Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Hmph," a smirk decorated my face for a few moments. "Documents say that I'm... 'Technically immortal'. The brain is sustained by a thing that keeps it in balance and introduces copies of my own cells, that thing sustains itself by having six copies of its own parts, body vital stuff is tripled and I have the schematics to produce everything except for the head thing on my own, to cover the repair and maintenance needs, so... I'll see, phah."

"I'd really like to see a better future for humankind. More peaceful one. Humankind is full of arseholes but maybe a few more centuries, millennia of progress and the environment could change. Into something that encourages not being an arsehole."

I looked around, observing Kasumi's room.

"We're certainly on a better level now than we've been, like... A thousand years ago. Not to mention two. Or more. Things are getting better, but, sadly, this is a very slow process."

"And don't worry about the people in the camp. Essentially the same human beings you can encounter anywhere else. A mixed society of folks originating from many places of the inhabited space. Consider it visiting a random town. It is, essentially, a town now, even if built of prefab blocks. They aren't nomads but they also aren't planning to stay there forever."

"They all lived in a town once...", I blinked slowly, diving into my memories. "But the system is overrun by Thargoids now. My dear person, Mion, you might've heard about her, is from that community herself. A military officer too, a pilot, and her rank in their resistance forces is equivalent to mine. So... I was assigned to the AXDF garrison next to the town shortly before the war escalated, was a wing leader those days. We stood our ground even when they surrounded us and took out all our surveillance equipment across like thirty light years wide sector, but, you may guess. Our senior officer got killed in a major battle right over the settlement, I took his place and arranged the evacuation. Lost my entire wing and a wing of volunteers keeping the main forces away from the transports, and almost died myself."

"Made a crash landing fifty kilometres from the town... And, sometimes our galaxy is a small place, was recovered by the rescue team led by the same woman whose public speech had moved me to joining the AXDF in the first place."

Smirking ironically, I spread my arms and shrugged.

"This life thing is full of stories. Many of which could get you dead, phah."

“I… don’t think I have heard, no. I guess… if you wanted, you could introduce me. But I am not sure.”

It would be a total stranger, for one, but also… I didn’t really feel like meeting new people at the moment. Or at this point. Or I just rationalized my hesitation in that way, when I wasn’t too sure where it originated from. Maybe it was because I couldn’t even remember my own friends. Perhaps a better time to consider that would be when I visited that town, if I did.

“Maybe we have it in common. That we refuse to die. I should have, twice, yet …” I lifted my arms to the side, in a shrugging way. “Here I am.”
03 Mar 2024, 12:46am
"Same here, yeah," I chuckled in a defiant manner, "This stupid world has to try harder if it wants to get rid of us".

"And no worries, unless anything urgent and extraordinary happens, I won't force you to meet any new people. You need to care about yourself, in the first place, and recover from the shit happened to you," have to admit, sometimes I think of recording that type of my voice to figure out how 'soft and considerate' it sounds, because I'm genuinely concerned.

"Maybe we could take the original town back one day and get to rebuilding it. That'd be awesome. Such an irony, it has been the first place where I felt, like, at home... Or, maybe, as close to it as possible. And then we had to evacuate, in like a month."
03 Mar 2024, 12:51am
“If I could, I would like to help with… taking it back. If the Thargoids will go peacefully. If they don’t …”

I didn’t really need to finish that sentence. We both kind of knew what the outcome would then be. And I posed a question that came a little out of nowhere for her, perhaps.

“Do you think I should look into the Guardian ruins, for Nemesis? I mentioned it earlier, that Seo wants me to, to understand why she doesn’t want to talk about… whatever she knows.”

It would have ashamed me to admit that she had told me but I’d kind of forgotten a bunch of the details already, mostly just remembering that it was bad. At least I had an excuse for why I’d have to tell people that I had no clue.

"And, if we have to fight, you'd be most welcome as a transport pilot after it ends."

"I can't imagine what kind of a pile," and I made a wide, encompassing gesture with both hands, "of construction materials the folks are going to need. There was some damage and destruction already when we left, and I guess it's a field of rubble now."

