Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Creamy Goodness III "Also, I am taking from Ninette all its duties for Creamy, making a new blank PA program. His Ninette is safe, but its descendants are new, benefitting from Ninettes, growth that is if you want one, naturellement. The more programs out there being used, the more we learn how sentient machines emerge, and most importantly, how to spot them before it happenes"

“No thank you, Doctor. I’ll pass on the next generation Ninette,” said Vasil while scrolling through the massive amount of information being fed to his data pad, looking specifically for the last time Ninette had contact with Creamy. “I already have a quirky, thirty-year-old COVAS that sometimes acts like it has a mind of its own. I don’t need it arguing with an overlay or developing a split personality.”

“There,” he said finding what he was looking for. Glancing at incidents before and after the last contact, it did not appear as if Creamy had a pleasant stay with Vengerfield’s crew.

“It looks like his Sovreign Shield transponder was removed and then he was transferred to another ship, the Ophois. No more contacts with him after that. The Ophois, along with the Anansi and Nila was one of the pirate carriers at the battle above Summerland 1b. It was there that I got Ninette from the captain of the Anansi.”

He saw, too, that it was apparently Vodan who removed Ninette from the Knight of Goodness shortly after Creamy was transferred. Maybe there were clues somewhere in later logs as to why the pirate had kept Ninette for so long, but the major finding was that Creamy was still alive when moved from the Verum Libertas to the Ophois.

“I’m sure the Long Road still has records of all the transponders it encountered at the battle.” He looked to Willow. “If we can recover its signature, do you think you can find out where the Ophois currently is? I doubt we’ll be lucky enough to discover Goodness is still aboard, but if Maul can get the malware Oceane into the Ophois’ systems, maybe we can determine what happened to Goodness.”

"If you can give me a wake scan, I can track it. So, being used as a pirates base, I guess it'll like, it'll cover its digital tracks, right?" Willow directed that question to Maul. "But it can't hide its wake. FSDs are as individual as finger prints, you know? And carriers leave a huge mess behind"

"So the Summerland thing wasn't that long ago, yeah?" she asked turning back to Vasil "If you don't have a clean wake scan of the Office, um what ever you called it, like, maybe I can find enough jump wash at Summerland to build an FSD profile. But like, that'll take ages. I mean, between me and Em, we'll come up with something. Carriers are real east to find, you know?"

Willow closed the info Séraphine had sent, and flicked over to fleet management.

"Let me get the Barb sent here, she's got great sensors, and all the software I'll need. And professor" said Willow somewhat timidly talking to Séraphine "This AI thing, will it be like, all French and like female?"

"I've still got full access to the Anansi's logs as well. If the Ophois comes within range of it again, we'll know exactly where its at." He said while tapping at his data slate. "I'll see what else I can dig up from the Anansi. There might be a pattern in the methods they use to cover their tracks."
Willow Thorn"Let me get the Barb sent here, she's got great sensors, and all the software I'll need. And professor" said Willow somewhat timidly talking to Séraphine "This AI thing, will it be like, all French and like female?"

Maul stopped what he was doing to listen to the exchange. While he was very passionate about the ever evolving tech landscape, he found himself agreeing with Vasil about the new version of Ninette, It would never replace the COVAS in a ship he'd use personally but if he could learn more by studying all of it's intricacies, he may be able to learn and improve upon his own projects.

"You dislike French women, Corbeau?" asked Séraphine. "Maybe you think we have hairy armpits, and smoke to much, yes?"

Séraphine dramatically sagged and clasped her heart. The image was supported by a few pairs of robot limbs copying her motions.

"No no, it will be, ah, like any voice activated assistant" she said dropping the act "You can give it whatever voice you like, in any language. Only in time it will learn from you, and become helpful to you. It will also periodically send to me it's data, so I can see its progression, but only its core program, noting else. Creamy's Ninette was a special exception"

"Now, it seems you have a stratégie, no? If I can be of no more use? I'll put Creamy's Ninette on a better covas.." She didn't say it, but the words in case you find him alive, burned bright in their absence "Bien, take it with you, yes?"

Kasumi Goto“Lot, of work, to… put on, armor, alone. There. Help, maybe?”

It would make things faster. I wouldn’t judge if I was told it was not to be, though, and stood up myself, waiting to see the response.

