Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Creamy Goodness III"Fail safe? For Creamy's personal assistant?" laughed Séraphine "No no my treasure" she said referencing Maul's last name.

It wasn't the first time Maul had heard his last name translated into English and it always made him smile. Besides his parents, he never knew of any other family members or history. The name was of French origin but neither of his parents spoke the language or spoke much about their past for that matter. Now that he was older, he had questions, but now there was no one to ask.

He shook the thought from his mind and focused again.

"Right, is there any contact history logs for the last day that she saw Goodness? Whoever nabbed her had to have had their own ship. Maybe she picked up on the ships name and ID as it approached?" He said, adding to Vasil's list. "...Or like Vasil said, what about security footage from that day? Audio recordings, passive wireless signals by any comms device or personal compute devices that may have been picked up by Ninette? Anything like that?"

"Who is to say they dropped or flatlined Creamy in the system they were caught?" Maul said looking back and forth at Vasil and WIllow with a shrug and then back to Seraphine. "Maybe she overheard the captors talking about it though."

No my treasure is it, noticed Willow. She had to take a good hard look at Maul. There wasn't a lot to distinguish him from other hoodie-wearing drifters everywhere, and Séraphine was a real attractive, high energy, highly successful woman. Why would she be flirting with Maul of all people?

Maybe she was flirtatious; the sort of person that made friends just by saying hi. Someone like her sister Ash used to be.

"Er, yeah sure" said Willow to stop herself from dwelling on memories of Ash, and get the childish idea out of her head, that Séraphine would be like her older sister, and they would become friends.

"I think you got it covered guys. Like that's everything right? Other than his current location and pules rate I guess, that could help"

Willow didn't want to be rude, but Séraphine didn't seem concerned for Creamy at all. If she didn't speak now, she never would, and Ash would have come straight out with it the moment she noticed.

"Um so, we've said a few times he's like, missing for a long time, and you don't seem to, ah. That is um. So you've been tracking him for years, and you're not upset. What's up with that?"
28 Aug 2024, 11:20am
Maul gave Willow a side glance and opened his mouth to agree with her on calling out Seraphine for her lack of concern. Nothing came out. Instead, his eyebrows scrunched as he narrowed his eyes on the Doctor and awaited her response.
28 Aug 2024, 1:03pm
"Oh précieux corbeau, this is Creamys life" She said gently, patting Willow's hand.

"What I am tracking is Ninette's growth. Creamy is someone I know well enough to make a good assistant program for. Let me tell you this Corbeau, what would upset Creamy more than being taken once agian, is knowing he had caused a girl as belle as you, to worry about him" A conspiratorial wink accompanied Séraphine's compliment.

"When first I met Creamy, Sovereign Shield swooped in spoiling the field trip for everyone, because agents of another house had tried to take him. Unfortunately for them, Creamy was fed up with this behavior, and had learned to defend himself."

Plenty of hand gestures accompanied her explanation, as if Séraphine was reliving the experience in her mind, trying to convoy the excitement. A few of the robotic appendages did their best to copy her movements.

"You see Corbeau, abduction is considered normal political life for some familles impériales. If you, or your children, are not the target of underhanded dealings, you are not important, vous comprenez? I am confident that Maître Vasilescu will attest, that what most families playing the political game fear, is irrelevance, no?" Séraphine asked Vasil rhetorically.

"Creamy is used to this life. He is so very strong, a good pilot, and deals with the problem in front of him without distractions. Et quoi de plus, Océane tells me you have assembled quite the team Monsieur Vasilescu"

"An imperial that understands the value of a family name. A cavalier, boot-straps hacker, and a raven as dedicated to details as Huginn & Muninn, no? A better team to find him I could not assemble. Bien que, I may employ some tueur à gages, um, mercenaries, no? Creamy dose attract danger, vous comprenez?"

Political relevance was not something the Vasilescus had enjoyed for many generations, but his sister was changing that with ERS. However, even when Vasilescus were senators or Imperial advisors the family refused to play the game of abduction politics. “Throughout its history, my family has never paid kidnappers any form of ransom, Doctor, even when the threats are of a mortal nature.”

The Doctor’s mannerisms had changed when talking about Goodness, and she referred to him as Creamy. Vasil supposed there was some familiarity beyond him being a good subject for developing a personal assistant program. The depth of that familiarity bore no relevance to the situation as far as he was concerned, but it was an observation he tucked away in case it was needed later.

