Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

“Just one more moment. Perhaps you can give us a better overview of what lies ahead by converting what the scanners capture into some kind of display of this place...?”

I briefly considered introducing my companion to what we called the 'Pirate Carousel' - a covert approach to a target using a specially modified escape pod that wouldn’t draw attention. However, I quickly realized that there probably wasn’t an escape pod, modified or not, capable of accommodating my companion. I made a note for future improvements and decided not to bring up the touchy topic for now.

“Maybe after we learn more about this facility, we could get there with our spacesuits and some accelerator bagpacks?”

"I... guess... but."

I threw a look down at my armor, kind of behind myself.

"Not sure, one can attach. Especially, not, with weapons." I would very definitely not be going without at least one of them, beside the pistol which could go on the thigh. "And, I do... not know, how to 'convert', into picture."

If anything, I was totally lost about what that woman was going on about with 'creating a picture out of the sensor data'.

Willow Thorn"Let me do a few calculations here. So, given we are in Imperial space right now, and like, Creamy was transfused to the Off, Ophoheis. Er, the other carrier, waaaay over galactic west about a year ago, and our last known location information is like, a week old, I'd guess it could be..."

She paused knowing the guys knew the answer already, so the punch line would just be rubbing it in.

"Absolutely fucking anywhere. So yeah, you go check out those star systems, I'll stay here. Kay?"

“My guess is the base of operations is likely not in the bubble unless they are affiliated with Delaine’s Kumo Crew, which I don’t think they are. The Anansi was beat to hell in the fight, so it is going to need a yard period somewhere friendly, or at least willing to tolerate a pirate raider in system.”

Vasil called up the deep field navigation system he used for exploration, projecting the 3D charts so that they filled the cockpit with stars. Rising from the pilot seat, Vasil moved through the starfield. Somewhere among the hundred thousand specks of light was The Ophois, the Anansi, and Creamy, or what was left of him.

“Jefferson, search public Omnipol alerts regarding pirate activity for any references to Anansi or Ophois.” He remembered that Red Jade and the IISS attacked the Anansi to stop its illegal slaving activity. ERS was a member of the Imperial Slave Association, so maybe there was some info to be found there as well. “Also, search ISA databanks using ERS class one trader access. Look for illegal slave activity referencing the Anansi. Limit both searches to the past ninety days. Filter nav based on findings.”

A few minutes later Jefferson announced, “Results are based on available data as of last synchronization, two days ago.” The filtered map had just over a hundred stars remaining.

Vasil sent the filtered chart to Willow and Maul. “All of those results are in the bubble, but it is a starting point to help determine if there are any favored jump locations or other patterns.”
07 Sep 2024, 6:31am
Somewhere between Willow's attitude and the time it took to receive Vasil's filtered star chart, Maul felt the weight of being at a true loss of what to do next. The embers of a fire once doused by constant defeat began to come to life again.

"Know what? Fuck it. Can't do shit from here but speculate. Maybe I'll go visit the Anansi again while it's still being repaired and see about finding a lead that's a bit better than staring at virtual spirals and shit. No offense Willow. They are cool looking spirals."

Last time he'd blackmailed one of Vodan's crew member into giving him access to some of the ships logs but perhaps this time with the help of Oceane or his own AVA, he could find something more. That was, if their numbers were still as thin as they were last time.

"I mean, if these carriers were working together at any point, then there's gotta be more info that was swapped, right? Calls, messages, file transfers, plans, whatever. Hell, maybe they even discussed Goodness at some point. The fuck else do we got to lose? If shit hits the fan, then at least Willow will still be able to find something here out of these old FSD wakes. Worst case scenario, we still get a lead."
07 Sep 2024, 11:21pm
Nothing may look like what he was doing, but Vodan was balls deep in number crunching. Just because he had his feet up and his music in his ears, it didn't mean he wasn't making plans to get back what he lost, completely at someone else expense. That was the pirate way. There were a lot of things he didn't need while he tried to web together the many parts he had on his mind, and a cable whip to the leg was really high on that list.

His eyes snapped open and fix angrily on the not unpleasant form of Belladonna.

"The fuck Bell, you want to get your narrow ass spaced?"

