Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Phahah," making an ironic laughter and waving my hand, I replied. "The ability of being an arsehole is a... Benefit of being intelligent, to say. Capable of thinking, of evaluation, of building logical chains longer than a single-level cause-and-effect. Being an arsehole is a product of an intellectual effort, since, to be one, you should know what it is, to be an arsehole in your society, in your country, or, in that case, in your species. In your population group, in general. What's considered being an arsehole, what's enough to put that label onto a specific individual. And, what can you theoretically achieve by being an arsehole, to justify being one."

"So, if there are any other intellectual species around...", I narrowed my eyes, darting them left and right, "...what is much expected, but maybe in other galaxies... Then, presumably, they have arseholes of their own. Though, the criteria may be so different from ours that we may probably even like those folks."

"Look," grinning goofily, I pointed my finger up into the air. "Me smart!"

"And, those stupid human standards... The same cave man kill all different bigotry, but, kind of, other side of it. Where are the 'different', should be the 'conforming' too, to see them as proud and sound elements of that society. Fucked up society, to be correct."

“Oh, great, so we can expect more idiot Thargoids to show up and try to mess things up if we ever find a group of them that doesn’t hold up pitchforks every time one of us wants to be friendly with them.”

The statement in itself was a little sarcastic, yet deep inside, I knew it had a certain truth to it. If there were different Thargoid ‘factions’ or ‘hives’ as people called them, not all of them were liable to agree with leaving humans alone.

“But I guess that might just end up being a concern for whoever follows after us. I’m not really expecting to see any meaningful interaction beyond not interacting or throwing the Titans back out of the Bubble… assuming they all leave before getting turned into a bunch of rubble. And exploring another galaxy? Don’t expect I’d even be remembered by anyone at that point.”

I shrugged, showing indifference.

“Doesn’t bother me, anyway. I’m just a someone who’d like to live their life and be happy about it. And that’s one reason I picked somewhere to stay at the edge of the Bubble. Maybe also got that pilot’s license… so I could stay away from all of the political nonsense from the superpowers, the messed up ‘culture’ of Feds and Empire… which I’d even struggle to qualify as a culture and more just hellholes. Especially with all of that corporate bullshit the people in the Federation have to put up with. Can’t make a living? To the streets with you, be never seen again!”

Highly mocking, of course. There was no other way to be about it.

“An additional bonus of being totally independent? You don’t need to live in fear of idiots sending a kill squad to shoot up a bunch of civilians that never did anyone wrong and are just trying to make themselves a living every day. And you know that happens more often than it should.”

“Whichever moron let things degenerate to this point …”, I quietly muttered as well.
18 Mar 2024, 5:56pm
"Yeah, imagine retarded Thargoids, phah," I giggled, covering my mouth with a hand. "Aimlessly floating and bumping into stuff, and annoying other Thargoids by scanning and zapping them or whatever."

"And, Feds, Imps, Allies... Pff," waving my hand dismissively, I shrugged and looked at Jana with a slightly-disgusted kind of face. "It's like trying to find a difference between shit, shit and shit. I mean, there are some good people, yet... Tiiiiny," squeezing my left eye shut tightly and narrowing the right, I held a hand in front of my face, with a little distance between the index finger and the thumb. "...Tiny-tiny fraction. Mostly, arseholes. Independent groups are full of arseholes too, But, nah, I don't 'hate the entire humankind' like... Some people do... Maybe we both know one..."

"I'm just... Well, you know, indifferent. I can't choose the universe, the humankind to live in. And, moreover, I am a part of it too. And some people do think I'm an arsehole."

"Although I wish they would say it to my face...", sounded a little later as a quiet comment.
18 Mar 2024, 6:05pm
“Well, in my book, you’re the good kind of… idiot, I guess. As long as I don’t accidentally get hit in the face by one of your hands, I don’t mind being around.”

I finished off the can of water, leaving it standing where I took it from, and switched to a different subject.

“So, do you guys around here,” I gestured at the surroundings. “Like, also rescue people from the Titan when it goes down, or is it just attacking it? I was thinking about going over to the next one to help with that evacuation effort when it is about to go. With it seeming like the local Thargoids suddenly become a lot more busy with not being near an exploding Titan than to attack any nearby humans, it shouldn’t be too dangerous either.”
18 Mar 2024, 6:16pm
"Phahah, yeah... I may look like a clumsy oaf, but I'm not."

"Most of the time", I added a little later quietly. "Being lazy and clumsy is what I really like to do, phah."