“Let's do this quickly so we don't lose too much time... remember that the megaship with the transporter we're looking for could arrive at any moment.”

I briefly considered the particular challenge of putting on the armor and came to the conclusion that the low gravity made it difficult to keep the armor plates in place.

“I'll help you put on the armor. I can hold the armor plates for you.”
29 Aug 2024, 7:26pm
“I don’t have any wake scans, Willow, but there were five carriers entering and leaving the battle, all fighting within range of each other’s defensive turrets. On top of it all there were what can only be described as capitol ship interdictor fields in use. So, there might not be just FSD wash, but a FSD tsunami left behind.”

“The remnants of the Destinies Jester might still be there as well, but anything of value has probably already been salvaged from the hulk.”

It then occurred to him that there were others who could have wake scans. “One of Maul’s friends had several fighters committed to the battle and one of them may have scanned the wake. Perhaps someone might persuade her to give up contact info for them. Not me, though. She seems the type to hold very long grudges.”

The IISS was also involved in the battle and Vasil was certain they had gathered the necessary wake information. However, approaching the IISS might cause them to ask more questions than they answered. Every Imperial knew that you did not want to be the target of IISS questioning, which was not something he wished Willow or Maul to experience.

“Thank you for your time, Doctor.” Vasil tucked his small pad back into a suit pocket and stood. “We’ll be sure keep you informed of any progress.” He suspected she might want to know, even though she had not asked. For all of the Doctor’s assertions that Ninette and Creamy were professional interests, Vasil suspected the extra assistance built into Creamy’s Ninette was driven by more than just AI research.

“I'll help you put on the armor. I can hold the armor plates for you.”

"Ok... then, follow."

I walked past the other woman and over toward my personal cabin, where I'd just left - dumped - my gear after yesterday's exciting, and tiring, adventures. While I usually left them in the armory, otherwise... but I had been really badly tired, and it saved us a bit of time walking there in the ship now.

First, I went through the probably quite entertaining - to an external observer - struggle of getting out of the Artemis suit and into a Dominator, though I'd had the latter modified to basically look the same, while retaining the unique characteristics of the combat-focused suit, then put the armor pieces that were easy to fit on - leg protection, up to the knee, plus arm guards and shoulder pads. Only following that did I fish the chest armor, which was quite curved at the front, out, and held it toward my companion.

"Locks, around waist. And, above shoulders. Fingers away from the sensitive, please."

It was less of a requirement and more of a request to try avoiding contact with the big soft bits on my chest... because I very much knew myself that it could be difficult to avoid those things with a hand, while fiddling around the upper body.
29 Aug 2024, 9:36pm
“Not so easy to avoid contact with something that deserves its own ID in terms of size and could have its own gravitational pull,” I joked. “But I will do my best.”

I took the chest armor, which thanks to the almost missing gravity was at least light as a feather, and tried to position it. Although I focused as hard as a pilot trainee during the first flight test, the occasional minor collision could not be avoided, mainly armor to body contact though, until I got it right.

As I tried to lock the shoulder pieces in place, the chest armor slipped from my hands and nearly took out a nearby display in her cabin. “Oops, sorry about that! Even the best freighter pilot couldn’t land this without a collision,” I said, laughing nervously.

After a few more attempts, including one where I almost slammed the damn curved thing into my face, I finally got them to lock in place. “There we go! Perfect fit… more or less,” I said, wiping imaginary sweat from my brow.

“Now, let’s just hope it doesn’t come with a user manual the size of a novel for the rest...”

Somehow, I managed to get the waist part in place, but as I moved to secure it, it decided to tilt away from her body. “Hold still, will you?” I muttered, as if the armor could understand. Then, after a few more adjustments and a bit of fumbling, I finally had everything in place and locked.

“Perfect! All set and secure,” I said. "Are we ready to go to the other ship? What about your weapons?"
29 Aug 2024, 9:51pm
“Oh. Those, are here, too.”

I contemplated the work on the armor for a second before double checking the shoulder straps - solid material, not just leather or some other fabric which could get cut easily - and the locks at waist level. Everything seemed in place, though… not that it hurt to double check, because the mass of my - relatively - new and recent ‘additions’ was easily capable of knocking those connections loose if they were not on properly. Unlike before, where it really was not an issue.

