Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

“The date checks out, I remember that much. But how it’s all set up technically… could be a subroutine in the ship’s computer that kicks in based on the date?”

Well, whatever the trigger was, I was confident we’d figure it out. I made my way to the cockpit, keeping an eye out for any traps. I could easily imagine this area being secured again. But in the end, there was nothing waiting for us, and soon enough, I was standing in front of the input panel of the locked cockpit door.

“Looks like a job for your magic key,” I said to my companion, a smirk playing on my lips. “Let’s get this thing open and see what secrets it’s hiding,” I added while glancing at my companion, ready for whatever came next.
01 Aug 2024, 3:22pm
"Of, course... always, something locked, to keep, me, out. So I don't, knock stuff, over."

I fished the magic tool out, theatrically waved it around with the hand on one end, like a magic wand, before attaching it to the panel. Now to wait, and see if any more dumb riddles awaited us.
01 Aug 2024, 4:28pm
It took a while, but the magic key finally did its job and cracked the code for the door, which then opened automatically.

Inside, the cockpit windows were covered with a privacy screen, so no light was coming in from outside. But that wasn’t much of a problem, because as soon as the door opened, the cockpit lights blazed on, almost blinding us since we had gotten used to the dim light in the rest of the ship. It took a moment for my eyes to adjust and make out anything in the two-person cockpit. But then, the realization hit me like a sledgehammer.

Someone was sitting in the copilot’s seat!

To be precise, it was the mummified corpse of a woman, partially unclothed as bare legs and arms were visible, while the rest of the body, including the head, was covered by a reddish suit draped over her like a blanket. The shape of the suit and its colors reminded me of the clothes on the picture of Cassia and her sister that we had recently discovered in the Janus Research Centre.

"Bloody hell," I cursed, completely surprised by this unexpected sight.

I placed my hands on my hips again, just because… I didn’t really know what to do with the sight. But, somehow, had a feeling this was not ‘our’ terrorist. Yet, whoever it was… I couldn’t tell, not without a closer look. And I also entertained the possibility of it being a ruse or other trap… but my companion had gotten ‘stuck’ in the doorway at the sight.

“Could, you… move, ahead, a little, please? You, are… blocking.”

Of course, the problem actually was that I was too big - and wide - to slip past her, but I conveniently ignored that in the moment.
01 Aug 2024, 5:01pm
It took a moment and a nudge from my companion before I finally stepped into the cockpit to clear the entrance. I was extra careful not to get too close to the mummified corpse. Not that I expected her to jump up or anything - she looked very dead - but I wanted to avoid bumping into her and breaking off a piece. I made my way to the pilot’s seat, taking in the cockpit as I went.

Apart from the room lighting, there was no other light source, which probably meant the computer and all other instruments were on standby. Not a single indicator light was on. Next, I took a closer look at the corpse.

As far as I could tell, she was a tall, slender woman with long hair. Something was off about the outside of her left hand - maybe a spot or some kind of tattoo. That would need a closer look.

“The lady’s been dead for a while,” I said to my companion. “I’m not a hundred percent sure, but I don’t think she’s our terrorist. I’d rather bet Cassia was the one who covered her up.”
01 Aug 2024, 5:13pm
“May, be. But, why, leave here?”

I gestured at the body. Because this was an odd place to leave a dead person.

“Maybe, something- on, the computer… will, tell us. For, now, I would, not… touch, it. Remember, what happened, with the last, one.”
01 Aug 2024, 5:32pm
“You don’t need to remind me, the whole grenade-under-the-body thing is still fresh in my mind,” I retorted.

“Maybe she’s an accomplice? Seems like a strange place for a corpse as you say, but then again, no one’s been in here for ages. Dragging a body through the station would’ve drawn more attention.”

The ship’s computer was still in standby mode. We’d have to power it up, hoping to gather more intel to stop the spread of Helix before it could start. But I had a bad feeling about it.

