Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

“Who said… I was only naughty, today?”

Though, that was enough silliness for the moment. I got back to monitoring the comms, and as we were leaving the settlement, then planet, behind us… something else popped up. Encrypted, but that was taken care of quite quickly.

“Hm. Your systems, they caught a thing, about a… ‘compromised Helix’. And it has ‘AZB’ with it too… Azimuth, probably. But the transmission does not seem new. What do you think, it is?”
01 Jun 2024, 10:11pm
"No idea what else you get up to…“ I retorted with a smirk, my voice dripping with mischief as I nudged the ship's course just a hair to the right. The thrusters roared to life, propelling us to jump speed with a satisfying surge.

"AZB sure sounds like Azimuth Biotech to me. But 'Helix'? That doesn't ring any bells. The repetition smells like an automated message - maybe from a beacon… What's tickling my brain is that this message doesn't have any location details. Doesn't seem like a distress call. What's your take?"

By now, we'd closed in on our target, and I smoothly initiated the braking sequence. It wouldn't be long before we'd cozy up close enough to Musashi that their flight control would be hailing us.
01 Jun 2024, 10:18pm
“Could, not be a distress call. I don’t think, anyway.”, I replied. “Whatever it is… I have never heard. May just be another of their secret things… that has gone wrong. Or there would not be a message about how it is ‘compromised’.”

I looked at navigation. Getting close… then there was a megaship as the transport ship dropped out of supercruise.

“But, maybe it is to be figured out later. Do this first, and then …”

I couldn’t deny feeling kind of nervous, about this one. I was nice and cozied up by the small outpost, which helped, but here… I was stuck right in it, whether I liked it or not. Though, as long as I didn’t need to try squeezing into any ordinary uniforms to try selling a disguise, it wasn’t as bad as it could be.

Still, said nervousness made me check if that data pad had any location transponders. Just in case - it squawking to some Azimuth system on the other end, from a distinctly non-Azimuth ship, wouldn’t be particularly practical to trying to sneak around one of their megaships.

“Quite the buzz around here. Looks like it’s mostly freighters, from what I can tell. Got a couple of Type-9s, a Type-7, and a swarm of smaller vessels zipping by.”

I took a moment to eye the bustling traffic.

"Seems like it's mostly traffic from within the system. The good thing is, we can blend in with the crowd. Got a little scheme brewing in my mind..."

I crunched the numbers for distances, speeds, and approach angles of the nearest ships, then tweaked our own ship's course, dialing back the speed just a notch.

“This way, we should have a nice little queue ahead of us, inching our way closer to the Musashi. With a bit of luck, no one will notice we’re not exactly in a rush to dock in their bay… more like we’re eyeing their comms systems with a bit more interest.”

Next, I flipped a switch on the control panel before me, which killed our shield.

“They haven’t clocked us yet, and a ship approaching without shields is far less conspicuous than one that suddenly goes dark near the mega ship. And before you get jittery - this ain’t my first rodeo. I’ve skirted around a few mega ships just like this. We need to cozy up close to their communication array so you can work your hacking magic, but if we pull this off, we stand a solid chance of pulling this stunt without setting off any alarm.”
03 Jun 2024, 11:47am
“I just hope you know, what you are doing.”

My tone reflecting that I wasn’t exactly thrilled about it in any way. I also put the datapad away again, after that reply. Doing a fast approach to a station without shields was one thing, sitting practically stationary without them right next to one… was an entirely different matter. The only ‘good thing’ about the situation, if there even was one, would be that Azimuth was unlikely to just begin blasting, and instead perform checks on each and every ship present.

Not that it really made for much of a reassurance, considering they didn’t skimp on security flights. Could have sworn I’d seen blips of some ships just sitting stationary, a certain distance away, too. Definitely beyond visual distance for any ordinary human… but not the right type of scanning equipment. And, maybe, my own not-quite biological eyes, but I wasn’t bothered to test that. And it wasn’t likely I’d be able to spot any particular details from that.

Those… ‘ghost ships’ seemed to be doing something similar to this, only a lot further away. Observing, only emitting the faintest signature every once in a while, faint enough to be written off as background ‘noise’ from cosmic radiation, the nearby star, and such… to an ordinary sensor, and someone who wasn’t looking particularly attentively.