She gave him the look she almost always had around Vodan. Contained disgust. "You have a few names on priority watch, and you were not responding to nudges or polite choughs" she said putting down the electrical lead. "Some of our guys checking in on the Jester wreckage spotted Long Road and confirmed Vasil as the pilot"

Putting his feet on the deck, Vodan sat up to pay attention. "Da fuck was he doing there?" he asked taking his ear buds out.

"Unclear, captain. But he was there with the hacker Mercy employed, and that little version of me we met in the Galactic last year.

"Yeah, the hacker I know. We should get him on board. But I don't remember any cheap-ass last-credit-whore being there. But then, I was talking to Silvia. She's pretty distracting"

Bell raised her eyebrows in agreement, but didn't want to dwell on anyone that maybe prettier than her, and she ignored the insult. "Willow Thorn, captain" She said steering Vodan away from Silvia "An undertaker, salvager, engineer, and pretty good at finding things that are lost"

"Right right" nodded Vodan pretending he was keeping up "So, what are they looking for?"

"Don't know"

"Then we better find out. Any chance we get to piss on his plans, is a chance I want to take" said Vodan standing up. "Speaking of, how we doing at infiltrating ED's settlements"

"Infiltration with is easy with almost everyone being a refugee, but we are staying quiet. Learning the lay of the land, so when we are ready to do something, we know what to do"

"Good keep it that way. I'm stock piling weapons and drugs for when we know who that players are, and how to use them. I want every place they touch turned into a city of vice and violence"

"But we.."

"Yeah I know. We aint got the manpower to make a fucking dolls house of harsh language right now, but I'm working on it"

"Your always working on it, captain" said Bell giving the title captain all the respect she'd save for rotten meat.

"What ever Bell, suck a chode. Keep some passers by on Vasil and his friends. Don't follow um, but have people find them regular, ok?"

"Yes" said Bell as if he was trying to teach her the ABC's "I know how to have someone tailed discreetly"

A few routine information scans pinged the Always Lost’s sensors. Vasil thought nothing of it, given the number of salvagers picking over the Jester. Jefferson responded in kind, by sending out scans of its own as a way of saying, “I see you seeing me.” Though Jefferson detected no hostile intent, it quietly set the chaff launcher and point defense pod to primary power just in case.

“Yeah, Maul, working the Anansi angle while Willow unsmears her wake painting is a good idea. The more puzzle pieces we have, the better picture we are going to get. But try not to get too frustrated or impatient. Speaking from experience, especially with impatience, they both lead mistakes.”
08 Sep 2024, 9:39am
"Yeah, there's no point you guys being here" she said tweaking the instruments.

"Right now, watching how the carrier wakes in this area are dissipating will help me rebuild the one we're interested in. Whatever, its going to take days. Don't worry guys, I got loads of supplies, and the Barbs living quarters are pretty sweet. Not like, Honour Promise sweet, but pretty sweet, you know?"

"Do what ya gotta do, kay?"

Vasil skimmed over an operational report from the Emerald Dawn. "Torval," he muttered. The invitation to have the Emerald Dawn operate out of one of the senator's exploited systems, and the tour of the ship by some of her representatives had to be more of Octavia's political maneuvering.

"You two are the professionals, so I'll let you do your work. If you need anything, let me know. I'll hang around for a bit but need to make an official appearance for ERS. Let me know if you need anything."

After reading through all of the recent message traffic for ERS and the Emerald Dawn, Vasil drafted a quick response directly to Captain Whitney on the Emerald Dawn.

Captain Whitney,
No slaves are to be sold to any person or organization affiliated with Senator Torval,  especially contracts transferred to us from Errand of Mercy. If pressed for a reason, the slaves support ongoing ERS efforts building settlements and repairing damaged stations. Their contracts are not for sale or transfer outside of ERS official activity. If anyone in ERS claims otherwise, refer them to me. I'll be on board in a few hours.

Kasumi Goto"Not sure, one can attach. Especially, not, with weapons." I would very definitely not be going without at least one of them, beside the pistol which could go on the thigh. "And, I do... not know, how to 'convert', into picture."

If anything, I was totally lost about what that woman was going on about with 'creating a picture out of the sensor data'.

“All right, let me help you. Here... That should work.”

I instructed the on-board computer to visualize the data received from the ship's advanced sensors. A true-color display wasn't possible because we didn't have a direct view of the target, but the time of flight of the signals, as well as the strength and type of their reflection, could be evaluated. This resulted in a somewhat unstable but sufficiently clear display and gave us a first impression of our target.

