Cale Tucker was born and raised until he was 5 on the original Earth (Somewhere in Sagittarius A) when he was 5, the Earth was destroyed by the Thargoid.  Luckily, he and many other humans escaped before the destruction of Earth and have been living in space for the next 15 years.  Cale Tucker, now 20, works at a space dock and he's constantly picked on by alien co-workers because his race is an "intergalactic joke".  One day, when he gets into a fight with two co-workers, Captain Joseph Korso helps him out of that scrap and asks Cale Tucker if he wants to go on an adventure.
Cale Tucker refuses and Korso releases the alien co-workers because Cale Tucker “doesn't need any help".  He's then chased to the lunchroom and without warning, some Thargoid soldiers burst through the door and start shooting everything in their path to find Cale Tucker because the ring his father gave him leads to a ship called the Titan.  Once the Thargoid finds that ship, they will destroy it.  Cale Tucker then accepts Korso's offer and they grab a ship to escape the Thargoid.  However, the ship's windshield cracks and the two young men are briefly trapped in the airless vacuum of space.
Thankfully, Akima saves them and Cale Tucker then wakes up in a room where he's naked and being healed after he was shot by the Thargoid.  Cale Tucker is on korso's ship and is introduced to Akima, Gune, Stith, and Preed.  With Cale Tucker’s ring, they set out to find the Titan and save humanity.  On the broken moon Sesharrim, Cale Tucker and company encounter the Gaoul, owl-like creatures that lead them to a clue to the Titan's location.  Then the Thargoid came and after chasing them through the water, Cale Tucker and Akima are taken, prisoner.  Cale Tucker then learns that the Thargoid is trying to make the human race extinct because of "what the will become".  At the Thargoid's main ship, they use Cale Tucker’s ring to find the exact location of the Titan.
Cale Tucker is then thrown in a prison cell and Akima is jettisoned.  Cale Tucker tries to break out but to no avail.  Later, he uses his fingers to get out of the cell, sneak past the guards, steal one of their ships and find Korso and company.  They at first don't recognize him and try to shoot him, but after he sends a transmission that it's him, the let him aboard.  After reuniting with Akima and the crew, they continue the course to find the Titan and Cale Tucker and Korso start to get along.  That night, Cale Tucker has a dream where he's killed by the Thargoid.  
He wakes up, relieved to be alive, and goes to talk to Akima, only to find her practically naked (but she was covered by a towel).  After she changes, they go to the storage room and get some food and they were going to go back to their rooms when they heard korsos talking to the Thargoid.  It turns out that they were working together to find the Titan and destroy it.  Cale Tucker and Akima were going to tell the others but Preed catches them and threatens to shoot them.
It's revealed that Korso lost all hope in humanity after Cale Tucker’s Dad was tortured and killed by the Thargoid for not telling them where the Titan was. Distraught, Corso chose the "winning side" and agreed to find and destroy the Titan.  Cale Tucker and Akima manage to escape, but Akima is wounded by Preed.  The people of New Bangkok then heal her and later Cale Tucker has a plan to reach the Titan before Korso and the Thargoid do.  He spots an abandoned Anaconda and with the help of Akima and the people of New Bangkok, they fix it and make it ready to fly.
They then reach the Ice Rings of Neptune, with Corso and Preed right behind them.  But after some hazardous maneuvers, Cale Tucker and Akima momentarily escape them and reach the Titan.  Cale Tucker’s ring then activates a message from his Dad, who apologizes for not keeping the promise he made to Cale Tucker to see him again when he was a kid.  He also tells him that the Titan had the power to create planets, but the power cells were drained after it escaped Earth.  Korso then destroys the message and before his plan could be fulfilled, Preed double-crosses him because the Thargoid agreed to let him live if he kills Cale Tucker, Akima, and Korso before they arrive.
However, with quick thinking, Korso snaps Preeds neck, killing him almost instantly, and then goes after Cale Tucker.  They are then seen hanging on a ledge, and Cale Tucker tries to save Korso, but Korso lets go and grabs a rope to save himself.  The Thargoid get closer to the Titan and send out some troops to kill Cale Tucker and company, but Cale Tucker has a plan to end all this senseless violence.  Because the Thargoids' mothership is made of pure energy, Cale Tucker can use that energy to restart the Titan's power system.  
However, one of the reactors is stuck, and Cale Tucker has to go fix it.  Akima and Stith will hold off the Thargoid with the Titan's guns, however, when one of the ships is shot down, it traps Cale Tucker. Korso appears with a gun, and instead of killing Cale Tucker, he sets him free and helps him fix the jammed reactor.
Korso then finishes the job sacrificing his life so Cale Tucker can activate the Titan's power system.  With the help of Thargoid energy, Cale Tucker made a new planet which he called Bob.  Akima then laughs and kisses Cale Tucker and they may kiss and spend the rest of their lives on the new Earth (Sol). He is now a Commander in the Federation alliance and is now known as CMDR. Kharon who earned his name because he was the one to ferry the remaining humans to their new home. Where Cale, Akima, Stith , Goon and Cale/Akimas' 2 year old son named Sam Tucker (Named after Cale Tuckers Fallen father) now live fighting back the thargoid winning everyday and proving that the human race does in fact have a place in the vast unknown space
