Johann and his father lived together on a modest outpost. The kind of place to hide from the world, not raise a family. His father worked long schedules on a deep-run trader and while his time home was limited, he always brought back stories of adventure and intrigue.  The stories always had a measure of realness to them and when news arrived that something had destroyed his fathers' ship Johann was at once unconcerned and alarmed. So many stories had featured double-crossed mobsters and vigilante's on the run from the law that this seemed an eventual possibility.

Johann was surprised to learn that among the usual detritus of inheritance his father had provided the requisite documentation for a Pilot's License and a simple letter encouraging him to see the universe and make his own stories.
