Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Vasil Vasilescu Vasil began throttling back to let the planet’s gravity do most of the work of getting them through the atmosphere. “Hang on. It is probably going to be a rough descent.”

Maul grabbed one of the handles on the side of the SRV for stability.

"Ah, so it's not so much running but instead chasing something, huh? Is it the thrill ya get or some sort of nostalgia related thing? I've also had my fair share of chasing shit as well." His voice came across the comms a bit shaky and obscured by the rattling of the ship during it's descent.

"It's funny how no matter how long and hard the chase, the end result usually still leaves this weird void. Had an old pal named Khelan, I reckon you'd have liked him, been years since we've spoke but he once told me something similar and in the end he was right. In my particular case, I learned that revenge don't really hit like it does in the holo flix. It's really just a bunch of romanticized horseshit. No amount of time or justice can mend a wound that goes deeper than surface level. Acceptance on the other hand...I dunno...I'm workin' through that one out currently."

Things began to slowly stabilize and Maul went back to checking the second crate of weapons.

"Anyway, what do you reckon it was that beckoned you to the void in the first place, man? I feel like everyone has that one reason. You coming from the family that you did, and one that doesn't seem to be hurting for creds, I mean, it had to be something significant, right?"

Maul would never admit it but he was somewhat scared of what they may or may not find here. Be it a bag of bones or a creature that could swallow them all up in a single gulp. Being a bartender in his younger days formed this odd affinity towards hearing stories from explorers, much like the man who gifted him his first ship, Rusty. Exploration was the very thing that called Maul to the stars but his path lead him elsewhere. He had a certain respect for people like Vasil but not one that he voiced often. With the stress of the situation, it only made sense that he'd revert back to something he once took joy in; listening to an explorer talk.

“I’m the youngest of six,” Vasil explained, trying to hit the highlights and not get into the intricacies of Imperial noble family dynamics. “Not exactly a black sheep, but not top tier as far as family hierarchy. Aside from the oldest, we are all expected to make our own way in the galaxy. I made a fortune many times over through trading, realized I liked the travelling more and—DAMMIT What the hell!”

The angry growl of emergency retros roared to life as Vasil engaged full thrust to stop the Always Lost at 15 km above the surface, well above the three he’d been aiming for. His suit compressed, hugging tight as it compensated for the change in G-forces.

“The short answer to your question is that sights like this make me want to be out here, even with the occasional pucker moment of nearly plunging into whatever the hell that is.” Vasil fed the primary camera view to the SRV bay and to Willow. Below, the day-night demarcation, normally a fuzzy-gray line, shimmered like glitter thrown to the wind, though which twisted ribbons and snakes of pure silver. “First time I’ve ever seen something like this.”

Vasil checked the sensors. “Surface wind is higher than expected. Not a full dust storm, but enough to kick up the finer grit sand. Sensors can’t tell from here, but my guess is the sand is high in quartz or mica for the sunlight to reflect like that. Willow, you’re probably going to have more attenuation issues with the relay equipment than you thought.”

Vasil targeted the drop point. “The drop point is transitioning to the night side, so I’m not sure how much visual searching we can do. But we’ll head down and plant a beacon before the wind gets too bad. I'll slave the ship's sensors, so maybe you can get some readings and make any adjustments to the relay, Willow.”

“Mistress Willow.” corrected Jefferson.

Vasil sighed. “That’s not her call sign, Jefferson.”

"Right." said Maul, pulling his mind back on track and suppressing whatever worries he'd had for the time being. "I'll go and check the progress of those beacons and make sure one is prepped for first use."

Vasil Vasilescu“The drop point is transitioning to the night side, so I’m not sure how much visual searching we can do. But we’ll head down and plant a beacon before the wind gets too bad. I'll slave the ship's sensors, so maybe you can get some readings and make any adjustments to the relay, Willow.”

"Yeah, good call sending live data Vee. I can like, fine tune the signal to try and counter some of that interference."

Typing out the composition of the particulates in the air helped Willow sort out a type of wave that would give a better response than the choice she was going with. It was only a few percent improvement, but it was an improvement all the same. The quartz dust was the biggest obstacle to scanning. That was pretty much a prismatic mirror for a lot of light based sensors. There would be no full spectrum analysis here.

"Silica mica and starters of quartz huh? High oxygen atmos, bit of aluminum" mused Willow as she recalibrated the pulse emitters and receivers. "I guess that'll look real pretty if the starlight is coming from the right angle?"

