I had an aptitude for science, so started out to pursue a career in academia, studying the long-extinct volcanoes like the one I lived on.
However, after a few years in academia, the wanderlust bug bit me, so I started out with my first Sidewinder, to carry on my science and follow my curiosity outside the shackles of academic life.
(My great-grandmother had also been a pilot with a strong science bent, but after a short career as an independent pilot, had settled for the life as a university researcher - this was what made me determined to follow that dream of fiercely independent exploration).
It took a while, but I ran some missions to make money, did some trading, and worked on some community goals, to finally make enough of a profit to get my Asp Explorer, the Tavona. It was this ship I took to Sagittarius A, and it is still my favourite ship (I now own several ships). The trip put was long, and undertaken just after Colonia was being settled, before the string of stations along the route was built. It was my first long exploration trip, and still stands as one of my greatest achievements. On the return, I found the new stations that had been built along the route took the stress of worrying that I might lose all that exploration data out of the trip, although in some ways that made it more of a mundane trip, and less romantic.
Since then, the Galaxy has felt smaller and smaller; I've continued to do some trading, tho I mostly explore, sometimes undertaking passenger missions to give me the extra credits and give me a point to aim for. It was while doing this I made it to Elite Exploration, and got my pass to visit Founder's World, and Jameson Memorial - my first Elite rank.
I also worked for the Empire for a while, to rank up to get my clipper - a beautiful ship, although I've spent more time in my Python and Krait Mk II recently. I visited the Thargoid bases, found those to be scary and strange; I also worked on getting information from the Guardian Ruins for Prof. Palin, which eventually led to me acquiring a Guardian FSD booster blueprints, and Guardian fighters.
I did try to take on the Thargoids, bought a Crusader and equipped it with a few anti-Xeno weapons, but never got good enough to take down more than the odd Scout. The ship is still out at the Pleiades tho, so I may go back and try to hone my anti-Xeno combat skills if the Thargoids continue their advance.
I've usually maintained a strong independence, and tried to stay out of Galactic politics, with the great powers and the smaller factions - I don't pay much attention to these things in general. However, recently I joined an Expedition organised by a group called The Fatherhood - took me right out to Point Decision, furthest I've been from the core of the Galaxy. It was an eye opener to explore in a loose group, and meet other commanders on the way - since then I've decided to join their squadron - it seems that I can do that and still maintain my preferred way of life, which is to meander around the Galaxy doing what I feel like - a few missions, a bit of combat here and there to remove pirates, passenger missions. One thing I do really like is the upgrade to the discovery scanners, and the new planetary probes - it seems we have been missing so much of the richness of strange life that inhabits the Galaxy before - it's been wonderful to see all these new and strange biological entities, and speculate about them. It seems that the Galaxy is becoming ever more fascinating for an amateur science/explorer like me.
