Though Vasil had not been back home or spoken more than a few sentences to anyone in his family for over thirty years, he harbored no ill will toward anyone. It is a simple matter that he has not needed his family and they have not needed him until recently when his sister, Octavia, having become head of the family summoned him back to Cemiess to aid in the war effort. Vasil returned without question, driven by the deep sense of duty and honor engrained in him by being raised in the Imperial tradition. His family still maintains the wealth and status prized by Imperial citizens, most notably several thousand square kilometers in an alpine valley on the planet Emerald. There, his father was a client in the Imperial patronage system, spending most of his time making deals with whichever patron he chose to support, while his mother planned and hosted lavish parties for the social elite. Neither had much time for their six children, who were raised by nannies, tutors, and slaves.
According to family tradition, Vasil, being the youngest of six children, received only a small gift from his parents when he turned 21, with the expectation that he would create his own wealth. This gift was further reduced due to Octavia's influence over their father and her desire to maintain wealth and status at any cost. He used the money to buy an old Type 7 transport, soon discovering a talent for trade and quickly exploiting market prices to turn fast profits on everything from rare minerals to Imperial slaves.
Vasil's wealth grew as the years passed, as did the love of interstellar travel. He'd become enamored with the isolation of long-distance trade routes, finding that it wasn't the profits he enjoyed, but the solitude and freedom that came from being out in the void. Eventually, there came a time when he commissioned an asp explorer, named it Always Lost, and went into the unexplored void just to se what he could find.
Thirty years later, both he and the ship are a bit frayed at the edges and require more maintenance than they used to, but Vasil is still at his most content when he's lost somewhere out in the vast expanse of space.
