Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"And I, am going to, clean the boots, after this. Or, leave the suit, in the airlock. Also... does yours, not, have night vision?"

Because mine did. I'd forgotten to switch it on, though. Would be helpful even alongside the flashlight. It allowed me to see further down the corridor, but other than showing me additional signs of fighting, in the form of bullet impacts, the occasional lost or abandoned weapon, with scorch marks and blood stains on walls and floor revealed by a flashlight when it passed over them. And whatever was on the ceiling that neither of us saw unless looking that way deliberately... which, right now, I saw no reason to. I had my eyes on the floor anyway, try to keep as much of the gunk off my boots as possible.

Hopefully, the data processor would be in a better state than this mess. Both physically and in terms of cleanliness.
08 Jul 2024, 7:44pm
“It has its uses, sure, but for this, I am not a fan of the night vision mode. It messes with the real impressions too much for my liking.”

I followed Kasumi down the corridor, trying to dodge the worst of the grime and gore scattered around. Finally, to our right, the door we were looking for appeared. It was a bit wider than the others and stood slightly open, probably unable to close completely due to the power outage. The gap in the middle was narrow, just enough to slip a finger through. I pointed at the door with a sly grin.

“There. Biomechatronics. That’s the door. It’s almost closed… with a bit of luck, we’ll find everything intact behind it. But the lack of power worries me.”
08 Jul 2024, 7:53pm
"We can, just, give it some. I, say. Not having, power... could be, damage, to the conduits. Maybe. Don't know."

I gave that door another look over.

"We could, force, that open, maybe. But, I, am not, going to squeeze, through. Either, it opens completely, or, not."

Not that I had any ideas about alternative paths to take if it wouldn't open wide enough for me to fit my round body through. The vents certainly weren't an option.
09 Jul 2024, 1:57pm
I took a closer look at the door, scanning it thoroughly with my suit’s sensors.

“Doubt we can brute-force our way through… but maybe we can juice it up, as you said. I noticed there’s still some backup power flowing, just it doesn't reach where it needs to be.”

I whipped out my arc cutter and got to work on the door panel. Sparks flew as I cut through the metal, the sound echoing down the corridor. After a few moments, the panel fell away, revealing a mess of partially fused wires.

“Alright, let’s see if I can bypass this,” I muttered, reaching into the tangle. My fingers worked quickly, connecting and disconnecting wires until finally, there was a mechanic click. The door creaked open a few centimeters further, stopped and then opened fully, albeit at a snail's pace.

“Got it,” I said as the door was open enough for us to go through.

Inside, the lab was shrouded in darkness, with only the emergency lights casting an eerie glow over the equipment. Shelves lined the walls, crammed with various parts and tools. Tables were scattered with biomechatronic gear, some of it still flickering with intermittent power.

“We need to find the main console. From there we might be able to restore some power and access the data we need. Let’s move. We don’t know how long we’ve got before the backup generators in this section give out completely.”
09 Jul 2024, 3:44pm
"Ok... sure."

I waited for her to be through the door first, then went myself, still finding it funny that I took up most or even all of a doorframe on my own without even trying. I wanted to pose in it in a 'No one is getting through here!' way, but this wasn't the place for something of that silliness. Ignoring the gear scattered around, I began looking for the main console, my eyes not having any issues with the low light conditions. Wasn't long before I found one - and the machine it was attached to - that looked important enough to be it... and not too worried for traps either. The amount of dust gathered up on stuff definitely had me thinking nobody'd been in this part of the station for ages, not even a daring salvager.

Maybe the laser battery had just been a remnant of old internal defense mechanisms. Those had a tendency to be built rugged and have a longer lifespan. I swiped the layer of dust off the console and tapped on its screen, waiting for a reaction, keeping my weapon in the left hand. Probably wouldn't come quickly, if one did, given the age and general state of the equipment. Could only be lucky parts of the hull remained intact enough to shield it from solar and cosmic radiation.

"You, better not, zap me.", I warned the device, giving it an accompanying gesture with my right hand, pointer finger outstretched - I hadn't forgotten the treatment given to me by the reception terminal. Then I fished for my hacking device, in case we needed it to do some 'convincing'.
09 Jul 2024, 4:51pm
As I strutted deeper into the lab, far from Kasumi, I could see robotic limbs, intricate wiring, and advanced prosthetics, all meticulously organized but now covered in a thin layer of dust. Workbenches were littered with half-finished projects, their tools abandoned in a hurry when the techs had to make a quick exit.