"And, speaking of this place... We're mostly a combat group," I nodded towards the landing pads. "We have some general purpose transport ships but they're poorly fit for a Titan rescue kind of stuff. That's why we needed some help from Aegis back then in December."

"This place is... A training camp and an operations centre for patrolling. Kind of, more of open combat. But other groups do have specialised rescue ships and they do rescue people from Titans. And you're certainly going to see me there too. No way I'm missing that show."
18 Mar 2024, 6:35pm
“Yeah, I’m only going there when the fighting’s done, thanks. Not going to be trying to rescue people when there’s dozens of Thargoids swarming the Titan and it fires off that defensive pulse every few minutes. It’d be a nightmare to try rescuing the captives like that. And I don’t expect you’d hang around while the whole thing’s already blowing up. Unless you want to stop as many Thargoids as can be from getting out and going to one of the other Titans, I guess.”

I shrugged. Wasn’t really my business to make those guesses, nor was I any kind of battle planner. Generally as well as here.

“But anyway. You haven’t really said if you mind me naming that Fer-de-Lance in your image… or whatever the correct expression is for this. Just saying ‘It’s your ship’ wasn’t really a good answer.”

I did want to know before leaving, so I could be sure. And it felt like the conversation was kind of reaching its natural end point where neither of us had much of anything left to say.

I also didn’t want to let the ship go without a name, but if that idea got a ‘No’, then it’d just need to do without one.
19 Mar 2024, 5:45am
"Hm... Then," I spread my arms, making a half-grin, "then you may not see me there, phah. My instructions are to take all my pilots and leave shortly after the meltdown stage is confirmed. They are just super tired by that time. Rescue groups tend to send fresh forces until it's really about to go kablooey though, but strike teams should stay there that long only in case of unusually high resistance. Being a hero is nice and stuff, but we have seven more of these."

"However... If you really want...", I rubbed my chin, thinking, and my gaze wandered from side to side, "...I may go alone in the very last phase, after pulling all my pilots out. I can't see anything that could make my superiors stop me. Just, you know, to hang around. If you want."

"And, regarding the ship. Consider that a 'yes'. I'm trying to be... phah... all that nice and considerate here, not forcing your hand and all that. So, I don't mind."
19 Mar 2024, 6:04am
“Ah, I think it’ll be fine.”

That statement was accompanied by a throwaway hand gesture.

“I’ve been told if you don’t bother the Thargoids as they’re leaving, you won’t get a swarm of a dozen with four Glaives in it annihilating your ship. At least, you know, once they’re aware their fancy ride is about to meet a sudden wall in front of it. Sudden, in relative terms, that is. So I shouldn’t really need an escort… but I won’t argue if you’re looking to see the fireworks. Or just one big firework, I guess. Or, if it is for emotional support while I spend too much time near a big Thargoid ship that’s literally tearing itself apart. Because there’s probably better places to be in the world.”

I shrugged. I’d probably survive that, from a mental standpoint. Or maybe I’d been through too much insanity already. Was hard to tell from my perspective.

“And I’ll definitely take that as a yes for the ship. I won’t say anything about the name unless people ask, though. And I hope they’re not going to see me as one of those idiots who show up just to kill others because they’ve actually lost all of their straight-thinking braincells and the half-sane ones. I at least still have the ones with a little bit of sanity left. Unfortunately, the ones with ‘idiot’ written all over them might have taken over, though.”

A little joking about oneself wouldn’t hurt, I felt like. The tone hopefully giving away that it was, or at least that it wasn’t ‘idiot’ in the bad way.
19 Mar 2024, 2:24pm
"Aaah, no worries, every place in the world deserves that label. I mean, 'there are better places to be in the world'. Haven't found the ideal one yet..."

"...And something tells me they simply don't exist," sounded more quiet as a sarcastic comment. "Shitty places, though... There are a lot of them."

"And I'm already starting to wonder what you may answer if somebody asks 'who the heck is Muir', phah. But, I presume, it's better to keep it a surprise."
19 Mar 2024, 2:38pm
“What might I answer …”

My look trailed off, thinking.

“I could say ‘an inspiration’. Or ‘a friend’. Or that it is just a name without much more meaning. Most people probably wouldn’t care enough to look for anything, anyway. So I guess it’s just for me. And maybe you.”

I shrugged. What other random people thought wasn’t really a concern for me here.