“Pretty would be quite the exaggeration... but I think you can see enough detail. The station is bigger than I thought, and the ground around it is uneven, as you'd expect from an asteroid. It also seems to contain some kind of metal, which explains the white, washed out areas in the image.”

I took a closer look at the facility, zoomed in and rotated it back and forth a little.

“I think that big round part there can be opened. Which might explain the signals we've received several times now, which almost went off the scale. Other than that... well, I don't know. We'll have to get there and in there somehow. Any suggestions?”

“Uh…”

I lifted my right hand to scratch my head in the typical thinking manner, only to stop halfway when I remembered yet again, that I forgot I wore a helmet.

“… no. Sorry.”

The only thing coming to mind was the obvious fact that we could not land a ship near there. Even if we had managed to approach undetected, it would be noticed quite easily upon getting close.

“Well, since we can't get any closer with the ship undetected...” I looked at Kasumi with my next words, hoping she would disagree with me, ”...and propulsion units on the back of our suits seem to be out of the question...”

I paused for a moment and sighed.

“...I guess we have no choice but to return to the carrier. Now that we at least know the location of the Helix lab, we could return with another ship that has a fighter bay. We may be able to carry out a covert landing on the asteroid using these small fighters.”
09 Sep 2024, 4:11pm
“Well… there- is, a… uh… less, comfortable, option.”, I said, kind of timidly. Because it would definitely be a bit awkward.

“I, could… uh… hang on, to you.”

I paused for a second. It wouldn’t just be a little weird.

“But, if, not… then… we go back. We know… where, this is now, no?”

Another idea occurred to me, then, thinking over the idea of me clinging to that other woman.

“Hm… actually… maybe, you have, anchor lines? I could, attach to belt, and… you pull me along, with it. Gently.”

… in the assumption that inertia and the mass involved did not ruin it from the get go.

I nodded thoughtfully and considered the plan. Then I left my seat and went to a compartment near the cockpit door. For a few moments, I rummaged through the storage space in search of the right equipment. After a moment, I found what I was looking for: a compact power pack. I pulled it out and examined it closely to make sure it was in working order. The device was sleek and sturdy and designed for maneuverability in the vacuum of space.

“I think this should work,” I said more to myself than to Kasumi. I attached the propulsion unit to my suit and felt a slight vibration as it connected. A green status signal confirmed to me that the thrusters were online and working properly.

Next, I turned my attention to another compartment. I knew I had anchor lines stored somewhere. My fingers roamed over various tools and supplies until I finally found a sturdy anchor line. I pulled it out and checked its strength and flexibility.

Satisfied, I went back to Kasumi and handed her the anchor line. “Here, this should do it,” I said, while handing it to her. ”We can attach this to our belts, and then we'll leave the ship through the airlock and take a walk in space. What do you say?"
09 Sep 2024, 9:46pm
"Ok. Sure. Just... be, careful. With movement - me, at the other end, you... do not, want to swing around."

My understanding, at least the current one, of space physics was that it was not a great idea to commit any too sudden or abrupt changes in direction when there was a significantly heavier object attached at the other end of a line. Which we were about to do.

I flipped the panels away from my body - the correct way, not the 'thigh-spring' one - and left the line floating for a moment while I grabbed my weapons from a storage compartment. Then, with them attached to their respective spots, took the anchor line again.

"Will put this on, in the airlock. If, you would ..."

A gesture followed indicating I wanted my companion to walk ahead. Spatial constraints notwithstanding, I would be going behind with that anchor line anyway, so there was no point in me walking ahead.
09 Sep 2024, 11:01pm
"One moment, please..."

I retrieved my weapons from my cabin room and returned while still attaching them to my maverick suit. Then I took a deep breath and nodded.

Next, we made our way to the airlock, the metallic floor and walls of the ship echoing our footsteps. I felt my heart pounding in my chest as we reached the door of the airlock. On the other side, the silence of space awaited us. The enormity of what we were about to do flashed through my mind.

I turned and took one end of the anchor line from Kasumi and fastened it to my own suit, giving it a firm tug to ensure it was secure.

“Ready.” I said, my voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through me.

"Now it is your turn."
