Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

The situation was enough to drive anyone mad. We were practically guaranteed an appointment in Palin’s office, and then I had this blasted problem with the relics.

I paced back and forth, my mind racing. My companion was clueless, but at least she was a decent hacker…

“Hey, how come everyone can connect to the trade computer? Couldn’t we hack in through that connection? I just want access to the cargo database, not critical systems like weapons or power supply.”

Hope dies last, as they say.

“Or maybe you can go into that office and get him to the Clipper? Sooner or later he would have to go there anyway for the engineering.“
24 Jul 2024, 9:54pm
“… do, you, even need, to be in the office? Could, just… wait. Surely, it would be enough, for the work.”

Maybe I was wrong in that assumption, but it didn’t seem too far-fetched.

“And, if he knows, you, as, you say… well …”

I just left the implication there. Most of these engineer types said they didn’t have favorites, but I really doubted that. Because they were still humans, in the end.

“Back then, the Federation had a capital ship parked right near his facility in Maia, blasting anyone who dared to get close. A few independent pilots managed to slip through the blockade, and I was one of them. That was ages ago. But I figured dropping that little nugget might just tip the odds in our favor.”

I thought about what my companion had said regarding a meeting in the office.

“For the job, he’d have to come to the Clipper, naturally. But the plan was getting to a computer with access to the internal network.”

It wasn't the best plan, but at least it was a plan. I would be the last person to deny that it had his weaknesses. I was just thinking about what other alternatives there were for us when one of the two workers who had been carrying the crate returned and headed straight for me.
25 Jul 2024, 9:39am
“Oh. Well. So.”

Of course, I’d noticed the worker approaching at the edge of my vision, but decided to ignore them, for now, while they were outside of hearing distance.

“I, have been… thinking. This, Helix, rubbish, it shares a name, with… some kind of, drug. They, would call it, Onionhead. Or, at, least… around, the time. Three years ago… when they, introduced it. Tried to, hide it, as something else, and… called it, Helix. So… maybe… got the cargo in, like that? Making it look, like something else.”

That idea didn’t really solve the current and more immediate predicament, and I wasn’t particularly sure why anyone from around this base would have accepted drugs - albeit with, apparently, medical applications - to be delivered. Nevermind fifty tons of it. But it wasn’t the most far-fetched theory, either.

The worker who had previously carried the crate of unclassified relics with his colleague finally came to us and spoke to me with a worried look on his face.

“Hey, are you feeling any better?” he asked, his voice filled with genuine concern. “We noticed you weren’t doing too well when we passed by with that crate.”

I nodded slowly, appreciating his concern. “I'm fine, thanks.”

The worker sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “We delivered it to Professor Palin’s office. Bumped into him while we were there. He seemed pretty intrigued by the relics. So we took the opportunity to ask him if we could also get sick from handling this stuff.”

My eyes widened. “And what did he say?”

“He didn’t seem too worried about it,” the worker replied. “But he was very interested in meeting you after I told him about your reaction. He wants to understand more about what happened and asked us to have that crate removed again so you could meet.”

Meeting Professor Palin could be enlightening, but the thought of discussing my sudden illness was a bit daunting.

“I’m not really comfortable talking about what happened,” I admitted and glanced at my companion. “But… I am interested in meeting Professor Palin.”

The worker nodded understandingly. “I get it. But if it helps, Professor Palin is really approachable. And he’s got some amazing tech in his office. You might find it worthwhile.”

My eyes lit up at the mention of the tech. “He has some very advanced computers, right?”

“Yeah, some of the best,” the worker confirmed with a smile. “Maybe meeting him could be a good opportunity for you.”

I took a deep breath. “Alright, I’ll give it a try. Thanks for checking on me.”

“No problem,” the worker said, giving me a reassuring nod before heading back upstairs.

When he was out of earshot, I turned to my companion. "I don't really want to be anyone's lab rat, but this could be the opportunity we've been hoping for. And this onion thing you mentioned sounds interesting too. We should keep that in mind."
25 Jul 2024, 2:04pm
“Fine. You… go, ahead. I, will… wait outside. Unless, you… need, me.”

I glanced after the leaving worker. Considering I’d been facing my companion, he would have gotten pretty much the best look at how “thick” and meaty my thighs were, from the side. Not to mention the backside, which had ‘suffered’ an additional enlargement after everything was done getting larger, making it stick out… even more.

It was really just my body not making me want to waltz in there. I’d just be a distraction, didn’t have anything worthwhile to say, and didn’t really want to be in there anyway.
25 Jul 2024, 2:57pm
Few after the worker left, my datapad beeped with a new notification. I glanced at the screen and saw an invitation from Professor Palin himself. The message was brief but polite.

Dear Haraldsen,

I hope you’re doing well. I recently heard about your experience and your reaction when the crate of unclassified relics was brought past you. I’m very interested in learning more about what happened and would appreciate the chance to discuss it with you in person.

I’d like to invite you to my office at your earliest convenience. Rest assured, we will ensure your comfort and safety during our discussion.

Please let me know a suitable time for you to visit.

Best regards,
Ishmael Palin

"Alright. Let's go then, before I change my mind. And can you please hand me one of the gizmos that allow you to connect remotely?"

I positively replied to the invitation on my datapad, adding that I’d come immediately. I then put the datapad in my backpack and took it with me as I went to the staircase, following the signs that led to his office.

“Ok, fine.”

I followed along to the office, but stopped there.

