Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

“Still… watching.”, I replied. “Either, they are not Black Flight, or just… keeping track, for later.”

The second of those options wasn’t exactly comforting. Given where they sat, it was unlikely we’d pass by close enough to get a good look or scanner readout… but that also meant they wouldn’t get much of a window to interfere with the escape, if they intended to.

Hatches… I couldn’t see any open hatches, the one that launched the limpets having closed following deployment. Or maybe I’d done it subconsciously. Either way, it was not going to be one of those annoying “You forgot to close your cargo hatch, or bring the landing gear or weapons in, dummy”… I’d had a few more of those than I would’ve liked to admit.

Still, I would have preferred to have been gone already, instead of still speeding away from the mass interference of the large ship which prevented the hyperspace tunnel from being opened.
05 Jun 2024, 5:47pm
“Sounds good to me,” I replied, feeling the ship hum beneath me as we hit a decent speed.

A quick mental tally told me we weren’t quite clear of the mass lock yet, but we’d shake it off after the FSD charged up. So, I flipped the switch to start the juice flowing. We were about to light up now on every scanner in the vicinity, and I could almost hear a computerized voice droning, “FSD recharge detected.”

I flicked the flight assist back on, halting our ship’s spin as I pushed for more throttle. We were closing in on jump speed now, and the FSD recharge was also progressing rapidly. Glancing back toward the mega ship, I spotted a pair of Viper MkIIIs making a beeline for us. But even they wouldn’t catch us if things kept going according to plan.

“Brace for jump!” I hollered over my shoulder.
05 Jun 2024, 6:13pm
I wasn't bothered by or unprepared for the jump... not like this was an emergency maneuver to pull out of a hairy spot. It was more the acceleration pushing me - and certain bits of my body - into the chair quite vigorously. And the weight on my chest, into... well, me, for which there were more pleasant sensations.

At least that meant the panel wasn't pushing into my thigh as much. Being a bystander, to this part at least, I couldn't do a lot here. Other than watch and hope nothing went wrong... then again, if it did, the chances of me not being alive to have to witness the aftermath were just as high, so I kind of just sat there. Waiting, watching.
05 Jun 2024, 6:49pm
I could see on the display that the Viper MkIIIs were picking up the pace behind us. Looks like someone got a bit too curious in the end. But no immediate threat there, just a couple of nosy flies buzzing in the distance since our ship had already hit and surpassed jump speed. The FSD’s ready light blinked on, and I immediately initiated the jump sequence.

“4… 3… 2… 1… and jump.”

Before us, the hyper tunnel yawned open, swallowing our ship whole. Only few moments later, we emerged in our target system. After re-entering normal space, I eased off the throttle and gently arced away from the sun, setting a course for our next destination: the Abode.

“I love it when a plan comes together,” I chuckled. “Now you can brag about squaring off with a megaship and living to tell the tale. A legend in the making…”
05 Jun 2024, 6:57pm
“Yes. Because we fought it.”

That dry, sarcastic remark was the best my brain could come up with, in this moment. Then, I got myself busy undoing the panel’s lock and holding it, so that it didn’t just fly back into the idle position, and gently returned the mechanism to its starting position.

Having that ‘pressure’ removed was almost better than the one of being near Azimuth’s - in my view, stolen - megaship, getting relieved. I leaned back into the seat fully again. With the immediate urgency removed, I let my mind relax, and… couldn’t think of much else but to go be lazy for a bit. I had someone else who could poke into whatever we had recovered, during that time. I certainly wasn’t feeling much like doing the thing myself.
05 Jun 2024, 7:31pm
“After all, we outsmarted them,” I said with a smirk, my voice echoing through the cockpit as I piloted the ship towards the Abode. The control stick felt like an extension of my own body, responsive to every subtle movement. I flicked the comm switch with a practiced ease, and requested landing clearance from flight control.

“You’re probably itching to get back home, huh? To shake off all that excitement,” I mused aloud, though the thrill of the chase still coursed through my veins. “I’m beat, for sure. All that running around in Howarth Engineering, and now this stint at the helm - it takes its toll.” I leaned back in the pilot’s seat, stretching out the kinks.

"But ... I think we've achieved something pretty impressive," I continued. "Now I'm curious to see if you get anything out of the Black Flight ship's data pad over the next few days. You mentioned that it was specially encrypted, didn't you? I can take a look at what we have from the Musashi."
05 Jun 2024, 9:31pm
“Days… I don’t know. It may not take that long. But, I will just… leave my things to run on it. And go be lazy, while they are. Because, I am …” A yawn kind of escaped through my mouth. “Tired.”