"And, regarding what Seo said...", narrowing my eyes, I paused for a second, trying to run possible theoretical scenarios only to figure out I know nothing special about the 'Nemesis' and have only a common amount of knowledge of Guardian ruins, "...I'd trust her if I were you. She knows what she's talking about, she cares about you and she's unlikely to send you on a one-way trip."

"If there's something you should see with your own eyes, rather on a video or hear a story about, then it might give you more than just a set of restored memories. Maybe, a direction to go further. Maybe, a knowledge that may change your life. Just... Don't forget to take a few photos for me, okay?" I smiled playfully, even knowing it might be inappropriate when that topic is involved, but, uh, everything to make the vibes less heavy.
03 Mar 2024, 1:28am
“Transport… I don’t know if I am very good at that. I tried a few things in a ship simulator in VR, and I quickly get very bored if I have to move cargo. There is nothing interesting about it.”

I stretched my lower back a little, having been leaned forward for a bit too long.

“And I could take pictures of me at the ruins. But I don’t take pictures of myself, being a tourist, or anything like that much. Maybe if there is something pretty to be seen. But I don’t think I would go to those old sites for anything very personal. It is just… about that stupid idiot. Why couldn’t he stay dead?”

I shook my head, after sounding a little mad at it. Certainly had all the reasons to be. Or too many good ones. And having this body was something I’d thank neither him nor the Thargoids for.

“I will still try to be careful, there. And not set anything off. Like one of those relics, if they contain nanites that disrupt Thargoid technology… and I am full of it.”

I also was not a Titan, so it’d be pretty difficult for me to recover from such a thing.

"Aaaah that fuckin bloody old nutjob," I rolled my eyes, facepalmed and shook my head simultaneously. "All that friggin war is his fault."

"See, I was on the carrier, in the Pleiades. Then, sent to that settlement, it's on the border near the Pleiades too. All we did was responding to distress calls, escorting miners, transports, explorers, passenger ships, all that. Random border clashes." I pointed my finger several times at random points in the air saying that. "And we did so being totally aware that, while we keep the stuff at that level, the scientists are working on something to prevent the war. Not to escalate it. We didn't want them all dead, we wanted them to stop harassing civilians."

"Friggin idiot," I literally spat these words out. "I can't imagine how unhinged he may become in like a hundred years, if... How old he is, actually... 160? 180? Have made him such a crackpot. He belongs to a padded cell in a supermax nursing home."

"Anyway... Yeah, be careful out there. I've no idea what you're talking about, except it being a long-abandoned something, but it already doesn't sound like a smooth tourist trip."
03 Mar 2024, 2:50am
“I would not do anything dangerous. But I need to visit those Guardian ruins for… data logs, I think it is. Maybe what happened to them, to where they are gone now. I know I could just search, but …” I left a small, but important pause between the halves of that sentence. “… it is better to do it myself, I think. Though, being near Guardian things… even just thinking, it makes me uncomfortable. Because of the Thargoid parts. They don’t like to be near those items.”

I took a deep breath.

“But it… should be safe. As long as there are only those old defense drones. A… ‘Scorpion’, should be able to kill them easily.”
03 Mar 2024, 3:49am
"You'll be fine, I'm sure," I sounded as reassuring as possible, "If you need to be there personally, then there's nothing that keeps you from doing so. And I doubt you could just, you know... Find that stuff in open access."

"Though, yeah, phah, you're way, way better than me with that computer and security stuff. But, you can't download something that isn't connected to any networks. Those... Facilities, ruins, places, may actually keep more secrets than we both think."

Imagining the next idea, even a chance of that happening, brought a wacky grin on my face.

"Just... Pffffft! Imagine discovering that old prick in whatever digital realm he retreated to, and making fun of him there. Uploading a virus that puts an irremovable tin foil hat onto his head and none less irremovable heated glowing metal stick up his... Data port."
03 Mar 2024, 4:12am
“I… can’t say I currently remember much about this whole… hacking thing. Maybe it will come back to me if I need it. But for now… I have my tools. And hope they work.”

I sighed.

“I don’t think… it would be very useful for Guardian machines. They might work on very different… things, and I believe Seo when she says I should not try to learn the way their encryptions and networks work, because it would take too much time. And that one engineer… what’s his name… already has something that can go into the network to fetch data. With the right items provided. So… why not use that? I would visit there, before going to the ruins. Or at least ask for that… program. Whatever it is.”