I sauntered past shelves lined with biomechatronic parts and noticed something odd. A robotic arm twitched slightly, its fingers curling and uncurling like it had a mind of its own. Nearby, a prosthetic leg jerked, its joints creaking in the eerie silence. It was as if the remnants of the lab’s research were trying to come to life, reacting to our presence.

“This place is like a graveyard of forgotten tech.” I muttered.

From the other side of the room, I saw Kasumi had stopped by a device, pulling something out of her pocket.

“Find something interesting?” I called out.
09 Jul 2024, 5:39pm
"Yes.", I answered. "If, this thing turns on. Could be, the main console. Looks, important, anyway."

The thing was roughly at waist height so my hips probably weren't blocking the view to it... too much. It did flicker to life, eventually, after what felt like an eternity. Certainly wasn't like booting up my ship's systems. Wasn't immediately obvious what this gave access to, and I was quickly met with a restriction asking for some kind of ID. So...

"Not, so easy. For you.", I remarked to myself in a low voice, as I plugged the hacking device into a port on the console. It would get in there soon enough. If not into the primary network, this could - probably - at least tell us more about the research done here.
09 Jul 2024, 6:39pm
I sauntered across the room towards Kasumi, making sure to avoid those tables cluttered with prosthetics. As I reached her, I glanced at the screen she was fixated on.

“I’ve got a hunch that the terrorist took a completely different route. I’d bet my last credit that we’ll find those Helix containers near a cargo bay, if they’re still here. Logistically, it makes the most sense. Hopefully, this access point will finally give us a layout of the station…”
09 Jul 2024, 10:11pm
"Well, if, it does... it should, soon."

Right as I finished that sentence, the whole thing unlocked.

"Oh. I guess, now. Shall, we?"

I made a bit of space next to it by stepping aside. At least, sometimes, I was aware of the spatial requirements of my form. Or rather remembered to be aware of them.
10 Jul 2024, 10:51am
“Let’s see…”

I threw a glance at the screen, my fingers tapping impatiently on the console. This was no ordinary system; it was a high-ranking hub where the lab’s data converged.

“Looks interesting… definitely not just a simple terminal. This baby’s hooked into the internal data network. Even if we can’t get a map of the station, you should be able to hack deeper into it.”

I navigated through shift schedules, orders, scientific data, and project meetings. Personal entries from a doctor also popped up.

Log Entry: 27.06.3304
Location: Biomechatronics Engineering Lab, Janus Medical Research Centre
Lead Researcher: Dr. Elena Vasquez
Time: 23:37

Today we initiated the first round of neural interface tests. Dr. Patel ensured all sensors were functioning correctly, while Engineer Ivanov checked the mechanical components of the prosthetic limbs. Dr. Ling prepared the test subjects, ensuring they were comfortable and ready for the experiments. The subjects were asked to perform a series of movements using the prosthetic limbs. Data was collected on the precision and response time of the neural signals.

Early results showed a promising 15% increase in signal clarity compared to earlier models, which should enhance the precision of prosthetic limb movements. We also began preliminary tests on the new bio-compatible materials for the interface, which have shown promising results in terms of durability and integration with human tissue.

Representatives from Azimuth Biotech, including Dr. Hothis, visited the lab to observe the research progress. Azimuth Biotech is considering investing in the project to accelerate the development of these advanced prosthetics. Dr. Hothis expressed keen interest in the neural interface technology and discussed potential collaboration opportunities with Dr. Fischer.

This news has caused quite a stir among the team. While some were optimistic about the potential for increased funding and resources, others were concerned about the possible shift in research priorities and goals. During our afternoon briefing, after a thorough discussion, the decision was made to deny Azimuth Biotech’s involvement in our project. We felt it was crucial to maintain our independence and focus on our mission without external pressures, and make this technology available to everyone.

Later in the evening, I've been informed that a mysterious malfunction occurred on the station, significantly reducing its long-range detection and missile defense capabilities. The cause of the malfunction is currently unknown, and an investigation is underway. This incident has raised concerns about the security and safety of our operations.

