On his 18th birthday, he took what few credits he had scraped together and booked passage on a transport to Sol, excited to enlist in the Federal Navy, and hoping to become a fighter pilot. Instead, he was turned away without so much as a second glance, the recruiting officer telling him that despite what he may have seen on GalNet, the Navy wants recruits with more formal education, not poor ore-haulers. Shattered and credit-less, after a few weeks of searching, he was finally able to secure passage back home in exchange for working as an engineer's assistant on a grungy garbage vessel.
When he arrived back at Fomalhaut, the galaxy had another tragedy in store for him. He found his family's ore-hauler adrift, his parent's dead, their cargo hold ripped open....the work of pirates.
Tegryn was furious. Not only did the Federation cast him aside, they had allowed pirates to gain a foothold in a system a mere 25 light-years from Sol. He vowed to get as far away from his home system of Fomalhaut as he could. He signed up to work as crew on a long-range transport vessel and never looked back. He hopped from crew to crew, taking any position he could on any transport that would hire him. He eventually began to make a name for himself as a promising escort pilot. No matter what star he visited or station he stepped foot on, he saw the same thing over and over. Smaller backwater systems were forgotten by the Federation, and overrun with piracy.
Finally, a chance opportunity fell in his lap. While in the cramped cockpit of his rickety Condor stub fighter, defending the transport he was working for from yet another pirate attack, he saw the leader of the local pirate crew was among the attackers. After what seemed like hours, but was probably only minutes, of exhausting dogfighting, Tegryn was able to line up a laser shot to the engines of the pirate's ship and send it spiraling out of control, exploding in a brilliant cloud of fire and shrapnel. When his transport arrived at the next port, he took the gun-camera footage to the Local Authority Office, and was able to claim the bounty on Quinn Duststone, a pirate that had been plaguing the system for months.
With this new windfall, Tegryn finally has just enough credits to afford a lease on a Sidewinder and a membership to the Pilot's Federation. Now it's time to find the bastards who killed his family….
