Mike Metcalf was born in 3266 in the Vega system, and he joined the Federal Navy as a Wing Commander in 3287. He served alongside Duke Jameson, and in 3289 he took part in a mission to fight against the Empire- too close to the border with (redacted), leading to it being classified. During that mission, Jameson sacrificed himself to rescue other pilots that were in trouble, and only 10 out of 18 Federal ships returned to base, with Duke dying; ten pilots were killed in the squadron. After the conflict Metcalf became a Post Commander in the Federal Navy and volunteered to become a Top Gun instructor - teaching the best of the best pilots in the navy. One of his students was Pete Jameson, the son of Duke, and he persuaded him to stay in the Navy to live up to his father's example after Pete considered quitting due to the death of his friend Nick Martuuk.

Admiral Metcalf now is the Executive Officer in the Q Continuum Squadron - teaching new pilots how to survive in the black. He commands a Fortune Class fleet carrier named "Roadhouse" and has a fleet of more than 50 ships.
