
22 Apr 2024, 10:55pm
"Ok. Sure. I will meet you there, then. As soon as I arrive, I will tell you."

I was still some distance away from the Bubble, but equally not in a rush to return either, to the war, its troubles, and other madness. So I'd simply keep things going at the pace with which they were until this point. And Azimuth especially were not going anywhere either, neither in the immediate nor slightly further future, looking at both their general, relative inaction, or that this 'project' had been going for a few months now.

Though it would be nice to return to somewhere with a little more civilization, even if I was not made for being around people, at all.

I closed my eyes relaxedly, like a lazy cat in the warm sunlight, and let a contented smile appear on my face. Without using my hands for support, keeping my back straight, I got up from the floor, in a single, smooth and even, coordinated move; maybe even gracefully, as much as this word is applicable to me anyways, and stood silently for a brief moment. Then, I opened my eyes and looked straight at Jana, and my smile turned into a smug and complacent, but in a positive way, smirk.

"Mmmmhmmm," I replied slowly, nodding and casually brushing a stray strand of hair off the front of my face. "You're all just jealous."

"Am I right?", arching my back a little and tilting my head in a playful manner, I kept my stare locked at Jana, for a couple more seconds, being still capable of suppressing the laughter which was already gathering its power within me.

"Pfffffft!", finally giving up, I sat on the floor again, in my casual way of sitting down on the floor, by almost dropping on it, while holding one hand in front of my mouth and the other on my stomach, trying not to laugh too hard after imagining what kind of a wacky weird improvised posing show I've just performed.

"Nah. Maybe not regarding me, but Kas... Definitely. Under any normal circumstances, I'd probably say you're obsessed, but we're all lightyears away from anything 'normal', you know."

Having such an insane amount of work to do as I have nowadays is certainly bad for roleplaying, lol.

"Obsessed?"

I scoffed lightly.

"Better with something weird like that than having a totally pointless and unnecessary grudge against an alien species just because they were there before us, I say."

"And, come on, you can't argue with the result. Even if it's not something you're into yourself... you do have to admit it's 'interesting', in more than one way."

I paused, appearing thoughtful.

"Besides, this world has long left any semblance of 'normal' behind. So maybe it's not that terrible we're just going with it, you know."

"Ow," I displayed a comically-exaggerated confusion, raising an eyebrow and placing both hands on my chest. "No, no, no grudge, not at all."

"I'm totally fine with Thargoids! I want them only to get off our lawn...", and I began counting with my fingers. "...stop abducting people, stop killing people, stop attacking our stations and cities, repair the damage done already, also..."

With all five fingers of my right hand shown, my left one joined the counting too.

"...Repay those who lost their jobs, those who lost their families and relatives, help with moving refugees back to their homes, stop attacking us at all and maybe... Only maybe...", my eyes narrowed and darted left and right a couple times, "...that's really a tall order, but I guess anything that's 'tall' is my thing now... Maybe bring me a big pizza."

I looked at Jana, then at my both hands in front of me, then at Jana again, and blinked my eyes quickly and rapidly several times.

"Oops. I'm out of fingers already."

"So...," proceeding, I switched back to my normal voice, with less mockery and irony, and placed my hands back on my thighs. "Yeah. I can't argue with the result. Regarding Kas, well, it seems like she wanted that for a long time and whatever weird stuff her body now consists of, did somehow listen to her. Me? I guess I'm just lucky. Or diehard."

"Ah, come on.", I began my reply, lightly amused. "You know which idiot I meant with that. And I mean actual idiot, not just stupid for the sake of having some fun."

I then paused, trying to think of what to say next.

"I would say she got lucky, too. You know, get something positive out of that shitty madness she got stuck up in because of Azimuth and the Thargoids. Can't say I envy her position. Sending Titans into a fireball has to be making them pretty mad and, you know, she's kinda clued in into all that."

I made a gesture around my head to accompany that statement, drawing a single circle.

Timeline: 04 March 3310, shortly after the destruction of the Taranis

"Pffffft", I facepalmed, "Yeah, being smart isn't my thing in general, you know."

"Anyway... Something tells me you're going to see each other much more frequently. You've got something... going on between you two. And I'm more like a random person you've met on your way and get to know a bit since there was nothing else to do. I hope you can, one day..."

Thinking of the most correct words, I paused for a little while, with my head resting on my hand, staring aimlessly and unfocused at an abstract point in the air.

"...Help her to soften a little. I can't do it... simply because I'm not neutral in what's happening around. She may even dismiss everything I'm saying right away thinking it's propaganda or whatever. Yet I see how difficult that mental struggle is for her."

Dr. Bowman was right. No matter how much faster and deeper my thinking is now, I can't magically create an answer to someone else's problems out of thin air, combining excerpts from books I haven't really read and shaking the variables left and right until they click in, I rely on the knowledge and experience I have. And I don't have enough of them.

"She holds a disdain for humankind and too much of her personality was built on it. Like a vine wrapped around a tree. She has her points, her beliefs, and, even if so negative, they have a solid logic beneath, logic she's used to operating with. She's right, in a way. Thing is... It's not the only possible way of thinking. Yet, day by day, with that stupid war... Her points are getting reinforced more and more. Drowning her in hopelessness and even hatred maybe. And I can't really do that much. I'm not impartial, I'm not neutral."
27 Apr 2024, 9:37pm
"I'll... try my best with her.", I cautiously replied. "But... I'm not sure I'm in any better of a position to really 'fix' her, being that I'm also fighting the Thargoids and all. Even if I have nothing personal against them, and am just tired of this violence. And maybe it is just her, you know. It'd be difficult to change tha, and I'm not sure I want to. Or how much, if it's really necessary to keep her around, I guess, here. Not in some deep corner of space nobody but the Thargoids would find her in, or worse, wherever they call home."

"Hell, I'm not even really convinced this mess will go anywhere but bigger guns getting brought in. Or maybe just more of them, because hell if I know how you'd top a Titan. As much as I want them to be gone, and be confident this is going to be it... I really just can't shut up that voice at the back of my mind nagging at me, telling me there's a very real possibility that it's just going to get worse."

I sighed, not really sure how to express myself about this further.

"Maybe... maybe this is just natural. To have those kinds of doubts, looking at how shitty the war is." I looked at her more directly, since I'd let my gaze wander outside. "You wouldn't know, would you?"

I breathed deeply.

"How is it that someone like me, who has all the reasons to think the Thargoids are shitty and to be mad at them, really isn't? They've sat on my home for... more than a year now, I might've lost whatever friends I got myself over the years after escaping that Federal shithole, because of them, and yet... it's like my brain is incapable of it. Or maybe it's not fucked up enough yet. I just don't know."

I dropped my arms to either side of the seat and leaned further back into it, showing my frustration more visually too.

"Uhhh... Yeah." I nodded reluctantly in response. "I always keep in mind that this shit can get worse any minute. That's a... fragile balance, you know. How to get the maximum of... this," and I slowly waved my hand, pointing vaguely towards the landing area, "...but without risking losing too many ships and people if the shit gets too rough too suddenly."

"Apparently, I'm not that bad at it," making a somewhat tired smile, I shrugged, "so I've been promoted to this post several months ago and everyone's glad to see me here."

"Yet, regarding Kas... I'm not saying that she should be somehow 'fixed', I think. She's fine. She'll get to her own answers eventually, and, no matter what answers it may be, I'll respect her decision. I only want her to suffer less."

"She may not like... us, yet, under those circumstances, she's leaning towards them, because it looks like the only option. Don't get me wrong, I don't believe that absolutely all of them are that shitty, but I haven't seen any not-shitty specimens yet."