Mostly, just from the focus which I had to pull myself into to make things work as they did. Doubtful I would be telling stories about this… at least, not soon. Not that I was much of a teller anyway. More of one to do the deeds which others then reported on… good or bad.

“Maybe I have something, tomorrow, already. Or, maybe not. I will see.”

All I knew was that it’d be nice to just be a lazy floaty piece of big curves for a while in my quarters, occasionally bouncing into the walls lightly, until I felt it was time to wrap up and - figuratively - drift away. No external interruptions, because that was my private time… and I didn’t want people to see me doing that, anyhow.
05 Jun 2024, 10:40pm
“Alright. Just buzz me when you’ve got something. I’m dropping you off at your place for now,” I said.

As we finally got the green light to land, I steered towards the Abode, letting it fill up our entire view. Then I throttled down the Gullveig, pulling her into a sleek curve, and settled her soft as a feather onto the assigned landing pad.

Following the standard drill, we were whisked down by the elevator into the belly of the ship while the heavy hatches sealed above us. I could feel the weight of the silence as the carrier embraced us.

“Well, that’s it for now. Here’s where our journey together ends for the time being. I hope the flight wasn't too unpleasant?”
05 Jun 2024, 11:20pm
“It… could have been worse. That is all which I will say.”

A lot worse, even, but it worked out, and I’d proven to myself and the person that relied on me that I could do it. Or, at least, the new, and recovering, me, whose brain couldn’t yet make a fully functioning adult mind work within it. But it was getting there… slowly, if surely. I stood up out of the chair.

“If we ‘ride’ again, you may make adjustments to the big seat. Like …” I held both hands on top of each other, with a certain gap between them. “More higher panels. Unless you would like me to ‘play’ with them. And a little more space, to the sides.”

“I will go now. And, tell you, when I have something. Or… you may have a thing first. If you, need my… decryption thingies, you can, ask.”

With that said, I turned to walk out of the cockpit, though keeping my ears open for anything else being said to me as I did so. And, though the main show was over, watching me waltz out had to be its own, or the finishing act.
06 Jun 2024, 3:06pm
“I’ll take your suggestions into account, but next time we should not only change your seat but also the whole ship to have some more space.” I said, as I rose from my seat out of courtesy as my passenger prepared to leave the cockpit. You could accuse me of many things, but I did have a hint of manners.

“Your decryption tools are always welcome. You know, I’m more of a hands-on type” I said grinning, referring to the experience with the examination of the suit computer on board her carrier.

“See you soon. And watch out for the exit hatch, it gets a bit tighter there.” I said, as I watched my passenger make her way out.
06 Jun 2024, 3:20pm
“I will, get through it. Do not worry.”, I said over my shoulder, and… noticed my pistol kind of just floating there, at the end of the cockpit. I fished it out of the air without a comment, and proceeded to make my way to the exit of the ship.

Once I did get there - thanks to forgetting whether it had been a front or back entrance - I kept in mind that, if any cameras were present, I’d likely have a silent observer… not that I could fault her. I was certainly somewhat of an object of interest, to observe.

I still pulled a silly face with my hands on the hips once I was in the airlock, then I squeezed out its other end too, since designers for some reason always thought their respective ends had to be narrower than the surrounding space, or the one they separated from the ship interior. And walked out of the hangar at a moderate pace - being on the pad when it got lifted out into the vacuum wouldn’t be too interesting of an experience, even if I’d probably survive it.

Then, on to the personal cabin I had on this carrier. Out of the more constricting suit, and clothes, into some baggy sleepwear… without any significant gravity, I could pass on the bra, too. After sealing the door, I just allowed myself to float around a bit, as I’d wanted, because… it did help me relax. Once I was in the right spot, and after a few ‘collisions’ with walls, usually with the “big bumper”, I guided myself over to the sleeping spot lazily, and quickly drifted away. That had been… even more tiring than I’d thought.
06 Jun 2024, 4:23pm
I watched her as she snatched the floating weapon out of the air and then made her way out without a word. It was time for me to do the same - but for a moment, I found it hard to tear my eyes away from the spectacle she presented. I caught myself wondering how it would look if the rather stiff suit didn’t restrict her curves so much. Then I dismissed the weird thought as quickly as it had come.

I flew the Gullveig, which had lived up to its name and safely transported its entrusted treasures (namely us), back to my own carrier, while the lyrics “Kasumi bump bump bump, making hearts jump jump jump” kept running through my head in tune with a strangely cheerful melody that I had encountered somewhere recently. The combination was a total earworm.

