In fact as she hit her teens she only became more interested, she would read about the various ships she'd see, research them. One of her favorite ships was the Anaconda, Faulcon Delacy's largest offering. It wasn't exactly the size that attracted her, but the fact the ship had been built to fulfill multiple purposes and that it could house a fighter bay. She'd spend a few hours a day on the weekends in the concourse of stations and settlements within the system. Watching various ships come and go, ships from many corners of human occupied space. Even ships like the Imperial Cutter and Federal Corvette had made appearances from time to time though these were rare, the more common sight was the Anacondas, Pythons, and Vipers that the system authorities used.
At the age of 16 Ember wanted to make a difference, tensions within her home had risen. Many of the local factions and governments were having squabbles where piracy and crime were concerned. Each blaming one another for shipments not arriving on time, or at all. Members resorting to crime and causing a ruckus, pirating traders and even commiting murders had start to put a fair bit of stress on the local authorities. Ember saw this as a chance to become a pilot, trouble was, she had no real experience with any sort of ship. Sure she had all that knowledge about the ships, however knowing the capabilities of the ship and handling them in flight was two very different things. Ember would need training to become a pilot. She opted to take a job running security for her home settlement "Shaver's Folly". At first she wasn't armed nor was she exactly sure how she'd stop someone, attacks directly within the settlement usually didn't happen on the ground, but in the skies over the settlement. These were also dealt with quickly by the settlements defenses as well as the Authority ships patrolling nearby.
One day however, a rouge pilot had landed in the settlement and to make matters worse they'd stolen an SRV from one of the hangers. They were speeding around, shooting the guns and carrying on making trouble... Armed guards were pursuing them and upon seeing this, Ember decided that rather than standing by and doing nothing, she'd try to slow them down ... trouble was she had no weapon and before she could act, the SRV exploded after multiple missiles struck it. One piece of it flew at her and became lodged in her helmet, following this she was of course given medical attention. She has a scar on her face to show for that day. Following this incident she underwent firearms training as well as how to maintain personal equipment. Over the next few months the weapons gradually got bigger and badder. She'd become particularly proficient with Rifles and pistols, though she struggled with shotguns and the Plasma powered Sniper. SMGs also gave her a fair bit of trouble in terms of managing the recoil. These only minorly improved over the remainder of her training.
At the age of 18 she moved up to being a crew gunner aboard one of the System Authority Pythons. She was one step closer to actually setting foot inside of her favorite ship, even if she didn't own it. Serving on one was a dream of hers alongside owning one. She didn't have much time to train on ship weaponry, but didn't seem to have much trouble adapting from the SRV guns to the hardpoints aboard the ship. It would be a few months however before she had to actually man the guns. The Python was on patrol near Van Houten Station when an Imperial Clipper slammed into one of the stations guns and damaged it causing a short circuit of the remaining guns. The pilot whipped the Python around and boosted in the direction of the clipper deploying the hardpoints as he went. Ember jumped on the guns and opened fire as soon as they were in range. Other System Authortiy ships also opened up, including several Vipers and Taipan fighters. The Clipper didn't last long under this firepower. Thankfully no-one else was injured.
At the age of 22 Ember underwent Pilot training using a Viper MKIII, she didn't initially complete this training having more than one accident. She'd never flown before of course. She'd ridden along on ships but had never actually been at the helm of one. Eventually she'd get the hang of it, and join up with other Security vessels patrolling the station, thankfully this was mostly her in the pilot seat and not really having to engage anyone head on. At least that's how it was starting out. After a few months there was once again a spike in criminal activity and Ember would have to learn her way around the Vipers weapons. The first few engagements were a bit sloppy, though she started improving slowly over time. The other Authority ships being backup were a great cushion which allowed her to fly without worrying about being outgunned.
At the age of 26 Ember's application to the Pilots Federation had been submitted, and she'd gotten to fly a Python with her own gunner. It'd be some time before the application could be looked over in it's entirety, there were hundreds of thousands of applications submitted at that time. One thing is for certain that by the time Ember's application was looked over she'd have plenty of flight experience and seat time. With the Python also came patrolling the system as a whole. Ember soon found her self responding to weapons fire reports and piracy reports as well. With the response area vastly opened up she became more involved. This also meant responding to calls for backup from her fellow officers. One such call lead to her engaging a Federal Corvette that appeared to be stolen. Up to this point she'd only seen the ship at a dock... Going up against it however she saw it's destructive capabilities. Ultimately the ship was disabled after a fairly long engagement. It was returned to the Federation after being repaired. Her own Python pretty battered from the encounter returned to the station after no shortage of malfunctions to the ships damaged systems and modules. Ember and the other officers were debriefed on the incident. When the Federation arrived to retrieve their stolen ship, she was permitted to meet with the crew alongside the fellow officers that assisted in disabling it. The Federal officers expressed gratitude, and appreciation for not outright destroying the vessel.
Not to long after this, the Imperial Navy made it's move on the Star system, using recent outbreaks of crime in the region as reason to bring the system under Imperial Rule. During this time there were no shortage of criminals seeking to take advantage of the wartime, and Ember was once again on the frontline. Pirate's, Murderers, and even Smugglers didn't escape her notice. The Empire outnumbered and overpowered the independent government within a matter of days. The Star system of Ember had not been well equipped to deal with the likes of a superpower invading and taking over by force. However an agreement was made between the Ember Defence Party and the Independent governments in the system. The independents would be allowed to keep some of the land based settlements, and the Empire would take Van Houten as well as the two smaller outposts within the system. This meant that the Empire would patrol the system in supercruise and that the Independents could better deploy their resources to the settlements that needed it, though they could also be called into action by the Empire if it was absolutely needed.
By the end of it all Ember was 28 and her Pilots Federation application had been accepted. Just in the nick of time too as the Empire had taken her home and her own government had to cut their Security forces as a result of a loss in finances both from the crushing defeat in the war, and the loss of the Stations and Outposts above. She'd still come visit, her new career as an independent pilot allowed such things. Though she'd go much further than any of her friends or family ever thought she would. She dreamed of an Independent home once again, and one day hopes to make that dream a reality once again. She holds no hatred towards the Empire for what happened, the politics of such things and the nature of the superpowers was something she had long been indifferent and ignorant of. Maybe now she could learn about the three powers, or even find a new home for her friends and family with a strong independent government.... Her new line of work opened up many possibilities, Ember only had to find them. Before she left her home for the final time, she was called to the command center of her old station. Her former senior officer had a surprise for her, the Python she had flown and served the local security forces with, had been retired from its Security role, and rather than send it off to be resold or scrapped, the ownership of the ship was transferred over to Ember. The ship would need a new name, and new purpose to go along with it. In time, Ember would find that purpose.
