Born to Carol and James T. Knight, Sarah's home was Rhea 3 in Federation space. At eleven years old her parents disappeared on an exploration mission out in the black void of space. She became obsessed with solving the mystery of their mysterious disappearance ever since.

Being given to the care of her Grandmother, Felicia Winters, Sarah spent the remaining years of her childhood with someone who was never there for her, being bullied at school and expected to get nothing less than straight A's. Most other people viewed Sarah as living the perfect life, but this couldn't be further from the truth. She had to work twice as hard as anyone else just to get anywhere and prove herself over and over again.

The only way out Sarah saw was becoming a pilot and getting her own ship, which she did as soon as she turned 18. It was not much, but Sarah immediately took a liking to her Sidewinder. At last she was free to do what she wanted with her life.