“What if the ship’s computer is the real trap, and turning it on sets something off?” I asked.
01 Aug 2024, 5:36pm
“So, what, else, could we… do? Either, we look, at, it, or, the… body.”

I looked at it again, with an idea in mind.

“If, it has, biometric lock… but, not, the most… pleasant, thing, to do.”

That was probably an understatement - but if it was the only way to get into the ship’s systems without setting off some kind of trap, or the Helix ‘bomb’, I didn’t really see any way around it.
01 Aug 2024, 10:01pm
“You're probably thinking what I’m thinking… But does biometric recognition even work on a mummified corpse? Voice recognition is definitely out of the question,” I stated dryly.

I went to the body and carefully removed the red clothing that partially covered it. Pretty was definitely something else.

“Well, aren’t you a sight for sore eyes,” I muttered, my eyes narrowing as I took in the desiccated features. “You know, if you were alive, you’d probably have a lot to say about this mess,” I said, shaking my head. “But alas, here we are, and I’m left to clean up the pieces.”

Then I took a closer look at the left hand, on the outside of which I had previously noticed a dark shadow or mark. On closer inspection, this turned out to be a tattoo in black color which depicted a Thor rune.

I straightened up, my mind already racing with the next steps.

“Time to get to work, I guess.”
01 Aug 2024, 10:13pm
“Hm …”

I inspected the marking a little more closely.

“Wait, a minute. What, is, that symbol? Do not, recognize, it. But, seems… important, somehow. And, do, you want, to power things, on?”
01 Aug 2024, 11:47pm
“Well, didn’t you say what else can we do but take a look at the computer or the body? And then you mentioned biometrics… so I thought I’d take a peek at the corpse to see what our options are.”

I paused for a moment, my mind racing.

“I’m not sure if we can work with biometrics given the state of this body. More likely, it’ll come down to another hack. Either way, I don’t see any other option but to fire up the onboard computer.”

I pointed at the corpse, specifically at the outside of the left hand.

“That’s a Thor rune, an ancient symbol. It represents protection and defense. I’m going to speculate wildly here: the containers had a Thor Biometrics logo - and now a Thor tattoo shows up here. I don’t think this is a coincidence; maybe the woman worked for the company.”

“Perhaps. Maybe, then… that, is why, she, was… killed. But, then, why… dress, her up. Or, cover, the body.”

I thought about it some more, unable to get the matter off my mind.

“Maybe… not, an, employee… but… test subject? An, employee, would… really, not, need, a marking.”

That didn’t explain why the woman was dead, but this was definitely no coincidence. How she would have gotten here, though, that was beyond me… and the only way to know, in the absence of the ship’s owner, was to get into the computer, so I moved to the nearby control console in the wall, trying to make as much use of the space in the Cobra’s cockpit as possible - which was not easy - getting things powered on. Then I plugged in my hacking tool, with it set to the ‘extra sensitive’ mode in which it really paid attention to security measures and possible traps in the system.

I only hoped that would be enough to avoid setting off any possible failsafes and putting us under time pressure to stop the Helix contraption from getting set off.
02 Aug 2024, 12:56pm
“Maybe part of the answer lies in the clothing? The corpse is only in skivvies, and that red outfit, which screams Cassia and her sister’s uniforms, was tossed over like a makeshift blanket. What if those were Cassia's clothes and our terrorist changed?"

I could only guess, but if Cassia had landed here with the ship, she had somehow left the place without it. Maybe this was the body of another ship’s pilot. As for the tattoo - maybe my partner was right, and it was a test mark, or maybe something personal or religious. Every guess was as good as the next. We’d probably never know the truth.