Once I arrived at my own carrier, I stomped to my own cabin, looking forward to a shower, a good amount of Lavian Brandy, and lots of snacks, not necessarily in that order, and maybe even in combination - at least as far as the Brandy and the shower were concerned.
06 Jun 2024, 5:37pm
Darkness slowly faded, releasing me from the void of unconsciousness, into… freely floating around within the room, once my senses came to enough to realize it. That could have been rather embarrassing, but luckily, I was not too far from a wall.

Would have to check if the sleeping bag’s zipper was already beginning to wear. Or whether I’d just not closed it properly. Later…

For now, I… noticed the recovered Black Flight device, innocently attached to the side of a wall via its magnetic contact surface. I floated over, to take a brief look - my software had worked its magic already, it seemed. But too early to go over its files.

My brain was telling me to have some shower fun. And I’d definitely do that first - so I floated over there instead, not quite missing the thought of some of me looking overinflated, in this context.
06 Jun 2024, 6:44pm
I greeted the new day with a growling stomach and the remnants of yesterday’s catchy tune already humming on my lips as I woke. A quick glance at the clock told me it was late morning, a perfect time for a lady of my… unconventional profession to rise and shine.

After the usual morning scrub-up and a hearty, though not overly indulgent meal, I lounged back, letting my mind wander through the previous day’s escapades. That’s when it hit me - I hadn’t yet laid eyes on the data we’d snatched from the Musashi’s comms array.

I rummaged through the pile of yesterday’s attire and unearthed the data pad, the very same one I’d downloaded the data onto. Seems I tackled the task post-shower - a thorough moisturising of both body and palate, utilizing both water and brandy. And I felt top-notch, not a hint of a hangover in sight. Nothing beats a rugged constitution, I mused.

A peek at the data pad confirmed I had indeed kicked off the decryption tools, courtesy of Kasumi. Now, all that was left was to see if the whole affair had borne any fruit.
06 Jun 2024, 9:25pm
As usual, I’d pretty much turned the local bathroom into a steam bath. Or sauna, but it was never really going to change, that. I liked spending time under a hot stream of water too much, for too long. By normal standards, which I didn’t care for in the slightest.

I inspected the datapad again once I was, mostly, dry, and at least in my underwear… trying to figure out exactly how it’d gotten here, because I sure couldn’t remember bringing it. Then again, I had been somewhat absent-minded in the moment of leaving, so maybe I’d grabbed it without really consciously registering the act. Or my memory was just acting up badly… also possible, especially since it was still “morning” by Earth standards. And I hated morning.

With that notion in mind… I just pushed off the wall lightly and let myself drift around the room, as I inspected the decrypted contents of the datapad. Not a lot to be found on it, but a data file detailing an incident involving an “insurgent attack” that had led to the breach of a containment unit, which held a supposed experimental pathogen named ‘Helix’… a name which rang a bell. That had been something the spy systems onboard the Lakon brick caught, as we were still in Xi Wangda, in an emergency transmission.

There was also a mention of a “ABEL-4” in that same document. Which had been sent to that facility where the outbreak had occurred, by all looks of it. Was that Black Flight ship part of their unit? It seemed possible… they were certainly mentioned too, though more in regards to monitoring surrounding stations for an outbreak.

Either way… mobile liquidators weren’t the best of news to be had. Not that I was convinced it would be a great idea to investigate the site of that containment breach, unless it’d been cleansed by now. Chances were said cleanup crew was also still present there.

At least, I knew what “ABEL-4” was, now. That left only number 3… if I hadn’t just forgotten about it again, already. Though I wasn’t sure about 1 either, only that 2 was supposedly that mobile lab.

The pad also included a snapshot of what appeared to be the navigation readout of a ship, pointing to a system in the Col 285 Sector region… and, with a bit of squinting, planet A 2. Then I was momentarily distracted by my big ‘rear bumper’ meeting a wall, and looked at the pad again. To see if it had any information on where the ship was headed, but the only other thing I got out of it was that it was actually supposed to be a “VIP escort” and damaged by ‘anarchists’ on its way through a war zone.

Given that I wasn’t awake for long and my brain hadn’t exited its ‘powering up’ phase yet, I left sending a message to my counterpart in this mess for when I was properly awake. Maybe a little nap… while I continued to occasionally bump around the room. I’d have done that even without my big body, but it made it more ‘exciting’.