I pointed out their presence by ‘throwing’ what the sensitive equipment was picking up on them to the main pilot display. Mostly, because I wasn’t really feeling the whole ‘Being chatty’ thing in this situation. Had my guess they were human, but their allegiance, that was less certain… though I would have hedged a bet on Black Flight if somebody had made one.
03 Jun 2024, 12:49pm
I swiftly reacted to the new, additional displays that just popped up on my screen.

“Looks like we’ve got quite the silent audience for our little show. The good news is, our scanners are worth their weight in credits. Any idea how good their scanners might be?”

I pondered whether these ships had a specific reason to be here. Somehow, I couldn’t quite picture Black Flight being assigned to babysit the Musashi - given the firepower of such a behemoth, the 'regular' guard would surely be sufficient for its defence.

“You reckon that’s Black Flight? Can’t quite wrap my head around them being so plentiful they’d just park here willy-nilly. Unless, of course, there’s a special occasion.”

I throttled back our speed once more and tucked us behind a Type-9, which would light up on scanners like a Christmas tree in December, hoping, in turn, it would outshine our own presence to any overly curious eyes. We continued to inch closer to the mega ship, just another ship among many others.
03 Jun 2024, 12:56pm
“I… don’t know. But, was there not that special ‘show’ on the big station… whenever it was, now? I do not remember. Did not pay much, attention. Maybe, it is why they are here.”

I breathed out, rather audibly. Something to also try and help steady the nerves… along with balling both hands into fists momentarily.

“If it is not… I cannot say. Or it is somebody else, keeping an eye on… whatever Azimuth, is doing here. As we know, there are those, who… ‘oppose’ them.”

How well the scanners on the opposing side were set out, I couldn’t tell. Or how well they would be if it was not Black Flight. I also had little clue how exactly I’d go about getting into the megaship’s security, and that wasn’t really doing much for my anxiety control either. To say it wasn’t visible, would’ve been a big lie.
03 Jun 2024, 1:45pm
"Azimuth sure has a lot of enemies, no doubt about that. Just the other day, some nutjob terrorists planted a bomb in Cartier City, putting countless innocents at risk. So, you might be onto something with Black Flight being here. You think Hothis herself is on board the Musashi?"

The whole situation was rubbing me the wrong way. Infiltrating the comms of a megaship is one thing, but doing it under the watchful eyes of Black Flight while they’re babysitting a VIP? That’s a whole new level of risky.

“We could still call the whole thing off. I mean, our plan ain’t half bad, and I’ve pulled off similar stunts with other mega ships in the past… but if there’s really a whole squadron of Black Flight buzzing around, maybe we’d be better off waiting for another time… Then again, the current chaos could be playing right into our hands. Once the dust settles and we’d have to approach the ship all alone, we’d definitely be under more scrutiny than we are now. What’s your gut telling you?”
03 Jun 2024, 1:56pm
“I should, not be here. That is what it is telling me.”

There was… definitely some annoyance within my voice. Then I sighed, but not in the usual way. What I would have needed was some reassurance, but my doubts were only reinforced.

“I… I don’t… I don’t know, if I can do this. I am not… not sure, if I am ready. I don’t want to be here. It will go wrong. Coming here was a mistake. They will catch me, and …”

I couldn’t continue the line of thought openly, but the anxious feeling just kept throwing itself at me and was at strong risk of turning into panic. The kind you didn’t want on a ship on a mission, especially.
03 Jun 2024, 2:26pm
“Whoa, easy there. We ain’t even sure if it’s Black Flight yet. Right now, you’re sitting all cozy in the Gullveig, which is taking good care of you and is well prepared to make a smooth exit, thanks to her new SCO FSD.”

I adjusted our course slightly to stay behind of the lumbering Type-9 in front of us. It was looping around the megaship, aiming for the docking bay on the opposite side. Our maneuver would bring us close to the Behemoth’s communication arrays, looming larger with every second.

“It’s like war, ain’t it? Nobody ever feels truly ready until it’s go time. Just take a deep breath and relax. And who knows, maybe this is your chance to give that damn corporation a good kick in the rear. There’s gotta be juicy data floating around here, maybe enough to shake them up in this system.”
03 Jun 2024, 2:40pm
“Calming down” was a lot easier said than done. It wasn’t her who’d be subjected to all kinds of intolerable experimentation if caught.