I watched as Kasumi fired up the ship’s computer and hooked up her hacking tool, following the events with bated breath. The console screen flickered to life, revealing a chaotic jumble of encrypted files and fragmented logs. Among the mess, a series of messages began to play loud and clear in the cockpit, the voice chilling, contemplating and unhinged at the same time. Each message left a lingering sense of dread, the pauses amplifying the psychotic yet functional nature of the speaker.
Message 1: "To whoever hears this… if you’re hearing this, it means you’ve managed to hack into my ship. Congratulations. But don’t get too comfortable. There’s a timer. You won’t see it, but it’s there. Counting down to the moment of reckoning. This vessel is rigged to spread a message, and only I know the disarm code. Tick-tock, my friend."

Message 2: "Until now, these ships that appear on dying worlds or worlds in great crisis were just a rumour. But then I saw one with my own eyes, an Azimuth ship called 'Exodus'. I was there when they landed and loaded the eligible people in groups of 300 into cryo-capsules. I heard the loudspeaker announcements that stowaways would be executed on the spot. I knew they'd come for me eventually. But I didn't expect someone from Thor Biometrics, a seemingly insignificant company, to do the dirty work for them. She didn't reveal much, despite her pain... was probably even more afraid of her employers than of me. Only said one word: Consortium. Whatever that means."

Message 3: "The galaxy's so-called 'peacekeepers' who pull the strings behind the scene can't stand a mind that thinks differently, they're all about order, hierarchy and continuity. They'll never understand the necessity of perpetual change, of revolution. These people don't understand me. They would have understood my sisters even less, who saw Darwinism, the struggle for survival, as the one principle of life - as the basis for literally everything, including a society."

Message 4: "Tick-tock, tick-tock… the clock is ticking. Can you hear it? The sound of change... or maybe it’s just the sound of my laughter, echoing through the void. Either way, your time is running out."

As the last message faded away, my eyes fell on the screen of the on-board computer.
Warning: Unauthorized access detected

...erasing system memory.... failed.

“Well, ain’t this a fine mess! We should’ve destroyed that sentry gun instead of just cutting the power. Now we’re stuck in the cockpit! The only good news is that your hacking tool has prevented the on-board computer from going into nirvana.”
02 Aug 2024, 1:11pm
“Well, maybe, not. We are, in, the system. And, it is, not purged. So, we, can use it, to help us. Just… need, to know, where to look.”

Obviously, I didn’t know where, but I wasn’t alone, at least. Part of me kind of figured it would end up coming down to this, not that it made it more ideal.

“So… any, ideas? Perhaps, there is, also, some weapon… left, onboard.”

That would only solve the problem of the sentry, of course, and if I couldn’t disable it again. The contraption in the cargo hold waiting to go off was the priority. But just tearing it apart was not really feasible, and risked exposing us to the contents, as well. So no point in that. Self-destruct… also not an option, because it would be a little too likely to cause unwanted collateral damage, and not guarantee all of the Helix to be destroyed.

“Maybe, we focus, on- getting out, later. And, first, that.” I pointed to my left and down, somewhere toward the cargo hold. “If, not disarmed, would kill, us, anyway.”
02 Aug 2024, 3:45pm
“Mhm. Could be there’s a weapon here in the cockpit. Maybe we should really look for it, once we’ve dealt with the more pressing issue in the cargo hold, like you so nicely pointed out.”

Taking a deep breath, I slid into the pilot’s seat and activated the main console, which, thanks to my companion’s hacking tool, was still operational. My fingers flew over the touch screen, navigating through the ship’s systems. I accessed the security protocols, hoping to find something about the device in the cargo hold.

“Maybe we’ll find something in the security logs; they record all ongoing processes in the system,” I muttered, my eyes scanning the lines of text. A couple of minutes later, I was none the wiser. Nothing seemed to address the device in the cargo bay, and there was simply way too much text.

“We need to speed this up… Could you maybe use your hacking tool to search for entries that include the term ‘override’ to find anything that was irregularly added to the ship’s system, anything that does not have the manufacturer's signature?”

I hoped to reduce the endless amount of information to a manageable level. Since the pump was hooked up to the power grid somewhere, and there was something that triggered it at a certain date, there had to be a clue about a custom process controlling the whole thing.
