Lie Zhi-Wen grew up in the tourist system of He Qiong.  Like many people on Wilson Survey (the main Coriolis station in the system), his family made a living catering to the many tourists that visited the system.  Life was good and Zhi-Wen could have lived a comfortable life on Wilson Survey, but Zhi-Wen had a habit of making poor life decisions.  Early in his adult life, his debts grew to the point where he had no choice but to serve as an Imperial slave to repay them.

A wealthy baron in He Qiong purchased his service contract.  For the first few years his primary duty was to clean his master's small fleet of passenger ships. The baron noticed how well Zhi-Wen piloted the maintenance vehicles and made Zhi-Wen his private chauffeur.  Being a chauffeur was a lot more enjoyable and less strenuous than ship maintenance.  The other servants didn't like how the baron favoured him and mocked his name calling him lazy Wen which later evolved into Lazy Wonton.

Zhi-Wen's hard work and loyalty to the baron allowed him to pay of his debts in less than 10 years.  When he was free from his service, he joined the Pilots Federation and continued to fly spacecraft. Zhi-Wen transported anyone willing to hire him and flew with the moniker, Commander Lazy Wonton.  The name that was once meant to mock and demean him, grew into an important reminder of how others' opinion of him matter less than as his own opinion of himself.

Wonton built a fairly successful tour company and his life seemed to be trending in the right direction, but his bad decision-making skills caught up to him.  He and his company had always taken pride in providing excellent customer-focused service, but Wonton soon became known as a pilot who was able to accommodate passengers' needs and desires no matter how strange, safe or legal.  As his fines and bounties grew, the more dangerous and challenging each flight became.  Simple arrivals and departures from stations were now a complex procedure of misdirection and stealth.

Wonton's luck looked like it had run out during a tour which included a stop to see the ice geysers on Tujing 7 F.  Old acquaintances of his had tracked down his Dolphin passenger ship, the Aries.  He had dealings with the Tujing Jet Brothers years ago and haven't heard from them since.  Losing a small load of semi-attractive Xihe Biomorphic Companions was minor, right? All transgressions must have been forgiven and forgotten by now?

The two Viper MK3s interdicted him near Tujing 2. It only took a few seconds for them to bring the Aries' shields.  The normally safe and stable system of Tujing was unfortunately dangerous and chaotic at that time so no system security answered his frantic distress call. However, a wing of Imperial Couriers flying nearby did.  The 3 shiny Gutamaya ships had the markings of the Imperial Navy's 587th squadron, commonly known as Lavigny's Legion.  They graciously escorted the Aries to Thiele Gateway for repairs and it was there that Wonton learned more about the squadron and how it served as the Lavigny family's private guard.  The Legion needed qualified cargo pilots and Wonton needed a career change.
