Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Vasil Vasilescu
Like a dead whale, its savaged carcass drifted in space, having been gutted by looter and scavenger sharks for anything valuable. All that remained was scrap being slowly cut away by salvagers, who like crabs, came late to the feast to pick clean the Jester's bones.

Willow let the Python drift up next to the Always Lost. Her ship, Barb was bristeling with dishes, receivers and clusters of expensive, finely tuned equipment for finding the secrets held by the black.

"Woah Vee. Like, you said there was a fight here, but wow, you know? It must have been epic, but, um, it has made a hell of a mess, right?"

Willow sent a visual representation of what she had found; echos of stolen technology that could unpick the fabric of physical space, and force a vessel through the frayed hole. To Willow, the phjysical remains of the battle were not important right now. That had drifted far away from the evidence left behind by FSD's and interdiction signatures.

"So, that's already compensated for star wash, but the red rings there and there" said Willow talking about the circles on the left and right of the image she had sent Vasil. "Um, so ok, like, try to imagine the red rings doing that thing that water dose when you drop something in it"

"So whatever that was, it's really messing with my wake reconstruction tech. Like, star wash and sometimes gravity, if its like black hole gravity, is all I have to deal with. I guess I can still do the job, but like, it'll take a while you know. Maybe days. If we got other avenues to explore, it might be worthwhile. Sorry guys"

Kasumi Goto"Ok. Will, keep it... in mind."

We followed the transporter for quite a while, always on guard against detection, until the ship left the supercruise and entered the asteroid belt, causing us to lose it for a moment.

I switched off the supercruise and guided our ship towards the asteroid belt as well.

“The transport should reappear on our displays in a moment. It always takes a while when a change is involved in or out of the supercruise.”

Our ship now also reached the asteroid belt, almost exactly where the other ship had flown into it before us. I reduced speed slightly and dived in.

“Okay, now it's getting interesting... I'm going to have to concentrate on the asteroids to make sure this ends well. Because without a shield, a collision won't be good at all... You focus on the ship...”

And after a short pause, I added, based on our experience at the Janus Research Medical Centre:

“...and maybe watch out for mines, too.”
05 Sep 2024, 3:44pm
“Uh… o-k. Sure.”

Took a while before that transport popped up on the sensors again, and it was not always a steady contact either. But I did my best to keep track of the sensor blips and get markers placed for them, really hoping that we weren’t just chasing a ghost signal bounced around by the rocks surrounding us. Not enough of them to be a significant collision risk, but sufficient to scatter emissions around and make it harder for a ship to be tracked.

“Asteroid, composition… messing with sensors. Not sure, if mines, will pick up. Better, keep the eye, open.”

The transport appeared to be slowing down, if we were really still following it, so maybe we were going to be there soon.
05 Sep 2024, 4:47pm
"Looks like the ship is slowing down. No signs yet of a station? Would be bad to bump into them only by chance, because once we are that close that we can see them with our naked eye, they see us too..."

I reduced our speed some more to keep a distance.

"Wonder what they established here. Maybe a camp on one of the bigger asteroids? What else could it be?"
05 Sep 2024, 4:53pm
"I... guess. Maybe, on the surface, built into, it."

It seemed likely, a free-floating space installation would have been a lot easier to detect... at least, once close. Yet I was not seeing anything, right now at least.

"Maybe, see, where transport stops. Might tell us, where it is."

Because I certainly wasn't getting any wiser from these sensor readings, just blindly stumbling about. But pointed at the rock in question, they would likely detect the signature of a structure built into it.

When compared to the unadorned hull of the Always Lost, the Barb certainly looked like its namesake with all of the extra equipment added to the hull. Nevermind finding needles in haystacks, Willow could probably determine the needle’s manufacturer, material composition and its exact location in space-time.

“If it takes time, that’s fine.” Vasil believed Creamy was likely dead, mainly because of the company he was in prior to his disappearance, so a few days did not matter to Vasil. “In the meantime, Maul can probably see if there is anything useful to be gained from his connection to the Anansi.”