A brief pause, to catch my breath after all that.

“I don’t think I would find him in there. But if I could, I would very much like to upload a virus to him. Something that very slowly eats away at the code, until there is nothing left.”
03 Mar 2024, 5:12am
"Hm. No surprise. Hacking and cybersecurity are, kind of, quite brain-intensive activities. And you're recovering from a memory loss. Soooo... You are not to blame for forgetting."

"Though," I pointed a finger upwards, "it was one of your best skills. Maybe, remembering it won't be so difficult."

"But the Guardians... Yup. Their stuff operates on an entirely different level. We, humans, can't even imagine creating a computer, let alone an entire complex, capable of surviving that long."

"So I agree with Seo," and I nodded slowly, indicating that, "Trying to understand their machines will certainly take too much time, and why should you do that absolutely alone if there are already some tools and software to make it at least a bit easier."

"...and don't forget to pack some yummies, that stuff is going to take long, phah."
03 Mar 2024, 12:02pm
“I will go there with the carrier, so I will not have to worry. Both to not need to fly myself and to carry the cargo that I need. I have looked at what I will need for it, already.”

Some of those mature brain impulses suddenly began to manifest again, and I looked around, as if to see my reflection in… something. Because, for some strange reason, now was the time my brain decided it wanted to be reminded of just how big my breast was compared to the upper body, and stood off from it. But in the absence of any reflective enough surfaces… my hands moved up to their underside and began to happily cup and lift them very slightly, while looking down at how filled my view was with this big round shape on my chest.

“It really is just so… nice.”

It was like I’d gotten addicted, but in the best way possible. I wouldn’t be able to live without this body again.
03 Mar 2024, 2:44pm
"This looks almost like an expedition to me....", I started replying, yet, made a pause witnessing Kasumi's... New kind of behaviour. Whatever that thing in her body did with her appearance, it certainly took its inspiration from the depths of her mind and responded to some of those certain, personal, signals.

"...can't say I didn't do the same thing in the shower once they discharged me, phah."

"Pffft!", chuckling and waving my hand lightheartedly, I shook my head and took a pause to muster enough mind focus to continue, "...Yeah, like an expedition. Not a trip for a day or two... Maybe it could also let you know more about what happened to you in the past. Not always a good thing to remember but sometimes you need it to know what to do next."
03 Mar 2024, 3:58pm
It was… more difficult to get ahold of myself this time, that fondling of my bags of fun having transitioned into running my hands along them, sending other, less appropriate sensations through my body. Which I would likely have to deal with at… some point following this. I squeezed inward at the bottom a few more times, lightly, before I could get a grip on it.

“I… I maybe have done it a few times, in the shower too. It is just… so hard to control. Once it gets started. I feel too good in it to not… ‘play’.”

Was I really talking about this to someone else that wasn’t extremely close? I shook my head, and took a few breaths to steady out my mind, trying to take it away from those tingly sensations really demanding my attention. And that of my fingers.

“It will not… be too long, that I am gone. Maybe a few days to cover the different, old ruins. But I want things to be simpler… and, maybe, having the carrier nearby will make it safer for me, too, in case there is trouble. I don’t think this… has much to do with my past, however.”
03 Mar 2024, 4:31pm
"I'd say, being intimate with the person who knows you the best. Yourself, pfffft," I went into a hardly controllable giggling mode, still trying to press a hand against my mouth, but seemingly it just had to happen. "...aaaaah, craps. Why do so many good things in your life happen only after you almost die?"

"Oh. Ow. Okay, okay, that was too philosophical, phah."

"Whatever, you're going to find out there...", some pictures of old ruins like INRA bases and Guardian facilities flashed behind my eyes yet I'm neither historian nor archaeologist, I couldn't remember anything in particular, being there only for basic relic material gathering. "...Could much likely be of some use. Maybe we don't know what exactly kind of use, at the moment. But, I'd trust Seo if I were you. She should know that kind of stuff quite well."

"Just, uh. Just don't do anything that could rile them up, you know."
