Federation
During her time studying away from the Federation, Holloway grew to appreciate the ideals of the Alliance. Although she was torn between her love for Earth and the more liberal society in her new homeland, she never gave up her Federation citizenship. Excelling in her subjects, her degree is in Biology with dual minors in Astronomy and Geology. After graduating in 3293, her background in biology and geology got her an internship working towards a masters of science at a terraforming facility on 78 Ursae Majoris B 3. While the experience was good for her professionally, her new job made her homesick for both Garden City and her home on Earth. While beautiful, the rustic setting felt somehow hollow and artificial, and it contributed to her philosophical dislike of terraforming in general.
Once her internship ended in 3296, Holloway used the opportunity to move back to Earth and reconcile with her parents. She went to go work at a laboratory in Cologne, allowing for frequent visits to her hometown in North America. Feeling restless and missing her earlier years of intellectual exploration, Holloway looked for career openings through the Alliance. She applied to work on the small research vessel Agulhas. The job would give her experience working in space and studying stars and habitable worlds. The job was a perfect fit, and she started in 3297.
The Agulhas traveled throughout the bubble and even made excursions to systems outside colonized space. During stops and shore leave at stations throughout the major factions, Holloway saw the Empire firsthand for the first time in her life. Though she had seen Federal propaganda against their cold war enemy for years, she found the reality of their society more repugnant than she expected. It seemed to her that the imperials masked their sins in perfume and fine clothing. One day at a stop at an imperial station she saw a slave being grossly mistreated by their master. In the imperials she saw a people that draped themselves in decadence, and told fairy tales about how they were helping their indentured servants. The whole enterprise disgusted her, and she refused to ever do work for any imperial faction.
After 5 years working on the Agulhas, Holloway found a place that sated her Wanderlust. In late 3302, the vessel received a distress call, and the captain went to investigate. Upon arrival, the ship was attacked by pirates, and at the last second, Holloway was able to make it to the first officer's Sidewinder. She escaped and was able to evade the boarding ship's wingmates, but before she did, she witnessed the brutal slaughter of her friends and colleagues. She vowed that she could never do something so horrible to another person and promised she wouldn't ever stoop so low as to kill another sapient being.
Recovered by an isolated outpost, Holloway found her livelihood ruined. She worked for years couriering data and transporting goods before being able to afford a Cobra. In 3304, she saw on mission boards the call for pilots to bring goods into Ebor to start an initiative to communicate with the Thargoids. Finding this to be a noble goal, Holloway's participation in the community effort netted her a nest egg to purchase an Asp Explorer: the Hypatia-A.
In 3305, Holloway received word of the Distant Worlds 2 expedition, and applied. Over the course of the next year, she flew the Hypatia-A from Earth to the edge of the Abyss before returning back to the bubble. Her cartography and research awarded her the elite ranking in exploration from the pilot's federation and a massive wealth in capital.
Holloway invested this in her dream; her own long range deep space science vessel, a retrofitted Beluga Liner named Columbia. She currently works out of 101 Tauri for the Intergalactic Astronomical Union, and has dreams of leading her own ambitious expedition.