“Go… ahead. I, will wait, here. Call, if, you need…”

I found myself a clear seating spot that wasn’t quite in view if the foor was open, perfectly happy to just wait nearby, for the diplomacy to be run… and I was a little dubious about the person I’d spent my time with again. Not because of the pirate background, but more the matter of that relic reaction.
25 Jul 2024, 3:36pm
Upon arriving at the office, I knocked and entered to find Palin waiting for me. His office was spacious and meticulously organized, with large windows that allowed plenty of natural light to flood in. One wall was lined with shelves filled with research papers and various artifacts from his travels. A large wooden desk, cluttered with documents, a computer, and several personal items, dominated the center of the room. Near the windows, a comfortable seating area with plush chairs and a coffee table provided a perfect spot for informal meetings.

After exchanging greetings, we sat and began discussing my reaction to the crates. As we talked, I carefully observed the room, looking for the right moment and place to attach the gizmo Kasumi had given me. One wall was adorned with framed certificates and photos of Palin’s achievements, while another was lined with cabinets housing expensive-looking computers, some of which were prototypes I had never seen before. These computers were certainly connected to the internal network and seemed like the ideal spot.

During a particularly engaging part of our conversation, when Palin was deeply focused on explaining something while standing and walking to his wooden desk, I discreetly placed the tiny gizmo near one of his computers. Kasumi would now be able to remotely connect and gather the information we needed while Professor Palin and I continued our discussion. I fervently hoped that my companion would find out something about Cassia's Cobra MkIV, which must have landed here some years ago. With any luck we would find out which bay it had landed in, and with even more luck we might find out what the cargo had been declared as.
25 Jul 2024, 4:16pm
My wrist computer lit up and vibrated, and I checked it as if looking at a message, then just toying further with it to pass the time, when in reality I was poking the insides of the base’s computer systems - figuratively. But to other onlookers, I’d look perfectly innocent… they were also probably more distracted staring at my disproportionate body than to check what I was actually doing, anyway.

I kept my search limited to cargo manifests. Specifically, Cobra MKIV, offloading 50 tons of cargo, from a period of beginning 3307 to end of 3308, just to be safe. I got only a few results, none of which were listed to a “Cassia”, of course, but it would narrow down the search fairly significantly anyhow. We were just lucky that the ship was neither particularly common nor popular compared to the “Jameson Cobra”. Who everyone of course celebrated as the great war hero, not realizing that INRA had sent him on a one-way trip to hide their shady bullshit and attempt to exterminate the Thargoids… and that the great Jameson did not see himself as a hero at all.

But I shooed that thought away for later. Instead, I checked the detailed manifests, more importantly the dates. Yet I couldn’t for the life of me remember which timeframe to look for specifically… though EDI - my AI - decided to be helpful in that moment, and highlighted one from early in 3308, around February. That had to be the one.

Now I just needed to wait for that woman to come out of the office again, rather than get caught up in a big chat with the professor.
25 Jul 2024, 5:18pm
The conversation dragged on for what felt like ages, and then there was a blood test. Palin had to step out of his office for a moment to get it done. Perfect chance for me to snatch that little gizmo back. I just hoped there weren’t any surveillance cameras in the office, but I hadn’t spotted any so far. My gut told me that the grunts were more likely to be watched than their bosses, who rarely tolerated cameras in their sanctuaries.

I then picked up an interesting tidbit: despite their obvious differences, guardians and humans didn’t differ in their blood. Palin mentioned that Ram Tah was the real expert on the subject and said the latter speculated that the two species might be related.

I bid my polite farewells and slipped out of the office, heading straight for my companion. A burning question was already on my lips.

“So? Did you find out anything?”
25 Jul 2024, 5:23pm
“Yes. Look, here.”

I presented the cargo manifest list which I had found, and the specific entry from around February, which now had come back to me as being roughly the time where that second log of the terrorist nutjob had made.

“Seems, we have, our stuff.”

‘Stuff’ probably wasn’t the best word to use in that context, but it was the only one that really came to my brain then, without thinking for an excessively long time. And it wouldn’t necessarily attract any suspicion.
25 Jul 2024, 5:35pm
“Mhm. I didn't really expect the name Cassia to pop up, and this looks pretty convincing. Ship type, timeframe, and cargo size all match up. It’s not just a rare ship, but also an unusual configuration – you’d typically see less cargo capacity. ”

I paused for a moment, handing the gizmo back to Kasumi.

“What did it say about the landing bay? The storage will definitely be near that area.”
25 Jul 2024, 5:40pm
“Uh …”

I scratched my head, and reviewed the data.

“Says… something, about, getting put into, storage. I think. Should, not… be too, difficult. We, know, where small pads, are arranged.”

That was one benefit of this circular port layout - rather than ‘lines’ of docking bays with the various pad sized scattered around in a way only the flight controllers and maintenance crews would remember, everything was nearly arranged in that circle with the small pads, then the medium and large ones, in order, nothing mixed inbetween. The data probably also said exactly which bay the ship had been docked at and stored from, though I hadn’t seen it myself, yet.
25 Jul 2024, 9:36pm
"Alright," I said, turning to my companion. "Let’s head to the small pads and look for the storage. Surely there's some kind of management system there where we might be able to find out more, once we figure out which pad is the correct one."

We made our way through the bustling base, the hum of activity all around us. The circular structure made navigation easy, and soon we were standing in front of a large window through which the small pads were visible.

"Is there any kind of identifier in the cargo manifest that you found? With that information, we could go down to the basement and walk to the pad in question."