Vasil studied the info Willow was sending. “I wonder if whatever fancy tricks they use to pre-spool the FSD is jacking up your wake reconstruction.” He did not fully understand the science behind how Willow was reconstructing old wake data, but her water analogy got him thinking. Ripples in the water spread from the source of the disturbance. “This may be irrelevant, but do time-space differences matter? The system has probably traveled a thousand or more light seconds through space since the battle took place. So, right now we are at least as far away from the original jump.”
05 Sep 2024, 6:53pm
Kasumi Goto"Maybe, see, where transport stops. Might tell us, where it is."

"Makes sense. Wait... they are coming to a full stop."

I immediately reduced the speed of our ship to zero, and we came to a halt next to a bigger asteroid that was between them and us, although they were still quite a distance away.

"Wow, look at those readings! That stuff wasn't there before. Looks like someone has woken up Sleeping Beauty..."

From one moment to the next, there were energy signatures that almost went off the scale. Either something big had suddenly been switched on or some kind of shielding had been removed.

“I think that tells us where this station must be... somewhere very close to that ship. It's probably built into one of the rocks there, like the much larger Sagan Research Center.”

I thought for a moment.

“What do you think we should do? I would definitely recommend marking the current position of the transporter so that we can find it again without that ship. Other than that.... we can hardly get any closer at the moment without being discovered ourselves. Should we wait until the transporter has gone?”

First stop - Wilsons Survey HE QIONG SYSTE. to pick up the 'conda':

"Rule one: No food on the flight-deck Richie." As he turned up munching on something.

It was not a promising beginning. Maybe I had been too hasty or informal in choosing a pilot/companion for such a long trip. His qualifications were fine, several months flying courier missions, (didn't we all) and several more hauling cargo. OK it's a big step up in class to pilot a large ship but its just a matter of familiarisation and caution. All he had to do was stay awake. The real reason I'd given him a chance was because he reminded me of another handsome young pilot I had known not so many years ago. We were young and foolish, but we had so much fun together.

Richie was nice enough. Easy-going, made me feel old, but took my advice/instructions reasonably well. Pleasant company and well-read. Not sure yet if we can get along on an extended trip. Kept him company for three jumps, just to let him get the feel of the ship.

Exercising, ten minutes, hot already. Ship alarm calling for attention on the flight deck. Pulled on vest and shorts. Too late. Emergency stop.

"What the heck Richie?" He looked dazed, had a bloody nose. Ship was dangerously overheating, he was ejecting heatsinks.

"Sorry Maam, was dozing nearly hit a planet."

"Rule two: Belt up when alone on the flight deck." Now, clean that mess up, indicating the blood. And don't call me Maam. Descartes is fine. Not Des, not Dee, just Descartes. And stop staring at me.

OK, plot a course for BLEIA EOHN JJ-E . Lets visit a few POI's

"Oh yeah, that like, totally matters, but that a constant right? Predictable. And the software accounts for that"

It was real hard to explain what she was doing to someone that wasn't an astro, or particle physicist. There was a comparison somewhere that would do, but it was hard to find. Her brother had explained it real well when they were learning, so she borrowed his description of wake reconstruction.

"Ok, so you know like, paintings, right? Like, pictures to hang on your wall? So think of one of those, but like, the paint is still wet, ok? And someone comes along and wipes their hand on it. Its ruined right? All smeared, and a mess, yeah? So the painting is like, a ships wake, yeah? And I've got a perfect image of the painting before it was smeared thanks to Séraphine, you get me?"

"Now normally, me and my computer come along to a what's left of a wake, like, way too dissipated for a wake scanner to read. But as long as we know what the signature of the FSD that made the wake should look like, we can undo the smearing, and find out where the ship probably jumped to. Just like a normal wake scanner, but like, with way more steps and some guess work"

"But here, its like 3 or 4 extra shitty fuckheads have come along and deliberately messed with the paint, so its going to take way longer to reconstruct. I've never seen an effect like this, so. Er, well I've never seen it, you know? Its a mess"

"Like, I hope that helps you understand what I'm dealing with, ok?"

Willow’s analogy was short, simple, and easy to understand, the trifecta of requirements for explaining a highly technical process to someone unfamiliar with the science behind it. “Okay, I understand now. Thanks for not bombing me with technospeak. I’m just an old scout and don’t know much, but I know enough to have big brains helping out.”