Silica, oxygen and aluminum had stuck in her mind for some reason. Somewhere down the line, she had committed that to memory, but she couldn't for the life of her remember why. Watching the data was real dull now she had come up with new parameters for the computer to compensate for, so maybe it would be nice to see these silver lines Vasil had mentioned.

"Hey Vee, can you like.. " It hit her right there. Now she knew why she remembered the silica, oxygen, and aluminum tags. The thing that made that combination dangerous was heat.

"Pull up now Vee, DO NOT ENTER THE DUST" It was probably too late, she only hoped Vasil had come across this before. He was an experienced explorer after all.

Once, while Willow was still a kid, her brother Birch had crashed after flying through a volcanic dust cloud. The combination of hot dust high in silica and aluminum had formed an obsidian-like substance on the hull of his ship, and round its thrusters. Every atmospheric cooling intake was clogged, and the heat vents were full of molten glass. If Birch hadn't dumped a heat sink before that was encased too, and found a soft place to crash, he'd be dead. One thing was for sure, even if he had landed his Eagle, it wasn't getting off the ground without a host of new parts.

Entering this atmosphere in a great big ship like Longroad, coupled with high gravity would definitely super heat the hull making it the perfect place for obsidian to form like ice, turning the ship in to a glassy rock falling out of the sky.

"PULL UP VEE, PULL UP!"
02 Jan 2025, 6:22pm
Willows warnings and on-board claxon alarms started at 1000m above the ground. In the descent through the dust cloud, Vasil thought wind turbulence to be the source of the sluggish response from the maneuvering thrusters, and had increased power to them, but now that was only worsening the problem as they lost thrust the hotter they became.

Vasil pulled up, but the Always Lost continued losing altitude, heading towards a belly-flop at 100 meters per second. “Ten seconds to impact,” said Jefferson calmly.

Vasil's mind raced. A combination of dust and engine heat had to be the problem. Cutting engines and losing maneuverability was not an option. The heat sink launcher had malfunctioned, so that was not an option. The only option was to eliminate the dust build-up, and that would require more heat. It was a gamble, but it was the only option.

Vasil shifted all power to the main engines and locked open the boost injectors. At just over 350 meters per second, the peak overpressure from passing the speed of sound sent dust scattering along the shockwave and away from the ship. As forward thrust increased, Jefferson's crash countdown slowed but did not stop.

The Always Lost’s momentum carried it closer and closer to the surface. Jefferson stopped the countdown when the ship leveled out at 100 meters and rocketed over the dunes at nearly 500 meters per second, a deep sonic boom echoing across the sand. Vasil kept the boost at max output until out of the dust cloud and he could slow down to find a suitable landing place, 20km away from the drop point.

Although there was never any rain, there were dry thunderstorms, and thanks to the air pressure they were loud. This thunder clap made Creamy jump so much he almost lost his guitar over the edge.

"Wo, geh, ah. Qu'est-ce que c'est?"

He didn't have many reasons to talk now, so saying something coherent on the spur of the moment was hard, but even he didn't expect to use French. Slipping his goggles down, Creamy shuffled over to the cave mouth to see if there was any lightning this time. While checking out the sky for tell tail flashes, Custard pushed past him to hiss a warning.

Although Creamy couldn't hear Custard thanks to the grit laden wind assaulting his head, he could tell Custard was waring attackers to stay away. Thunder hadn't made Custard get all defensive before, so there was something unique with solo clap, but Creamy would have to wat till morning to investigate.

“Whoa! Love this crazy shit!” exclaimed Vasil over the open comm without a hint of irony. “Old explorers in old ships kicking ass!”

He started shutting down all non-essential system. With half of the dorsal heat vanes encrusted by glass, venting was not as fast as he’d hoped. Obsidian glass build up around the maneuvering thrusters further insulated the ship, preventing a proper heat dump.

He looked out the cockpit toward the approaching wall of dust and glanced to the damage reports being fed to the command console. “We’re okay, Willow. About 20 kliks southwest of the drop point. Maneuvering thrusters are reading functional but only at 10% capacity. Night and the sandstorm are only about an hour away so it looks like we’ll be riding out the storm and fixing the thrusters in the morning.”

"In the meantime, we’ll make ourselves useful and get a beacon planted.” Nearly smacking a planet at the speed of sound and then setting up beacons; all in a day’s work.