I then went over to a different, more compact locker, out of which I fished my weapons, same ones I’d used yesterday in our… fun little adventure into a derelict facility repurposed by terrorists. I put them on my back and the pistol on its holder on the right thigh. Had the helmet on the desk right nearby, probably would just carry it in one hand while we walked over.

“Now, I am ready. Shall, we? Will follow. Or, maybe, I could get holo-thingy. So your people, do not stare… as much, maybe.”

“The holo-thing? I’ll leave that entirely up to you. Do it however feels best for you.”

I left her private cabin and went back into the cockpit. My helmet was perched on the edge of a console, right where I’d left it to help my companion with her armor. It sat there, slightly tilted, with the visor reflecting the soft glow of the control panel lights. I picked it up again, the weight of the helmet feeling familiar and reassuring in my hands - a calming contrast to the way I felt while helping with the chest plate of her armor.

“Once you’ve made up your mind, we can get going. The Gullveig’s hangar isn’t far.”
30 Aug 2024, 11:58am
“Ok.”

Wasn’t totally sure if my companion heard that response, but it wasn’t that important anyway. I looked around a bit, thinking, and… then just decided to leave the holo-disguise where it was. The chances of me being around this carrier in the future again were… quite high, so maybe it was best to get them used to these curves rather than hide it.

Or, at least, make them aware that I was so big and round. I picked up my helmet and walked into the cockpit, signalling I was all set.

“Am, ready. Let’s go. If… you would.”

My left hand pointed outside, arm outstretched.

“Do, try to… not, make, your crew… stare, too much.”

Though it was kind of… unavoidable. Whatever people who saw this figure possibly thought of it, there was only a very slim chance they would not be inclined to throw some more or less subtle gazes at it.
30 Aug 2024, 1:14pm
“Alright. Just follow my lead.”

With my helmet tucked under my arm, I swaggered out of Kasumi’s Phantom’s cockpit, heading towards the airlock. My boots clanked against the metal floor, echoing through the corridor. Finally, I reached the airlock and exited the ship into the hangar where it stood. The hangar was a bustling hive of activity, with equipment of all shapes and sizes being prepped and repaired. I glanced back, making sure my companion was keeping up.

“Hangar 11 is this way,” I said, pointing vaguely towards a door leading to the adjacent hangar.

When we both began to move towards that direction, I noticed a few workers throwing curious glances at my companion’s unusual body, some of them whispering to each other. I turned to them and shouted, “Hey! Stop gawking and get back to work, will you!” They quickly averted their eyes and resumed their tasks.

"Don’t mind them,” I said over my shoulder. “They're just not used to seeing you here yet.”

We continued walking, the hum of machinery and the clatter of tools filling the air. I navigated through the chaos of equipment and personnel, and my companion followed closely behind. A few minutes later, the door to Hangar 11 loomed ahead.
30 Aug 2024, 3:27pm
Of course, those looks were expected, and there were a few more than just from those workers. Directed at the chest, of course, but with it being hidden underneath an interesting looking piece of armor… the more visible lower half was drawing more attention. The teasing half of me wanted to strike a pose, the other, just wander on and ignore the gawkers as much as possible.

Then, the hangar showed up, shielding me from the exterior anyway.

“I hope, nobody made any doors, smaller.”, I jokingly remarked, knowing that airlocks were one of my favorite subjects these days with being designed to take up as little space as possible, thus being just slightly less wide than my body. Its hips, anyway…

“Go, ahead. Probably, will not get stuck, but… better, to be sure.”
30 Aug 2024, 5:24pm
“We can also use the airlock for goods and spare parts, if you prefer,” I suggested, knowing full well that it was a lot bigger than a personnel airlock.

The cargo airlock, designed to handle larger volumes and heavier weights, was perfect for transporting bulky items. However, for reasons of efficiency and safety, these airlocks were not actually used by personnel.
30 Aug 2024, 8:20pm
“No, I… can fit.”

I did contemplate the idea briefly, holding a hand to my chin in the ‘thinking’ position.

“Is, it closer? To, the cockpit. If not, then …”

I pointed at the intended entry point for people. Not being familiar with the layout of a T6, I couldn’t tell which of the two options was faster. And it probably would not save us much time, anyway. Certainly not enough to really make a difference.
