It was 3288, and we were on our way back from a long excursion to the far side of the Milky Way, when the unthinkable happened: we were attacked. I don't remember much of what occurred, as I was still only eight years old. All I know is that something found us on the rim of inhabited space- something we weren't ready for. It seems that one of my parents was able to activate a long range distress beacon just before the fire spread to the command deck, and help arrived from the Alliance just in time to save me. I was staying down in our family's quarters, knocked out by the initial blast of whatever it was that hit us.
I still haven't been able to find the men and women who rescued me after I recovered, and I don't know what happened on that fateful day. I was adopted shortly after by a wealthy couple who lived near Cubeo. They weren't able to have children of their own, but they were the best family I could have asked for.
Growing up in the Empire was hard, especially when the Federation began encroaching on our borders. I never much liked the politics of war, but I did love one thing: flying. It wasn't long before I graduated from college and made my way back into neutral space, to the Alliance. It was there that I honed my skills as a pilot, fighting to free systems from the grasp of tyrants that posed as lackeys of their respective governments.
Then one day, all that changed. I was given a mission by one of Edmund Mahon's top administrators that didn't sit well with me. I was informed that a princess named Aisling Duval would be visiting a nearby system to raise awareness for her cause. My mission was to assassinate her. The incredible thing is, I was about to do it. I made my way through the crowd, and sidled close enough to her that I could have grabbed her hand if I had reached for it. I slowly drew my pistol from behind my back, when suddenly Aisling turned around. Her eyes met mine in a moment that seemed o last forever- indeed, it is still burned into my memory today. I immediately slid the pistol back into its holster and ran away.
Later on, I reached out to Aisling through covert channels and introduced myself. She remembered me- I don't know how- and asked if I would come and meet her in person. I guess I'll spare the details, but I've been loyal to her ever since that day. Turns out, she doesn't actually believe that slavery is wrong; it's just a political campaign point to help her polls. But she does care about her people, more than any leader I've ever met.
Nowadays, I smuggle slaves into the Federation and the Empire alike, and help free peoples defend themselves wherever I can. Aisling and I keep in touch, and whenever she needs a favor, I never disappoint. I'm not rich, but I do well enough for myself. Maybe someday I'll be able to really make some noise in the galaxy... someday soon perhaps.