“A weird thought I just had, how do you think Kasumi is handling the ‘flight experience’? Because there sure is a lot of, uh, soft mass to be compressed on her body now.”
19 Mar 2024, 6:22pm
"Aaaaawwww," pressing my hands together, I kept them close to my chest, looking at Jana and blinking quickly. "An inspiration. Me! An inspiration! Aaaaw!"

"No, seriously," switching back to my normal voice and stopping my attempts to look somehow cute, if that's even possible for me, like, literally talking seriously now, I continued. "If I've been able to inspire someone, that's great. That's really great. Maybe that's what many of us people even live for. We do things, we inspire people, people do things too."

"And, talking about Kas and piloting... Imagine something vertical with a high positive G," holding my both hands flattened in front of me, I slowly moved them apart as a wild grin grew on my face. "...Squishy-squishy!"

"Dammit, really, that's goofy, surreal and funny at the same time. Like, all that stuff down below already barely fits in a chair, or a pilot seat, now imagine pulling up, like, really pulling that stick with everything you've got. On something that... Yeah," I tapped the floor with my hand a couple of times, "on something that can turn real fast."
19 Mar 2024, 9:14pm
“Better hope she got herself an adjusted seat which is built with those… how can I put this, ‘tolerances’ in mind.”

I had to restrain myself to not start giggling uncontrollably at the sheer stupidity of what I was saying. Which the look on my face and tone reflected.

“And that’s not even talking about how all of that… ‘up top’ might react during those same maneuvers. And a planet with high gravity too, I guess. Probably better if it’s gotten reinforced too, to account for those… pf… forces.”

I stopped talking for little to let my brain get back to ‘serious’ mode… and avoid breaking out into laughter, maybe.

“But, yeah, I guess I got it into my mind that I should try to do something with that ship… model, I guess, after that mess around the Titan to get her out of it. Though the last thing I would have expected there is for her to basically turn out like she’s straight out of a you-know-what magazine.”
19 Mar 2024, 11:33pm
"Oh hell I'm sure she does, phah," I grinned and pointed at my own pilot seat. "She has to. Like, look at that shit. It's damn indestructible. Last time I stepped on the scales... You may guess, phah."

At that point, I had to interrupt my speech to make some mildly insane giggles.

"Yeah. But those made for cargo showed two-eighty-something. Multiply that by the friggin g-forces I have to deal with... This throne has to deal with."

"But, on a serious note. I've no idea how little was the chance for two people," I started counting with my fingers, "...who know each other, who played the same VR gimmick together, who survived near-death situations, to get those... Improvements. After the said near-death situations. And those improvements are nothing less but their own 'ideal body' images."

Pausing for a second, I let that statement hang in the air for a little while.

"This fate stuff certainly has... A weird sense of humour, that's for sure."

"At least it didn't mess up the recipient addresses of these gifts...", sounded quietly and, of course, ironically.
20 Mar 2024, 12:23am
“I don’t suppose you’d know how heavy she is? Did she tell you? Can’t remember if she did to me, or if I even asked her, but feel like it was a bit of an embarrassing subject. You know, at hand of her not being very proportionate and all that.”

I threw a more direct look at Ina, as if to say ‘Not like your body’.

“Can’t say I know much about that fate stuff or if I believe in it. But I might’ve found it amusing if all this landed at the wrong recipient. Imagine some random woman finding herself like that all of a sudden, or, I guess, after however long it took for that shape to ‘form’. Hell, you’ve got me playing with the thought of how it would look if her and Seo’s places were reversed right now. I’d say that’d be pretty funny.”

I paused for a second.

“I assume they know each other, anyway. My memory is a bit screwy after all that nonsense I went through, so I can’t quite recall either if I asked or she said anything about it. I think they’d get along though.”

“And let me guess, you stepped on a scale and the thing just fried its circuits or broke in some other way? A normal one, that is, not industrial-… grade. I think that’s the word?”
20 Mar 2024, 3:21pm
"Yep. It just cracked. Crack! Like that. Step. Crack," I replied in a staccato-like manner at first, then getting to the more common voice. "But, what's most heinous, these were doc's scales. I mean, our doc, who ran me through the eval stuff after Aegis discharged me."

"And... Maybe I'm wrong, but...," I narrowed my eyes, speaking slowly, recollecting recent events. "...Something made me think, like... When I spoke to Kas... It seems like she doesn't want to tell. Maybe still not used to triple digits, phah. I've been on this side for too long to bother."

"And no no no no no, just no, what happened to her may be funny and amusing and even... Well... Attractive to some people, but I can't imagine... You know. Myself in that position. Especially now, phah. That'd be really too much."