Vasil closed the image Willow was sending. It had started reminding him of cartoonish eyes sending out glowing hypno rings. The only things missing were wavering theremin music and an over dramatic voice commanding, ‘Obeyyyyy.’

“I’m not surprised things are all messed up. There were two interdictors and at least three carriers capable of FSD spooling, all within a 5km radius. Plus, however many smaller ships there were entering and leaving supercruise. I don’t think your painting was smeared. It was doused in paint thinner and thrown in the washing machine.”

Desumashin's black paint did well in visually hiding the ship amongst the stars and wreckage but its faint heat signature would be noticeable on the scanner of anyone looking hard enough. Maul had idled the ship not too far from the Always Lost and the Barb and was lazily slouched in the pilots seat, scrolling through holo screens as he listened to Vasil and Willow's chat.

"Ya know..." He said, unmuting the comms on his end. "...pardon for butting in here, but I've been looking through these logs from the Anansi. Got a few hits on the Ophois in the contact history but none of their past jump logs and contact history share data. So I don't know what systems they could have met in or when. Which is weird because this shit is usually time stamped but now it ain't. Someone over there seems to have at least taken a few precautions when it comes to having their info swiped. Can't say I'm surprised considering their choice of occupation, eh?"

Maul swiped the holo screen to send images of the data to Willow and Vasil as he continued.

"Say Willow, did that file I shared with y'all say anything about the Ophois average jump range? I know they did some tricky shit with precharging but maybe we can compare some of these locations from the Anansi's jump logs with systems that are within range of here that would also fall within the Ophois' average jump range. That's assuming the Anansi and Ophois were both present in a system together. Not too certain on that point but if they were, maybe we can find a cleaner jump point for you to analyze."

"Lotta what ifs and maybes there but...I mean...what if?"

"Yeah, no problem Em. So your average carrier has like, a 500 ly range, ok? This one has been cooking the pre-charge, so that's got to do damage to the FSD, I'd guess. So lets knock like, 100 ly off that top bar"

It wasn't nessacerry, they got the point already, but Willow was going to be here a long time. Poking some fun wouldn't do any harm.

"Let me do a few calculations here. So, given we are in Imperial space right now, and like, Creamy was transfused to the Off, Ophoheis. Er, the other carrier, waaaay over galactic west about a year ago, and our last known location information is like, a week old, I'd guess it could be..."

She paused knowing the guys knew the answer already, so the punch line would just be rubbing it in.

"Absolutely fucking anywhere. So yeah, you go check out those star systems, I'll stay here. Kay?"

Kasumi GotoThere was a slight hint of uncertainty in my voice. I was really not the right person to ask for this kind of plan making, and had no clue what the best way to proceed right now was.

“You… decide. The info, on your computer… anyway.”

I decided to wait and see. Since Sagan Station had pointed out that all loading work had to begin immediately and be completed within four hours, I assumed that the Type-7 would soon return to the mega ship from which it had started. Which, of course, was just a guess, albeit a not entirely far-fetched one.

I maintained the Gullveig’s position, ensuring that the asteroid remained between us and the suspected location of the research facility. The minutes dragged on, the monotony of waiting seemed endless. Just as the boredom was becoming unbearable, our patience paid off. A faint signal flickered on our sensors, indicating activity at the facility. It was the ship we had been waiting for.

“Something is happening... Another very sharp increase in emissions received. And there's the Azimuth Logistics ship again. Looks like it's slowly leaving the area... Damn, I wish we could get a view of that station to get an idea of how to proceed. Unfortunately, the first scan failed, it's a hell of a frequency mess...”

“Hm. Ok, so… can we, move in, yet?”

Maybe in a little bit, once that turtle of a transport was finally gone from the area… but I hadn’t a clue how we would approach that facility undetected with a ship. Its sensors would be more powerful and be able to detect a ship from further away even if its heat signature was low, and hiding the emissions by engaging silent running to close off the vents would only go so far. Because there were other ways to spot a ship approaching… notably, by just… actually seeing it, whether that was a camera or just somebody looking out a window at the wrong time.

At least I was ready to get started. Yet we were still stuck waiting here.