Personal Note: As the lead researcher, I am committed to maintaining the integrity and focus of our work. While the involvement of Azimuth Biotech could have brought about significant resources, I believe it was the right decision to prioritize our mission. The recent malfunction is troubling, and I will be closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety and success of our team and our research.

End of Log Entry
10 Jul 2024, 12:48pm
"So... this, is, where that... neural, thingy, came from.", I remarked, in reference to whatever it was again that that Azimuth woman had made.

That was all I had to say to it, anyway. I swiped the log aside and continued looking around, digging through more project information, which I left on the display, to my left, if my companion's curiosity was piqued by them as I looked for the map. As soon as I had it, I'd flash it up - if there was one.
10 Jul 2024, 6:10pm
“Well, well, well… they didn’t want Azimuth involved, and wouldn’t you know it, that very night there was a strange malfunction that crippled their defenses. And the next day, your rebel buddies show up and rain down a barrage of missiles… what a coincidence. Looks to me like someone wanted them out of the picture.”

I watched Kasumi for a while as she navigated through the data, her fingers dancing over the console.

“Hold up… I think I just saw a map… And look here… with a bit of luck, this might still be valid.”

Reminder: Cargo Bay Code Change
Date: 27.03.3304

This is a reminder that the access code for the cargo bay has been changed as part of our routine security update.

New Code: A7d9X2kL3Q
Next Scheduled Code Change: 27.09.3304

Please ensure you use the new code for all future access. If you encounter any issues or have not received the new code, contact the security department immediately.
10 Jul 2024, 6:46pm
"Better, download that code. Or, note down. That, is not something, you will remember."

I 'pinned' that text file on the display and then swiped back to the map, showing it as a 3D holo-display. This one definitely provided a lot more information on the facility itself.

"There. Your, map. So... you, think, we might, find a thing, in the cargo bay?"

I tapped on the display to highlight it... and a path to it. Or the best one that the system could find that looked 'safe', because there were quite a few unstable or damaged sections highlighted in yellow and orange respectively, with outright destroyed ones in red. I could do without a space 'walk' right now. Seemed there were a few additional options for this map, though.

"Hm ..."

I toggled a few of them - namely, automated, internal security emplacements, some of which appeared to remain active, where the command center was, and section names.

"Helpful... I, guess. Could, be worth, going to command, too. Turn those, things, off." I pointed at the defense emplacements on the map. "And, I guess, those mines too... maybe."
10 Jul 2024, 8:42pm
“The Helix could be anywhere, really. But with so many tons of the stuff, don’t you think it’s go to be somewhere near where the cargo ships dock? I mean, I can’t imagine it’s spread all over the station; this place is more of a storage hub than a target where you'd spread your stuff strategically…”

I followed Kasumi’s advice and downloaded the code for the cargo bay, just in case it came in handy.

“This installation is massive… and the command center and cargo bay are practically on opposite ends. I was really hoping to avoid the command center… I bet it’s heavily guarded, especially with the history of the uprising on the station. Wouldn’t be surprised if we ran into several internal security turrets in that general area. Plus, we would need to make our way through some of the most damaged sections.”

I still remembered that sneaky turret near the elevator all too well.

“But I got to admit, I have no clue about these mines. They were laid after the station was already wrecked, that much we know. Do you think they’re actually managed from the command center?”
10 Jul 2024, 9:39pm
I shrugged.

"Don't, know. I, would have, used, existing systems. But, could, also, not be."

Giving it a bit more of a thought, I came to the conclusion the command center wasn't all that worth it unless we needed or wanted something, like shipping logs, or sensor logs recording departures and arrivals, from there - if the Helix stuff wasn't here any longer. Someone took their security quite seriously, though, because I didn't see any way to hack into the servers handling the command center operations, from this node in the network.

"Just, head, for cargo. See, what is there. For, the mines... we can, just shoot, on the way out. As, there is, nobody watching. Not, on, the station... anyway. And, sure, maybe Azimuth, did, sabotage it. But, can't feel, too much, for these people. Not, with those experiments."

I was just about ready to unplug from the console and move along, but I did download the map. Just in case we needed the reference.
