Little is known of Jay Le Chardon prior to December 3301, although evidence seems to suggest that he is in fact the estranged son of a high ranking federal logistics officer, with whom he had a very tumultuous relationship. Following this suppostion, it is understood that he was expected to follow in his fathers foot steps, and had been put on a fast track cadet-ship within the federal navy, he, however, had other ideas. Upon graduating pilots federation academy, it would appear that he set off for imperial space, where he enlisted in the imperial navy, under the assumed name he uses now, as a privateer, and served with distinction as a combat pilot. By March 3301 his successes in the conflict zones had earned him around 28 million credits, most of which was tied up in his own, fully A-specced, matt black vulture, the "Atratus". The name being chosen as its latin meaning is "cloaked in black".

It was as commander of the "Atratus" that he was assigned to the shadowy "9th legion", Whilst with the 9th he built a formidable graphite grey imperial clipper, which he flew almost exclusively for his stay with that unit over the course of three years. Within the 9th he was promoted 5 times, ultimately ending up with a seat on their command council, but his career with the 9th was not without incident. He was court-martialed numerous times, for such things as orchestrating an attack on president hudsons personal farragut, "Starship One", senior officers intervened and stood the operation down before a major incident occurred. He also demonstrated a fiery temper which manifested itself in outlandish arguments, often with superiors. And while the 9th operated with a great degree of autonomy, the higher he got promoted, the more trouble he got into, until in the April of 3303 one final act of, highly covert, rebellion ended his career with the 9th.

Following some very highly classified operations, he is now seen by high ranking imperial officers as being loyal to the empire but not necessarily the emperor. Indeed from all reports, he appears to have a chip on his shoulder, evidently disdainful of most senators, dubious of the admiral, and contemptuous of the emperor. He piqued imperial military intelligence's interest in late 3304 when he founded his own private army of "Cavaliers", who operate completely independently, fighting for imperial interests beyond the borders of the empire.

This unit, "Cavaliers Le Chardon" has since shored up several imperial factions in and around the borders of the empire/federation, repelled a thargoid incursion from Kamadhenu, with Jay Le Chardon scoring over 595 confirmed thargoid scout kills, and enjoyed numerous classified victories in territory that they call "behind enemy lines", which we call the other side of the federal borders. While his dedication to imperial fundamentalism is admirable, his recent association with Hadrian Augustus Duval, and Nova Imperium is, alarming. However, no evidence, credible or otherwise, has been found to suggest that either Jay, or Hadrian, pose a threat to the emperor or any of the senate. IISS will, however, keep them, and their activities, under observation.