Getting back to the subject of Ninette, he said, “The pirates from which I obtained Ninette had a reason for keeping it. While they may be the best source for what happened to Goodness, I doubt they would be agreeable to discussing why they kept it for so long after his disappearance. What I traded to them was not exactly what they wanted. So, we are left with trying to piece together bits of info from Ninette.”

Kasumi Goto"I, think so, yes. Unless, you want to borrow it."

That was of course just teasing. I knew neither of us had any particular interest in "borrowing" Helix, or a lab developing it, for that matter.

"But, yes, good question... for, how to find, the transport. And, follow it. I, have... no idea."

"The fact that there is so much going on makes everything seemingly incredibly difficult, but in the end, it doesn't really matter whether ten ships spot us or a hundred… I have a Federal Gunship at my disposal, and even an Imperial ship, with which we could fake respective identities. Then there is the computer from the crashed Type-10, which theoretically could let us pose as Black Flight – but we don't have the prep time for that, and the other options seem unpromising. Maybe it is another job for Gullveig…"

I thought about how the ship had served us well before, and a freighter would probably be the least suspicious. Thanks to the fact that the ship appeared to be just a transporter but was instead a flying surveillance unit, there was a good chance that we could track the Azimuth Logistics freighter in the asteroid belt.
28 Aug 2024, 4:10pm
“Oh, so I get to- break panels, in the box, again.”, I stated in a dry, amused tone, not quite able to stop a silly look from appearing on my face, at remembering that… ‘incident’. Also couldn’t stop myself from mocking the traditional “Lakon box” appearance a little.

“If, you still have - the, big seat, installed?”

The transport ship disguise did seem like the best option, again… but I had some concerns that it would not fly as easily as it did when approaching the Musashi which accepted civilian traffic. These megaships, not so likely. At least, not in these circumstances, even if they usually allowed ships in the vicinity so long as they behaved themselves. In the assumption that the crews of those megaships knew what they were moving the tritium for… they were likely a bit itchy on the triggers.

But it would probably be fine, anyway.

“We are, taking that ship, yes?”
28 Aug 2024, 4:34pm
“It’s just as we left it. Which is both good and bad… I did say we’d try to get you a better seat, but we haven’t had the time yet,” I said, my tone carrying a hint of apology.

“Otherwise, it’s operational, just as you remember. Though the techs did ask us to be gentle with the displays…” I added, barely suppressing a wide grin.

I started to rise from the copilot’s seat while adding, “We should be prepared for a spacewalk. If the opportunity arises, we need to get to that station somehow.”
28 Aug 2024, 7:34pm
“I guess, I could bring a helmet. Maybe, the armored one. And… probably, a weapon. Or, two. But, if we go, into the station, I may… want a, different suit. Artemis, well… not really, made for combat.”

I accompanied that final sentence with a shrug. We both probably knew that, though it was good to cover for the eventuality of running into some trouble onboard, and we were likely going to have to go into it.

“But, will have some time, to change. While the ship gets ready. Is, there… anything else, to plan?”

“And, I will survive, the chair. After all… it… is, more like, cushioning. Mostly.”

I accompanied this with a glance down, at the absurd amount of mass on my thighs. It was also a bit of a weird thing, that it was sort of enjoyable to be constrained in the seat because I was too big, even with it made wider to contain my oversized lower half. But I would not have admitted that very openly to this person. And I could still get up out of it after acceleration ceased, so it was not a particular issue.

Vasil Vasilescu Getting back to the subject of Ninette, he said, “The pirates from which I obtained Ninette had a reason for keeping it. While they may be the best source for what happened to Goodness, I doubt they would be agreeable to discussing why they kept it for so long after his disappearance. What I traded to them was not exactly what they wanted. So, we are left with trying to piece together bits of info from Ninette.”

"Speaking of these pirates; Doctor, Creamy appeared to be mixed up with some very dangerous individuals this time around, more so than you likely expect. Not your standard snatch and grab kinda outfit. Can this Océane of yours find anything on a 'Vengerfield'?" Maul had exhausted all his sources trying to find anything to do with this mysterious individual but remained empty handed. "My bet is that it won't find even a single mention of the name anywhere on the net or whatever databases it sources its info from." His tone became more serious as he dropped whatever polite facade he had tried to create to better fit in. "People like that, ghosts, they're fucking dangerous, unpredictable. Worse is that this particular individual has an army of loyal pirates willing to die for their cause. No amount of mercenaries could protect you from someone like that if you get too close."