“I cannot focus like this. It is… it is too much.”

Right now, my instinct was to bury my head in my hands. As well as I could. But my brain, in its not yet fully working state, was just getting overwhelmed. In the outpost, it was fine, but not here.
03 Jun 2024, 3:06pm
“Well, well, looks like it’s all on me this time. But don’t fret - I won’t spill a word about what went down here. Just try not to think too much.”

I kept pace with the lumbering Type-9 ahead, already plotting a course toward the Abode.

“Just a moment longer, and we’ll be back home at the Abode. Quick flyby of that communication array over yonder- the antennas are practically waving hello - and then you’re golden.”

Truth be told, I was ill-prepared for this kind of situation. I grew up according to the Darwinian principle of 'eat or be eaten' where there was no room for tears. But a dash of humor never hurt anyone, right?

“It’s a bit like giving birth - don’t forget to breathe - or maybe like drifting off after a pizza binge. But let’s skip me singing the lullaby this time, shall we?” I joked, fingers dancing over the controls.
03 Jun 2024, 3:21pm
I threw a quick look over at my pilot, a rather not-happy one, to signify that I didn’t approve of that forced humor at all.

Then I just pushed some holographic button to… do whatever it would. Because I had no clue what I was actually supposed to do - or had forgotten between the there of planning it out, and the here of actually doing it - to get in, and just hoped it would not set off a hopeless chaos. Or accidentally turn the ship’s defenses on everything in the vicinity, including Azimuth’s ships… as entertaining as that thought was, it would only be funny if you weren’t in the targeting zone yourself.

Considering that it didn’t happen and the displays didn’t all turn red, at least I hadn’t caused every alarm on the ship to go off at once. Then I put my head back into the hands, trying to stop the thoughts from spinning out of control.
03 Jun 2024, 9:40pm
I didn't expect any complications to arise from this relatively simple mission, but they did, and they had everything to do with the history of my passenger. Personally, I would have been more nervous about the time on the landing pad than this. But you never know, and who knows what set her off.

The Gullveig was getting closer to the communication array of the mega ship. By now, we were also hailed by the behemoth itself. Fitting its size, the hail had such a volume and presence that it made my ears ache.

"This is the Musashi, an Azimuth Biotech vessel. You are authorized to begin the landing approach on landing bay two. Please confirm receipt of this message and line up behind the ships flying ahead of you."

Somewhat surprisingly, my passenger had managed to prepare the launch of the recon drones. The console in front of me indicated the opening of the hatch from which the drones were deployed.

All that was left was to somehow pull this off.
03 Jun 2024, 10:13pm
I'd closed my eyes, by now, turning the vulnerable, protective form into something more... helpful, maybe.

Think. Concentrate. Focus.

Those three words kind of, resonated, through my mind, as... guidelines, directives, to keep the mind going in one direction - words, thoughts, that didn't quite feel like my own... yet they were. The joys of having two personalities in the same head that were both aware of each other, and practically identical.

This would be a lot easier if I pulled myself together... and, maybe, we only really had one good shot at this to start with. I had half been expecting the 'Kira' half to take over, especially considering how simple this was - though I had never done it before - but she hadn't. As if, by now, she knew that I kind of had to learn how to handle these kinds of unfavorable situations, myself, too.

I came out of that 'internal' space, feeling... strange, almost, my head focused on just the task ahead, trying to ignore all of the external stimuli... mostly. And, finally, I picked up on that I had, somehow, managed to find the right button. Maybe. I wasn't sure if throwing a recon limpet at the problem was the right or planned way, but it would work. Assuming it got to its target without us getting blown out into the void. For that reason... I hesitated to push the launch function, even though the drone was programmed and ready to fleet out toward the only valid target it had.

I hoped it wouldn't try to latch onto that fat Type 9 when I did hit the button, at least. Because it was even wider and worse than me at fitting into stuff, and maneuverability.

"We need a distraction.", I said out loud... maybe a bit louder than intended, but with a quite definite, convinced tone. "They could notice the drone, otherwise."

My body would probably thank me later by being really exhausted from the focus, but it was necessary for now. And I was planning to go be lazy afterward anyway, and let my companion do the decrypting work... with the help of my stuff, if it was wanted.
