It was his 16th birthday and he wanted to go celebrate with some friends when a group of regime supporters brutally attacked an activist of the Communist underground. Many passers-by watched in shock, but they did not dare to intervene. Kirby, however, climbed up a pole, tore down a regime banner and thus drew the attention of the bat on it. He ran with the flag in the baffled crowd and tried to shake off his pursuers, when people on the square suddenly moved closer together and blocked the way of the regime group. 'Enough is enough!', and later that day even 'Freedom for Azeban!', the crowd chanted, when more and more people from around joined; until the military arrived and started to beat down the protesters. This brutal event marked the beginning of a five-year civil war and a turning point in Kirby's life. His parents, pub-owners from the middle class of Azeban, had been imprisoned by the regime, and Kirby himself was forced to flee to his uncle in Abukunin.
Six months later he was able to join the militia of the rebels, who actually wouldn't recruit underage fighters, with forged papers. Without combat training and equipped with nothing more than the old Sidewinder of his father, Kirby nevertheless succeeded again and again to transform hopeless situations into small victories. After more than a dozen important operations, shortly before the liberation Azeban's, the only 20 year old Kirby was promoted to the rank of a captain, the third highest military rank in Eranin. Militia Admiral Green had his eye on him, and after the war he sent Kirby to the highly regarded University of Alioth, where he finished his due to the war adjourned Graduation, and where he completed two courses at the same time ('David against Goliath - Defense Strategies for Independent Systems' and 'New Technologies - What we can learn from the Thargoids').
Between 3291 and 3298 there's no information on Kirby's career, though in the meantime he probably resigned from active service under Admiral Green - time and reason are unclear. Last Kirby worked as a merchant of rare goods, primarily in the Lave cluster, and earned a remarkable fortune. This way he probably came into contact with Edmund Mahon. In 3301 Kirby was able to convince the Prime Minister of the Alliance of a trade agreement with the near the border to the Federation located region of Opala (including Eranin), and thus to preserve the independence of his home system. In the same year he joined The Allies [Aid], moved to LHS 2637, and today he works as a diplomat and strategist within the Alliance.