He looked at Vasil briefly, giving a nod in his direction but still speaking to the Doctor.

"The pirate Mr. Vasilescu is talking about is part of that outfit." He said, referring to the fleet carrier battle that Vasil had witnessed. "But if people like that had Ninette in their possession, it's probably safe to assume that they didn't give a shit about Imp politics."

"Now, my apologies if I'm coming off as rude or presumptuous but I think we all would very much like to bring some sort of closure to the ones who cared about Mr. Goodness. Whether that means finding him alive or finding his remains. So if Ninette picked up anything from that day that could give us a lead, we'd be highly appreciative."
29 Aug 2024, 11:15am
Her glow didn't dim, but her eyes became more serious. The reality of a pilot's life is it can end at any moment. Caring for someone that could be taken away over a few cargo pods was not good for an inquiring mind. Although Séraphine had kept her distance after the academy, that was not the same as disconnecting from Creamy all together.

"Je comprends. Let us see what Ninette can tell us, yes?"

Working backwards from Ninettes last contact with Creamy, Séraphine built a picture of what the AI had managed to record. It had been a long time since she had last checked Ninettes growth, and she was surprised to find it had made a fair amount of new pathways it used to interact with Creamy. Older programs didn't grow much after the first few years, but Ninette seemed to be doing well. Professional curiosity would have to wait, she had a secret to find.

What ever had happened, it wasn't a straight forward abduction at all. For a man as basic as Creamy, he had an unnatural ability to cause complications for people around him.

Trimming the fat and personal information, Séraphine made a file for the hunting party and sent it to their devices. She was trying not to show she was worried now, but what she learned didn't bode well for the chances of finding Creamy alive. The best thing she could do to hide it was talk technical.

"Tu as demandé, et je réponds Monsieur Montresor. Océane is a proficient gestalt program, but it has limitations. It still needs a way in, or it is only browsing, the same as us. Only much faster but without nuancer, er, nuance, yes? That it is learning, slowly"

"Here is what I can do. I will send to you a program, and a malware version that will let Océane in, should you request its assistance. Put Océane where you think the information is hidden, and it will be found"

"Also, I am taking from Ninette all its duties for Creamy, making a new blank PA program. His Ninette is safe, but its descendants are new, benefitting from Ninettes growth, that is if you want one, naturellement. The more programs out there being used, the more we learn how sentient machines emerge, and most importantly, how to spot them before it happenes"

"Oh, and I must remind you, using an altered covas is illegal under Pilots Fedaration legislation. Although the PA program can easily be installed over an existing covas, you should not do this. compris?"

Kasumi Goto“But, will have some time, to change. While the ship gets ready. Is, there… anything else, to plan?”

“And, I will survive, the chair. After all… it… is, more like, cushioning. Mostly.”

“I figure we just need to keep the clues we have in mind. Other than that, a decent suit and something to blow up the station - or at least its tech - would be handy. I’ll bring my silenced weapon again, just in case we need to go in quietly. Otherwise, I am counting on you for the heavier firepower.”

I fully rose from the chair now, stretching my limbs and turning towards my companion with a sly grin.

“I’ll go prep the ship then. Once you’re ready, meet me on the Gullveig - you remember the way to her hangar from last time, don’t you?”
29 Aug 2024, 2:01pm
“Uh …”

I scratched my head, tilting it slightly.

“I think, you… came, to my carrier, with it, actually. I do not recall, or know, where it is, here.”
29 Aug 2024, 2:38pm
“Uh… so much has happened by now, I can’t even remember when or where we started. But I do recall how tricky it was getting in there with you…”

I flashed a wide grin, remembering the first boarding we did.

“Alright then, the Gullveig is in Hangar 11. Catch you later.”
29 Aug 2024, 2:45pm
“Actually, maybe, you… could …”

I ended up gesturing randomly a bit, before one finger pointed roughly in the region of the greatly enhanced chest.

“Lot, of work, to… put on, armor, alone. There. Help, maybe?”

It would make things faster. I wouldn’t judge if I was told it was not to be, though, and stood up myself, waiting to see the response.
